Fill all six party slots with purpose: you choose up to three as battle members, while the others can still support eligible allies with their Z Abilities. Then adjust the lineup for the specific Story battle—rarity alone is not a team-building strategy, and no single roster is established as best for every PvE encounter.
Start with the characters you own
Before choosing a lineup, check the Tags and Episodes on the characters in your roster. A practical starting point is to identify a Tag or Episode shared by several candidates, then look for Z Abilities that boost those same categories. The official party-formation FAQ recommends building around Z Abilities and using the Party Formation filters to find characters by Tag or Episode.
- Open a character’s details and note its Tags and Episode.
- In Party Formation, use the filters to find other characters that share a useful Tag or Episode.
- Check the Z Abilities of potential party members. Prefer a party where the abilities benefit the characters you expect to take into battle.
- Compare candidate lineups against the Story battle you are attempting, rather than assuming one setup fits every stage.
There is no supported universal threshold for how many shared buffs make a team “good.” Compare lineups by how well their Z Abilities cover the intended battle members, whether the characters are trained and usable at your current progression, and whether the lineup suits the encounter.
Make all six party slots count
A party has six characters, and you select up to three of them to fight in a battle. The remaining party members are not automatically wasted slots: their Z Abilities can still benefit eligible allies. The official battle guide explains the battle-member selection, and producer TOSHI likewise notes that the three who do not fight still contribute through the party setup. Use the first three slots for the characters you expect to bring into battle, then select the other three with their support value in mind. A character who is not your chosen fighter may still earn a place if its Z Ability strengthens the Tags or Episodes represented by your battle members.
Why rarity is not enough
Rarity can indicate a character’s strength, but it does not by itself make a party effective. Bandai Namco’s rarity FAQ says formation, strategy, and training also matter, and recommends trying different formations in Story modes and events. A high-rarity character whose Z Ability does little for the rest of your party may be a less coherent choice than a character who strengthens the team’s shared categories.

Adjust the team for Story and events
Dragon Ball Legends distinguishes Main Story from Event Stories on its official mode page. Treat shared Tag or Episode synergy as a baseline, not a guarantee that the same three fighters will suit every encounter. Check the battle’s stated conditions and choose from the characters you have trained and available.
- If a battle is going poorly: revisit the three characters you select for battle and check whether your party’s Z Abilities actually benefit them.
- If the party has few matching buffs: use Party Formation filters to look for alternatives sharing a Tag or Episode with the intended fighters.
- If you have a strong character with weak team fit: weigh its individual strength against the support your other candidates provide; rarity alone does not settle the choice.
- If you are moving between Story and an event: reassess the lineup for the new battle instead of assuming the previous formation remains suitable.
What to expect from team recommendations
The official sources describe general party mechanics, but they do not establish a current PvE tier list or a comprehensive recommended roster for every Story stage. They also cannot account for which characters an individual player owns. Avoid treating old PvP rankings or an unverified “best team” list as a dependable answer for your account. For a specific encounter, build from your available characters, check their details and Z Abilities, and test a lineup suited to that battle.
