Choose whether your build will focus on a recognizable original PlayStation console, a game-inspired scene, or a console paired with a removable scene; then sketch the footprint and silhouette before selecting pieces. LEGO’s official PlayStation set 72306 is a useful scale and design reference, but it is not a custom parts list or a tested recipe for your own build.
Choose the kind of diorama you want to build
A diorama needs a clear focal point. If the console, game scene, and controller all compete for attention, the display can become visually busy before it becomes recognizable. Decide which element should read first from across the room, then make the others support it.

| Approach | What leads the display | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Console replica | The original PlayStation’s low, rounded console silhouette | Proportions, visible lid, front face, and enough room for a controller |
| Game-inspired scene | A compact scene that evokes a game such as Ape Escape or Gran Turismo | A recognizable setting or activity, with the console optional or secondary |
| Console with removable scene | The console and a separate game vignette | How the scene attaches, where it stores, and whether removing it leaves a finished display |
The official set provides an example of the third approach: it models the original console and controller alongside two game dioramas referencing Ape Escape and Gran Turismo, which can be displayed separately. That is a design reference, not evidence that a custom removable section will be stable or fit the same way.
Pick one focal idea
Write down the one thing a viewer should identify first: “original PlayStation,” “a racing scene,” or “the console with a detachable game scene,” for example. Then list the supporting elements that actually reinforce that idea. A controller helps establish scale and identity; a small unrelated prop may not.

If you want the console to be the focal point, use scene details sparingly. If the game scene should lead, keep the console smaller or place it behind the action. For a removable scene, decide whether it will sit beside the console or attach to a top or side area before you design either section. That choice affects the footprint and support points.
Set the scale and shelf footprint first
The LEGO Group’s 2026 product listing gives set 72306’s console model dimensions as approximately 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Use those measurements as a reference for the licensed model’s display footprint, not as a requirement for a custom build. A smaller version can be easier to place and may leave room for a larger scene; a larger version gives you more space to express the curved shape and front details.
Measure the shelf or cabinet where the finished model will live. Reserve space for the display itself, any controller or scene placed beside it, and the room needed to lift off a removable section. Measure the available height as well as the surface: an open lid, tall scenery, or a controller set upright can exceed the console’s own height.

If you want a proportional starting point, scale the three reference dimensions together. At half the listed dimensions, the console would be approximately 3 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep. These are arithmetic estimates based on LEGO’s published dimensions, not dimensions for a tested half-scale model; brick geometry may make exact proportions impractical. Treat them as a sketching aid and adjust the design to the pieces and connections you choose.
Before building, draw a top-down rectangle for the planned footprint and a side view for the silhouette. Mark where the console, controller, and scene will sit. Include any overhangs in the outline rather than measuring only the central body. A removable element should have a designated resting place when it is not attached.

Sketch the silhouette before adding details
The original PlayStation’s rounded body is one of its most recognizable features. LEGO’s official design feature describes the rounded form and opening lid as design challenges. That makes the outer profile a better first priority than tiny ports or decorations: a boxy build with accurate buttons may still fail to read as the console, while a strong low profile and rounded corners can communicate the idea before the details are visible.
Plan the major forms
- Top view: mark the body outline, lid area, and the position of any controller or scene.
- Front view: establish the console’s low height and where the front face and controls will appear.
- Side view: check the depth and how the top transitions into the body.
- Section or layer sketch: note where the body needs internal support and where a lid or removable part would separate.
These sketches are planning tools, not a claim that one specific geometry or building technique will work for every parts collection. The important test at this stage is whether the major shape still looks like the intended object when the small details are left out.

Keep moving parts separate from the main structure
If your design includes an opening lid, a detachable scene, or another moving element, treat it as its own engineering problem. Decide where it will pivot or rest, what supports it, and whether it can move without pulling apart the surrounding body. The official set’s functional Open and Power buttons and its controller connection demonstrate features of that licensed model; they do not guarantee that a custom mechanism will function at a different scale or with different pieces.
For a first custom build, a fixed lid or a scene that lifts off as a complete unit may be simpler than a working hinge. Choose a mechanism only if it adds something important to the display and you can accommodate its support and clearance in the initial sketch.
Build the base and structure before the scene
A stable base gives the console and scenery a dependable footprint. Begin with the outline you drew, then plan how the base connects to the body and any overhanging or removable parts. A wide display can look balanced on paper but become awkward to lift if the base flexes or the upper section is supported at only one point.

- Lay out the footprint. Place the base pieces within the sketched boundary and check that the console body and scene have room without crowding one another.
- Connect the base into a unit. Arrange connections so the display is not just a thin surface carrying separate, loosely joined sections. Consider where a person will grip it when moving the model.
- Build the main body in layers. Add the console’s broad lower form and upper surface before adding delicate surface details. Keep the shape aligned to the footprint.
- Check overhangs and support. Look underneath any section that extends beyond the base. If it can flex or pull away when moved, revise its support before adding decorative elements.
- Test removable sections separately. Lift and replace the section gently during assembly. Check that it locates consistently and does not rely on nearby small details to hold it in place.
This sequence is general design guidance, not a verified build method for set 72306 or a tested custom model. The necessary construction will depend on the parts, scale, and connections in your own design.
Add the console details in descending order of importance
Once the body has the right overall shape, add details from large and defining to small and decorative. This keeps the model legible and gives you a chance to revise proportions before the most intricate work is attached.
- Refine the rounded outline. Check the top and side profiles from several viewing angles. If the console still looks too rectangular, adjust the broad outline before adding controls.
- Establish the lid. Make its position and boundary clear on the top surface. If it is meant to open, reserve room for its movement and support before completing the surrounding surface.
- Shape the front face. Place the power and open controls where they can be seen. Keep the face visually distinct from the top and sides.
- Add ports and smaller marks. Include these after the main forms read clearly. Small details can disappear at a distance, so use them to reward a closer look rather than to carry the identity of the build.
- Make the controller recognizable. Treat it as a separate object with its own shape and display position. If it plugs into or attaches to the console in your design, plan the connection without making the controller carry the weight of another section.
The LEGO Group’s design feature notes that translating the original console’s rounded form into bricks required attention. A designer identified there only as “Frédéric” is quoted saying, “The design of the console translated quite well into LEGO® bricks.” The statement is about the official design process, not a guarantee that any particular custom shape or technique will work.
Design the game scene around a readable moment
A small game-inspired scene does not need to reproduce an entire level. Choose one moment, activity, or setting that can be recognized in the space you have allotted. The official PlayStation model uses Ape Escape and Gran Turismo as scene references; you can use those as inspiration or choose another PlayStation-era idea that suits your display.
For a racing vignette
Make the vehicle or track the visual anchor. A short stretch of track, a start line, or a single turn can suggest racing without taking over the console. Keep the direction of movement clear, and avoid placing the most important vehicle detail behind the console body if the display will usually be viewed from the front.

For an action or adventure vignette
Choose a small interaction rather than a collection of disconnected props. A character facing an object or moving through a defined setting gives the scene a readable action. Keep the backdrop or ground plane simple enough that it does not compete with the console if both are meant to share attention.
For either kind of scene
- Decide which side will face the viewer and orient the action toward it.
- Use the available depth intentionally; a shallow scene can still work if its key forms are visible from the front.
- Keep loose or protruding details clear of the console and any removable connection.
- Check the scene in place before adding more props. If its central idea is not apparent, improve the large forms rather than adding unrelated decoration.
Choose fixed or removable construction deliberately
A fixed scene is simpler to arrange as one display, while a removable scene offers more flexibility and can be shown separately. The official 72306 design demonstrates separate display options for its game dioramas, but those features belong to that product. A custom version needs its own attachment plan and should be checked for stability.
| Design choice | Useful when | Plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed scene | You want one composed display and do not need to rearrange it | A joined base and enough support for the entire scene during moving |
| Removable scene | You want to display the console alone or reposition the vignette | A repeatable fit, a stable resting position, and a place to set the scene when detached |
For a removable design, build the attachment into the sketch and base rather than trying to add it after the console and scenery are finished. Check that removal does not expose unfinished areas that are supposed to be visible in console-only mode. If the scene is attached above the console, consider whether its weight or handling could stress the top surface.
Make a parts list only after the design settles
The cited official LEGO sources provide the set’s piece count and product dimensions, but they do not provide a parts inventory for a custom PlayStation diorama, exact quantities for a custom design, or a verified custom-build budget. The 1,911-piece count belongs to set 72306; it should not be used as a target or estimate for a different model.
Once your footprint, silhouette, and scene are settled, turn the sketch into a parts list. Record the elements needed for the base, large body forms, surface details, and any separate scene. Keep color and quantity decisions tied to what the design actually requires. If you are sourcing pieces, use your final inventory to check availability; do not order around a speculative count before the model’s shape is decided.

Keep the inventory practical
- Separate structural pieces from decorative details so you can prioritize the elements the model needs to stand.
- Identify any unusual shape or color that is essential to the silhouette before committing to a design that depends on it.
- For a moving or removable section, list the parts needed for both the connection and its support.
- Revise the design if a key element is unavailable or would require an impractical sourcing effort; the reference dimensions are not a requirement.
Review the finished display before calling it done
Inspect the model from the angle where it will normally be seen, then check it from the sides and above. A detail that is clear in hand may be hidden once the console and scene are positioned together. The goal is not to maximize the number of small features; it is to make the intended object and scene read clearly as a display.
- Identity: Can you recognize the console or the chosen game scene without relying on a caption?
- Proportion: Does the console remain low and broad rather than reading as a generic box?
- Stability: Does the base stay together when the model is moved carefully, and are overhangs supported?
- Display fit: Does the complete arrangement fit the shelf, including the controller and detached scene if relevant?
- Removable parts: Does each section lift off and return to its intended position without catching on small details?
- Visual priority: Do the buttons, controller, and scene support the focal idea instead of obscuring it?
If the model feels crowded, remove secondary props before shrinking the main forms. If the console is hard to identify, revisit its silhouette and lid before adding more ports or buttons. If a section shifts during careful handling, address the connection and support rather than relying on decoration to conceal the problem.
How the official LEGO PlayStation set fits into a custom project
LEGO set 72306 is a licensed, ready-made reference: the LEGO Group’s 2026 US product listing describes a 1,911-piece display model with the original console and controller and gives console dimensions of approximately 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. The September 3, 2026 announcement from LEGO and PlayStation describes functional Open and Power buttons, a controller that plugs into the console, and Ape Escape and Gran Turismo dioramas. Those details can help you decide what to emphasize in your own design, but the official set is not a substitute for a custom inventory or an independently verified custom-building plan.
