How to Build a Character with a Species from Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy

A practical guide to building a character with Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy options, including what the publisher confirms, what to verify in the book, and how to check rules compatibility.

To build a character using a species from Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy, first confirm which D&D 5e rules version your group is using, then choose a character concept and check the species’ printed traits in the book. The publisher says the sequel adds six playable animal races and two subraces, but its public overview does not provide the complete roster or rules. Treat the examples below as starting points, not a complete species list or mechanical guide.

What the book adds—and what it does not establish publicly

Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy is a sequel setting and adventure on the continent of Wesden. It can be played without first completing the original Humblewood adventure, so you do not need to build a character for the earlier campaign before using the sequel’s options. The publisher describes the sequel as tied to the original setting while still being fully enjoyable without having played that adventure first.

Hit Point Press describes the book as adding six playable animal races and two subraces, a new Gadgeteer class, three subclasses, and new spells, feats, and backgrounds. Its digital product listing describes a PDF of more than 250 pages, an adventure for levels 5–8, and additional monsters, maps, standees, and reference cards. The listing also mentions more than 40 monsters and NPCs. These details establish the breadth of the book, but not the rules for any particular character option.

The public campaign overview names Rockburrow Jerbeen, Seetas, and Tilias. It describes Rockburrow Jerbeen as chinchilla-like and helpful, Seetas as parrot-like with mimicry, and Tilias as gecko-like, sticky-footed, and inventive. These are short flavor cues—not complete rules summaries, a list of all six races, or a basis for assuming what a character can do in play. Use the sourcebook for names, prerequisites, and traits.

In particular, the count of six races and two subraces is not a substitute for a roster. The examples name three options, but the public page does not establish whether each named example is a race or a subrace, how the two subraces relate to the full roster, or what their traits do. Avoid filling in those gaps from animal imagery or from options in the original setting. The book’s actual player-option entries are the place to verify those details.

Check your table’s rules version before choosing options

The publisher’s campaign page describes the player content as compatible with both 5e 2014 and 2024. Its current digital product listing specifically says it is compatible with D&D 5e 2014. Because those pages describe compatibility at different levels of specificity, do not assume that every option works unchanged under either rules set. Ask the DM which rules version the campaign uses and how the group will handle any conversion or interaction that is not spelled out in the book.

That question matters before you spend time optimizing a character. A character sheet built with one rules set in mind may use different creation procedures or feature terminology than the table expects. Ask whether the group will use the book’s text as printed, use a specific conversion, or make a ruling for any unclear interaction. Write down the answer so the character’s choices stay consistent between sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also confirm that the DM allows third-party content. A character option being printed in a published setting book does not, by itself, mean every campaign permits it. D&D Beyond’s overview of the original Humblewood setting notes that third-party content requires DM approval. Get approval before settling on an option that depends on a species trait, class feature, feat, or spell the group may not use.

  • Ask which rules set applies: 2014 5e, 2024 rules, or a stated mix.
  • Ask what is permitted: the full book, selected options, or none of its player content.
  • Ask about starting level: the sequel’s listed adventure is for levels 5–8. Confirm the level at which your character begins and which features should be on the sheet at that level.
  • Resolve unclear interactions first: if a character feature uses a rule that differs between the table’s rules version and the book’s wording, ask the DM how it will work before building around it.

Start with a character idea, not an assumed animal ability

Choose a short concept that explains what the character wants, how they approach problems, and why they are joining this campaign. For example: an inventive traveler who relies on constructed tools; a persuasive mimic who uses performance to open doors; or a small, community-minded adventurer whose first instinct is to help. These are roleplaying starting points, not claims about the full capabilities of any species.

Then look for a species and subrace in the book that suits the idea. The animal inspiration can help with voice, appearance, habits, or a character’s outlook, but it does not tell you the actual rules. A gecko-like description does not, on its own, establish climbing speed; a parrot-like description does not define the mechanics or limits of mimicry. Read the printed trait text and build from that.

It can help to separate three decisions that are easy to blur together: who the character is, what the species rules allow, and what the campaign will ask the character to do. A helpful character might be a healer, a negotiator, a scout, or simply a reliable companion; the flavor word “helpful” does not select a class or guarantee a particular feature. Likewise, a character can borrow inspiration from an animal description without needing to roleplay a stereotype. Use the species’ written description as a prompt, then make choices that feel specific to your character.

  1. Write the concept in one sentence. State what the character does and what motivates them, such as “a practical tinkerer who wants to make travel safer for their community.”
  2. Find a species and any eligible subrace in the book. Verify the exact option name, its prerequisites, and whether the DM has approved it.
  3. Read each trait in full. Note what it permits, when it can be used, any action or resource cost, and any stated limits. Do not substitute flavor text for rules.
  4. Check the campaign fit. Consider whether the traits matter in the kinds of scenes the DM expects, including travel, exploration, social encounters, and combat.
  5. Only then select class and other options. Choose features that support the idea and work with the species traits under the table’s rules.

Compare species by rules and campaign fit

Once you have the sourcebook open, compare the options you are considering in a small set of practical categories. The publisher’s public page does not provide enough mechanics to rank the sequel’s species or identify a “best” choice; the comparison has to come from the actual printed traits and the campaign’s needs.

A useful comparison is not just a count of features. Read the whole trait, including when it works, what it costs, how often it can be used, and whether it requires a particular situation. Then compare that with your class features and the campaign’s likely scenes. A movement trait may be valuable in a game with frequent terrain challenges; a social or sensory feature may matter more in a campaign focused on investigation and conversation. The DM’s description of the campaign is a better guide than a generic tier list.

What to compare Question to answer from the book and with your DM
Concept and story Does the species’ description give you a character voice, background, or motivation you want to play?
Printed traits What does each feature actually do, and what are its conditions, uses, and limits?
Action economy Does a feature take an action, bonus action, reaction, or other stated resource? Would you realistically choose it over what your class already asks you to do?
Movement and senses Do any printed movement or sensory features help in the campaign’s expected situations? Check the text rather than inferring them from an animal’s real-world traits.
Rules-version fit Has the group agreed how the option works with the specific 2014, 2024, or mixed rules being used?
Table approval Has the DM approved this option and any interactions that need a ruling?

This method makes the choice personal and rules-aware without pretending the short public descriptions provide a mechanical ranking. A feature that sounds exciting in isolation may be less useful if it rarely comes up in the campaign, while a modest-sounding trait may suit the scenes your group plays most. If two options both fit, compare the play experience you want rather than trying to find a universally strongest species.

Choose a class or subclass to support the concept

The book’s new class is the Gadgeteer, described by the publisher as building weapons, armor, and mechanical pets. That makes it a natural concept prompt for a character whose story centers on making or using crafted equipment. The short public description does not explain how the class works, what its progression is, or how its creations function. Read its full rules before deciding whether it fits your preferred play style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The campaign page names three Gadgeteer subclasses—Cultivator, Engineer, and Fizzar—and also names three subclasses for existing classes: Wrangler Monk, Deep Roots Sorcerer, and Oath of Mysteries Paladin. Those names suggest possible themes, but they are not sufficient to establish features or play patterns. Use them to locate options in the book, then choose based on their actual rules.

Option named by the publisher How to use the name responsibly
Gadgeteer Consider it if the character concept involves constructed gear or mechanical pets; read the class rules to learn its actual play loop.
Cultivator, Engineer, Fizzar These are named Gadgeteer subclasses. Compare their printed features rather than guessing their roles from their names.
Wrangler Monk, Deep Roots Sorcerer, Oath of Mysteries Paladin These are named subclasses for existing classes. Confirm the class prerequisites and rules in the book before choosing one.

To make the decision, identify what you want to do repeatedly during a session—such as support allies, investigate problems, explore, or contribute in combat—and compare that goal with the class and subclass features. Then check whether those features compete for the same action, resource, or opportunity. Flavor can inspire the choice, but the actual feature text determines how it plays.

Also check the campaign’s starting level before choosing a subclass or recording class features. The publisher’s listing describes an adventure for levels 5–8, but your DM decides where the party begins and how advancement works. If the character starts above level 1, consult the class rules for all features gained by that level rather than filling the sheet as if the character had just begun. If the group has not yet decided a starting level, settle that before finalizing the build.

Fit backgrounds, feats, and spells to the campaign

The publisher confirms that Beyond the Canopy includes backgrounds, feats, and spells, but the public description reviewed here does not enumerate them or their rules. Use the book to see what is available and what prerequisites apply; do not assume that a character can select an option just because it appears in the setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Background

Choose a background that explains the character’s life before the adventure and supports the concept you have already chosen. Check the sourcebook and the table’s rules for its benefits and any choices it requires. A compelling story connection is useful, but it does not replace meeting the printed requirements. If your character is joining an established party, ask the DM what kinds of prior experience make sense in the campaign and how the background can connect the character to the starting situation.

Feat

Consider a feat only after confirming that your rules version and character progression allow you to take it. Read its complete prerequisites and effects, then ask whether it adds something the character will use or strengthens an existing part of the concept. Do not plan a feat into the build until you know when the table’s rules allow it and that the character meets every requirement.

Spell

If the character can use spells, verify that a new spell is available to that character under the book’s rules and the table’s rules version. Check its full description, including any casting requirements or limitations, before relying on it as a core part of the build. A spell’s title or theme does not show who can learn it or when it can be used; confirm those details in the entry and the character’s class rules.

Complete the character sheet from the rules, not the flavor summary

Once the DM has approved the options, use the sourcebook and your table’s chosen core rules to complete the sheet. The publisher’s resources page lists a free 5e Humblewood character-sheet PDF. A sheet is a recording tool, not a substitute for the rules text: copy the relevant features accurately and keep any limits or usage notes visible.

Work through the choices in order rather than trying to solve the entire build at once. First confirm the campaign rules and starting level; then select an approved species and any eligible subrace; then apply the chosen character-creation rules and class. This order helps catch a prerequisite or compatibility question before it affects several later choices. Keep the book available while transcribing features, since a short reminder on a character sheet may omit a condition or limit from the complete rule.

  1. Record the approved species and subrace. Use the exact names and write down their printed traits without adding inferred abilities.
  2. Apply the table’s character-creation rules. Follow the chosen 2014, 2024, or agreed mixed rules for ability scores, proficiencies, equipment, and other choices; confirm any point the setting book handles differently.
  3. Add class and subclass features. Record the features available at the character’s starting level and note action costs, resources, and restrictions.
  4. Enter background, feat, and spell choices. Check each prerequisite and the rule that grants access to it.
  5. Review the sheet with the DM. Resolve unclear wording or interactions before the first session, especially where the group is adapting an option for a different rules version.

Do you need the original Humblewood book?

No—not to begin the sequel adventure. The publisher describes Beyond the Canopy as tied to the original campaign setting but fully enjoyable without having played that adventure first. Its product listing presents the sequel with its own level 5–8 adventure and player options. If your group is starting at the sequel, use the character-creation guidance in the book and ask the DM what starting level and campaign-specific choices apply.

Standalone does not mean that every book has identical character options. The original setting book and the sequel are distinct sources of character options. D&D Beyond’s 2024 overview of the original Humblewood Campaign Setting describes ten species divided between birdfolk and humblefolk, with fixed ability score increases for those original options. Those details do not establish the sequel’s roster or traits; do not carry them over unless the sequel’s rules say to do so.

Digital character-builder availability

The reviewed marketplace listing establishes digital character-builder integration for the original Humblewood setting, not for Beyond the Canopy. It therefore does not confirm that the sequel’s species, Gadgeteer, or other options are selectable in a particular character builder. Check the current listing for the sequel and your platform before planning to build the character there. If an option is unavailable digitally, follow the DM’s preference for recording it on a paper or editable sheet; the publisher lists a free Humblewood 5e sheet PDF.

Do not treat the original setting’s digital integration as proof that sequel content is included, and do not assume that a character builder supports a rules version merely because the book discusses compatibility with it. Verify both the specific product and the relevant rules version in the platform’s current listing. If you use a digital sheet, keep the sourcebook available for any option that must be entered manually or checked during play.

Cost and what to buy

The direct product for these species and player options is Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy, because it is the book that contains them. The publisher’s listing describes a digital PDF of more than 250 pages, but the material summarized here does not establish a current price, physical edition price, or retailer availability. Check the publisher’s current product page for the format and price before purchasing.

A 2024 Player’s Handbook may be relevant if your table requires that core rulebook, but it does not replace the setting book that contains the sequel’s options. Conversely, the sequel book’s public product listing specifically names 2014 compatibility, so owning core 2024 rules alone does not settle how the group will use its content. Confirm the table’s rules and book requirements before buying anything. A physical character sheet is optional: the publisher lists a free 5e Humblewood character-sheet PDF.

A final pre-session check

  • Confirm the campaign’s rules version and whether the DM permits the sequel’s player options.
  • Ask the starting level, since the listed adventure covers levels 5–8, and apply only the features the character has at that level.
  • Use the book to verify the species roster, subrace eligibility, and every mechanical trait.
  • Choose class, subclass, background, feat, and spell options from their complete rules, not their names or flavor descriptions alone.
  • Make sure the character’s concept and selected features suit the campaign the DM is running.
  • Resolve unclear interactions before play and record the agreed ruling on the sheet.
  • Check current platform availability if you intend to use a digital character builder; integration for the original book does not establish sequel support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What species can I play in Humblewood: Beyond the Canopy?

Hit Point Press says the book adds six playable animal races and two subraces. Its public campaign overview names Rockburrow Jerbeen, Seetas, and Tilias, but it does not give the complete roster or full traits. Use the book to confirm every option and its rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Beyond the Canopy with 2024 D&D rules?

The publisher’s campaign page describes the player content as compatible with 2014 and 2024, while its current digital product listing specifically says compatible with 2014 5e. Ask your DM which rules version the group will use and how any unclear interactions will be handled.

Do I need the original Humblewood book or adventure first?

No. The publisher says Beyond the Canopy is tied to the original setting but can be enjoyed without first playing the original adventure. Confirm with your DM which books and character options the campaign will use.

What are the new Humblewood races?

The publisher confirms six new playable animal races and two subraces. Its public overview gives only three examples—Rockburrow Jerbeen, Seetas, and Tilias—so consult the sourcebook for the complete roster and the distinction between races and subraces.

Is Beyond the Canopy available in the D&D Beyond character builder?

A reviewed D&D Beyond listing establishes builder integration for the original Humblewood setting, not for Beyond the Canopy. Check the current marketplace listing for the sequel and your platform. The publisher also lists a free 5e Humblewood character-sheet PDF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What class options are in Beyond the Canopy?

The publisher names a new Gadgeteer class, with Cultivator, Engineer, and Fizzar subclasses, and also names Wrangler Monk, Deep Roots Sorcerer, and Oath of Mysteries Paladin. Those names are not complete mechanics; check the book for features, prerequisites, and progression.

The Bottom Line

Build from the character concept, but make rules decisions from the book: confirm your table’s 2014 or 2024 approach, get DM approval, and verify the species, subrace, and features in full. Beyond the Canopy adds six playable races, two subraces, a Gadgeteer, subclasses, backgrounds, feats, and spells, and its adventure does not require playing the original campaign first. The public overview is not a complete species guide, so let the sourcebook—not animal flavor or assumptions about the original setting—settle the mechanics.
