The setting that controls server difficulty
Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated servers use the z_difficulty console variable for the server difficulty. The accepted values are:

Use lowercase in the file for consistency. Capitalized forms, such as Impossible, appear in sample configurations, but the setting is normally written in lowercase. Do not add punctuation, a colon, or a second value.

Change the difficulty in server.cfg
This is the persistent method for a dedicated server. The file is loaded as part of the server configuration, so the value can be applied again when the server starts.
1. Stop or shut down the server safely
Before editing, stop the dedicated server or use its normal shutdown procedure. Editing while the process is writing configuration data can leave you unsure which version was loaded. If you cannot stop it immediately, make the edit, then perform a full restart before testing.

Open the cfg folder inside the server’s left4dead2 directory. Common installation paths are:
- Windows:
C:srcdsleft4dead2cfg - Linux SteamCMD installation:
/home/steam/l4d2/left4dead2/cfg/
Your installation may use a different parent directory. The important part is the order: the server root, then left4dead2, then cfg.
3. Create server.cfg if it does not exist
A fresh installation does not necessarily contain server.cfg. Create a plain-text file named exactly server.cfg in the cfg folder. On Windows, make sure file extensions are visible while saving; otherwise a text editor can create server.cfg.txt, which the game will not load as the intended configuration file.
4. Add the difficulty line
Put this line in the file:
z_difficulty impossibleReplace impossible with easy, normal, or hard when that is the desired setting. Keep one setting per line if you add other server options. A simple file could therefore contain only the difficulty line.

5. Save as plain text
Save the file without rich-text formatting. The filename must be server.cfg, and the line must begin with the variable name. Avoid smart quotes, bullets, or comments copied from a formatted document.
6. Restart and test
Start the dedicated server again after saving. The restart is part of the change: the server must load the edited configuration before players join. Start a session, confirm that the server behaves as expected, and keep the file in place for subsequent restarts.
Complete examples for each difficulty
Use the matching line below in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg.

Do not put several competing z_difficulty lines in the same file. If more than one line sets the variable, it becomes difficult to tell which value was loaded last. Remove the old line and leave one deliberate value.
What the menu labels mean
Hosting guides sometimes describe hard as “Advanced” and impossible as “Expert.” Those labels are not established here as universal current in-game wording, so treat the variable values as authoritative when editing the file. If you explain the setting to players, quote the label shown by the particular game build or menu they are using rather than assuming that every interface uses the same name.
Why a server can return to Normal
Administrators have reported dedicated servers that start with a chosen difficulty and later revert to Normal, or reset when a round begins. The reports are old and do not establish a confirmed current bug. They are useful as troubleshooting clues, not as proof that every server will reset.

Check that the persistent file is the one you edited
Recheck the complete path and filename. A line in a different installation, a misspelled directory, or a file saved as server.cfg.txt will not change the running server. Confirm that the file is under the active left4dead2/cfg/ directory, not a similarly named game or test directory.
Confirm the server was restarted after the edit
Changing the text while the process is running does not by itself prove that the current process has loaded it. Shut down the server, start it again, and then create a new session for the test. If the setting appears correct only after a restart, the restart was the missing step.

One forum answer recommends putting the setting in server.cfg rather than autoexec.cfg. The reason given is that server.cfg runs on every map load, while autoexec.cfg runs only when the server starts. This is a forum recommendation rather than a confirmed behavior statement for every current installation, but it provides a practical diagnostic: keep the intended value in server.cfg and inspect other configuration files for a later line that sets z_difficulty normal.
Check whether a player vote is changing it
A mid-map difficulty vote can replace the value you set at startup. If the difficulty changes after a vote or at a map transition, the startup line may be working and a later game action may be overriding it. Vote-management plugins are sometimes suggested for restricting difficulty votes; one forum suggestion named Vote Manager2. Its current behavior and compatibility are not verified here, so test any plugin on a non-production server before relying on it.
Consider SourceMod syntax only when SourceMod is actually installed

z_difficulty impossibleThe available discussion does not establish that the sm_cvar form is required, nor does it provide a tested result for current builds. Do not add the prefix merely because a forum example contains it. Use the plain line first on an unmodified server; investigate the SourceMod form only if your installed server’s configuration conventions require it.
A reliable troubleshooting sequence
Follow these checks in order so that each result narrows the cause.
- Read the active path. Identify the directory from which the dedicated server is launched, then open its matching
left4dead2/cfg/folder. - Verify the filename. Ensure the file is exactly
server.cfg, not a second extension or a similarly named backup. - Reduce the file to one value. Leave a single line such as
z_difficulty hardwhile testing. Remove duplicate difficulty lines temporarily. - Save as plain text. Reopen the file in a basic text editor and confirm that the line is still present exactly as written.
- Perform a complete restart. Stop the dedicated server, start it again, and wait until it is ready before connecting.
- Test a fresh session. Do not judge the change solely from a round that was already in progress before the restart.
- Observe when the reset occurs. If it is correct at startup but changes after a map load, round start, player departure, or vote, record that trigger.
- Inspect other automation. Check
autoexec.cfg, launch-time configuration, administration plugins, and vote-management tools for commands that may set the variable again. - Test without optional plugins. If the reset disappears when SourceMod or another plugin is disabled, re-enable components one at a time to identify the override.
Server.cfg versus autoexec.cfg
These files are not interchangeable in the troubleshooting reports. The forum guidance says autoexec.cfg runs at server start, whereas server.cfg runs on every map load. That distinction matters when a value is correct immediately after launch but returns to Normal later.
For the specific goal of keeping the selected difficulty in the server’s normal configuration, place the line in server.cfg:
z_difficulty hardUsing server.cfg does not guarantee that a plugin, vote, or another command cannot overwrite the value. It does give you a persistent location that is loaded during map changes according to the cited forum explanation.
Editing on Windows
Use the correct directory
For the example installation, browse to C:srcdsleft4dead2cfg. If the server is installed elsewhere, search from the dedicated-server root rather than editing the configuration folder of a client installation.

Create or edit the file
- Open the
cfgfolder. - Open
server.cfgin a plain-text editor, or create it if it is absent. - Enter one line, such as
z_difficulty normal. - Save with the exact name
server.cfg. - Restart the dedicated server before testing.
Showing file extensions in Explorer is especially useful here because it exposes accidental names such as server.cfg.txt.
Editing on Linux with a SteamCMD installation
Use the server’s cfg directory
For the example Linux layout, the file is /home/steam/l4d2/left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. Substitute the actual account and installation directory used by your service.

A typical editor workflow is:
cd /home/steam/l4d2/left4dead2/cfg
nano server.cfgAdd the desired line, for example:
z_difficulty impossibleSave the file, exit the editor, and restart the dedicated server through the same service or launch method you normally use. The command above only opens the file; it does not restart the server.
Check permissions if the change does not stick
If the file cannot be saved or is immediately replaced, verify that the account running the server can read the file and that the account you used to edit it wrote to the same installation. A correctly formatted line in a directory the active process does not use has no effect.
Choosing a value for a shared server
The variable offers four discrete choices, so the operational decision is straightforward: pick the value that matches the experience you want and place only that value in the persistent configuration.
- Use
easywhen the server is intended to minimize challenge. - Use
normalwhen you want the standard setting or need a neutral baseline while diagnosing resets. - Use
hardwhen the group expects a more demanding game. - Use
impossiblewhen the group specifically wants the highest value accepted byz_difficulty.
Because votes and plugins may alter the setting after startup, tell administrators when a vote restriction or configuration audit is part of the server’s intended rules. The line in server.cfg establishes the configured value; it does not by itself document every later mechanism that can change it.
Limits of what this setting proves
The documented procedure establishes how to write the server variable and when to reload it. It does not establish every detail of current engine behavior, such as whether z_difficulty requires sv_cheats on every current build. No reliable evidence here confirms that requirement, so do not add an sv_cheats command solely to make the difficulty line work.
Likewise, an old report of a reset is not enough to label the behavior a confirmed game bug. Treat the timing of the reset as evidence about your own server’s configuration: startup, map load, round start, player departure, or vote. That observation determines which file, plugin, or rule to inspect next.
