Build a small information architecture around the role you want, publish proof of your skills, make the site usable for keyboard and screen-reader visitors, and keep the content easy for search engines and hiring managers to understand.

Start with the job you want and the evidence it requires
Before installing WordPress or choosing a design, write down the role, industry, and seniority level you are targeting. A hiring manager should be able to tell within seconds what you do, who you help, and where to find proof.
Turn the target role into a content brief
- Target role: use the wording employers use for the position, while keeping the claim accurate.
- Core promise: describe the result you create, not only the tools you know.
- Evidence: identify projects, employment results, credentials, or measurable improvements that support each important skill.
- Call to action: decide whether you want a recruiter to email you, request a conversation, download a CV, or view a particular project.
Do not make visitors infer your specialty from a gallery of screenshots. Put the role and value proposition in the page title and the first visible heading, then use projects and chronology to substantiate it.

Use a compact information architecture
A small site is usually easier to scan, maintain, and keep current. Start with four primary destinations:

The operating model affects how much setup and maintenance you own. WordPress.com provides a managed route and documents a portfolio workflow; self-hosted WordPress requires a hosting account and gives you broader control over files, themes, plugins, and server-level settings.

When the managed route is sensible
Choose WordPress.com when you want a documented portfolio path and prefer to spend your time on writing and presentation rather than server administration. Confirm that the plan you select includes the theme, custom domain, forms, and portfolio features you actually need before committing.
When self-hosting is sensible
Choose self-hosting when you need direct access to theme and plugin files, custom functionality, unusual integrations, or a workflow that is not supported by the hosted dashboard. Treat hosting as an operating responsibility: you need a tested backup, a way to restore the site, and a process for checking updates.
Plan before installation
WordPress’s getting-started documentation recommends planning before installation and setup. Record your domain choice, page map, content owner, update schedule, and backup location first. That short plan prevents a common failure mode: choosing a visual theme and then trying to force your experience into its demo content.

Write the resume and portfolio content before decorating
Home or Profile page
Use one clear headline, followed by a short value proposition. A useful pattern is: “I am a [role] who helps [audience or organization] achieve [specific outcome].” Replace the brackets with your own words; do not make a claim that your projects cannot support.
Place two or three proof points near the introduction. These can be outcomes, a specialization, a credential, or a link to a particularly relevant case study. A skills list without context is weak evidence, so connect each important skill to work you completed.
Resume page
Present employment and education in a consistent chronology. For each position, state the organization, title, dates, scope, and results. Use bullets that explain what changed because of your work rather than repeating a job description. Include certifications only when they remain valid or materially clarify your qualifications.
A downloadable CV is optional. If you provide one, keep the file current, give it a descriptive filename, identify its date, and make the same information available as HTML so visitors are not forced to download a document.
Project case studies
Select projects that match the target role rather than publishing everything. Each project should answer:
- What problem or goal did the work address?
- What was your specific responsibility, and which parts were collaborative?
- What constraints, decisions, or trade-offs shaped the approach?
- What changed afterward—an outcome, improvement, launch, insight, or deliverable?
- What can a reader inspect, such as a live result, process artifact, or appropriately redacted image?
Do not disclose confidential client information. Explain the result honestly when a precise metric is unavailable; “reduced manual handoffs” is better than inventing a percentage.

Offer one obvious route. A plain email address can be more reliable than a complicated form. If you use a form, label every field, state which fields are required, provide a useful error message, and ensure the submission result is announced to assistive technology.
Choose a theme as a functional foundation
A theme controls presentation and parts of site behavior, so it is more than a color scheme. Evaluate the theme against your content, editing workflow, accessibility, and maintenance needs.

Neither model is automatically better for a resume site. Choose the one you can update without breaking headings, navigation, forms, or project content.
Theme selection checklist
- Can you create the four core destinations without relying on demo-only features?
- Does the layout remain readable on a narrow phone screen and at enlarged text sizes?
- Are typography controls sufficient for readable line length, spacing, and heading hierarchy?
- Is there evidence of recent updates and usable support documentation?
- Does the theme identify itself as accessibility-ready? WordPress says this label means the theme passed the Theme Review Team’s basic checks, not that every site built with it is fully compliant.
- Can you remove decorative elements without removing the content or navigation?
- Will your project images, captions, links, and downloadable files remain understandable if styling fails?
Preview the theme with your own headline, a long job title, a multi-paragraph project description, and a contact form. A theme that looks good with short demo text may become unusable with real content.
Build the site in a controlled sequence
- Set the site identity. Configure the site title and description, choose the domain, and confirm the public visibility setting. Use a descriptive title that tells a visitor what the site represents.
- Install or activate the theme. For a block theme, open the Site Editor and establish global typography, colors, header, footer, and navigation. For a classic theme, use its documented settings, but verify the generated headings and links in the page source or accessibility tools.
- Create the core pages. Add Home/Profile, Resume, Projects or Portfolio, and Contact. Keep the page names descriptive; avoid navigation labels such as “Click here.”
- Build the navigation. Put the four core destinations in a consistent order. Keep the current-page state visible and make the menu operable with a keyboard.
- Write the Home/Profile page. Add the role-focused headline, value proposition, selected proof, and a direct call to action before adding decorative sections.
- Publish the Resume page. Use real heading levels, lists for responsibilities, and consistent date formats. Add the optional CV download only after checking that the file opens and matches the HTML version.
- Create projects. On WordPress.com, follow the portfolio workflow: activate portfolios, create projects, choose a suitable portfolio theme, and add the portfolio display. On self-hosted WordPress, use pages, core blocks, or a selected portfolio extension; keep each entry understandable without the extension’s styling.
- Configure Contact. Add the email or form, a descriptive submit button, a success message, and a privacy explanation appropriate to the information you collect.
- Set readable URLs. Use short, human-readable permalinks such as
/resume/and/projects/project-name/. Change a URL only with a plan for updating existing links. - Review every page as a visitor. Log out of the administrator account, use a phone and desktop-sized screen, follow the navigation in order, and test the contact route and CV download.
Add plugins only for a justified requirement
Plugins extend WordPress functionality. Learn WordPress’s plugin guidance covers searching for, installing, and deleting them; use that lifecycle rather than collecting extensions “just in case.”

A resume-builder or portfolio plugin can be useful when you maintain structured entries, multiple resume versions, or a large project catalog. For a small personal site, it may add more maintenance than value. Install one extension at a time, test the site, and remove it completely if the requirement disappears.

Make accessibility a specification, not a final polish
WordPress’s accessibility guidance organizes the work around content that is perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. As the WordPress Theme Handbook puts it: “A WordPress theme should generate pages everyone can use, including those who cannot see or use a mouse.”
Perceivable content
- Use meaningful alternative text for informative images; mark purely decorative images as decorative.
- Do not put essential resume text inside an image or PDF only.
- Maintain sufficient contrast between text, controls, and their backgrounds.
- Use readable type, generous line spacing, and layouts that remain useful when text is enlarged.
Operable controls
- Make every menu, accordion, form control, and dialog usable with a keyboard.
- Keep focus visible and in a logical order.
- Use link text that describes its destination, such as “Read the accessibility audit project,” rather than “Learn more.”
- Avoid motion or autoplay that distracts from the resume content.
Understandable structure
- Use one clear page heading, then nested headings in a logical order.
- Keep navigation labels and button wording consistent across pages.
- Explain required form fields and give specific, recoverable error messages.
- Write dates, job titles, and project outcomes in plain language.
Robust implementation
- Use semantic HTML generated by core blocks or well-maintained components.
- Check the site with a keyboard and a screen reader or browser accessibility inspection tool.
- Test after changing themes or plugins; a previously accessible page can regress when markup changes.
An accessibility-ready theme is a useful starting signal, not a compliance guarantee. Your content, plugin output, color choices, and customizations still determine the visitor’s experience.

WordPress includes SEO-friendly capabilities, but theme customization can weaken crawlability. Keep primary content near the top of the document and make each page understandable without relying on visual effects.
- Write a descriptive site title. State your name and professional focus where appropriate rather than using a vague slogan.
- Give every page a specific title. Distinguish “Resume,” “Projects,” and each project name so browser tabs and search results are useful.
- Use headings as structure. Put the main topic in the page heading and use subheadings for chronology, skills, process, and outcomes.
- Choose readable permalinks. Avoid unexplained IDs, dates that will become stale, and strings that do not describe the page.
- Add text around projects. Search engines and people need context: your role, the problem, the work, and the result.
- Write useful image alt text. Describe the information an image conveys; do not stuff it with repeated job keywords.
- Inspect the mobile result. A heading hidden below a large hero section or a project title rendered only by a script is harder for both visitors and crawlers to discover.
Do not promise a hiring outcome from SEO. No directly relevant published statistic establishes a resume-website success rate or hiring conversion figure, so judge the site by clarity, accessibility, accuracy, and the quality of evidence it presents.
Test before launch
- Content: verify names, dates, role descriptions, project permissions, spelling, and the current CV file.
- Navigation: open every menu item, logo link, project link, email link, and external destination.
- Forms: submit valid and invalid entries, check the success and error messages, and confirm that the intended recipient receives the message.
- Keyboard: tab through the complete site, operate menus and controls, and confirm that focus never disappears.
- Responsive layout: test representative phone, tablet, and desktop widths; look for horizontal scrolling, clipped headings, and overlapping controls.
- Downloads: open the CV on more than one device, check its date and contents, and ensure the link has an understandable name.
- Performance: resize or compress large images, remove unused embeds, and check that project pages remain usable on a slower connection.
- Privacy: confirm that forms and analytics collect only what you intend and that your contact details are displayed deliberately.
Maintain the resume site as part of your career record
WordPress’s documentation treats maintenance, security, publishing, media, themes, and plugins as ongoing operating areas. Set a recurring review rather than waiting until an application deadline.
- Update WordPress, the theme, and plugins through a controlled process.
- Back up both the database and uploaded files, and periodically verify that a restoration is possible.
- Remove abandoned or unnecessary extensions instead of leaving inactive code installed.
- Review the contact route, project links, downloadable CV, and domain renewal information.
- Refresh the headline and selected projects when your target role changes.
- After every major update, repeat keyboard, mobile, form, link, and download checks.
Keep a simple change log with the date, what changed, and whether you tested a backup or restored a page. That record makes it easier to identify a regression and return to a known-good version.

Troubleshoot the problems that most often block a launch
The portfolio does not appear
Confirm that the portfolio feature is activated, that at least one project is published, and that the selected display or portfolio template is assigned to a visible page. If a plugin supplies the portfolio, check that its shortcode, block, or template is still supported by the active theme.
The site looks polished but says little
Replace generic “about me” language with the target role, a specific value proposition, and project evidence. Move the first proof point higher on the Home page and remove decorative sections that push it below the initial view.
The form works for you but not for visitors
Test it while logged out and with a keyboard. Check required-field instructions, error recovery, confirmation messaging, spam controls, and the destination mailbox. Provide a visible email alternative if the form cannot be made reliable.
A theme or plugin update breaks the layout
Restore the latest known-good backup if necessary, identify the changed component, and test updates on a staging copy when your hosting setup supports one. Do not leave an abandoned extension in place simply because reverting is inconvenient; replace the feature with core blocks or a maintained alternative.
The downloadable CV is out of date
Update the HTML Resume page and the file in the same editing session. Add a date to the document and link text, then open the file from the public site to verify that visitors receive the new version.
Launch standard
Publish when a visitor can identify your target role, inspect credible evidence, navigate every core page with a keyboard, contact you without guesswork, and read the same accurate information on a phone and desktop. The most effective resume website is not the one with the most effects or plugins; it is the one that makes your relevant work easy to understand and easy to verify.
