To build a basic drivable car in Roblox Studio, make a chassis and body from Parts, rigidly connect the fixed pieces with WeldConstraints, add wheels and the appropriate motor joints, then use a VehicleSeat to pass player input to the motors. The key is the connection layout: built-in VehicleSeat control detects motors attached directly to the seat or through rigid connections, so a more complicated joint arrangement may not be detected.
1. Set up a project and keep the build easy to inspect
Open a Studio project or template, then keep Explorer and Properties visible while you work. Build the car in manageable pieces so you can select parts, inspect connections, and change settings without losing track of the assembly. Use Studio’s Play control to test the scene and Stop to return to editing. Roblox’s beginner Studio guidance covers creating and designing with basic parts and entering playtest mode.
2. Build the chassis and body from Parts
Start with a frame or chassis, then add body panels and other visual details using basic Parts. Treat dimensions as a design choice: Roblox does not prescribe a standard car size in the documentation. Group related pieces into a Model to keep the build organized; grouping helps with inspection, but does not by itself make separate parts behave as one rigid assembly.
3. Choose connections by whether a part should move
Use WeldConstraints for fixed pieces
Connect the chassis and body panels that should never move relative to one another with WeldConstraints. A WeldConstraint preserves the connected parts’ relative position and orientation, and the parts do not have to touch. This creates the rigid connection path that is also useful for VehicleSeat motor detection. Roblox’s WeldConstraint documentation explains this behavior.

Use mechanical constraints for moving parts
Wheels and other pivoting parts need a mechanism that allows motion rather than a rigid weld. A HingeConstraint allows rotation around one axis. Mechanical constraints use Attachments as connection points, so position and orientation matter: align corresponding attachment axes to match the motion you intend. Roblox’s constraint documentation describes the constraint types, and its constraints tutorial warns that misaligned attachments can produce incorrect motion.
4. Add a VehicleSeat and check its motor connections
Place a VehicleSeat where the driver should sit. When a player contacts the seat, it seats them and forwards their movement input to detected motor joints. For built-in vehicle control, Roblox documents detection of motors connected directly to the seat or through another rigid connection. A motor connected through a part that reaches the rest of the car by a hinge is outside that documented detection path.

After arranging the seat and motor joints, inspect the seat’s AreHingesDetected property as a debugging clue. If the seat does not control the intended mechanism, check whether the motor joints are connected directly to the seat or by rigid connections, rather than assuming that any connected mechanism will be detected. See the VehicleSeat API reference for the detection behavior and available properties.
5. Tune the controls through playtesting
VehicleSeat exposes MaxSpeed, Torque, and TurnSpeed. Adjust them incrementally and test the car in Studio after each meaningful change. Roblox notes that higher TurnSpeed values can cause problems; increasing it is not automatically an improvement. The documentation does not establish universal settings, so the right values depend on your build and need to be found by testing.

6. Prevent wheel and body collisions when they cause rubbing
If a wheel scrapes against the body, add a NoCollisionConstraint between those two parts. This prevents the specified pair from colliding; it does not disable the wheel’s collision with the ground or other parts of the world. Roblox uses wheel scraping against a car body as an example in its NoCollisionConstraint documentation.

Choose the simplest layout that fits the car
- Fixed body versus moving mechanism: use rigid welds for the chassis and body; use mechanical constraints where rotation or another movement is required.
- Simple control path versus complex joints: the VehicleSeat’s documented motor detection favors motors directly connected to it or connected through rigid connections. A more elaborate mechanism may need a different design, so verify detection rather than assuming it will work.
- Appearance versus behavior: body details shape how the car looks, while constraint placement, motor connections, and playtesting determine whether its parts move and respond as intended.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| The seat does not drive the car | Whether motor joints connect directly to the VehicleSeat or through rigid connections; check AreHingesDetected. |
Correct the connection path so the seat can detect the motors. |
| A wheel or other mechanism moves strangely | Attachment positions and orientations, especially the alignment of corresponding axes. | Reposition or reorient the Attachments for the intended motion. |
| A wheel rubs against the body | Collision between the specific wheel and body parts. | Add a NoCollisionConstraint for that pair while retaining collision with the world. |
| The car turns erratically | The VehicleSeat’s TurnSpeed. |
Reduce or otherwise adjust the value and playtest again; higher values can cause problems. |
