You can play its campaign without joining other players, but the access rule now depends on your platform and edition. On PC, Rockstar says Story Mode generally works without an internet connection after setup. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar’s current support guidance says GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode, so ownership of the correct Online entitlement matters even when you only want the campaign.
Story Mode and GTA Online are separate modes with different connection and account requirements. Before buying, reinstalling, or troubleshooting, identify your platform, the edition in your library, and whether Story Mode was obtained as part of a bundle, an upgrade, a free trial, or a subscription.

What “solo GTA 5” actually means
GTA V’s Story Mode is the single-player campaign. You control the protagonists, complete missions, explore Los Santos, buy properties, and progress through the narrative on your own. It is not a private version of GTA Online and does not require a lobby, matchmaking, or other players.
GTA Online is the separate multiplayer component. It requires an internet connection for online play and uses its own character, progression, activities, and account entitlements. Starting Story Mode does not automatically put you in an Online session, and launching Online is not necessary simply because the game includes the mode.

Rockstar’s store listing for the PlayStation 5 edition distinguishes a GTAV product containing both Story Mode and GTA Online from a standalone GTA Online product in which Story Mode can be obtained as an in-game upgrade: Rockstar’s PlayStation 5 product listing. That distinction is important when a console menu shows GTA V but your account owns only the Online product.
Platform-by-platform answer

The safest short answer is therefore: yes, GTA V is a solo game in Story Mode, but PS5 and Xbox Series X|S currently require GTA Online access to launch that Story Mode. Do not extend that current-generation console rule to PC or to another console without checking its listing.
Playing Story Mode offline on PC
Rockstar’s official wording is that “Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection to play.” The word generally matters. A connection can still be needed for the first installation or activation, periodic entitlement checks, game updates, and cloud-save synchronization. Rockstar documents the launch process in Launching Grand Theft Auto V on PC in offline mode and gives broader launcher guidance in Playing games offline from the Rockstar Games Launcher.

Prepare the PC before disconnecting
- Install and activate while online. Complete the game installation through your authorized PC store and Rockstar Games Launcher, then sign in to the Rockstar Games account associated with the purchase. Rockstar requires that account for PC installation.
- Let updates finish. Launch the game once with a connection so the launcher can apply available patches and confirm that the installed files match the current entitlement.
- Allow saves to synchronize. If you use cloud saves, give synchronization time to complete before going offline. A save that exists only in the cloud may not be available on a computer that has not downloaded it.
- Use the launcher’s offline option. Close unnecessary online features and follow Rockstar’s offline-launch instructions. The exact screen can vary with launcher updates, so use the current support procedure rather than an old menu guide.
- Start Story Mode, not Online. Offline launch is for the single-player campaign. GTA Online cannot be played without an internet connection.
Rockstar may later ask the PC to reconnect. Its separate article on periodic entitlement verification for GTAV on PC explains why an installation that worked offline can eventually require a check. Treat offline play as a supported convenience after verification, not as a guarantee that the PC will never need to go online again.
What can still fail while you are offline
- Unverified ownership: If the launcher cannot confirm the purchase, reconnect and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Out-of-date files: An incomplete update can prevent launch. Connect, let the launcher update, and then try offline mode again.
- Cloud-save mismatch: If the newest save is online-only, reconnect and synchronize before disconnecting. Avoid overwriting a newer cloud save with an older local file unless you have deliberately chosen which version to keep.
- Online-only features: Social, multiplayer, and other network services will not be available in offline mode even though the campaign itself can run.
Why PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are different
Rockstar’s current-generation support article says: “GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” The article was updated November 11, 2025, so older advice claiming that Story Mode on these consoles always works independently of Online may no longer describe the current entitlement model. This is an access and licensing condition, not a statement that the campaign has become multiplayer. Story Mode remains a solo experience; the requirement concerns whether the account has the necessary GTA Online product entitlement to access it on those platforms.

Trial and subscription complications
Rockstar specifically warns that players who obtained Story Mode while accessing GTA Online through a free trial or a subscription such as GTA+, Game Pass, or PlayStation Plus may need to purchase GTA Online to resume Story Mode access. In practical terms, a temporary Online entitlement can make the campaign appear playable for a period and then produce a lock or purchase prompt when that entitlement ends.

A Story Mode purchase made on one account will not automatically grant access to a different account on the same console, and a subscription license can be different from a permanent purchase license.
Rockstar account requirements
Account requirements differ by platform. Rockstar’s account-requirements guidance says a Rockstar Games account is required on PC for installation, online play, and certain online features. That is why a PC copy can ask you to sign in even when your immediate goal is an offline campaign.

On console, Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is not required for Story Mode, although certain online features do require one. Console sign-in to PlayStation Network or Xbox services is a separate platform-account matter. The absence of a Rockstar account requirement for ordinary console Story Mode does not override the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S rule requiring GTA Online access.

Read the product name and included modes instead of relying on a generic “GTA V” label. A listing can represent a bundle with both modes, standalone GTA Online, or Story Mode offered as an upgrade. On PS5, Rockstar’s store page explicitly shows the edition containing Story Mode and GTA Online alongside the standalone Online product and its Story Mode upgrade path: view the platform-specific listing.
- Digital purchase: Verify which account made the purchase and whether the store page says Story Mode is included.
- Physical copy: Confirm that the disc or code corresponds to your console generation and that any required upgrade or entitlement has been redeemed on the intended account.
- Used or transferred accounts: Do not assume another user’s subscription or license follows the disc. Entitlements are tied to the purchasing platform account.
- Subscription access: Check the end date and terms of the trial or subscription that supplied GTA Online access.
Rockstar’s support material is platform-specific. If you are using an edition or console not covered by the PS5/Xbox Series X|S notice, consult the current store listing and support page for that exact configuration rather than inferring the rule from a different generation.

Troubleshooting: Story Mode will not open
On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
- Open the console’s game details and identify whether the installed product is the full GTAV edition, standalone GTA Online, or a Story Mode upgrade.
- Sign in to the platform account that purchased or redeemed the entitlement.
- Check whether GTA Online access came from a trial or subscription that has expired.
- If the account lacks the required Online entitlement, obtain the edition or upgrade that the store lists for your platform, then restart the game.
- If the entitlement appears correct but the game still reports an activation problem, consult Rockstar’s GTA Online activation required error guidance and follow the platform-specific recovery steps.
On PC
- Reconnect to the internet and sign in to the Rockstar Games account used during installation.
- Allow entitlement verification, updates, and cloud synchronization to complete.
- Confirm that the launcher sees the installed files and the correct purchased edition.
- Launch Story Mode once online, then retry the documented offline procedure.
- If the error returns later, reconnect again; periodic verification can require a fresh online check even after successful offline sessions.
If your save seems missing
First determine whether you were using a local save or a cloud-synchronized save. Reconnecting can restore a cloud save that was never downloaded, but choosing the wrong synchronization direction can replace a newer file with an older one. Make a local backup where the platform permits it, then synchronize deliberately rather than repeatedly launching and quitting while offline.
Do you need GTA Online for anything in Story Mode?
On PC, no continuous Online connection is needed for the campaign once setup and verification requirements have been met. You can play missions and explore the single-player world offline. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, however, Rockstar currently requires GTA Online access to launch Story Mode, even though the actual campaign remains solo. On every platform, GTA Online itself requires an internet connection and cannot be substituted with offline mode.
That distinction resolves the common contradiction in forum answers. One person may be describing the gameplay experience—Story Mode has no other players—while another is describing the licensing gate on a current-generation console. Both statements can be true when their platforms differ.
Bottom line for your purchase or setup
Buy or install the edition that explicitly includes Story Mode, then check the platform rule before assuming you can disconnect. PC players can generally launch the campaign offline after activation, updates, and entitlement checks, although periodic reconnection may be necessary. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players should ensure their account has the required GTA Online entitlement because Rockstar currently makes it a condition for Story Mode access. GTA V is unquestionably playable solo; the question is whether your platform and edition let your account open that solo mode.
