On PC, open the in-game console and enter tgm for God Mode or tim for Immortal Mode. The community-maintained Skyrim command reference says these commands work in the PC version; it does not establish a built-in equivalent for console editions.
Which command should you use?
| Command | Effect | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
tgm |
The reference describes God Mode as giving infinite health, magicka, and stamina. | You want the closest option to invulnerability and do not want ordinary resource limits. |
tim |
The reference describes Immortal Mode as allowing damage while preventing health from reaching zero. | You want to remain protected from death while still seeing damage occur. The reference reports a possible visual distortion bug if an enemy performs a kill animation on the Dragonborn. |
Both are toggles: enter the same command again to turn the mode off, according to the command reference. These are console cheats, not quest rewards or normal character progression.
How to enter an immortality command on PC
- While playing the PC version, open the in-game console.
- Type
tgmfor God Mode ortimfor Immortal Mode, then press Enter. - Enter the same command again when you want to disable the effect.
The command descriptions come from a community-maintained reference, not an official current command manual, so they should not be taken as independently confirmed behavior for every current PC release.
Does setessential make the player immortal?
No. setessential <BaseID> <#> changes whether an NPC can die: the reference specifies 0 for mortal and 1 for immortal. It is not the player-character command. Skyrim also has narrative-protected NPCs who cannot be killed by the player, but that mechanic does not protect the Dragonborn; see the game overview.

Can a vampire or werewolf become immortal?
Vampirism and lycanthropy provide supernatural abilities, but the available descriptions do not establish either transformation as protection from combat death. Calling a vampire “immortal” may fit lore or role-play, but it should not be confused with gameplay immunity. Dawnguard’s vampire and werewolf abilities do not change that distinction.
Survival Mode can still be lethal
Bethesda’s September 27, 2017 article about Survival Mode describes added survival pressure, not a way to become unkillable. Hunger reduces available stamina, fatigue reduces available magicka and potion effectiveness, and cold reduces available health; at the highest cold level, health reaches zero and the character dies from exposure. Transformed vampires and werewolves become cold more slowly and can feed to restore hunger, but the article does not say they are immune to death. Read Bethesda’s Survival Mode description.

What about PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch?
The cited command reference limits console commands to the PC version. It does not establish a built-in tgm or tim method for PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch editions, so do not assume the PC instructions apply there.
