It uses layers: a CDN to absorb cacheable requests, server-level full-page caching for anonymous visitors, persistent object caching for dynamic requests, enough PHP workers for cache misses, a maintained database, and autoscaling or a rapid upgrade path for exceptional demand. Load tests and monitoring tie those layers together before the event begins.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The order matters. Caching the right traffic keeps requests away from the origin; sizing PHP and the database determines whether the requests that must reach WordPress complete before queues form. The following design separates public pages from personalized work and gives you a practical way to find the first bottleneck.

What scalability means for a WordPress site
Scalability is the ability to maintain acceptable response times and successful transactions as demand rises, without treating every visitor as a separate uncached PHP request. A video-games site may be quiet for hours and then receive a burst when a review embargo lifts, a console maker announces a game, a trailer goes viral, or a limited sale begins.
Those visitors do not all create the same load. A cached article requested by thousands of anonymous readers can be delivered at the edge. A logged-in forum page, search result, account screen, cart or checkout request usually needs WordPress, PHP and the database. A scalable design keeps the first category out of the origin as much as possible and reserves origin capacity for the second.

- Cacheable traffic: published articles, category pages, images, style sheets, scripts and other responses that are identical for many visitors.
- Uncacheable or personalized traffic: logged-in pages, account information, carts, checkout, admin screens, forums and filtered results that depend on a visitor or a rapidly changing state.
- Origin work: the requests that still reach the web server, PHP workers, object cache and database after edge and page-cache decisions.
A useful success definition includes more than a fast homepage: pages should remain available, cache purges should not stampede the origin, login and checkout should complete, and the database should recover quickly when the burst ends.
The layered architecture
Use the following stack from the visitor inward. The layers complement one another; replacing one with another usually creates a new bottleneck.
| Layer | Primary job | Traffic it helps most | Typical failure when missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| CDN | Serve cacheable HTML and static assets from edge locations. | Large anonymous bursts and image, script or video-page asset requests. | The origin receives every request and saturates before WordPress can respond. |
| Server-level full-page cache | Return a ready response without starting PHP for each anonymous visit. | Public posts, archives and landing pages. | PHP workers and database connections are consumed by identical page builds. |
| Persistent object cache | Reuse database-backed objects between requests. | Logged-in users, carts, forums, admin activity and filtered queries. | Repeated queries overload the database even when a full-page cache is correctly bypassed. |
| PHP workers | Process requests that cannot be served by a cache. | Logins, writes, uncached pages and transactions. | Requests queue while all workers are busy; timeouts appear before CPU is fully utilized. |
| Database | Store and retrieve content, users, settings and transaction state. | Dynamic requests and writes. | Slow queries, table bloat or lock contention lengthen every uncached request. |
| Autoscaling or rapid resizing | Add capacity for a sustained or exceptional surge. | Demand that exceeds the planned cache-hit and worker capacity. | A fixed instance becomes the hard ceiling even when the workload is healthy. |
Vendor guidance often describes a CDN as the first line of defence and server caching as the next. Treat those descriptions as operational guidance rather than independent benchmarks.
Step 1: Map the spike before buying capacity
List the events that create demand
Write down the exact event and its expected shape: a scheduled review publication, a live announcement, a giveaway, a patch-note post, a sale or a social-media surge. Record when the burst starts, how long it may last, which URLs will be shared, and whether visitors are anonymous or logged in.
Separate page views from origin requests
A headline such as monthly visits is not a capacity plan. One page view may generate an HTML request plus many asset requests; a CDN may serve most of them without contacting the origin. Conversely, a smaller audience can create heavy origin work if every visitor searches, filters, logs in or adds an item to a cart.
Estimate the requests that will actually reach the origin after CDN and page-cache hits. Use a measured test where possible. For a rough capacity check, concurrent PHP work is approximately request rate multiplied by average uncached response time. Rearranging gives an approximate request limit of:
requests per second ≈ PHP workers ÷ average uncached response time in seconds

One vendor guide illustrates the arithmetic with four workers and a 400-millisecond average response: 4 ÷ 0.4 is about 10 requests per second before queuing. That is an illustrative calculation, not a guarantee; slow database calls, bursts shorter than the measurement interval and uneven request times can reduce the real limit.
Define the transactions that must never be cached
Mark login, account, cart, checkout, comment submission, forum posting, search and personalized dashboards as dynamic paths. Decide which query-string filters are safe to cache and which must bypass the page cache. This map becomes the basis for cache rules and load-test scenarios.
Step 2: Put a CDN in front of the site
A CDN can absorb the largest share of a public burst when its cache rules allow it to serve HTML and assets without contacting the origin. One hosting guide uses a 90% CDN-served example: a 100,000-visitor spike would leave roughly 10,000 requests for the origin. The percentage is an illustration, not a measured result for every CDN or WordPress site.
Recommended Free Tools
- Place the CDN in front of the canonical site hostname and verify that DNS and TLS are configured before the event.
- Cache static assets such as images, style sheets, JavaScript and fonts with long-lived, versioned URLs so a new file can be fetched without purging unrelated content.
- Choose deliberately whether public HTML is cached at the edge. Exclude logged-in sessions, administrator paths, carts, checkout and other personalized responses.
- Configure a purge or revalidation path for newly published posts, corrected articles and changed navigation. Test a purge on a staging or low-risk URL first.
- Confirm that the origin is not exposed through an alternate hostname or direct IP that bypasses the CDN during the event.
- Watch cache-hit ratio, origin request rate, edge errors and origin latency during a rehearsal.
Some vendor material claims edge responses in roughly 20–80 milliseconds compared with 300 milliseconds or more from an origin. That range was not independently verified here, so use your own measurements rather than treating it as a service-level promise.
Step 3: Enable server-level full-page caching
Managed WordPress environments commonly implement full-page caching with Varnish or Nginx FastCGI cache. A server cache can return a prepared response without loading the WordPress runtime and is generally faster than asking a plugin to build the same cache inside PHP.
Define the cache boundary
- Cache anonymous GET and HEAD requests for public posts, pages, archives and landing pages.
- Bypass or vary the cache for logged-in cookies, preview mode, administrator paths, carts, checkout, account pages and other personalized responses.
- Do not cache responses that set or depend on a user-specific cookie unless the cache system is explicitly designed for that variation.
- Set a controlled time-to-live and a purge rule for edits, scheduled publications and taxonomy changes.
Prevent a purge stampede
Purging thousands of objects at once can send the next wave of visitors directly to PHP. Prefer targeted purges for the changed post, its relevant archive pages and feeds. If a broad purge is unavoidable before a launch, warm the most important URLs gradually and watch origin concurrency.
Verify the result
Request the same public URL twice while unauthenticated and inspect the cache-status information supplied by the host or reverse proxy. The second request should be served from cache without a PHP execution. Repeat the check while logged in to confirm that personalized pages bypass the public cache.

Step 4: Add a persistent object cache for dynamic work
WordPress’s built-in object cache is non-persistent by default: its in-memory data lasts only for the current request. A persistent backend keeps frequently used objects available to later requests. The official WordPress documentation identifies Redis, which requires a Redis server, and Memcached, which requires a memcached server plus the PHP memcache or Memcached extension.
Defining WP_CACHE alone does not create persistence. A plugin or drop-in must connect WordPress to the backend. The Transients API stores transients in the options table by default; with a persistent object cache installed, those values can be served through the object cache instead of repeatedly reading the database.
Installation sequence
- Ask the host whether Redis or Memcached is available, which endpoint and credentials to use, and whether the required PHP extension is enabled.
- Install a maintained persistent object-cache plugin from Plugins > Add New, or deploy the host’s supported drop-in. Examples in the WordPress directory include Redis Object Cache and WP Redis.
- Enter the endpoint, port, authentication and database or namespace settings supplied by the host. Do not copy credentials into public documentation or commit them to a theme repository.
- Activate the drop-in and use the plugin’s status screen or WP-CLI integration to confirm that connections succeed and cache operations are being recorded.
- Exercise a representative logged-in page, search, filter and admin screen. Confirm that content remains correct after a cache flush and that a backend outage fails safely rather than preventing WordPress from rebuilding values.
Keep object caching separate from page caching
Object caching and full-page caching solve different problems. The WP Redis documentation describes its cache as WordPress’s internal application object cache, not a page cache. Installing Redis will not make a CDN or reverse proxy cache HTML, and a page cache will not accelerate a personalized request that must run PHP.
Measure before assuming a speedup
More cache calls are not automatically better. The WP Redis FAQ warns that a page load making 2,000 Redis calls can take about two seconds of object-cache transactions. Profile representative requests, reduce unnecessary calls and check network latency between PHP and the cache service. Cache data should be safe to lose: if it is corrupted or flushed, the application should continue and regenerate it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 5: Size PHP workers for cache misses
PHP workers are concurrent execution slots. A worker remains occupied while WordPress waits on PHP code, the database, an external API or a slow filesystem. When every slot is busy, new requests queue even if the machine still shows spare CPU.
Use measured response times
- Measure average and high-percentile response times for uncached public pages, search, login, account pages and checkout separately.
- Record active workers, queued requests, worker saturation and PHP timeouts during a normal period and a rehearsal.
- Apply the worker-to-latency estimate as a starting point, then add headroom for burstiness, slow outliers and background jobs.
- Retest after every major plugin, theme or database change.
A vendor example describes a store growing from 20,000 to 120,000 monthly visits during a holiday sale and suggests that four to eight PHP workers, object caching and burstable CPU may be needed. That is a planning example, not a universal requirement; the proportion of dynamic traffic and the work performed per request determine the real number.
Do not hide a worker shortage with longer timeouts
Increasing timeouts allows more requests to occupy workers for longer and can make a queue collapse harder to recover from. First reduce uncached work, fix slow queries and ensure the page cache is not bypassed accidentally. Then increase workers or compute capacity and retest.

Step 6: Keep the database ready for bursts
Database health determines the duration of every request that reaches WordPress. Before a launch:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Find and fix slow queries rather than assuming Redis will mask them permanently.
- Remove obsolete or oversized data that grows without bound, including unnecessary transient and log data, while preserving content and transaction records.
- Check table growth, available storage, connection limits and backup completion.
- Run maintenance through system-level cron where appropriate so scheduled work does not depend on a visitor arriving at the exact moment of the task.
- Schedule expensive reports, imports and index-heavy jobs outside the predicted peak, or throttle them so they cannot consume every connection.
Object caching reduces repeated reads; it does not repair a query that is intrinsically slow, nor does it replace a database backup and recovery plan.
Step 7: Treat autoscaling as a backstop
Autoscaling can add instances or compute capacity when demand exceeds the baseline, but it does not replace CDN, page caching or object caching. Scaling a pool of servers that all perform the same avoidable PHP and database work simply raises the cost of the bottleneck.
Questions to ask a host
- What metric triggers scaling: CPU, request rate, worker saturation, queue depth or a provider-specific signal?
- How quickly does new capacity become ready, and can the platform scale back without interrupting connections?
- Are CDN delivery, full-page caching and persistent object caching included, or are they separate services?
- What happens to cache contents, uploaded media and scheduled jobs when a new instance appears?
- How are burst resources billed, and can the plan be upgraded without downtime if automatic scaling is unavailable?
Some managed platforms advertise Kubernetes-based autoscaling and load balancing; treat those as features to verify in the current plan terms, not as evidence of a specific performance level.
Step 8: Load-test the real traffic mix
Run tests before a launch, sale or announcement and repeat them after significant changes. A single homepage benchmark misses the requests most likely to fail.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Scenario | What to exercise | Metrics to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Anonymous article burst | One shared article URL and several archive pages through the CDN. | Edge hit ratio, origin requests, time to first byte and error rate. |
| Cache-miss publication | Publish or purge a post, then request it and related archives. | PHP concurrency, database latency, purge duration and regeneration load. |
| Logged-in community | Login, profile, forum read and post flows. | Worker queue, object-cache hit rate, session correctness and write latency. |
| Search and filters | Common keyword searches and the heaviest game, platform or genre filters. | Slow-query time, database connections, response percentiles and cache variation. |
| Commerce or giveaway flow | Cart, checkout, registration and confirmation paths where applicable. | Transaction success, lock waits, payment hand-off errors and queue depth. |
Define pass criteria before the test: maximum error rate, acceptable high-percentile latency, successful logins or checkouts and a recovery time after the load stops. Keep a baseline so a change can be judged against the previous build rather than a vague feeling of speed.

| Decision area | Questions that reveal the real limit |
|---|---|
| Uncached traffic | How many PHP workers are included, can they be increased, and is worker saturation visible? |
| Persistent object cache | Is Redis or Memcached included, which PHP extension is enabled, and are persistent-cache plugins supported? |
| Page delivery | Is a CDN included, where is full-page caching implemented, and how are logged-in and cart cookies excluded? |
| Scaling | Is autoscaling available, what triggers it, how fast does it react, and how is burst usage charged? |
| Operations | Can you load-test, inspect logs and metrics, schedule system cron and upgrade without downtime? |
| Recovery | What are the backup frequency, restore process, cache-flush procedure and database failover options? |
If automatic scaling is not available, a provider should at least offer a fast, non-disruptive upgrade path and enough visibility to know when to use it.
Patterns for a video-games publication
Viral trailer or review launch
Pre-cache the landing page and related evergreen pages, verify CDN delivery from several regions, and keep publication purges targeted. Expect a large anonymous audience first; protect PHP for comments, search and account actions rather than rebuilding the same article for every reader.
Logged-in community discussion
Bypass full-page caching for member pages and posting endpoints. Use persistent object caching for repeated user, forum and taxonomy reads, then test concurrent reads and writes. Watch database locks and worker queues because a page-cache hit will not protect these requests.
Sale, giveaway or registration campaign
Separate the public campaign page from registration, cart or checkout. Cache the explanatory content aggressively, but keep inventory, eligibility and confirmation responses dynamic. Load-test the complete transaction, including failure and retry paths, rather than only the campaign landing page.
Traffic-spike troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| All pages slow, origin request rate close to visitor request rate | CDN or page-cache misses, bypass rules or an exposed origin hostname. | Check cache headers, cookies, DNS and bypass patterns; restore edge and server caching for anonymous URLs. |
| Public pages fast but login, search or checkout time out | PHP workers, database queries or object-cache configuration. | Inspect worker queues and slow queries, verify the persistent-cache connection and add capacity only after removing avoidable work. |
| CPU low while requests queue | All PHP workers are blocked on I/O or the worker limit is too low. | Check worker saturation, database latency and external calls; do not assume more CPU alone will help. |
| Pages become slow immediately after a purge | Cache stampede while many visitors regenerate the same objects. | Use targeted purges, warm priority URLs and temporarily reduce background jobs. |
| Redis appears enabled but responses do not improve | Page caching is being confused with object caching, or the request makes excessive cache calls. | Confirm the drop-in is active, profile cache-call counts and measure database and network latency. |
| New instances serve different content | Cache, uploads or scheduled work are not coordinated across instances. | Verify shared services and deployment rules with the host before enabling horizontal scaling. |
Launch-day runbook
- Freeze nonessential plugin, theme and database changes for the rehearsal and event window.
- Confirm backups and perform a restore check appropriate to the site’s recovery requirements.
- Verify CDN DNS, TLS, cache rules and origin protection.
- Check full-page-cache hits for anonymous URLs and bypass behavior for logged-in, cart, checkout and admin requests.
- Confirm persistent object-cache status, credentials, extension compatibility and safe flush behavior.
- Record PHP worker limits, queue depth, database latency, connections, storage and error rates.
- Run the agreed load scenarios and capture high-percentile latency, not only averages.
- Warm the most important landing pages after any planned purge.
- Pause nonessential imports, reports and maintenance jobs during the predicted peak.
- Keep a rollback, cache-flush and host-escalation contact path available, with one person watching dashboards and another handling content changes.
How far the pattern can scale
One 2026 hosting guide places roughly 500,000 to 5 million visits among the situations where object caching, tuned PHP workers and a cleaned-up database become priorities. It presents those figures as opinion, not a benchmark or a WordPress limit. At still higher demand, the same guidance points toward horizontal scaling, read replicas, edge caching with intelligent purge rules and dedicated infrastructure for requests that cannot be cached.
Those thresholds should not replace measurement. A small site with expensive filters and logged-in sessions can hit its limits earlier than a much larger publication whose traffic is mostly cacheable. Conversely, a high-visit site may remain stable when the CDN and page-cache hit rates are high and dynamic workflows are carefully isolated.

- Installing an object-cache plugin and assuming it also caches pages.
- Defining
WP_CACHEwithout installing and connecting a persistent backend. - Caching logged-in, cart or checkout responses and exposing one visitor’s state to another.
- Purging the entire cache for every edit, then allowing a synchronized rush of cache misses.
- Planning from monthly visits instead of origin requests, concurrency and request cost.
- Adding PHP workers while leaving slow queries, bloated tables or runaway cron jobs untouched.
- Testing only an anonymous homepage and never exercising search, login, posting or checkout.
- Turning on autoscaling without checking billing, cache coordination, uploads and scheduled jobs.
- Assuming a cache is a source of truth. WordPress’s cache documentation recommends that cached data be safe to lose and regenerate.
A durable WordPress setup is therefore a measured system, not a single plugin choice: keep public delivery at the edge, keep anonymous pages in a server cache, accelerate the dynamic paths with a persistent object cache, reserve enough PHP and database capacity for misses, and rehearse the exact spike you expect.
