Start with the new Pokémon you want to use, then build teammates around the situations it cannot handle—not around a rule that every team needs six different types. Your best lineup depends on the game, the available Pokémon, and the mode you plan to play. Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes a useful example because its real-time battles reward more than type coverage: move timing, area of effect, and when you can switch also matter.
Start with the Pokémon you want to build around
First confirm the Pokémon’s type, available moves, and any evolution or Mega Evolution that could change its role. The three named starter partners in Pokémon Legends: Z-A are Chikorita (Grass), Tepig (Fire), and Totodile (Water), but the official starter listing does not establish a universally best choice. Choose the one you want to play, then plan its support.
Do not assume that the same roster or move options apply across Pokémon games. Check what is actually available in your game and mode before settling on teammates.
Find the gaps your centerpiece leaves
List the situations your chosen Pokémon struggles to answer. Type matchups are a useful first filter, but a teammate can help through its own typing, a useful move, or a different battle function. Look for practical answers to the threats you expect to face rather than trying to collect one Pokémon of every type.

Then review the lineup as a whole. Several teammates may cover the same situation while leaving another gap, or they may share a vulnerability that becomes troublesome. When two candidates seem similarly useful, compare their type synergy, move options, switching flexibility, and performance in your chosen mode.
For Legends: Z-A, weigh move timing and area
Pokémon Legends: Z-A uses real-time battles. Nintendo says players must consider not only type matchups but also switching opportunities, move execution time, and area of effect. As Nintendo puts it: “In addition to type matchups, you’ll have to consider the best opportunities for swapping out Pokémon or using moves, as well as how long each move takes to execute and its area of effect.” Nintendo’s official game page describes those battle considerations.

That means a move that looks like useful coverage on paper may not be the right answer in practice if its timing, area, or targeting makes it difficult to use effectively in the situation you care about. Consider these factors when choosing between otherwise plausible teammates and moves.
Build for the mode you play
Story and the Z-A Royale
In the story, battles help Pokémon gain experience and stats, learn moves, and evolve. Treat the team as something you can revise: new moves and evolutions may change which gaps need filling. Before entering the Royale, prepare during the day by battling wild Pokémon and stocking useful battle items, as advised in the official “Making the Most of Your Adventure” guide.

Z-A Battle Club
The Battle Club is a timed mode for up to four players in which defeats earn points. Mega Power orbs and temporary stat boosts may appear, and moves’ areas or targeting patterns can matter when several opponents are present. A lineup built for story progression is not automatically suited to this mode; assess how its moves and battle functions work in a timed, multi-opponent setting. See the official Z-A Battle Club overview.
Account for Mega Evolution
Mega Evolution requires the relevant Pokémon to hold a Mega Stone. Some Mega-Evolved Pokémon may change type, so check the form you plan to use rather than relying only on the Pokémon’s usual typing. Reassess the lineup’s matchups and shared vulnerabilities with that change in mind. Nintendo’s game page covers Mega Evolution, while the adventure guide explains preparation and progression.

Compare teammate candidates before committing
Use these questions to choose between potential additions; they are practical comparison points, not a published scoring formula.
- Matchups: Does the candidate help against situations the centerpiece handles poorly, and does it add another vulnerability the team already has?
- Move coverage: Does it bring a useful answer the rest of the lineup lacks?
- Real-time usability: In Z-A, are its move execution time and area suitable for the battles you expect, and can you switch it in at a useful moment?
- Mode fit: Does it help in story and Royale preparation, timed multiplayer, or the specific mode you care about?
- Development requirements: Does its intended role depend on evolving it or using a Mega Stone?
Train, try the lineup, and revise
- Confirm the roster and moves. Check the options available in your game, including any evolution or Mega Evolution you plan to use.
- Write down the gaps. Identify matchups and battle situations your centerpiece does not answer well.
- Choose complementary teammates. Compare candidates for coverage, shared weaknesses, battle function, and—if you are playing Z-A—move timing, area, and switching.
- Prepare for the intended mode. In the story, battle and adapt as Pokémon learn moves or evolve. For the Royale, stock useful battle items; for Battle Club, consider the timed, multi-opponent format.
- Review what goes wrong in play. If a recurring situation exposes a gap, adjust a move or teammate and try again. Competitive guidance for Scarlet and Violet Regulation Set H discusses reviewing move, item, Ability, and Tera Type choices after play, but those format-specific mechanics are not Z-A rules or roster advice.
Keep game-specific advice in its lane
Competitive recommendations for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Regulation Set H belong to that game and ruleset. They can suggest useful questions to ask about a lineup, but they should not be treated as current Z-A rules or as proof that a team works in Z-A. Check current in-game details for the roster and rules that apply to your own play.
