To become a Soulmask server administrator, set an admin password, restart the server, join it, press ~ to open the console, run gm key [admin password], and then confirm administrator access in the GM panel. The password used for players to join the server is separate from this admin password.

What you need before starting
You need control of the Soulmask server’s startup settings or its hosting control panel, plus a character that can join the server. The procedure applies to the two common setups:

These instructions come from Soulmask community and hosting guides rather than official developer documentation. Console behavior, command names and panel labels can change with game updates, so verify the result in your current server build.
Choose the correct way to set the password

Both methods provide the same credential to the in-game gm key command. The difference is only who controls the server’s launch configuration. A hosted panel may leave the field blank initially; a blank field will not give you a usable admin credential.

Set an admin password on a self-hosted server
1. Add the launch parameter
Edit the command or launcher entry that starts the Soulmask dedicated server and append an admin-password parameter in this form:
-adminpsw="your password"
Replace your password with the value you intend to enter later. Keep the quotation marks when the password contains spaces or punctuation. Do not confuse this with a player join password: the admin password is specifically used to authenticate GM commands.

Stop the running server, wait for the process to exit, and start it again with the modified launch options. Changing a command line while the server is already running does not retroactively set the credential. If your launcher stores arguments in a profile, save that profile before restarting.
3. Protect the value
Anyone who knows the admin password can attempt to open the GM panel and use administrative commands. Do not post it in public chat, screenshots, Discord channels or a shared startup script. If you suspect that it has been exposed, replace it in the launch options and restart the server before using administrative commands again.
Set an admin password through a managed host panel
1. Open the server’s startup or settings page
Sign in to the panel that controls your Soulmask server and look for a Startup page, an Admin Password field, or a configuration file entry labelled Soulmask Server Settings. The exact menu name differs between providers.
2. Enter and save a non-blank value
Type the password into the admin field and save the configuration. Some panels ship with this field empty, which means you must supply a value yourself. The filename ServerSetting.ini is sometimes mentioned in questions about Soulmask administration, but the community material establishing this procedure does not confirm that filename. Use the file or field your panel actually exposes instead of renaming a file based on an unverified example.

3. Restart from the panel
Use the panel’s stop/start or restart control after saving. Wait until the server reports that it is online before joining. A restart is required for the server process to read the new admin password.
Keep the two server passwords separate
Soulmask can use one password to control who may join and another to authorize GM functions:

Using the join password with gm key will fail unless you deliberately made both values identical. Using the admin password as a public join password also exposes a credential that should remain restricted to administrators.
Join the server and open the console
1. Join after the restart
Connect with the character that should receive administrator access. If the server is password-protected, enter its player password at the join prompt, not the admin password unless you intentionally configured them to match.

2. Press the tilde key
Once you are in the world, press the tilde key (~), normally the key immediately to the left of the number 1. This should open the console input line.
3. Try the alternate key if necessary
Keyboard layouts can change which physical key produces a tilde. A community report from a German-layout setup found that switching Windows to QWERTY made the key left of 1 open the console. Community guides also report that the numpad minus key can open it. These are input-layout workarounds, not separate administrator commands.

- Check that the game window has focus.
- Try the physical key left of
1while using a QWERTY layout. - Try the numpad minus key.
- If neither works, test the keyboard layout before changing server settings.
Run gm key and confirm administrator access
1. Enter the GM key command
With the console open, type the command exactly as shown, replacing the bracketed text with the admin password you configured:
gm key [admin password]
For example, if the configured value is RiverGate42, enter gm key RiverGate42. Do not type the square brackets; they indicate a replacement value.
2. Complete the confirmation inside the panel
The command may open the GM panel, but opening the panel by itself is not proof that your character is an administrator. Enter the admin password again in the panel’s password or confirmation control and confirm it. Only then should the administrative controls be available.
3. Test with a low-risk action
Before using destructive commands, verify that the panel accepts the credential and that a harmless control responds. If the panel appears but actions remain unavailable, close it, reopen the console and repeat the password confirmation carefully.
Does administrator access persist after reconnecting?
Community instructions disagree about persistence. One guide reports that administrator status is not retained between sessions and that gm key must be run again each time you log in. Another says the rights remain after the panel is closed. Because these observations may depend on the game build, server configuration or the meaning of “session,” test your own server:

- Reopen the console and check whether the panel still accepts administrative actions.
- Log out and reconnect, then repeat the check.
- If access disappears, run
gm key [admin password]after each login.
Do not assume that a successful first authentication permanently grants every future connection. Treat the observed behavior on your current build as authoritative.

Commands available through the GM panel
The following commands are documented by Soulmask community guides. Their capitalization matters, and several use Pinyin keywords rather than English words. Type them exactly as shown.

The available command set is not guaranteed to be identical across patches. If a command is rejected, first check capitalization and spacing, then confirm that your server build still supports it.
Ban and unban players with the permission list
Community documentation describes bans through the server permission list and a player’s SteamID:

Replace <SteamID> with the player’s actual SteamID. Keep the angle brackets out of the command. Record the ID and the reason for each moderation action so that an unban can be reversed accurately. The retrieved community instructions do not document a reliable kick-command syntax; do not guess one or substitute a ban command when you only intend to disconnect a player.
Troubleshoot common failures
The console does not appear
- Make sure you are in the server world rather than a menu or loading screen.
- Press the key left of
1with a QWERTY layout, or try numpad minus. - Check that the game window is focused and that another overlay is not capturing the key.
gm key is rejected
- Confirm that the value is the admin password, not the player join password.
- Check for accidental spaces, missing quotation marks in the startup argument, or a capitalization mismatch.
- Verify that the server was restarted after the password was saved.
- On a hosted server, return to the control panel and make sure the Admin Password field is not blank.
The GM panel opens but provides no administrator controls
Opening the panel is only the first stage. Enter the admin password in the panel’s confirmation field and accept it. If controls remain unavailable, close the panel, rerun gm key, and check that you are connected to the server whose configuration you edited.
The password works once but not after reconnecting
This is consistent with the documented persistence conflict. Reauthenticate after each login unless your own test confirms that rights survive reconnecting. If even a fresh login fails, restart the server and repeat the password-setting procedure.

A command is reported as unknown
Check exact case and spelling first. Soulmask’s documented commands include Pinyin terms such as FuHuo and BaoCun, so translating them or changing their capitalization can make a valid command fail. If the exact syntax still fails, the command may have changed in your current patch.

A teleport or NPC command has an unwanted result
GM commands can alter the shared world for every player. Stop and verify the target coordinates, affected character and intended scope before retrying. Make a manual save with gm BaoCun only when you want to preserve the current state; do not use broad commands as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Older admin-panel instructions and why they may differ
A 2024 Steam community discussion describes a separate in-game admin panel that required console execution to be enabled. That procedure may reflect an older build or a particular client setup rather than the current server-password flow. If an old guide tells you to enable a different panel or to edit an option that your current server does not expose, prefer the active -adminpsw or Admin Password setting and the gm key authentication sequence.
The community material does not establish an official, version-stable command reference from the developer. Treat third-party command lists as version-sensitive and test administrative actions on a backup or non-production world when possible.
Administrator checklist
- Choose a private admin password distinct from the player join password.
- Set it with
-adminpsw="your password"or the host panel’s Admin Password field. - Save the configuration and restart the server completely.
- Join the correct server and open the console with
~, QWERTY’s key left of1, or numpad minus. - Run
gm key [admin password]without the square brackets. - Confirm the password inside the GM panel.
- Test persistence after closing the panel and after reconnecting.
- Use exact capitalization for every GM command.
- Keep SteamIDs and moderation decisions recorded when changing the permission list.
- Change the admin password and restart the server if it is disclosed.
What to do when your setup does not match these instructions
Panel labels, launchers, keyboard behavior and command availability can vary by host and game version. Compare the settings your server actually exposes with the two established password paths rather than assuming a particular configuration filename. If the server accepts neither the launch parameter nor the panel field, confirm that you are editing the dedicated-server instance that players are joining, then check the host’s current Soulmask startup documentation for a version-specific label.
