The SteamID method is account-specific and survives restarts; the password method is quicker but gives administrator access to anyone who learns the password.
Stop the server before editing its files and perform a complete restart afterward. The exact Admin.ini location differs between current third-party guides and may vary by installed build or host, so verify the path in your server’s file manager before changing anything.

Which method should you use?
Choose the method that matches how tightly you need to control access. A private server with several trusted administrators is usually better served by named Steam accounts. A temporary test server may be faster to configure with a launch password, provided you protect that password and understand that it is not tied to one player.

These routes are separate. Adding a player to Admin.ini does not require an administrator password, while setting -AdminPassword does not automatically create a named SteamID entry.

Before changing anything
Get control of the server process
You need access to the machine or hosting panel that starts the Abiotic Factor dedicated server. Managed hosts generally expose a file manager, configuration-files area, or launch-argument field. If you administer the server yourself, use the same account and service definition that normally starts it.
- Tell connected players that maintenance is about to begin.
- Stop the server cleanly from the host panel or service manager. Do not edit a live configuration file while the process may still be writing it.
- Make a backup copy of the existing administrator file, if one exists, before changing its contents.
- Decide whether you are configuring named Steam accounts or a password-based login.
Do not assume there is a universal Server.ini containing every setting. The guides reviewed describe launch parameters for items such as the server name, join password, ports, and slots; world gameplay rules in a per-world SandboxSettings.ini; and administrator identities in Admin.ini. They do not document one all-purpose server configuration file.

1. Find the player’s SteamID64
The file expects a numeric SteamID64 that is exactly 17 digits long. Ask each prospective administrator to provide the ID for the Steam account they will use to join the server, then verify the value with a SteamID converter such as steamid.io. A profile name, display name, or shorter Steam identifier is not a substitute for the 17-digit value.
Check the digits carefully before saving. A valid-looking number belonging to another account will grant access to the wrong person, while a truncated or differently formatted identifier will not match the intended player.
2. Locate Admin.ini on your build
Current third-party instructions disagree about the directory. Supercraft and several other guides place the file at:

AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Admin.iniNodecraft instead describes:
AbioticFactor/Saved/Config/WindowsServerAnother guide describes the server save directory or a custom location selected with -AdminIniPath=. These are not interchangeable guesses. Use the installed build’s file manager or the host’s configuration-files page to search for Admin.ini, and check whether the launch configuration defines a custom path. If the panel hides the game’s directories, ask the host which path its current Abiotic Factor image uses rather than creating a second file in an arbitrary folder.
3. Edit the Moderators section
Open the existing file with the server stopped. Under the section header [Moderators], add one line for each administrator:

Moderator=76561198000000001Replace the example numbers with the actual 17-digit SteamID64 values. Keep one account per line and preserve the section header exactly. If the file already contains other settings, change only the moderator entries unless your host’s documentation says otherwise.
Do not use a bare SteamID= line. Supercraft specifically warns that older guides showing that format are not recognized by the current setup described in its guide. The expected key is Moderator, followed by an equals sign and the numeric ID.
4. Save and perform a full restart
- Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Start the server again from the normal panel or service definition.
- Wait until the server is fully online rather than reconnecting during its startup phase.
- Have the listed player join with the same Steam account used to obtain the ID.
- Open the pause menu and check whether the Admin tab is visible.
Supercraft states that a full server restart is required before the Admin tab appears. Stopping and starting only a client, refreshing a host-panel page, or reconnecting without restarting the server will not reload the file.

Method 2: use the -AdminPassword launch parameter
1. Set an administrator password in the launch configuration
Open the host panel’s launch-arguments field, or the service definition used to start the dedicated server, and add the parameter named -AdminPassword with the administrator password value. Panels differ in how they represent arguments: some provide a separate name-and-value form, while others accept the complete argument in one text field. Follow the panel’s syntax for that field instead of pasting a second, differently formatted version.
Use a password that is different from the ordinary player join password. The administrator credential should be long, unique to this server, and shared only with people who genuinely need administrative access.
2. Restart the server with the parameter present
- Stop the server before changing its launch arguments.
- Save the updated launch configuration.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join the server with the player account that should receive administrative access.
- Use the in-game administrator login control and enter the password configured for
-AdminPassword.
This method grants access by knowledge of the password, not by checking a particular SteamID. Anyone who obtains the password can attempt to authenticate as an administrator, so remove it from public notes, screenshots, stream overlays, and shared configuration files.
3. Treat the launch flag as part of every restart
The password method depends on the launch flag being present when the server starts. If a host panel replaces launch arguments during an update, or if you start the service through a different script, the administrator password may no longer be active. Check the effective launch configuration after migrations, image changes, or manual service edits.

Where the administrator tools appear in-game
The sources describe administration as an in-game graphical interface rather than a built-in text command console. Supercraft gives the route as Esc → Player Management → Admin. RespawnHost describes an Esc → Admin route. The exact label can differ by build or interface context, but an authenticated administrator should find an Admin area from the pause or player-management screens.

Kick and ban controls
RespawnHost states that kick and ban actions are available through the in-game admin menu. Use those controls only after confirming that you selected the intended player; a display name can be ambiguous when several accounts use similar names.
What vanilla administration does not establish
Supercraft says that god mode, noclip, spawning, and teleportation are not built into the vanilla game’s administrator feature. It describes a real command console for those kinds of operations as coming from a community UE4SS mod rather than from the stock server.

That list conflicts with the descriptions that say vanilla Abiotic Factor has no such console. Do not treat those commands as guaranteed stock functionality. Confirm the installed game version, the server build, and any mod requirements before promising players that a command will work.
Troubleshooting an account that is not recognized
The Admin tab does not appear
- Confirm that the server, not just the client, was stopped and restarted after the edit.
- Check that the player joined with the Steam account represented by the 17-digit ID.
- Reopen the file and verify the section is spelled
[Moderators]and each key is spelledModerator. - Make sure the ID contains 17 digits and no quotation marks, spaces, or extra punctuation.
- Verify that you edited the file loaded by this server instance, not a similarly named file in another world or installation.
- Check whether the launch configuration sets a custom
-AdminIniPath=.
The file cannot be found
Search both directory patterns reported by current guides: the Saved/SaveGames/Server location and the Saved/Config/WindowsServer location. If neither exists, inspect the host panel’s configuration-files section while the server is stopped. Do not create duplicate Admin.ini files in both places; the server may read only one, leaving you unable to tell which edit took effect.
The password login fails
- Confirm that
-AdminPasswordis attached to the actual start command used by the running server. - Check for a panel field that silently replaces or strips launch arguments.
- Restart after changing the value; changing a saved panel field does not necessarily alter an already running process.
- Ensure you are using the administrator password, not the ordinary join password.
- Enter the password exactly as configured, including capitalization and punctuation.
If the password has been shared widely, replace it in the launch configuration and notify every legitimate administrator of the new value.

A supposed admin command does nothing
First determine whether the action belongs to the graphical Admin menu or to a community mod. The stock game’s documented administration path is the GUI. A command list copied from a mod guide may require UE4SS or another server-side modification and should not be assumed to work on an unmodified server.
Security and access management
Prefer named accounts for a stable team
Admin.ini limits authorization to the Steam accounts you list. When an administrator leaves the team, remove that account’s Moderator= line, save the file while the server is stopped, and restart so the change is loaded. Keeping the list short reduces the number of accounts that can affect other players.
Protect password-based access
The -AdminPassword route is convenient for a small, temporary server, but it has no account-level distinction: possession of the password is possession of the privilege. Keep it separate from the player join password, do not publish it in community channels, and rotate it if an unauthorized person may have seen it.
Keep a recovery copy
Before each edit, retain a copy of the last known-good file or launch configuration. If the server stops recognizing administrators after a change, restoring the previous version gives you a clear recovery point while you investigate the path, syntax, or account ID.
How administrator configuration relates to other server settings
Do not move gameplay settings into Admin.ini. The guides describe a division of responsibility: launch parameters for connection and capacity settings, SandboxSettings.ini for per-world gameplay rules, and Admin.ini for the moderator list. The exact files available can depend on the server build and hosting arrangement, so use the files generated by your installation as the authority for that instance.
An administrator who can kick or ban players is not automatically entitled to edit the host’s launch arguments or filesystem. Those are separate operating or hosting permissions. Give panel and machine access only to people who need it, even when several players have in-game administrator status.
A verification checklist
- The server was stopped before its administrator configuration was edited.
- The selected route is clear: named SteamID64 entries or a launch password.
- Every SteamID64 is numeric and exactly 17 digits.
- The file is the one loaded by the current server build.
- The
[Moderators]header andModerator=keys are spelled correctly. - No obsolete bare
SteamID=entries are being relied on. - The server completed a full restart after the change.
- The intended player joined with the matching Steam account.
- The administrator can locate the Admin area from the pause or player-management interface.
- Password-based access uses a secret that differs from the ordinary join password.
- Any command that is not present in the GUI has been checked for mod and version requirements.
Version and documentation caveats
The available setup instructions are third-party guides rather than confirmed documentation from Deep Silver, Fishlabs, or Steam. They disagree on the Admin.ini directory, and they disagree about whether command-style actions such as teleport or summoning are available without a mod. Abiotic Factor patches and hosting images can change file locations or interface labels. Verify the path, launch arguments, and Admin menu against the build actually running your server before making access promises to players.
For most persistent communities, the practical sequence is straightforward: identify each administrator’s SteamID64, stop the server, add Moderator= lines under [Moderators] in the file used by that build, restart fully, and check the Admin interface. Use -AdminPassword when a shared credential is acceptable and you can protect it as carefully as any other administrator secret.
