Use the control that matches the problem: Block channel for a channel you do not want recommended across Twitch, Not Interested for a single recommendation shelf, Content Display Preferences for whole classes of labeled content, and Mute when you only need silence. Blocking a person stops chat and whisper interactions but does not stop that person from viewing your streams.
Which Twitch control should you use?
Twitch has several controls that sound similar but operate at different scopes. Choosing the wrong one can leave the unwanted channel in discovery, or can restrict a user more broadly than you intended.

| Control | What it changes | Scope | Can the content still be viewed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block channel | Removes a channel from recommendations across Twitch. | That channel’s discovery surfaces. | Yes. You can still visit the channel directly. |
| Not Interested | Removes an item, streamer, category or section from the shelf where you selected it and provides recommendation feedback. | One shelf or collection. | Yes. It is not a viewing ban. |
| Content Display Preferences | Hides or blurs selected Content Classification Labels (CCLs). | A type of labeled content in recommendations, browsing and search. | Usually yes if you follow the channel or open its channel page directly. |
| Block user | Stops the person’s messages from appearing to you and prevents whispers, follows and subscriptions between you. | The person’s interactions with your account across Twitch. | Yes. Blocking alone does not prevent them from watching your livestream. |
| Mute | Silences the player or browser tab. | Audio only. | Yes. Live video continues to play. |
| Channel ban | Stops a person from chatting in a channel; the channel can enable an additional setting to prevent banned viewers from watching. | One broadcaster’s channel. | Not necessarily. Viewing is blocked only when the channel’s viewing restriction is enabled. |
Twitch’s definitions and outcomes are documented in About Bans, Blocking, and Suspensions and How to Customize Content You See on Twitch. Menus can differ between desktop, mobile and account versions, so look for the named option even when its exact location changes.
A useful way to think about the choices is to separate discovery, content type, interaction and sound. Block channel and Not Interested tune what Twitch recommends. Content Display Preferences filter labeled themes. Block user changes what a particular account can do around your account. Mute changes only what you hear. None of these controls is a universal replacement for the others.

Stop one channel from appearing in recommendations
When the same broadcaster keeps appearing in your Home page, navigation recommendations or other discovery areas, use the channel’s Block channel option rather than muting the stream or merely unfollowing it. Twitch says channel blocking removes that channel from recommendations across Twitch. Depending on the surface, that can include the homepage carousel, navigation recommendations, the Following page and other recommendation areas.
How to block a channel
- Open the unwanted channel or locate one of its recommendation cards.
- Open the available More or three-dot menu. On some screens the option is presented from the channel’s card; on others, open the channel page first.
- Select Block channel and confirm if Twitch asks you to.
This is a discovery and interaction preference, not a universal content ban. Blocking does not delete the channel, remove its videos from Twitch, or stop you from opening its URL. If you deliberately visit the channel, you can still watch it. Use this control when your goal is “do not recommend this channel,” not “make this channel impossible for me to access.”
Blocking a channel is different from blocking the broadcaster’s personal account through chat. The channel control is aimed at recommendation surfaces; the user control also suppresses messages and direct interactions. If both problems apply, you can use both controls.
If the channel still appears
- Check that you blocked the channel rather than selecting Not Interested on a single card.
- Refresh the page or reopen the app; recommendation changes may not be visible until the shelf is rebuilt.
- Remember that a direct link, a followed channel, or a result you intentionally open is different from a recommendation.
- If the problem is a type of content rather than one broadcaster, use Content Display Preferences instead.
Remove one recommendation shelf item with “Not Interested”
Not Interested is the narrowest option. Twitch describes it as feedback for the shelf or collection where the item appeared. It removes the channel, category or section from that particular shelf and can improve recommendations on a later visit to the homepage. It does not block the channel across Twitch and does not prevent you from watching the content.
Use Not Interested
- Find the recommendation on the Home page or another shelf that offers item controls.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Select Not Interested.
The choice may be available for a streamer, category or an entire section, depending on the shelf. Twitch says feedback can be undone immediately or managed in settings. If you changed your mind, use the undo prompt shown after the action when available, or open the relevant recommendation settings and remove the feedback there.
Choose this option when the recommendation itself is the problem—for example, one category occupying a carousel you otherwise find useful. Choose Block channel when you want that broadcaster removed from recommendations more broadly. Not Interested is feedback, not a promise that the item can never be found through search, a direct visit or another surface.
Hide or blur whole types of content
For mature or otherwise unwanted themes, Twitch provides Content Display Preferences. These settings use Twitch’s Content Classification Labels (CCLs), rather than targeting an individual streamer.
Recommended Free Tools
Change Content Display Preferences
- Open your profile menu.
- Go to Settings and then the Content Preferences area, where Twitch lists Content Display Preferences.
- For each available Content Classification Label, choose whether to hide or blur it.
- Save or apply the changes if the screen provides a confirmation button.
When a label is hidden, Twitch says matching content is excluded from recommendations, category browsing and search. The setting is not an absolute viewing lock: a channel you follow remains an exception, and opening a channel page directly can still expose labeled content. Local legal or age requirements can also control which settings are available in some regions.

Hide versus blur
- Hide removes labeled content from the discovery surfaces covered by the setting.
- Blur leaves the item present but obscures the relevant preview so you can decide whether to open it.
Twitch’s guidance states that thumbnails carrying the Sexual Themes label are blurred by default for all users. That default does not mean every labeled stream is hidden; review the individual CCL controls if you want less of that content in recommendations and search.
Why labeled content can still appear
Content preferences filter recommendations, category browsing and search, not every possible route to a stream. A followed channel is exempt, and a direct visit to its channel page can reveal the stream. If you need to avoid a particular broadcaster through all discovery surfaces, block the channel as well.
These settings are best for a recurring theme rather than a single creator. Hiding a label can affect many channels at once, while blocking one channel leaves unrelated channels with the same label available. Conversely, blocking several channels does not replace a label preference if the concern is the subject matter itself.

If the unwanted contact is an individual user rather than a stream recommendation, use Twitch’s user-blocking control. Twitch says blocking prevents the person’s messages from appearing in chats, stops whispers, and blocks follows and subscriptions between the two accounts. The blocked person is not notified.
Block from a username card
- Open the person’s username card in chat or another Twitch surface that exposes their profile actions.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Select Block and confirm.
The exact card layout varies by device. If you cannot find the option in chat, open the user’s profile card or use whisper settings.
Block or unblock with a chat command
In a channel chat, Twitch documents these commands in its Chat Commands reference:
/block usernameblocks the account named in the command./unblock usernameremoves your block on that account.
Replace username with the account’s exact Twitch name. Commands may be unavailable in some contexts; use the username-card or whisper-settings menu when that happens.

A user block is not a channel ban and is not a viewing ban. Twitch’s current blocking guidance states: “Blocking someone prevents chat and whisper interactions, but it does not prevent them from viewing your streams.” A blocked user can therefore still watch your livestream unless you take a separate channel-level action.

Blocking also should not be described as a site-wide suspension. It changes your relationship with one account; it does not ask Twitch to remove that person from the service or from other channels.
Stop someone from viewing your own livestream
If you are the broadcaster or a moderator and need to keep a person out of your channel, use a channel ban, not only a personal block. Twitch defines a ban as a channel-specific moderation action that stops the person from chatting in that channel.
Chat restriction versus viewing restriction
A standard ban can leave the viewer able to watch silently. Twitch identifies an additional channel setting that prevents banned users from viewing livestreams; enable that setting if your moderation goal is to keep the banned account out of the broadcast itself. Because this is a channel control, it applies to that channel rather than to Twitch as a whole.
Do not confuse either action with a suspension. A suspension is Twitch-wide enforcement applied by the platform. It is not a viewer preference you can turn on for one account, and it is not interchangeable with blocking or banning.
This distinction matters when troubleshooting: if a blocked person is still watching, that behavior is consistent with a personal block. If a banned person is still watching, check whether the channel’s separate viewing restriction is enabled rather than assuming the ban failed.
Mute a stream without unfollowing or hiding it
Use mute when the video is useful but you do not want to hear it—for example, while monitoring several streams or keeping a stream open in another tab. Muting changes audio only. It does not remove the channel from recommendations, hide its thumbnail or block chat and whispers.
Mute the player
- Move the pointer over the video player to reveal its controls.
- Select the speaker icon or the player’s Mute control.
- Use the same control to restore sound, or adjust the volume slider if you want partial audio.
Mute the browser tab
If the player control is hard to find, use your browser’s tab menu and choose its mute-tab command. This silences that tab while leaving the Twitch video running. The label and location differ by browser.

Twitch’s Understanding Viewer Count vs. Viewer List guidance says a live video still counts as a view when the player or browser tab is muted, provided the live video continues playing.

If you need both silence and fewer recommendations, mute first for the immediate audio problem and then apply Block channel or Not Interested separately. A mute control has no effect on what appears in Home, Following or search.
A practical decision guide
Match the symptom to the smallest control that solves it:
- One broadcaster keeps returning in discovery: block the channel.
- One card or category is cluttering a particular shelf: choose Not Interested.
- You want fewer streams carrying a particular mature-content label: adjust Content Display Preferences to hide or blur that CCL.
- A user is bothering you in chat or whispers: block the user from the username card, whisper settings or with
/block username. - You only need silence: mute the player or browser tab.
- You run the channel and need a viewer out: ban the account; enable the setting that prevents banned users from viewing if viewing access must also end.
These controls can be combined. For example, block a repeatedly recommended channel, hide a broad CCL, and mute a stream you still want to monitor. Each action addresses a different part of Twitch’s discovery, content-filtering, audio or moderation system.
Common mistakes and fixes
Muting and expecting recommendations to change
Mute affects only sound. Use Block channel or Not Interested for discovery, and Content Display Preferences for labeled content.
Using Not Interested as a permanent channel block
Not Interested applies to the shelf or collection where you used it. For broader recommendation removal, open the channel’s options and choose Block channel.
Assuming a user block hides your stream
Blocking stops direct interactions but does not stop the blocked account from viewing your livestream. If you own or moderate the channel, use a channel ban and the separate viewing restriction when appropriate.
Expecting hidden labels to override follows
Hidden CCL content can still be visible from a followed channel or a direct channel visit. Unfollow the channel, avoid direct visits, or block the channel if the goal is to remove that broadcaster from discovery.
Looking for an identical menu on every device
Twitch’s interface changes by platform, account and region. Start from the documented menu name—three-dot options, username card, whisper settings, profile settings and Content Preferences—rather than relying on a fixed pixel-by-pixel path.

Calling every restriction a ban
A recommendation block, a personal user block, a channel ban and a Twitch suspension have different owners and scopes. Use the term that matches the action so you know whether you changed discovery, interaction, one channel’s moderation or platform-wide enforcement.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop seeing one Twitch channel?
Use the channel’s three-dot or More menu and choose Block channel. Twitch says this removes the channel from recommendations across Twitch, including relevant Home, navigation and Following recommendation surfaces. It is not a viewing ban: you can still open the channel directly or watch it from a direct link.
What is the difference between Block channel and Not Interested?
Block channel is the broader recommendation control for one broadcaster. Not Interested removes a streamer, category or section from the shelf where you selected it and provides feedback for later recommendations. Not Interested does not block the channel across Twitch, and neither option prevents a deliberate direct visit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I hide a whole type of Twitch content?
Yes. Open profile settings, go to Content Preferences and find Content Display Preferences. Twitch lets you hide or blur available Content Classification Labels. Hidden labels are excluded from recommendations, category browsing and search, although followed channels and direct channel visits can still expose the content.
Does blocking a Twitch user stop them from watching my stream?
No. Twitch’s current blocking guidance says blocking prevents chat and whisper interactions but does not prevent the blocked person from viewing your streams. If you own or moderate the channel and need to restrict viewing, use a channel ban and enable the separate setting that prevents banned users from watching.
Can I mute Twitch without unfollowing?
Yes. Use the speaker control in the video player, or mute the browser tab. The stream continues playing and remains visible, so muting does not change recommendations or interaction permissions. Twitch says a live stream can still count as a view while its player or tab is muted if live video continues playing.
How do I block someone from Twitch chat?
Open the person’s username card, select its three-dot menu and choose Block. Twitch also documents /block username in chat and /unblock username to reverse it. If the command or card is unavailable on your device, look in the user’s profile card or whisper settings.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why can a hidden content label still appear?
Content Display Preferences filter recommendations, category browsing and search, not every route to a stream. Twitch treats a channel you follow as an exception, and visiting a channel page directly can reveal its labeled content. To avoid one broadcaster more broadly, block that channel too.
What happens when I block a Twitch user?
The person’s messages no longer appear to you in chats, they cannot whisper you, and Twitch says follows and subscriptions between the accounts are blocked. The user is not notified. This is a personal interaction control, not a channel ban or a Twitch-wide suspension.
Does a channel ban always stop someone watching?
No. Twitch defines a channel ban primarily as a channel-specific chat restriction. A banned viewer may still watch unless the channel enables the additional setting that prevents banned users from viewing livestreams. That viewing restriction applies to the particular channel, not to Twitch as a whole.
The Bottom Line
Use Block channel for broad recommendation removal, Not Interested for one shelf, and Content Display Preferences for labeled content. Use Block user for unwanted messages and whispers, Mute for silence, and a channel ban plus its viewing restriction when you control a stream and need to keep a viewer out.
