To become an administrator on a V Rising server, add your 17-digit SteamID64 to the server’s adminlist.txt, enable the in-game console, join that server, open the console with ~, and run adminauth. A successful response grants Administrator (SuperAdmin) privileges. Names and the older STEAM_0:1:... identifier format do not work.

The complete process at a glance
You need access to the server files or its hosting-panel file manager. The process has four separate parts: identify the correct Steam account, place its SteamID64 in the server’s administrator list, turn on the client console, and authenticate after connecting. Missing any one of those steps can make adminauth appear not to work.

- Find your 17-digit SteamID64 from your Steam profile URL. If your profile uses a custom URL, use a SteamID lookup service such as steamid.io to resolve it. Do not copy a display name or a
STEAM_0:1:...ID. - Open the server’s
adminlist.txtand add the SteamID64 on its own line. - Save the file, then restart the server if your host requires it. Restarting after the edit is the safest default when the panel’s instructions are unclear.
- In the game, go to Main Menu > Options > General and enable Console Enabled. The wording can vary between builds.
- Join the same server, press
~, typeadminauth, and press Enter.
The success message is the confirmation that the account has Administrator (SuperAdmin) access. Editing the file alone does not complete the in-game authentication step.
What you need before editing
- Control of the server configuration: On a self-hosted server, this means access to the machine’s files. On a rented server, you need the provider’s file manager or an equivalent configuration area.
- The correct Steam account: The account that will play as administrator must be the account whose SteamID64 is listed.
- A connection to the target server: Authenticate only after joining the server where the ID was added. Adding an ID to one installation does not grant rights on another.
- Console access in the game client: The console must be enabled before you press
~and run the command.
Solo and private games normally do not require this server-list step; adminlist.txt is intended for server administration. If you are playing a local or private session, the server-admin workflow may not apply.

Find your SteamID64
Use the ID in your Steam profile URL
SteamID64 is a 17-digit number. When Steam displays the numeric form of your profile URL, copy that entire number. Check that it has 17 digits before putting it in the file.
When your profile has a custom URL
A custom profile address contains a name rather than the numeric identifier. Resolve that address with a SteamID lookup service, then use the returned SteamID64. Verify the result belongs to the account you will use to join the server.
Formats that must not be used
adminlist.txt does not use a player name, a Steam display name, or the legacy STEAM_0:1:... format. Enter only the 17-digit SteamID64. Do not surround it with quotation marks and do not add labels such as admin=.

Locate adminlist.txt
The exact path depends on how the server was installed. The file is called adminlist.txt and is inside a Settings directory. The following locations cover the paths reported for common installations, but menu names and paths can change with a server build or hosting provider.

These paths are not interchangeable. Editing a second copy of adminlist.txt while the server reads another directory has no effect. If more than one candidate exists, identify the directory used by the running installation or ask the hosting provider which file is active.
Add the account to adminlist.txt
Self-hosted server
- Stop the server if you normally stop it before changing configuration files. This avoids editing while the process is writing its settings.
- Open the active
Settingsdirectory and locateadminlist.txt. Create the file there only if the installation does not already provide it. - Enter your 17-digit SteamID64 on one line. For several administrators, put one SteamID64 on each separate line.
- Leave out names, commas, quotes, comments, and the legacy SteamID format.
- Save the file in the same directory, start the server, and wait until it is available before connecting.
Hosted server
- Open the provider’s file manager or configuration editor.
- Navigate to the active
save-data/Settings/directory, or use the provider’s documented configuration section if it exposes administrator entries there. - Edit
adminlist.txtand place each SteamID64 on its own line. - Save the change. Follow the panel’s restart control or instructions; if no behavior is documented, restart the server before testing.
Some guides report that the list can be picked up without a restart, while others instruct you to stop and start the server. Because those behaviors vary by build and host, a restart after saving is the cautious choice. Do not assume that a file-manager save has already reloaded the running process.

Enable the in-game console
- Launch V Rising.
- From the main menu, open Options.
- Open the General section.
- Tick Console Enabled. The exact label or placement can differ by game version.
- Apply the setting and return to the main menu.
This is a client-side setting. Adding your SteamID64 to the server does not automatically enable the console in your game client.
Authenticate after joining
- Join the server whose
adminlist.txtyou edited. Confirm that it is the correct address or listing if you operate multiple worlds. - Press the tilde key,
~, to open the console. Keyboard layouts can place this key differently; use the key that produces the console on your layout. - Type
adminauthexactly as shown, with no quotation marks. - Press Enter and read the response.
A success message indicates Administrator (SuperAdmin) privileges. If the command is rejected, do not keep repeating it blindly: check the file, account ID, console setting, and server instance in the troubleshooting section below.
Self-hosted and hosted servers: the practical differences

The permission mechanism is the same in both cases: the server checks the SteamID64 list, and the connected player then runs adminauth. The difference is only how you reach and reload the file.

Troubleshoot “adminauth” not working
The command does nothing or is not recognized
- Return to Options > General and confirm that Console Enabled is ticked.
- Join the server before pressing
~; running the command at the main menu is not the server-authentication step. - Type
adminauthwithout extra spaces or punctuation.
You receive a denial after the command
The most common cause is an incorrect identifier. Recheck that the file contains the SteamID64 for the account currently connected, not a display name, a custom profile name, or a STEAM_0:1:... value. The number should be on its own line with no quotes or comments.
The ID is correct but the server still does not grant access
- Confirm that you edited the file used by this running installation. Compare the active persistent-data path with the location you changed.
- Make sure the file was actually saved by the editor or hosting panel.
- Restart the server, then reconnect and run
adminauthagain. - Check that you joined the same server instance you restarted. Multiple installations can have separate
Settingsdirectories.
A hosted panel keeps reverting the file
Use the panel’s own save action and restart control rather than editing a local copy. If the provider offers both a text file and a settings form, determine which one writes the active administrator list and use that single method.
Considering debug flags
A community report describes adminauth failing even when the ID was listed and mentions checking debug flags in ServerHostSettings.json. That is anecdotal, not an official fix, so treat it as a last diagnostic lead after verifying the ID, path, save operation, restart, and console setting. Do not change unrelated server flags without a backup and a clear reason.

Manage and revoke administrator access
Add more administrators
Add each trusted player’s SteamID64 on a separate line in the same active adminlist.txt. Every player must use the account corresponding to the line you added and run adminauth after joining.
Remove an administrator
Delete that player’s SteamID64 line, save the file, and restart the server as the safe default. Removing the line prevents a future authentication from that account; restart and reconnect before assuming the change has been loaded.
Protect the file
- Give file-manager or server-machine access only to people who should be able to grant SuperAdmin privileges.
- Review the list when staff or moderators leave.
- Keep a backup before changing other server settings, especially when investigating an authentication problem.
Anyone whose SteamID64 remains in the active list may be able to authenticate as an administrator, so treat the file as an access-control list rather than a roster or display-name list.
Common mistakes checklist
- Using a Steam display name instead of a numeric SteamID64.
- Using the old
STEAM_0:1:...format. - Putting multiple IDs on one line.
- Adding quotes, labels, commas, or comments to a line.
- Editing a similarly named file in the wrong installation directory.
- Saving a hosted-panel edit without using the panel’s save action.
- Forgetting to restart when the host or build requires a reload.
- Leaving Console Enabled unticked.
- Running
adminauthbefore joining the server. - Testing on a different server than the one whose file you changed.
Version and path caveats
Menu labels, file locations, and restart behavior are version-dependent. The consistently important parts are the identifier type and sequence: a 17-digit SteamID64 in the active adminlist.txt, console enabled in the client, connection to that server, and adminauth entered through the console. If a current build or hosting panel presents a different path, prefer the location used by that running installation and the provider’s documented restart procedure.
