Your activity can include searches, product and content views, cart changes, orders, and purchase or content-use history—not just items you bought. Amazon does not disclose the formula or the weight given to any particular action, so a recommendation is evidence of personalization, not proof of exactly what caused it.
What Amazon says it uses shopping history for
Amazon’s Privacy Notice describes personalization as one purpose for using personal information: recommending features, products, and services that might interest you, identifying preferences, and personalizing your experience with Amazon Services. In other words, recommendations are intended to make the store more relevant to a shopper, rather than simply display the same products to everyone.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The notice lists a broad range of activity that may be collected. It includes searches, items added to or removed from a cart, orders, product and content views, and purchase or content-use history. That breadth matters: a recommendation can relate to something you looked at or searched for even if you never bought it.
Amazon’s stated purpose and its list of collected activity support the conclusion that shopping history can inform recommendations. They do not reveal which individual events were used to generate a specific recommendation, how strongly each event counted, or whether another factor also contributed.

This is why “shopping history” should be understood broadly here. It is not limited to a list of completed purchases. A search, a viewed product page, a cart addition, and a cart removal are different kinds of activity, and Amazon identifies each among the information it collects. The notice supports saying these activities may be relevant to personalization; it does not say that every recorded action will necessarily change what you see.
Why a search, view, or cart change might affect what you see
Shopping activity can indicate interest in different ways. A search expresses what you are looking for; viewing a product or piece of content shows that it caught your attention; adding or removing an item from a cart records a change in what you are considering; and an order records a purchase. Amazon’s Privacy Notice identifies these kinds of activity as information it collects and says it uses personal information for recommendations and personalization.
For a video-game shopper, that could mean that searches or views involving a game, accessory, or other gaming product may be relevant to later store recommendations. This is an illustration of how Amazon’s stated categories could apply to gaming shopping—not confirmation that any one search or view caused a particular item to appear. The same caution applies if a recommendation resembles something you previously bought: the notice does not say that purchases are the only input.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is also possible to read too much into a recommendation. Seeing a product does not establish that Amazon knows you intend to buy it, and a recommendation alone cannot show whether it came from one particular action or a combination of information. Amazon does not publish the exact formula used for recommendations shown to an individual shopper.
A cart change illustrates why the distinction matters. Adding an item can reflect consideration, while removing it can mean you changed your mind or no longer want it. Amazon lists both additions and removals as activity it collects, but the notice does not explain how either event is interpreted, whether one outweighs the other, or whether the result differs by product or context. It is reasonable to say the activity is within the broad set of information that may inform personalization; it would go beyond the disclosure to assign it a definite meaning or effect.
Likewise, a recommendation that appears after a single search does not prove that the search was its sole cause. The public notice describes a purpose and categories of information, not a user-facing explanation attached to each recommendation. Without that explanation, shoppers cannot reliably distinguish the influence of one event from other activity or information that may also have contributed.

What Amazon does—and does not—disclose about the recommendation logic
What the consumer notice establishes
Amazon’s Privacy Notice establishes two relevant points: Amazon says it uses personal information to recommend products and personalize its services, and it identifies shopping and browsing activity among the information it collects. It does not set out a consumer-facing scoring formula, list the relative importance of signals, or tell shoppers how long a given activity may influence recommendations.
That means there is no supported way to say that a purchase counts more than a product view, that a cart action outweighs a search, or that a recommendation will disappear after a particular period. Those details are not disclosed in the notice. Treat claims about a precise weight, timeline, or guaranteed cause as unverified unless Amazon states them for the feature in question.
The notice also does not describe a universal switch that promises to turn off every form of personalization. Instead, it points customers to specific controls for recommendations and browsing history, as well as the narrower option of browsing signed out with cookies blocked. Those controls have different purposes, so choosing one depends on whether the concern is a particular item, recorded browsing entries, or account linkage while browsing.
Why AWS documentation is not a map of the Amazon store
Amazon also offers Amazon Personalize, a separate AWS service for developers building recommendation systems. Its technical documentation describes systems that can use interaction data and item metadata. Depending on the recipe and use case, a system can use real-time events or rely on updates tied to training and that recipe’s behavior.
This is useful context for understanding that recommendation technology can be built from interactions and information about items. It is not evidence that Amazon.com’s consumer storefront uses a particular Amazon Personalize recipe, score, event-processing setup, or update schedule. The developer service and the store recommendations are different subjects; the AWS documentation does not disclose the store’s exact implementation.

AWS documentation explains capabilities for specified Personalize recipes and use cases. It does not establish whether, or how quickly, Amazon.com’s consumer recommendations react to an individual search, view, cart change, or purchase.

Store recommendations are not the same as advertising
A product recommendation inside Amazon’s shopping experience should not automatically be treated as an ad targeted from the same specific shopping action. Amazon’s Privacy Notice distinguishes its handling of shopping activity from advertising: it says Amazon does not share specific actions such as purchases, product views, or searches with ad companies, while it may share advertising identifiers and estimates of ad value.
This distinction does not mean advertising and store personalization are identical, nor does it establish that they never overlap in any way. It means the notice describes different data handling for the two contexts. A recommendation in the store is covered by Amazon’s stated personalization purpose; the notice’s advertising description should not be used to infer that a particular store recommendation was an advertisement, or vice versa.
So if a shopper is trying to understand why a product appeared, it helps to separate two questions: whether Amazon uses personal information to personalize its own services, and what information it says it shares with advertising companies. The notice provides a purpose-level answer to the first and a separate description of ad-related data handling. Neither statement identifies the exact cause of a specific product placement.
How to change recommendations tied to an item
If one item seems to be steering recommendations in an unwanted direction, Amazon’s Privacy Notice points to the Improve Your Recommendations control. For an individual item, turn off the Use this item for recommendations toggle on that item. This is the targeted option described by Amazon for limiting the recommendation use of a particular item.
- Open Amazon’s Improve Your Recommendations controls.
- Find the item you do not want used for recommendations.
- Switch off Use this item for recommendations for that item.
This approach is useful when the concern is specific—for example, a gift purchase or a product that no longer reflects your interests. The item-level setting lets you address that item rather than changing how you browse the site generally. Amazon’s notice does not explain the exact effect on every related product or category, however, so do not assume that one toggle removes all recommendations resembling the item.
This control addresses the selected item. The notice does not promise that changing it will remove every related recommendation, erase the item from every record, or affect information about other activity. If your goal is to edit the recorded browsing history itself, use the separate history control.

How to edit your Amazon browsing history
Amazon separately identifies Your Browsing History as a place customers can edit browsing history. Use this when you want to address items in the history record rather than only switch off the recommendation setting for a specific item.
- Open Your Browsing History.
- Edit the history entries you want to remove or change using the controls shown there.
The Privacy Notice says browsing history can be edited, but it does not specify in the notice how each edit changes every future recommendation or how quickly a change takes effect. Avoid assuming that editing history is the same as deleting all personal information associated with an item or account.
The distinction between these two controls is practical: Improve Your Recommendations is described as a way to manage recommendation inputs for an item, while Your Browsing History is where customers can edit history entries. If you want to address both what is recorded in browsing history and whether a particular item is used for recommendations, the notice presents them as separate controls rather than one combined action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Browsing without linking activity to your account
Amazon says you can sign out and block cookies to browse its websites without linking browsing history to your account. This is a narrower claim than a promise to prevent all personalization or tracking across devices and services. It concerns linking browsing history on Amazon’s websites to the signed-in account.
There is a practical trade-off. Amazon says cookies and identifiers support essential store features; rejecting cookies can interfere with using the cart, checkout, or services that require sign-in. If you need those functions, cookie blocking may create friction or prevent the task altogether. Signing out and blocking cookies is therefore a broader browsing choice than changing recommendations for one item, and it comes with more functional consequences.
This option is most relevant when your goal is to browse without associating that browsing history with your account, rather than to make a targeted adjustment to recommendations while signed in. It is not a guarantee that no information is collected, that activity cannot be linked in any other way, or that personalization is stopped across all Amazon services and devices. The notice’s claim is specifically about browsing Amazon websites without linking browsing history to the account.

Which control should you use?
- One item is influencing recommendations: use Improve Your Recommendations and turn off Use this item for recommendations for that item.
- You want to edit recorded browsing entries: use Your Browsing History.
- You want to browse without linking activity to your signed-in account: sign out and block cookies, understanding that cart, checkout, and sign-in-dependent features may be affected.
These options address different scopes. The item-level toggle is targeted; browsing-history editing concerns recorded history; signing out and blocking cookies changes the conditions under which you browse and can affect site functionality. Amazon’s notice does not say these actions erase all information Amazon may hold or prevent every form of personalization.
A useful way to choose is to start with the narrowest goal. If a particular item is the issue, use its recommendation toggle. If you want to change entries in the browsing record, edit Your Browsing History. If you want to browse signed out without linking browsing history to your account, use the sign-out and cookie option and weigh its effect on cart, checkout, and sign-in features. None of these choices should be treated as a universal deletion or opt-out unless Amazon says so for that control.

No. Amazon’s Privacy Notice lists searches, product and content views, items added to or removed from a cart, orders, and purchase or content-use history among information it collects. Does signing out stop Amazon from collecting or using all browsing information?
Amazon says signing out and blocking cookies lets someone browse its websites without linking browsing history to the account.
