The update can be the point at which a damaged file, stale setting, shader conflict, driver problem, platform cache, firmware issue, or genuine Fortnite regression becomes visible. The fastest fix is to identify what kind of failure you have and follow the matching branch.
At the August 11, 2026 status check, Epic listed Fortnite and its core services as operational, although some Epic Online Services and social-overlay components had degraded performance and scheduled maintenance. That makes a machine-specific diagnosis more useful than a blanket claim that Chapter 7 is broken.

Fortnite did not develop one universal Chapter 7 crash bug. Chapter 7 launched on November 29, 2025 with v39.00, but different players can experience different problems: damaged update files, stale configuration, shader or graphics-driver conflicts, CPU or firmware instability, platform cache problems, background software conflicts, or a genuine Fortnite regression.
At the latest status check for this article, August 11, 2026, Epic listed Fortnite, login, matchmaking, game services, and voice chat as operational. Epic did list degraded performance for some Epic Online Services and social-overlay components, along with scheduled maintenance from 06:00 to 08:00 UTC. That could explain lobby, login, or session trouble, but it is not evidence of a general Fortnite client-crash outage. If only your machine crashes while the service is operational, start with local troubleshooting.

What “around Chapter 7” means
The timing matters because several different updates are being grouped together online:
- November 29, 2025: Chapter 7 began with the v39.00 Pacific Break update.
- February 5, 2026: Epic’s v39.40 support notice acknowledged crashes, particularly on older-generation platforms. It did not establish one cause affecting every platform.
- July 30, 2026: Epic recorded downtime for the v41.30 update.
- August 11, 2026: the game was in Chapter 7 Season 3, with the public Battle Pass page listing August 20, 2026 Eastern Time as the end date.
Advice written during an earlier build can also be stale. In particular, Epic says the in-game DirectX 11 option was removed from Fortnite’s Rendering Mode setting in v40.10. Do not assume that an old guide telling you to select DirectX 11 still describes the current menu.
The five-minute checklist
- Check Epic’s status page and Fortnite live-issues channels. Look for an active incident involving Fortnite, login, matchmaking, or Epic Online Services. If many players are reporting the same failure immediately after maintenance, waiting may be the correct fix.
- Identify the exact failure. Note whether Fortnite closes to the desktop, opens the Crash Reporter, freezes, produces a black screen, resets the graphics driver, reboots the whole PC, reports an out-of-video-memory error, shows an Easy Anti-Cheat error, or fails only during login or matchmaking.
- Update the game, Windows or your console software, and the graphics driver. If the problem started immediately after a graphics-driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback process rather than downloading an arbitrary older driver.
- Verify Fortnite’s files on PC. In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three dots beside Fortnite, choose Manage, and select Verify. Epic says this repairs damaged or different files without affecting saved data.
- Reset Fortnite’s local configuration if the crash began after the update. Close the game, open
%localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient, and deleteGameUserSettings. Fortnite will rebuild it at the next launch, but your local graphics and control settings will return to defaults.
Use the symptom to choose the right branch
| What happens | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| Fortnite closes to the desktop or opens Crash Reporter | Verify files, clear the launcher cache, reset GameUserSettings, update or reinstall the graphics driver, and test without overlays. |
| The picture freezes, goes black, or the graphics driver resets | Lower rendering load, disable ray tracing, close monitoring and overclocking utilities, and investigate the GPU driver and shader cache. |
| The entire PC reboots or powers off | Do not treat this as an ordinary Fortnite file problem. Check system stability, temperatures, power, BIOS, Windows Event Viewer, and hardware-manufacturer guidance. |
| “Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource” | Verify files, use Performance Mode, lower resolution and graphics settings, close other applications, and update the driver. |
| Easy Anti-Cheat error or Fortnite appears to run but never opens | Follow Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat and launch-failure procedures, then test with overlays and security conflicts removed temporarily. |
| Only login, lobby, voice, or matchmaking fails | Check Epic Online Services and Fortnite status before changing graphics settings. A service or network problem is not the same as a client crash. |
PC fixes, in the order most likely to save time
1. Verify files before reinstalling
A seasonal update replaces or adds executable components, map assets, shaders, and configuration dependencies. If one file is incomplete or different from the expected version, the crash can look like a Chapter 7 bug even though the repair is local.
Use Epic Games Launcher → Library → Fortnite → three dots → Manage → Verify. Wait for the process to finish before launching the game. Verification is preferable to immediately deleting the whole installation because it is faster and preserves saved data according to Epic’s support guidance.
2. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Close Fortnite and exit Epic Games Launcher completely, including its system-tray process. Open %localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSaved and remove the launcher cache folders whose names begin with webcache, if they are present. Reopen the launcher and test Fortnite.
This targets stale launcher data; it is different from Fortnite’s shader cache and different again from GameUserSettings. If the folders are not present, do not create replacement folders or delete unrelated files.
3. Rebuild Fortnite’s local settings
After a major update, a previously valid graphics setting can become incompatible with the new build or driver. Close the game and delete only GameUserSettings from:

%localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient
Launch Fortnite and configure settings again gradually. Do not immediately restore an aggressive resolution, ray-tracing setting, overclock, or frame-rate limit; first establish whether the default configuration is stable.
4. Update the graphics driver, or roll it back if the timing points to the driver
Epic specifically recommends updating or reinstalling video drivers when post-update hitching or crashing begins. Get the driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, or from the computer manufacturer for a notebook. If Fortnite worked until a particular driver installation and then began crashing, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback or clean-install procedure.
A driver update is not automatically the answer. A new driver can introduce a game-specific regression, while an old driver can fail to handle newly updated shaders or rendering features. Record the driver version before changing it so you can report a meaningful timeline.
5. Deal with shader-cache and rendering conflicts
Epic documents a DirectX 12 shader-cache problem in which Fortnite repeatedly recompiles shaders. The result can be severe stutter and, on some systems, instability. Clearing the relevant graphics or DirectX shader cache can help. The first match afterward may stutter because the shaders have to be built again; that does not necessarily mean the fix failed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Windows’ temporary-storage tools or the graphics vendor’s documented cache-clearing method rather than deleting random Fortnite or Windows files. Test one change at a time and allow the game to complete its first shader-building pass.
6. Reduce rendering load
- In Fortnite’s video settings, select Performance rendering mode where it is available and appropriate. Epic says this can increase frame rate by lowering graphical fidelity.
- Lower resolution, 3D resolution, view distance, shadows, effects, and textures while testing.
- Disable hardware ray tracing. Ray tracing carries a substantial performance cost and is not a useful variable while diagnosing a crash.
- Close browsers, video players, recording tools, and other applications that consume memory or GPU resources.
- If storage is tight or the PC struggles with the asset load, open Fortnite’s installation options in the Epic launcher and remove optional high-resolution textures. Epic says this can save more than 15 GB.
If the game reports Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource, Epic’s recommended branch is to verify files, use Performance Mode, lower resolution or close other applications, and update the graphics driver. The message does not prove that the graphics card is physically defective; it means the requested rendering allocation could not be completed.
7. Test without overlays and background utilities
Temporarily close Discord overlay, GeForce or Radeon overlays, recording software, RGB and peripheral suites, motherboard utilities, overclocking tools, frame-rate counters, and hardware-monitoring programs. These applications hook into the game or graphics pipeline and can become incompatible after an update.

Epic also includes running the launcher as administrator and temporarily checking Windows security exclusions in its PC troubleshooting flow. Treat security exclusions as a diagnostic step only: do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows security, and restore normal protection after testing.

8. Check the processor and firmware-specific warnings
Some Epic notices describe narrow hardware branches rather than a universal Chapter 7 problem.
- Intel 13th- and 14th-generation Raptor Lake: Epic has acknowledged frequent crashes on several Core i5, i7, and i9 K, KF, F, and KS models. Its older support material documents a temporary
-d3d11launcher argument and directs affected users to contact Intel if the problem continues. This is a targeted workaround for the documented processor family, not a general current-build Fortnite fix. Epic’s in-game DX11 selection was removed in v40.10. - AMD Zen 5: Epic documented crashes after the 33.10 release and directed affected users to update the motherboard or notebook SBIOS/AGESA to the versions specified in its notice. The same material refers affected users to NVIDIA driver rollback instructions in relevant configurations.
Before changing BIOS, SBIOS, AGESA, or a graphics driver, write down the exact CPU, motherboard or notebook model, BIOS version, GPU, and driver version. Use the hardware manufacturer’s support page. A firmware update can solve compatibility problems, but an incorrect BIOS file or interrupted update can create a much larger problem.
9. Reinstall only after the earlier steps
Epic places launcher and Fortnite reinstallation after file verification, cache clearing, and driver checks for a reason. Reinstalling can repair a damaged installation, but it will not fix an unstable CPU, a bad driver, a conflicting overlay, a failing drive, or an Epic-side regression.
If reinstalling does not help and storage corruption is plausible, testing Fortnite on another healthy drive can be informative. Do not buy an SSD, GPU, RAM kit, cooling pad, Ethernet cable, or other gaming accessory simply because Fortnite crashes. Consider hardware replacement only when the PC fails Fortnite’s requirements, repeatedly reports video-memory problems, shows drive-health warnings, or has independently demonstrated instability.

10. Collect logs immediately after the next crash
Epic says logs collected immediately after a crash are more useful. Before contacting support, reproduce the problem once and then gather:
- DxDiag and MSInfo reports from Windows;
- Fortnite logs from
%localappdata%/FortniteGame/Saved/Logs; - the
FortniteGameandFortniteLauncherlogs, plus the dated backup log when one is present; - the exact Fortnite version, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, driver version, BIOS version, and storage drive;
- the precise trigger: launch, loading screen, entering a match, a map transition, a particular visual effect, or a certain number of minutes into a match;
- the full text of any Crash Reporter, video-memory, or Easy Anti-Cheat message.
A report saying “it crashes around Chapter 7” is difficult to act on. A report saying “v41.30, Windows 11, RTX driver version X, crash to desktop during match loading after file verification, with this log and error code” gives Epic a reproducible lead.

Optional Windows diagnostics after Epic’s official steps
Epic’s troubleshooting flow should remain primary. If Fortnite still crashes after verification, cache clearing, configuration reset, driver work, and overlay testing, an optional PC diagnostic tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may help you review application-crash logs and inspect broader Windows, disk-space, or performance issues. It cannot automatically repair a crashing Fortnite application, and results vary; use it as secondary triage, not as a guaranteed fix or a substitute for Epic, Microsoft, or hardware-manufacturer support.
Console troubleshooting
On PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, begin with the platform rather than PC-specific driver advice:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Install Fortnite updates and the latest console system update.
- Fully quit Fortnite instead of relying only on sleep, suspend, or Quick Resume.
- Power-cycle the console.
- Clear the platform cache using the console manufacturer’s procedure.
- Reinstall Fortnite if crashes continue or the console reports corrupted data.
- Check Epic’s status page and Community Issues board before assuming the console itself is defective.
Epic’s PlayStation guidance for corrupted-data errors is to delete Fortnite and download it again. Rebuilding the PlayStation database in Safe Mode has helped some players, but database rebuilding is a PlayStation procedure: follow Sony’s official instructions and do not interrupt the process.
For Nintendo Switch, Epic separately recommends checking for corrupt data. When loading is unusually slow, reinstalling Fortnite to internal storage instead of a microSD card is a useful diagnostic comparison. It does not prove that every Switch crash is caused by the card.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Android troubleshooting
First confirm that the device qualifies. Epic lists 64-bit ARM64 support, Android 10 or newer, at least 4 GB of RAM, and a qualifying GPU among the minimum requirements. If the phone or tablet does not meet those requirements, crashes and failed launches may not have a software fix.
On a qualifying device:
- Update Android and Fortnite.
- Open Android’s app settings, select Fortnite, open Storage, and clear the app cache. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Restart the device and test without screen-recording, game-booster, VPN, or overlay utilities.
- Reinstall Fortnite if clearing the cache does not help.
- Contact the device manufacturer if the game still crashes.
Use the manufacturer’s support instructions for device-specific cache and storage operations. Do not install unofficial APKs or “anti-crash” DLL or configuration packages.
When the problem is probably an Epic regression
Local troubleshooting is less likely to solve the issue when all of the following are true:
- the crash began immediately after a named Fortnite update;
- the same action reproduces it reliably;
- multiple players on the same platform and version report the same trigger; and
- Epic’s live-issues page, Fortnite Status account, Community Issues Trello board, Fortnite News, or a formal support notice acknowledges the problem.
The v39.40 notice about crashes on older-generation platforms is an example of an official version-specific acknowledgment. Community reports about Chapter 7-era crashes involving map events, shields, match loading, or mid-match transitions can help reveal patterns, but they are anecdotal. They cannot establish the cause, prevalence, or a reliable workaround. Compare reports for timing and reproduction steps, then wait for an official confirmation rather than treating a particular item, map feature, or cosmetic as proven to be responsible.

If the official services are operational, that does not rule out a Fortnite client regression. It only means the available status information is not showing a broad outage. A client bug can affect a platform, driver, hardware family, or gameplay path without taking down Fortnite for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Chapter 7 break Fortnite for everyone?
No. Chapter 7 updates may expose different problems on different systems, but Epic has not established one all-platform cause. Some crashes are official Fortnite regressions; others come from local files, settings, drivers, caches, overlays, firmware, or hardware.
Should I switch Fortnite to DirectX 11?
Yes, but only as a targeted legacy diagnostic for certain Intel 13th- and 14th-generation Raptor Lake processors covered by Epic’s support notice. Epic removed the in-game DirectX 11 option in v40.10, so do not treat -d3d11 as a universal fix for current Fortnite builds.
Should I reinstall Fortnite after a Chapter 7 crash?
Usually no. Start with Epic’s status check, file verification, launcher-cache clearing, configuration reset, driver checks, and overlay removal. Reinstall only after those steps, because a reinstall will not fix a driver, firmware, overlay, hardware, or Epic-side problem.
What should console players do when Fortnite crashes?
It can help when the console has stale cache data or corrupted installation files. Fully quit Fortnite, update the game and system, power-cycle the console, clear its cache, and reinstall if the crashes continue. On Switch, Epic also suggests comparing internal storage with a microSD installation for slow-loading problems.
What are the Android requirements for Fortnite?
Confirm 64-bit ARM64 support, Android 10 or newer, at least 4 GB of RAM, and a qualifying GPU. Then update Fortnite, clear its app cache, restart, and reinstall if necessary. Contact the device manufacturer if the problem remains.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat “Fortnite keeps crashing around Chapter 7” as a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check Epic’s status first, identify the exact failure, verify files, reset the local configuration, update or appropriately roll back drivers, lower rendering load, remove overlays, and then investigate platform- or hardware-specific issues. If many players can reproduce the same crash after an update or Epic acknowledges it, the right solution may be a game patch rather than another local tweak.
