You can use either notification channel independently. Email is easy to review later and does not require you to be looking at Steam. Mobile alerts are more immediate on a phone but can interrupt you. If you change your mind, Steam also states that you can opt out of email or turn off mobile notifications.

How to add a game to your Steam wishlist
- Sign in to Steam. Use the account that you will use for future purchases and notifications. Wishlist entries and preferences are tied to that account.
- Open the game’s Steam store page. You can reach it from Steam’s search, a discovery page, a friend’s link, or another store listing inside Steam.
- Use the wishlist control on the game page. Steam’s community explainer confirms that a game is added from its store page. The exact wording and placement of the control can change between desktop, web, and mobile interfaces, so follow the control currently displayed rather than a fixed screen-location guide.
- Check your Wishlist. Open the Wishlist area from the current Steam navigation and confirm that the game appears. If it is missing, check that you were signed in to the intended account and repeat the add action from the game’s store page.
- Repeat for the games you are considering. Add only titles you genuinely want to track; a smaller, deliberate list makes sale messages and later purchase decisions easier to manage.
Adding a game does not commit you to buying it. It simply records your interest and makes the title eligible for the notification settings that apply to your wishlist.
Turn on sale notifications
Steam’s labels can change as account pages are updated, and desktop, web, and mobile views may not present the same sequence. Use the current Wishlist controls and account notification controls rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Open your Wishlist. Review the games you want Steam to monitor.
- Open the wishlist or account notification settings shown on your account. Look for controls governing wishlist sale messages and mobile notifications.
- Choose email, mobile alerts, or both. Save or confirm the setting if Steam presents a confirmation step.
- Check the Steam mobile app separately. If you want phone alerts, make sure notifications are enabled for Steam in the app and in your phone’s operating-system settings. Steam can only deliver a mobile alert when both the Steam preference and the device permission allow it.
- Review the settings after major account changes. A new phone, a disabled app permission, or an email preference change can alter how you receive messages.
Steam’s official wording is intentionally broad: it says it will notify you “by email or through our mobile app” when wishlist games are on sale under the deal examples it names. It does not state that delivery is instantaneous, and it does not list every possible sale format. Consider a message a prompt to check the store, not a real-time price-monitoring guarantee.

These are practical differences, not published performance measurements. Pick the least intrusive channel that still matches how often you check Steam.
Make a large wishlist manageable
A long, unstructured list can make every alert feel equally important. Steam’s wishlist update describes custom categories, category-specific notification controls, improved wishlist search, and demo alerts. If those features are available in your current account view, use them to separate buying priorities from casual interest.
Create categories that reflect decisions
Useful category names describe what you will do, not just what a game is. For example, “buy on sale” can contain games you already intend to purchase at a discount; “co-op” can collect multiplayer candidates; and “for later” can hold titles you want to remember without receiving the same level of attention.
Keep category names mutually understandable. A game can be interesting, multiplayer, and discounted, but your categories should still make clear which group controls its alerts when Steam offers category-specific settings.

Apply category-specific notifications
If Steam exposes notification controls per category, enable them for the groups you actively monitor and disable them for low-priority groups. This lets you keep a comprehensive wishlist without treating every entry as an urgent buying signal. Revisit the category assignment when your priorities change.
Use wishlist search
Wishlist search is useful when the list contains more games than you can scan comfortably. Search by the title or other terms Steam supports in the current interface, then review the matching entries before changing their category or notification treatment. Search improves access to the list; it does not expand the kinds of promotions Steam promises to report.
Watch for demo alerts
Steam’s wishlist update also describes demo alerts. If a wishlisted game releases a demo and your current settings offer that type of notification, it can be a way to evaluate the game before buying. Demo messages are separate from sale alerts, so decide whether you want both kinds of information.
What kinds of sales can trigger a message?
The current Steam notification page names Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal alerts. Steam does not promise that every discount in every region or every store campaign will produce an email or mobile alert. A game may be discounted in a promotion that is not covered by the examples on the current page, or a regional schedule may differ.

Do not interpret the absence of a message as proof that a game was never discounted. If a title matters to you, check its store page and your Wishlist periodically in addition to relying on notifications.
Steam’s older announcement from March 15, 2016 described broader discount coverage, including Weeklong Deals and custom-configured discounts, along with more email preference options. That announcement documents how Valve described the system at that time. It should not be treated as a guarantee that today’s labels, deal coverage, or preference screens are identical.
Release and developer messages
A Steam Community announcement dated September 29, 2023 explains that a wishlisted game can prompt release-day and discount emails, as well as developer news. This is a community explanation rather than a replacement for the current account settings page, so use it as context and check the controls currently visible on your account.

The same announcement says, “The developer will know nothing about players who added the game to the wishlist.” In that post’s explanation, developers see aggregate wishlist totals rather than the user’s email address or account name. Treat that statement as the scope described by that community announcement, not as a substitute for reading Steam’s current privacy terms or account settings.
Requirements and account checks
You need a Steam account, access to the game’s Steam store page, and an email address or Steam mobile app if you want notifications. The wishlist itself is a Steam software feature; a gift card, controller, dedicated handheld, or other accessory is not required to create it or receive alerts. A gift card can fund a later purchase, but it does not improve notification coverage.
Use the account that owns your games and that you expect to use at checkout. If you switch between accounts, a title added on one account will not appear in another account’s Wishlist. When troubleshooting, verify the signed-in account before changing notification settings or adding the game again.
Mobile delivery has two permission layers: Steam’s own notification preference and the operating system’s permission for the app. An enabled Steam setting cannot bypass a phone-level block, focus mode, or similar suppression. Email has its own practical checks: confirm the account address, inspect spam or filtered folders, and make sure a mail rule has not diverted Steam messages.
Choose a notification setup that fits your habits
Minimal-interruption setup
Use a category such as “buy on sale,” enable email for that category if Steam provides category controls, and leave mobile alerts off. This keeps sale information available without adding phone interruptions. Check the Wishlist when you are ready to shop.

Understand what an alert does not tell you
A notification identifies a sale opportunity; it is not a promise about the final price you will see. Open the game’s store page to verify the current discount, the sale’s end date, and which edition or bundle is included. Prices, taxes, regional availability, and package contents can differ from what you expected when you first added a title.
An alert also does not mean that the discount will remain available until you are ready to buy. Since Steam does not describe delivery as instantaneous, treat email and mobile messages as reminders rather than reservations. If a purchase is time-sensitive, visit the Wishlist directly and confirm the offer.
Category controls can reduce noise, but they do not create new deal types. Search and categories help you find and prioritize games; they do not expand Steam’s stated coverage beyond the deal examples and notification types shown in your account.
Troubleshoot a missing wishlist alert
- Confirm the game is still on your Wishlist. Open the current Wishlist view and search for the title. If it is absent, add it again from the game’s store page.
- Check the notification preference. Verify that email, mobile, or both are enabled in the account controls currently shown by Steam.
- Check email delivery. Look in spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders, and confirm that the account email address is current. Do not assume that a missing message means Steam did not register the discount.
- Check mobile permissions. Confirm Steam notifications are allowed in the app and in the phone’s system settings. Battery-saving or focus modes can also suppress visible alerts on some devices.
- Review category rules. If you use category-specific controls, make sure the game belongs to a category that still allows the alert type you want.
- Consider the promotion’s scope. The current Steam page specifically names Daily, Midweek, and Weekend Deals. A different sale format or a regional promotion may not be included.
- Open the store page manually. Use the Wishlist as a reminder to check the current price, discount end date, and edition details rather than waiting for a message that Steam does not promise to send.
These checks distinguish an account or device setting from a limitation of the promotion itself. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment restores the channel you prefer.

- Verify prices before buying. Open the store page from the alert or Wishlist and confirm the current offer, edition, and sale timing.
This routine keeps the wishlist useful even when a sale message does not arrive. It also prevents a large list from turning every promotion into an interruption.
