Short answer: To boost VALORANT FPS on a low-end laptop or PC, first remove power, heat, background-process, driver, and graphics-setting bottlenecks. Plug in the computer, select Windows Best performance, enable Game Mode, close unnecessary applications, lower the settings that match your bottleneck, and test sustained frame time in a real match.
These steps can improve consistency, but they cannot guarantee 144 FPS. Riot’s own hardware tiers are approximate targets, and the result depends heavily on the CPU/GPU pairing, cooling, RAM, drivers, power limits, and Windows configuration.

What FPS can a low-end laptop realistically achieve?
There is no universal VALORANT FPS number for a low-end computer. Riot’s official PC specifications separate hardware into approximate 30 FPS minimum, 60 FPS recommended, and 144+ FPS high-end tiers. Those categories are useful targets, but they are not guarantees: laptop cooling, power limits, drivers, RAM configuration, background software, and the CPU/GPU pairing all affect the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set your goal around the display and the frame rate your system can sustain in a busy match. A stable 60 FPS is more useful than a brief 120 FPS peak followed by severe drops. A 60 Hz display cannot show every frame produced above 60 FPS, while a 144 Hz display benefits from a higher sustained frame rate. Do not chase 144 FPS if the laptop cannot maintain it without overheating or stuttering.

Riot’s reference performance tiers
| Approximate target | Riot reference CPU classes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 30 FPS minimum | Intel i3-540 or AMD Athlon 200GE class | Entry-level play, but not necessarily consistently smooth competitive play. |
| 60 FPS recommended | Intel i3-4150 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 class | A more sensible goal for a low-end gaming system. |
| 144+ FPS high-end | Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X class | A reference tier, not a promise that a laptop with a similar name will reach 144 FPS. |
Riot also lists Windows 10 build 19041 or later or 64-bit Windows 11, SSE 4.2 or AVX support, 4 GB of RAM, and 1 GB of VRAM among its platform requirements. Compare your graphics hardware with the current GPU examples on Riot’s specifications page as well as checking the CPU. On Windows 11, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are relevant to installation and launch eligibility; they are not FPS-boosting settings.
1. Identify the actual hardware and current limit
Before changing settings, record the machine you are testing. This prevents you from applying desktop advice to a laptop with a restricted mobile CPU or from blaming the GPU when the processor is the bottleneck.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select Performance. Note the CPU model, GPU or GPUs, and total memory.
- Open Settings > System > About to check the Windows edition and system type.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to see the display refresh rate.
- Note whether you are playing on battery or with the manufacturer’s power adapter connected.
- If the laptop shows both integrated and dedicated graphics, record both devices. A game can perform very differently depending on which GPU it uses.
For a second hardware view, press Win + R, type dxdiag, and check the System and Display tabs. Do not assume that a laptop’s CPU or GPU performs like the desktop part with a similar name. Mobile chips can have lower power limits, and two otherwise identical laptops can behave differently because of cooling and memory configuration.
2. Plug in the laptop and use Best performance
Start every comparison with the laptop connected to its proper manufacturer-supplied power adapter. Battery profiles commonly reduce CPU and GPU power to extend battery life, which can lower FPS or make frame times inconsistent.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Find Power mode.
- Select Best performance. The exact wording or location can vary slightly by Windows version and manufacturer.
Microsoft describes Best performance as the mode intended to maximize performance. It can also increase heat, fan noise, and battery consumption. If the laptop becomes hot enough to throttle, compare Best performance with Balanced rather than assuming the most aggressive mode will always produce the best sustained result.
Do not use an unknown “ultimate gaming” power plan, registry modification, or power-management script as a first step. The built-in Windows control is easier to understand, safer to reverse, and sufficient for establishing a useful baseline.
3. Turn on Game Mode and remove background load
Windows Game Mode is a low-risk setting worth testing. Open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and turn it on. Microsoft describes Game Mode as a way to optimize system performance while gaming, but there is no defensible fixed FPS increase for every VALORANT computer. Treat it as a baseline setting, not a guarantee.
Before testing VALORANT, close or pause applications that compete for CPU time, memory, storage, or overlays:

- Browsers with many tabs, especially video or animated pages
- Game launchers and downloads running in the background
- Recording, streaming, and instant-replay software
- Unnecessary Discord, Xbox Game Bar, Radeon, or NVIDIA overlays
- Cloud-sync jobs, file compression, scans, and large downloads
Use Task Manager’s Processes tab to sort by CPU and Memory. Do not end an unfamiliar Windows process simply because it appears near the top. Instead, close applications you recognize and test once with recording or streaming disabled. That controlled comparison tells you whether capture overhead is part of the problem.
4. Use a low-end VALORANT graphics configuration
There is no single low-end preset that produces the same FPS on every system. Change one group of settings, test it in the Practice Range, and then test in a real match or Deathmatch. Empty scenes can make a weak system look faster than it really is.
A sensible starting point
| Setting | Starting approach | Why and what to test |
|---|---|---|
| Display mode | Fullscreen | Use it as a clean baseline. Compare other modes only if you have a specific reason. |
| Resolution | Try 1280×720 or another lower resolution if the GPU is struggling. | A lower resolution reduces GPU work. If FPS barely changes, the CPU may be limiting performance instead. |
| Material, Texture, Detail, and UI Quality | Low | These are practical first settings when GPU load or available memory is limited. |
| Anti-Aliasing | None or the lowest available option | Lower visual quality can reduce GPU work, although the effect varies by hardware. |
| Anisotropic Filtering | 1x or the lowest available option | Use a low setting while diagnosing a GPU limit. |
| VSync | Off for the initial performance test | VSync can synchronize frames to the display and may add latency or limit the reported FPS. Re-enable it if screen tearing is more important to you than latency. |
| Vignette, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows | Off | These are unnecessary visual effects for a performance-first configuration. |
| Other clarity or sharpening options | Start disabled, then add back only what you prefer. | Image-quality features can have different costs on different GPUs. |
If the image is too blurry at 1280×720, raise the resolution one step at a time and watch the in-game frame-time graph. Competitive visibility matters, so the lowest possible resolution is not automatically the best choice. Keep the highest visual setting that does not cause unacceptable drops during fights.
If your client exposes Multithreaded Rendering, test it rather than copying an old guide that tells every player to disable it. Riot has changed threading behavior across patches, and the benefit depends on the processor and current game version.
5. Cap FPS when uncapped performance is unstable
Uncapped FPS is not always the smoothest option on a low-end laptop. It can make the CPU and GPU run at maximum effort, increase temperature, and produce a pattern of high peaks followed by sharp drops. A cap can reduce those swings and make frame pacing more consistent.
In VALORANT, check Settings > Video > General for the FPS-limit controls. Start by testing Limit FPS Always. Choose a value the system can maintain during a busy match, not the number it reaches while looking at an empty wall. For example, if the frame rate repeatedly jumps between 80 and 140 FPS but stays near 90 during combat, a cap around a sustainable 90 may feel better than leaving it uncapped. That is an example of the method, not a universal setting.
Match the goal to the monitor:
- On a 60 Hz display, a stable result near 60 FPS is a reasonable low-end target.
- On a 120 or 144 Hz display, use the highest frame rate the computer can sustain without large drops if the extra responsiveness matters to you.
- If the display is high refresh but the laptop cannot approach that rate, lowering settings may help, but no software option can create performance the CPU or GPU does not have.
6. Update graphics drivers from the right source
Use compatible, official drivers as a troubleshooting baseline. For a laptop, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page first. OEM drivers may contain the correct graphics switching, power-management, and display behavior for that specific model.

- AMD: AMD provides Windows driver downloads and an auto-detection tool for compatible Radeon graphics and Ryzen chipsets.
- NVIDIA: NVIDIA provides an official driver-download and hardware-identification path for GeForce products.
A newer driver is not guaranteed to increase FPS. The useful claim is narrower: a current, compatible driver removes one common variable and may fix a game-specific bug or poor GPU detection. Avoid third-party driver-updater sites and programs. If a new generic driver causes graphics switching or stability problems on a laptop, compare it with the OEM driver rather than repeatedly installing unrelated versions.
7. Find out whether the limit is the GPU, CPU, RAM, or heat
VALORANT’s FPS number tells you that performance is low; it does not tell you why. Use the game’s performance statistics and Task Manager while reproducing the problem.
Enable useful in-game statistics
Open Settings > Video > Stats and turn on Client FPS and Frame Time, using a graph where available. If your current client exposes CPU or GPU frame-time metrics, enable those too. Watch the results in the Practice Range and during a real match.
| What you observe | Likely direction | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| GPU utilization is close to its limit, and lowering resolution noticeably improves FPS. | GPU-bound | Lower resolution and GPU-heavy visual effects. Check that VALORANT is using the intended dedicated GPU if the laptop has one. |
| One or more CPU threads are saturated while GPU utilization is comparatively low; lowering resolution changes little. | CPU-bound | Close CPU-heavy background applications, use a sustainable FPS cap, improve cooling, and accept that a CPU upgrade may be the long-term limit. |
| Memory usage is near full, and stutters become worse when browsers or other programs are open. | RAM pressure or background load | Close applications, reduce startup load, and investigate whether the exact laptop model supports a compatible RAM upgrade. |
| FPS starts high and falls after several minutes of play. | Possible thermal or power throttling | Check temperatures and clock behavior with a trusted monitoring method, improve airflow, and repeat the test while plugged in. |
| FPS is high but the game still feels delayed or uneven. | Possibly frame pacing, VSync, network latency, or input latency rather than raw FPS. | Compare frame time, packet-loss and network statistics, the FPS cap, and VSync instead of lowering every setting. |
“Hot laptop” is a clue, not a diagnosis. A temperature spike, clogged vent, restricted intake, or a power adapter problem can all affect clocks, but measure the behavior before buying hardware or changing advanced settings. Riot specifically notes that CPU/GPU pairing and machine-specific conditions strongly affect expected performance; its optimizations will not affect every configuration equally.
8. Improve airflow before buying an upgrade
Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface and keep intake and exhaust vents clear. Avoid beds, blankets, and other soft surfaces that can obstruct airflow. Cleaning dust from vents can help, but follow the manufacturer’s guidance and do not open a laptop if doing so could damage it or void coverage.
If heat is the limiting factor, an optional laptop cooling pad or ventilated laptop stand may help the machine sustain its clocks. It is not a guaranteed VALORANT FPS upgrade, and there is no reliable universal number of frames that every pad adds. Its value depends on the laptop’s intake design, fan control, surface, and whether thermal throttling is actually occurring. Treat it as thermal support, not a replacement for a suitable CPU, GPU, or power adapter.
9. Check version-sensitive VALORANT advice
Old optimization guides often preserve settings that no longer exist or no longer apply. Riot’s patch history illustrates why you should check current notes before copying a tweak:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Patch 8.11: Riot updated threading behavior to improve performance on two-core machines and shorten loading times. A guide written before that change may recommend obsolete threading workarounds.
- Patch 11.06: Riot removed RawInputBuffer as a configurable PC option because the more performant behavior was enabled by default. Do not waste time searching for an old RawInputBuffer toggle if it is absent.
- Patch 12.09: Riot added AMD Anti-Lag 2 support for compatible hardware in certain GPU-bound situations, with drivers dated March 9, 2026 or later. This is conditional support for compatible AMD hardware, not a universal FPS setting.
Anti-Lag 2 is primarily about input-latency behavior. It should not be presented as a guaranteed way to increase raw FPS, and it should not be enabled by every AMD laptop regardless of model, driver, or current patch. Check the current patch notes and AMD compatibility information before testing it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Optional diagnostic software: use it only after the built-in checks
Windows Task Manager, Game Mode, power settings, and official graphics drivers should come first. If you still cannot identify what is consuming resources, an optional PC performance diagnostic tool such as Outbyte may help identify background processes, disk-space problems, or general Windows issues. Outbyte is not an official Riot tool, does not replace official AMD or NVIDIA drivers, and cannot guarantee higher VALORANT FPS.
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional Windows diagnostic and cleanup tool; review its suggestions rather than treating it as a guaranteed VALORANT FPS fix.
Use this kind of software for diagnosis and cleanup, not as permission to apply every automated “boost.” Review each suggested change, keep a restore point or backup where appropriate, and compare performance before and after one change at a time. A utility cannot overcome a CPU, GPU, RAM, cooling, or laptop power-limit ceiling.

When a hardware upgrade is justified
Upgrade only after you have identified the bottleneck:
- RAM: Consider it when memory is consistently full and the exact laptop supports an upgrade. Check the model’s memory type, maximum capacity, slot availability, and whether the existing memory is soldered. More RAM may reduce stutters from paging; it is not guaranteed to raise average FPS.
- SSD: An SSD can improve Windows and game loading and reduce general storage sluggishness. It is not a guaranteed raw-FPS upgrade. Confirm the laptop’s storage interface and physical format before buying one.
- Cooling: A stand or cooling pad is relevant only when airflow or heat is limiting sustained clocks. Check that diagnosis first.
- Power adapter: Replace one only if the existing adapter is damaged, underpowered, incompatible, or not recognized by the laptop. A replacement adapter is not a universal FPS upgrade.
- CPU or GPU: Laptop processors and graphics chips are usually not practical upgrades. On a desktop, a GPU upgrade makes sense for a GPU-bound system, while a CPU or platform upgrade may be needed for a CPU-bound system. Check the motherboard, power supply, cooling, and physical compatibility before buying.
Do not buy generic RAM or SSD recommendations without the exact laptop model. Compatibility research is more important than a product’s advertised speed.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Check Riot’s current requirements and record your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, refresh rate, and power state.
- Connect the official charger and set Windows to Best performance.
- Turn on Windows Game Mode.
- Close browsers, launchers, overlays, recording tools, and unnecessary background workloads.
- Start with low VALORANT settings, then lower resolution if the GPU is the limit.
- Enable Client FPS and Frame Time statistics and test both the Practice Range and a busy match.
- Install compatible graphics drivers from the laptop maker or official AMD/NVIDIA support.
- Compare uncapped FPS with a cap that the laptop can sustain.
- Investigate RAM pressure and thermal throttling before buying an accessory.
- Recheck current patch notes before applying advice about threading, RawInputBuffer, or AMD Anti-Lag.
Skip registry hacks, “hidden FPS” tweaks, third-party driver updaters, and claims that a cooling pad or one setting guarantees 144 FPS. The reliable process is controlled testing: change one variable, reproduce the same workload, and keep the change only if frame time and sustained gameplay improve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a low-end laptop run VALORANT at 144 FPS?
Riot’s minimum tier is an approximate 30 FPS target, not a promise of smooth competitive play. A laptop at that level may run VALORANT, but its FPS can vary with cooling, drivers, RAM, power limits, and background applications. Check whether the CPU, GPU, and operating system meet Riot’s current specifications before troubleshooting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I cap my VALORANT FPS on a low-end PC?
Yes, if the laptop can sustain the target. In VALORANT, open Settings > Video > General and test Limit FPS Always. Cap the game at a frame rate it maintains during busy fights rather than its highest empty-scene peak. A cap can reduce heat and frame-time swings.
Does Windows Game Mode increase VALORANT FPS?
Enable Windows Game Mode under Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and test it, but do not expect a fixed FPS increase. Its effect depends on the rest of the system and background workload.
Can a cooling pad boost FPS on a gaming laptop?
Only when heat or restricted airflow is causing the laptop to reduce its CPU or GPU clock speeds. A cooling pad may help sustain performance in that situation, but it does not add a guaranteed number of FPS and cannot overcome a hardware bottleneck.
Will streaming software improve VALORANT performance?
No. Stream-recording tools can add CPU, GPU, memory, or disk load, so test VALORANT once with local recording and overlays disabled. A cloud livestream service that loops prerecorded video does not increase the FPS rendered locally by VALORANT.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The best way to boost VALORANT FPS on a low-end laptop or PC is to remove avoidable limits first: play plugged in, select Windows Best performance, enable Game Mode, close background workloads, lower the settings that match your bottleneck, update official drivers, and test sustained frame time. If the CPU or GPU remains saturated after that, software cannot turn entry-level hardware into a 144 FPS system.
