Use wheat to breed two adult sheep, shears to harvest wool without killing them, grass to let the wool grow back, and dye to set a sheep’s color. Colored parents can also produce colored lambs, so a small pen can become a renewable source of almost any wool color. The exact natural colors you find in the wild depend on the biome in Java Edition 1.21.5 and later.

What to prepare before bringing sheep home
You do not need a complicated farm. A fenced pen, wheat, shears, grass and the dyes you want are enough. Build the enclosure near your base so you can return easily after feeding or harvesting.
- Two adult sheep: Breeding requires a pair of adults. Lambs cannot be used as parents until they mature.
- Wheat: Microsoft’s Bedrock sheep behavior reference lists wheat as the sheep’s breeding item.
- Shears: Keep them in your hotbar when you are ready to harvest wool. Shearing is performed directly on the sheep.
- Grass blocks: The sheep must eat grass before its wool can grow back. Ordinary dirt alone will not provide the required meal.
- Dye: Carry the color you want to apply. Dye is used on the sheep itself, not only on wool blocks.
- A secure pen: Fences, a gate and enough space prevent sheep from wandering while still letting them reach grass.
How to breed sheep
- Put two adult sheep in the same pen. A narrow enclosure makes it easier to feed the intended pair and prevents other animals from taking the wheat.
- Hold wheat and use it on the first sheep. The sheep should show the breeding-mode effect.
- Use wheat on the second adult sheep. Both animals must be fed for breeding to begin.
- Wait for the lamb to appear. The parents remain in the pen, and the new lamb starts with the color mechanics described below.
- Repeat only after the parents are ready again. If feeding does nothing, check that both sheep are adults and that you are using wheat rather than another crop.
Separate color groups with fences or nameable sections if you are trying to preserve specific breeding lines. Mixing every sheep in one crowd makes it difficult to identify which parents produced a lamb.

How color inheritance works when breeding
Dyed sheep keep their colors when they are sheared and when they breed. Compatible parent colors can produce a mixed-color baby instead of simply copying one parent. The ranching mechanics reference gives blue plus white producing light blue. Mojang’s dye guide gives another practical example: breeding yellow and red sheep can make orange.
Use this deliberately. Keep one blue and one white adult together when you want light-blue offspring, or maintain yellow and red adults when orange is your target. If a particular color matters, do not rely on wild sheep alone; dye the parents first and record which pair produced the desired result.

How to shear sheep without killing them
- Wait for an adult sheep with a full coat. A sheep that has already been sheared will not provide another harvest until it regrows wool.
- Equip shears. Select them in your hotbar so the interaction uses the tool rather than wheat or dye.
- Use the shears on the sheep. Wool drops onto the ground and the sheep remains alive.
- Collect the wool. Pick it up before leaving the pen or use a hopper-based collection arrangement if your farm is built around one.
- Return the sheep to grass. It must eat grass before another shearing is possible.
Mojang’s Block of the Week: Wool explains why shearing is preferable to killing a sheep for wool: one shearing yields one to three wool blocks and leaves the animal available for future harvests. The same guidance notes that sheep regrow wool after eating grass.

How to make wool grow back
Leave visible grass blocks inside the enclosure. After the sheep eats, its coat returns and it becomes a shearing candidate again. If the pen contains only dirt, stone or decorative blocks, the sheep has no grass to consume and the cycle stops.

- Place grass throughout the pen rather than in a single easily blocked corner.
- Avoid filling the entire floor with solid paths or slabs that prevent the sheep from reaching grass.
- After shearing, watch for the sheep to eat before assuming the shears or the animal are broken.
- Keep the enclosure large enough that several sheep can reach grass instead of crowding one block.
How to dye a sheep
- Choose the sheep. Dyeing works directly on the animal, so you do not need to shear it first.
- Hold the dye. Select the desired color in your hotbar.
- Use the dye on the sheep. Its wool color changes immediately.
- Shear the dyed sheep when the coat is full. The resulting wool follows the sheep’s current color.
- Keep the dyed animal identified. Use separate pens or visual markers if you are maintaining several colors.
Dyeing is the most predictable way to obtain a specific color because you choose the color directly rather than waiting for a breeding combination. Mojang’s guide, Craft colorfully with dyes, confirms that sheep can be dyed and that their colors can then be carried into breeding.
Direct dyeing versus breeding for a color
Use direct dyeing when you need a color immediately or when the color combination is uncertain. Use breeding when you want to expand a color line without repeatedly spending dye. A practical workflow is to dye two starter sheep, breed them, and then keep the resulting color line in its own section of the ranch.

Natural sheep colors and the Java 1.21.5 biome rule
Natural spawns are not identical across every Minecraft version. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes state that sheep wool color depends on the biome where the sheep spawns. The release notes describe these common patterns:

This table applies specifically to the Java Edition 1.21.5 behavior described by Mojang’s Spring to Life release notes. Do not assume that a natural-color rule from that release applies unchanged to older Java versions or to Bedrock Edition. For reliable color control in any edition, use dyeing and controlled breeding instead of searching indefinitely for a naturally spawned color.

A reliable wool-farm workflow
- Start with a mixed starter flock. Bring at least two adults into a secure pen and feed them wheat to increase the population.
- Divide by purpose. Keep a general wool group separate from color-breeding pairs so you do not accidentally replace a parent with a random-color sheep.
- Apply dyes to the parent pairs. Set the colors before breeding if a particular offspring color is the goal.
- Maintain grass coverage. The regrowth step is the bottleneck in a shearing farm, not the number of shears you carry.
- Shear only full-coated adults. Collect the wool and leave the sheep in the grass pen.
- Breed periodically. Feed wheat when you need more animals or when a color line needs to be expanded.
- Store wool by color. Separate chests or labeled sections prevent white, black, brown and dyed wool from being mixed during building projects.
Wool supports beds, banners, carpets and paintings, so a renewable pen is useful for both survival construction and large decorative projects. Shearing lets the same breeding stock supply those projects repeatedly.
Troubleshooting sheep farms

The breeding item in Microsoft’s Bedrock behavior reference is wheat, while the biome-based natural-color change cited here comes from Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes. Those references establish the mechanics for the editions and version they describe; they do not justify treating every sheep detail as identical across all releases.
If a behavior differs in your world, first identify the edition and version shown on the title screen or world settings. Then distinguish between natural spawning and player-controlled color: natural colors can depend on biome rules, while a dye applied directly to a sheep gives you an intentional color choice.
