Their outlines can reveal where an entity is when a wall or another obstruction hides its body—but the shortcut does not make blocks transparent or reveal terrain, ores, or anything else behind walls.
What F3+B shows
F3+B toggles the hitbox overlay for entities, such as mobs and other entities in the world. A hitbox outline can remain visible when the entity itself is obscured, helping you locate it. It marks the entity’s hitbox; it is not an x-ray mode and does not expose blocks behind the obstruction. The Minecraft Wiki’s hitbox tutorial describes the shortcut and overlay.
The F3 debug screen and this shortcut are features of Java Edition. The cited references do not establish an equivalent Bedrock Edition shortcut. The Minecraft Wiki’s debug-screen reference identifies the feature as Java Edition-only.
How to toggle entity hitboxes
- In a Java Edition world, hold F3 and tap B.
- Look for outlines around entities. They show hitboxes, not the blocks behind them.
- Press F3+B again to turn the overlay off.
If your keyboard uses a function-key layer, you may need to hold Fn as well, for example Fn+F3+B. The exact key behavior depends on your device.

If the shortcut does not work
Check the in-game Debug Options screen. Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 25w31a notes say the debug screen remains accessible with F3 and that some earlier debug features, including entity hitbox rendering, can be toggled in Debug Options. In the Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes, Mojang identifies F3+F6 as the key combination for opening Debug Options.
- Try the device’s function-key combination if F3 alone is handled by a hardware function.
- Open Debug Options and check the entity hitbox rendering control if the shortcut is unavailable or the display setting may have changed.
- Keyboard layouts and systems can affect how debug combinations behave. A Mojang issue-tracker report documents inconsistent behavior in some cases; it does not mean every failure has the same cause.
Do not confuse it with F3+N
F3+N is associated with switching spectator mode in Java Edition; it is not the entity-hitbox shortcut and does not itself let you see through walls. The debug-screen reference covers the distinction.
