Choose the kind of control you need
There are three useful goals: block purchases through a child account, allow spending up to a limit, or require an adult to approve individual purchases. The available control and its scope depend on the platform. A family setting should not be assumed to cover a game publisher’s separate billing route or another linked account unless the platform confirms that it does.

- Block spending: Set a child’s PlayStation Monthly Spending Limit to 0.
- Cap spending: Set a positive PlayStation monthly limit.
- Approve each purchase: Xbox support search results describe child-purchase approval, but the current procedure and scope need to be checked in Xbox’s live guidance.
Set a PlayStation child-account spending limit
First, create a PlayStation family and add the child as a family member. Use the child’s own account rather than a shared adult account. The limit is account-linked, so it applies when that account is used on other devices too. PlayStation says the default monthly limit is 0, and purchases the child makes on PlayStation Store are paid from the family manager’s wallet. A parent or guardian appointed by the family manager may also be able to change limits, so coordinate who has that role. PlayStation’s parental-controls guidance

Change the limit on the web
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Family Management and select the child.
- Edit Monthly Spending Limit. Set it to 0 to block spending through that child account, or choose a positive amount for a cap.
Change the limit on PS5
- Open Settings.
- Go to Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, then open Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
Change the limit on PS4
- Open Settings.
- Go to Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management.
- Select the child, then open Applications/Devices/Network Features > Monthly Spending Limit.
Use the PlayStation Family app
PlayStation also lists the PlayStation Family app as a way to manage a child’s spending limit. App screens can change, so use the current in-app controls rather than relying on an outdated screen-by-screen path. PlayStation’s parental-controls guidance

Make the PlayStation controls harder to bypass
A spending limit is only useful if the child cannot switch to an unrestricted profile or change the restrictions. PlayStation recommends securing the console and adult accounts as well as setting the child’s limit. PlayStation’s instructions for preventing changes to parental controls
Protect console restrictions
- PS5: Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > PS5 Console Restrictions.
- PS4: Go to Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > PS4 System Restrictions.
Change the default console restriction code. PlayStation warns that forgetting it can require resetting a PS5 or initializing a PS4.

Secure adult profiles and prevent alternate access
Set a login passcode on adult profiles. PlayStation warns that without one, child family members may be able to avoid controls. Also disable new-user creation and guest login in the console restriction settings so a child cannot simply use another unrestricted local profile.
Use checkout protection for the adult account
Require Password at Checkout is a separate safeguard against purchases made by someone using the family manager’s account. It does not replace the child account’s Monthly Spending Limit. PlayStation’s US safety guidance for parents

What to do on Xbox
Xbox support search results list official guidance titled Prevent unauthorized purchases, Approve child purchases, and Manage child content in the Xbox Family Settings app. The pages could not be read in a way that verified their current instructions, setting names, defaults, or exact paths. For that reason, do not rely on an assumed menu path or assume an approval setting blocks every purchase type.
Open current Xbox Support or the Xbox Family Settings app and confirm what the setting covers before enabling it. Check that you are managing the child’s own Microsoft/Xbox account and the profile used on the console. Separately verify whether the game purchase is billed through the console store or through a publisher or linked account; the available official material here does not establish that Xbox family controls govern those other billing routes. Check that the change has taken effect
PlayStation says that if parental controls are changed while a child is in a game, the child should sign out and sign back in for the changes to take effect. After that, check the child account’s spending setting and make sure the child is using that account—not an adult profile or a different local user.
