If you can choose what to use, a cheaper appliance or other household object may therefore be a better candidate than an expensive one; the manual does not give a specific object or timeframe that guarantees breakage.

Let your Sim complete the repair. EA’s Handiness skill guide says repairing broken objects is available at Handiness level 1, and repair work builds the skill.
EA’s manual also lists paying to replace a broken object or hiring a repairperson as ways to deal with breakage. Those options may restore the household item, but they do not meet an objective that specifically requires your Sim to repair it.

Watch out for electrical repairs
Repairing electrical appliances can electrocute your Sim. EA warns that electrocution can have deadly consequences if it happens more than once in a row, so do not treat an electrical repair as risk-free.
Does this work for a quest or event?
These steps cover the general break-and-repair mechanic, but the available official guidance does not specify the requirements for a particular quest or event. A task may require your Sim to perform the repair, so replacing the item or hiring a repairperson may not count. If the objective does not register, check its wording for a required object or interaction rather than assuming every broken item qualifies.

Is extra content required?
No. EA says Handiness and basic repairs are part of The Sims 4 base game. The optional Restoration Workshop Kit adds repair-focused gameplay, but it is not required to repair ordinary broken household objects. EA lists The Sims 4 and game updates as requirements for the kit.
