Aroma does not install or play ROM files by itself. It is a Wii U homebrew environment. For retro-console ROMs, use an Aroma-compatible emulator; for a personal Wii U game dump, use a Wii U title installer; and for Wii or GameCube images, use the separate vWii homebrew setup. The right steps depend on what kind of file you have.
Identify the file before you install anything
“ROM” can refer to several different things. These formats do not share one installer or one universal folder.
| What you have | Use this method | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Retro game files for systems such as NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, or PlayStation | Launch an Aroma-compatible emulator and browse to the folder that emulator documents for games. | From the Wii U Menu, inside the emulator. |
| A Wii U game dump made from a disc you own or are otherwise entitled to use | Prepare the installable title files and install them with an Aroma-compatible WUP Installer GX2. | As a title on the Wii U Menu. |
| A Wii or GameCube disc image | Set up the Wii U’s vWii environment separately and use an appropriate vWii loader. | In vWii, not as a native Wii U Aroma title. |
| A Virtual Console inject package | Create it with a platform-appropriate injector, then install the resulting Wii U title package. | As a Wii U Menu title, if the inject is compatible. |
The Wii U Hacks Guide treats emulators, Wii U game dumping, and other homebrew as separate workflows; the Wii Hacks Guide documents the separate vWii setup.
What you need before starting
- A Wii U that already boots Aroma successfully. If Aroma is not working, finish or repair that setup before troubleshooting games.
- An SD card formatted as FAT32. The Wii U Hacks Guide recommends a 32,768-byte (32-KB) allocation unit when formatting with GUIFormat and warns against naming the card
wiiu. Follow its current SD preparation instructions for the folder layout and current setup details. - A computer or other device that can extract archives and copy files to the SD card.
- Enough free storage for the application and the files you intend to use. The guide recommends a 32-GB SD card for game backups because some Wii U titles are around 20 GB; a smaller card may be enough for homebrew alone. Avoid Class 4 cards and questionable marketplace cards, and keep a backup of the card. See the guide’s FAQ for its storage guidance.
- Game files obtained from your own dumps or another source you are legally entitled to use. Copyright and backup laws vary by jurisdiction; do not download or distribute unauthorized copies.
For the guide’s currently supported firmware wording and steps, consult the live Wii U Hacks Guide; firmware guidance can change and differs by region.

- The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
- Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.
Confirm Aroma is active
- Insert the prepared SD card and boot the Wii U.
- Start Aroma through the Environment Loader or the installed PayloadLoader route you configured.
- Open the Wii U Menu. If the
homebrew_on_menuplugin is installed, compatible WUHB applications can appear there as icons.
Aroma supports WUHB homebrew bundles that can launch from the Wii U Menu; ordinary WUHB apps do not use the old Homebrew Launcher workflow. Some older RPX homebrew, including some RetroArch releases, may not work correctly in Aroma. Check the Aroma getting-started guide and the app’s own documentation for compatibility.
Play retro ROMs with an Aroma-compatible emulator
This is the usual route for files from systems such as NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, or PlayStation. Aroma provides the environment in which homebrew runs; the emulator loads the game files.

- The Wii U Game pad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature, button controls and analog sticks

- In Super Mario Bros. U, swoop through levels and cling to walls when Mario transforms into Flying Squirrel Mario, or gently float through the air while hanging onto Tiny Balloon Yoshi.
- Super Luigi U lets you experience high replayability and satisfaction from mastering more than 80 intense new courses. Each course contains a reduced time limit and a higher concentration of enemies and obstacles.
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Choose an emulator whose release explicitly supports Aroma or WUHB. Use the project’s official release page or a trusted homebrew distribution source. Do not assume that an older Wii U build will work just because it worked with another homebrew environment.
- Extract the downloaded archive on your computer. Copy the WUHB application into the standard homebrew apps directory, typically
SD:/wiiu/apps/. The exact file and any companion files depend on the emulator. - Read that emulator’s documentation and copy any required cores, BIOS files, support folders, or configuration files to the exact paths and with the exact names it specifies.
- Create or use the ROM directory recommended by the emulator. For example, an emulator may use
SD:/roms/, but that is only an example—not an Aroma-wide standard. - Copy in ROMs you are entitled to use. Extract archives if the emulator or core requires loose files; support for ZIP files and particular extensions varies.
- Insert the SD card, boot Aroma, and launch the emulator from the Wii U Menu. Browse to or scan the documented ROM directory, then test one known-compatible game before copying a large collection.
Check compatibility at the level of the specific emulator and core: supported systems, file extensions, BIOS revisions, controls, save states, shaders, and performance are not guaranteed across applications. A game that launches in an emulator is not necessarily suitable for conversion into a Virtual Console inject.
If the emulator is missing from the Wii U Menu
- Confirm the archive was extracted and the application is in
SD:/wiiu/apps/. - Confirm the release is intended for Aroma; older ELF or RPX builds may use an incompatible workflow.
- Check that Aroma actually booted, that the SD card is FAT32, and that the required
homebrew_on_menuplugin is present if the app relies on it.
If the only available version is legacy homebrew, use a current Aroma-compatible release if one exists. Tiramisu may be a fallback for specific legacy applications, but it is not a universal fix; the guide describes it as an archived environment. Follow the relevant environment documentation rather than mixing files between setups.

If the emulator opens but cannot find games
- Use the folder specified by that emulator, not automatically
SD:/wiiu/environments/aroma/orSD:/wiiu/apps/; those are not universal ROM libraries. - Check whether the emulator needs extracted files, supports the file extension, or requires BIOS files in a particular location.
- Make sure the SD card is readable and the ROMs were copied successfully.
Install a personal Wii U game dump
A Wii U game dump is not the same thing as a retro ROM. The following workflow is for a personal Wii U disc dump prepared for installation. The Wii U Hacks Guide documents dumping with wudd and installing with WUP Installer GX2; follow its current game-dumping instructions if filenames or screens differ.
- Boot into Aroma and place Aroma-compatible WUP Installer GX2 and the
wuddhomebrew application on the SD card. - Launch
wuddfrom the Wii U Menu. Select Dump partition as .app, choose the disc’s Game partition, and let the dump finish. - Power down as appropriate before removing the card, then connect the SD card to a computer. The guide shows the resulting title folder in a form such as
GMXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXinsideSD:/wudump/WUP-X-XXXX/. - Copy the generated title folder into
SD:/install/. Createinstallat the SD card root if it does not exist. The title folder must be directly inside it, not nested inside another extra folder. - Reinsert the card, boot Aroma, and launch WUP Installer GX2. Select the title, choose Install, confirm, and select the destination: USB for Wii U-formatted external storage or NAND for internal storage.
- Return to the Wii U Menu and confirm that the title appears and launches. Once installation is verified, remove the temporary title folder from
SD:/install/to reclaim SD-card space.
WUP Installer GX2 installs Wii U title packages; it does not install arbitrary NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, or PlayStation files. The guide also publishes hashes for selected recommended downloads on its hashes page; compare a file’s hash when one is provided.

Choose the destination with storage in mind
Use internal NAND only for a modest amount of content when you have room. For a larger Wii U library, a dedicated external drive is generally more practical. The Wii U formats its USB storage itself; formatting erases the drive, and the resulting storage is tied to the console that formatted it rather than being a normal computer-readable game drive. Some drives need a Y-cable or external power, and compatibility varies. Do not format a drive containing files you need to keep.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Virtual Console injects are a separate, advanced workflow
An inject is a converted Wii U title package, not simply a ROM copied to the SD card. The process generally involves a compatible base title, a ROM in an accepted format and size range, an injector or conversion tool, emulator or title configuration, and installation of the finished package with a title installer.

Inject compatibility depends on the platform, base title, injector, ROM, controls, and support for features such as saving, video, and audio. There is no single recipe that works for NES, SNES, GBA, N64, DS, and every other target. For most users, an Aroma-compatible emulator is simpler to manage and update. Consider an inject when Wii U Menu integration or a specific platform feature matters enough to justify the extra compatibility work. Avoid arbitrary WAD files and unverified packages.
Wii and GameCube images need vWii homebrew
Aroma runs in the Wii U environment; Wii and GameCube game loading normally belongs to the Wii-compatible mode called vWii. That requires a separate setup and a suitable vWii loader, such as USB Loader GX or Nintendont, rather than WUP Installer GX2. Use the separate Wii Hacks Guide for vWii instructions. A drive formatted by the Wii U is not automatically suitable for vWii loaders, and some USB drives need additional power.
Storage: what belongs on the SD card and what belongs on USB
| Storage | Good fit | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| FAT32 SD card | Aroma files, homebrew apps, emulator files and libraries, and temporary Wii U install folders. | Required for the standard initial setup; capacity and card quality matter. Keep a computer backup and avoid removing it while software is accessing it. |
| Wii U-formatted USB drive | Installed Wii U titles when SD space is insufficient. | Formatting erases existing data and makes the drive unavailable for ordinary computer use until reformatted. Power needs and vWii use require consideration. |
The Wii U Hacks Guide FAQ says an SD card is needed for first-time homebrew setup, though USB can later hold installed titles. A USB drive does not replace the SD card for all Aroma files or initial setup.
Troubleshoot title installation and boot problems
WUP Installer GX2 cannot find the title
- Confirm the folder is at
SD:/install/<title-folder>, directly underinstall. - Check that the dump completed, the card has enough free space, and the package is intended for Wii U installation.
- Make sure the installer is an Aroma-compatible release and that the destination USB drive has already been formatted by the Wii U.
Installation fails or the Wii U reports corrupted data
An incomplete dump, damaged SD card, incorrect folder nesting, low storage, an improperly generated package, unstable USB power, or an interruption during installation can cause failures. Back up the SD card, remove the incomplete install folder, and re-copy or re-dump the files. Check guide-provided hashes where available, test with a known-good personal dump, and use USB rather than filling NAND with large titles. Do not repeatedly force the console off during an installation.
Aroma stops booting
First remove the SD card and try a normal boot to see whether the issue is limited to the card or Aroma files. Then check the Aroma folder structure and restore a known-good SD-card backup if needed. Where available, use the Environment Loader to select another environment. Do not casually delete or alter PayloadLoader files: the PayloadLoader guide warns that a factory reset does not uninstall the injected PayloadLoader.
Quick Recap
Legal and safety essentials
- Use dumps and game files you are legally entitled to use; the rules for making or using backups vary by location.
- Do not distribute copyrighted ROMs or download games from unauthorized repositories.
- Back up important SD-card and console data before changing files or installing titles.
- Install only packages from sources you trust, and verify published hashes when available.
- Use a dedicated USB drive for Wii U formatting rather than risking data on a general-purpose drive.
