A used PS5 game is safest to buy when you confirm it is a physical disc, check that your exact PS5 model can read it, assess the seller and the disc’s condition, and understand the return terms before paying. A disc is not the same as a digital code or access to someone else’s account: do not buy a seller’s account or share your PlayStation sign-in details.
Start by identifying what the listing actually sells
“Used PS5 game” should mean a pre-owned physical game disc. Listings can also offer a digital code, an account with a game in its library, or access to a shared library. Those are different products with different requirements and risks. Read the title, description, photos, and included-items list carefully; if anything is unclear, ask the seller to confirm in writing before you pay.

Sony’s account-security guidance warns against sharing account details. Its US Terms of Service describe Store content as a personal, non-commercial license, and warn that closing an account may result in losing access to purchased content. A digital purchase is therefore not the same thing as a transferable used disc.
Pause if the seller’s wording is vague. A listing that says “account included,” “offline access,” or “shared library” is not offering the same thing as a game disc, even if it uses the game’s title and box art. Ask directly: “Will I receive the physical game disc, or is this access through an account or code?” Keep the answer with the listing and do not proceed if the seller will not explain what is being transferred.

Be especially careful with requests for your PlayStation sign-in, password, one-time security code, or a sign-in link. Sony warns that account sharing compromises security and violates its Terms of Service. A stranger who can access your account may change sign-in information and lock you out. There is no need to give a seller your credentials to receive or play a physical game disc.
Check drive compatibility before buying
A physical disc is useful only if the console can read it. Confirm the exact PS5 model and its disc-drive setup rather than relying on a listing that simply says “PS5 compatible.” Sony’s support instructions specifically say that PS4 game discs require a PS5 console with a disc drive, cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition, and must be inserted each time the game is played. That guidance is about PS4 discs on PS5; do not assume it establishes compatibility for every hardware revision, drive arrangement, or title. Check the support information for your exact console and game.
- Have a PS5 with a working disc drive? Check that the title and console model are supported and that the drive reads discs.
- Have a Digital Edition? Do not buy a physical disc on the assumption that it will work. Confirm whether your exact revision supports an appropriate drive setup, if applicable, before purchasing.
- Buying a console and game together? Verify the console model and drive functionality independently; a game disc included in a bundle does not prove the console can read it.
For a comparison between two listings, evaluate the exact title and edition, physical-disc status, condition and evidence of function, seller reputation, written return terms, and total cost after shipping or fees. If a console is part of the purchase, add its exact model and disc-drive compatibility to that comparison.
Do the compatibility check before arranging payment, not after a disc arrives. First identify the console model you own or plan to buy. Then check whether that particular console has a disc drive and whether the game’s format is supported. A seller’s general statement that a game “works on PS5” does not answer whether your Digital Edition can use a disc, nor does it confirm the condition of the specific copy being sold.
For a listing that combines a console and game, treat the two items as separate decisions. Establish which console revision is included and whether its drive is present and working; then establish that the game is the physical disc and the edition you want. Ask the seller to identify the model in writing and show the drive working if possible. If you cannot verify these points, account for that uncertainty before paying rather than assuming the bundle will work as pictured.
Vet the seller and terms before sending payment
Sony advises buyers of used PlayStation products to check seller ratings and reputation. - Review the seller’s history. Check ratings and feedback on the marketplace where the listing appears, and read recent comments rather than relying only on a headline score.
- Get specifics about the item. Ask whether the listing is for the physical disc, which edition it is, what condition the disc is in, and what is included. Keep the response in the marketplace’s written message system.
- Ask for relevant proof. For a game disc, ask for clear photos and, where practical, a short video showing the disc and the game launching on a compatible console. A seller video can help, but it cannot guarantee that the disc will work in your console or establish the seller’s return obligations.
- Read the return terms before checkout. Check the actual merchant or marketplace policy and the individual seller’s stated terms. Protections and return rules vary by seller, platform, and jurisdiction; there is no universal used-game return policy to rely on.
- Compare the total price. Include shipping and any fees, not just the listed price. A lower price is not automatically better if the item description, seller record, or return terms are less clear.
Be cautious with unusually cheap offers, unexpected direct messages, and promotions that ask you to sign in or provide account information. Sony warns about scam messages impersonating support or offering exclusive opportunities, and advises using trusted QR codes. If either listing includes a console, compare its exact model and drive compatibility too. This gives you a clear checklist without assuming that a cheaper offer is a better value.
Ask for proof that is relevant to the item. For a disc, current photos can help you confirm that the seller has the item and that the correct title is pictured. A short video of the game launching on a compatible console may offer additional evidence, but it is not a substitute for return terms and it does not prove that the disc will work in every drive. If buying a console or bundle, Sony specifically suggests requesting video evidence of the system powering on, connecting to the internet when relevant, and testing ports, buttons, and the disc drive where applicable.
Keep the seller’s condition description and any answer about returns in the marketplace’s message system. Inspect the disc, and treat console checks separately
For a game disc, compare the item you receive with the listing: confirm it is the correct title and edition, look for obvious visible damage, and check that it is the disc rather than a code or an empty case. Ask about unclear marks or damage before buying. Sony’s used-PlayStation guidance includes checking seller reputation and inspecting the item, but some of its specific checks concern hardware, not game discs.

When the console itself is part of the deal, verify that it can access PlayStation services if you need online functionality. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from accessing those services. Also confirm that the seller has deactivated the used console and no longer has access to it. Do not sign in with the previous owner’s account; keep your own credentials private, because someone with account access may change sign-in information and lock the account owner out.
Keep console inspection separate from disc inspection. A game disc does not have ports, buttons, image quality, or a console serial number, so those hardware checks cannot establish that a disc is in good condition. Conversely, a clear-looking disc does not demonstrate that a used console’s drive works. If a bundle is involved, verify the console and the game independently, and keep a record of what the seller said was included.
For an in-person console check, compare the device with the seller’s video and check the functions that matter to your use. Sony’s list includes image quality, signs of overheating, visible damage, broken seals, and removed serial numbers. If online services are important to you, check service access rather than relying on the seller’s assurance. A console reported lost or stolen may be suspended from PlayStation services, so this is a material question to resolve before buying used hardware.

Also ask the seller to confirm that the console has been deactivated and that they no longer have access to it. Do not let a previous owner’s account remain the basis for your access to games or services. Set up and use your own PlayStation account, and protect its sign-in information. Sony’s advice about account access matters even when the console itself appears to work: ownership of a used physical game does not transfer a seller’s account or digital library.
Install and play a compatible disc
On a supported PS5 setup, insert the physical disc and follow the on-screen prompts to install or start the game. Keep in mind that the instructions Sony gives for PS4 discs on PS5 require the disc to be inserted each time the game is played; the disc is not replaced by an account-based entitlement. Sony’s support instructions also say to select the game hub and download any needed update. Available updates and online features can depend on the title and service availability.
- Confirm the title and console support. Check the exact game and PS5 model before purchase, especially if your console is a Digital Edition or uses a particular drive arrangement.
- Insert the disc. Use the console’s disc drive and follow any on-screen installation instructions.
- Install an update if prompted. If the console offers a game update, follow the prompt and allow the download to finish.
- Keep the disc available. For PS4 discs on PS5, Sony says the disc must remain inserted each time you play. Check the title’s support information for other cases.
Buying a used disc does not make a seller’s PlayStation account or digital library part of the purchase. Sony describes Console Sharing and Offline Play as a feature that can let other users on an enabled PS5 play games and media purchased and downloaded by the account owner, including while offline, and access some PlayStation Plus benefits. Think of the physical disc and the account separately throughout setup. The disc is the item you bought; it does not give you the seller’s account, and there is no need to enter another person’s credentials to install or play it. If an offer depends on logging into an account supplied by the seller, it is no longer a straightforward used-disc purchase. Sony warns against account sharing, so avoid making your access dependent on someone else’s sign-in details or library settings.

A failed read does not immediately tell you whether the problem is the game disc or the console. Sony’s basic troubleshooting advice is to wipe dirt or fingerprints from a disc with a soft, clean cloth, then try another compatible disc to help determine where the fault lies.
- Check and clean gently. If you see dirt or fingerprints, wipe the disc with a soft, clean cloth. Cleaning may remove dirt or fingerprints; it is not a repair for deep scratches or physical damage.
- Try another compatible disc. If another disc reads, the problem may be specific to the used game disc. If multiple compatible discs fail, the console or drive may need troubleshooting.
- Follow Sony’s PS5 disc troubleshooting steps. If the issue continues, use Sony’s support instructions for the console rather than assuming the disc is recoverable.
Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. A disc that is not a supported game or media format should not be treated as evidence that the console drive is faulty.
Use the other-disc test to narrow down what may be wrong, not to make a definitive diagnosis. If the used game will not read but another compatible disc does, the fault may follow the game disc. If several compatible discs fail, the issue may be with the console or drive. In either case, follow Sony’s PS5 disc troubleshooting instructions. Cleaning is a basic step for dirt or fingerprints; it cannot be relied on to fix scratches or other physical damage.
What the January 2028 disc-production announcement means
On July 1, 2026, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote on PlayStation.Blog: “Physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony’s announcement says this change does not affect games that already released, or that will release before January 2028, in disc format.

The announcement is about production of new physical releases beginning in the future. It does not establish how many used copies will be available, what they will cost, or whether a particular existing disc will be easy to find. For a used-game buyer, the practical decision remains item-specific: verify that the disc is the title and edition you want and that your console can use it.
In other words, the announced date is not a reason to assume that every used game will become scarce or that prices will rise. Sony’s statement addresses production of new physical releases starting in January 2028 and says it does not affect games released, or due to be released before then, in disc format. It does not promise a particular supply, resale price, or availability for second-hand copies. Make the purchase based on the actual listing, compatibility, condition, seller, return terms, and total price.
