To become an administrator on an ARK: Survival Ascended dedicated server, set an admin password in GameUserSettings.ini, restart the server, join it, and run EnableCheats <AdminPassword> from the in-game console. You must authenticate again after each new connection.

ASA server administration is password-based. The server reads a value named ServerAdminPassword from the server configuration. After you authenticate with that value, the game allows administrative or cheat commands for the current session.
This is not a permanent role attached to your survivor or Steam account. Reconnecting, restarting the game, or joining again later normally requires another EnableCheats command. Treat the password as a server credential: anyone who knows it may be able to run powerful commands.

Admin password versus join password

Changing the join password does not grant admin rights, and changing the admin password does not by itself prevent ordinary players from connecting.
Before you edit anything
- Have file access to the dedicated server, or permission to edit its configuration through the hosting control panel.
- Know which installation is actually running the ASA server. A machine can contain more than one server instance, and editing an unused copy will have no effect.
- Schedule a short maintenance window. The server must be restarted after the value is changed.
- Keep a copy of the original configuration file so you can restore it if a formatting mistake prevents startup.
- Choose a long, unique password that is not used for the join password, your operating-system account, or another service.
Guides most often describe the following location for a Windows dedicated server: ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/GameUserSettings.ini. The exact root folder depends on how your server was installed, so use the copy belonging to the running instance.

Set the admin password in GameUserSettings.ini
- Stop or prepare to stop the server. Editing while the process is writing configuration can cause your change to be overwritten. A clean shutdown is safest.
- Open the configuration file. Navigate to
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/on a Windows server and openGameUserSettings.iniin a plain-text editor. - Find the
[ServerSettings]section. The setting belongs under this section, not in a different configuration file. - Add or replace the line. Use this form, replacing the example value with your own password:
[ServerSettings] ServerAdminPassword=Use-A-Unique-Password-Here - Save as plain text. Preserve the
.iniextension and the existing section structure. Do not add quotation marks around the password unless your host’s editor specifically requires them. - Restart the dedicated server. A player reconnecting to an old process will still be using the old configuration. Wait until the server has fully stopped and started again before testing.
Some community posts and hosting panels show a startup-parameter form such as ?ServerAdminPassword=.... That is a secondary, community-described method rather than the most consistently documented approach. Use it only when your particular panel or launch process explicitly supports it; the INI entry is the commonly described baseline.
Authenticate in the game
- Launch ASA and connect to the dedicated server after the restart has completed.
- Open the in-game console. Community guides identify Tab as the console key on PC. If your control layout or platform exposes the console differently, use the control shown by your current build.
- Enter the command with the exact password configured on the server:
EnableCheats Your-Admin-Password - Submit the command. Guides commonly report no error message when the password is accepted, so verify access with a low-impact administrative command rather than assuming success from the absence of text.
- Run the authentication command again whenever you start a new session or reconnect. Authentication is described as session-based rather than persistent.
Do not include the angle brackets shown in documentation. They indicate a replacement value: type the password itself after EnableCheats.

Running administrative commands
Published ASA guides disagree about the command prefix. Some show a command after cheat; others show admincheat. Because the current build’s accepted syntax can vary, do not assume that one prefix is universally correct.

Start with the least disruptive command available to you. Avoid testing destructive, map-altering, or player-affecting commands on a live world until you understand the syntax and consequences.

Check that you edited the live instance
Multiple server installations, test copies, and control-panel profiles can make the file path look correct while the game is reading a different file. Compare the instance name, map, ports, and startup profile shown by your host or launch script with the folder you edited. If the server is managed by a panel, use its configuration editor or file manager for that specific instance rather than a similarly named local folder.

Check timing
Changing the file does not retroactively authenticate players. The sequence is configuration edit, full server restart, connection, and console authentication. If any step is skipped, repeat the sequence in that order.
Security and day-to-day administration
Protect the credential
- Use a password that is long and unique to this server.
- Do not post it in public chat, screenshots, issue reports, or shared configuration repositories.
- Give it only to people who need administrative access; the join password is not a safe substitute.
- Change the value and restart the server if an untrusted person learns it.
- Check host-panel logs and command history before sharing screenshots, because configuration values can be visible in plain text.
Use a controlled test
After authentication, test with a reversible or observational command. A command that changes player state, creature ownership, inventory, weather, or the map can affect everyone online and may be difficult to undo. Tell connected players before using commands that alter the world, and save the world when your operating procedure calls for it.

Write down the server instance name, configuration location, restart method, console key for your platform, and the approved command syntax for your current ASA build. Store the actual password separately from that procedure. This reduces accidental edits and makes it easier for another trusted operator to recover access without publishing the credential.
Platform and version limits
The most specific file path and console-key instructions available for this procedure describe a Windows dedicated server and PC console access. A hosted Linux instance, a game-server panel, or a console client may expose different paths or controls. Do not assume that the Windows path or the Tab key applies unchanged to every platform.
ASA receives patches, and community guides do not all agree on command prefixes or persistence behavior. Recheck the server’s current build and host documentation after an update, especially if EnableCheats stops working, the console key changes, or previously accepted prefixes are rejected. No current official Studio Wildcard page was confirmed for these exact steps, so treat third-party instructions as widely used guidance rather than a formal guarantee.
