Build around the fight in front of you, not a universal tier list. Metria parties have three characters—one main and two sub-characters—so choose owned characters whose elements and skill effects fit the encounter, then keep any shared-buff source in the party while that buff is active.
Start with the enemy and your three slots
Metria’s official guidance is to form a party with the enemy’s element and the skill effects of your party members in mind. The advice appeared in a Feb. 3, 2026 official character pickup notice; it is a useful selection principle, not a published elemental chart or a prescribed lineup.
Make a short list from characters you already own. For each candidate, ask whether their element suits the target, what their skills contribute, and whether that contribution duplicates or complements someone else’s. Since no comprehensive matchup chart or current universal strongest team is established, check the encounter and character descriptions in-game rather than assuming a fixed elemental order.
Choose complementary skill effects, not mandatory roles
A practical way to check coverage is to look for damage, buffs, and debuffs across the party. This is a flexible framework from community advice, not an official rule that every team must contain exactly one of each. A Jan. 25, 2025 GameFAQs guide uses those role labels and lists element-specific suggestions, but its author notes that updates may change the meta. Treat its lineups as historical ideas, not current best-in-slot recommendations.

- Damage: Include characters whose attacks or skills help you defeat the target.
- Buffs: Look for useful effects that strengthen your party, and note which character activates them.
- Debuffs: Consider effects that hinder the enemy when they suit the fight.
These are questions to ask of your roster, not a demand to fill three separate job slots. If a character’s element or skill effects better answer the encounter than a neat role label does, prioritize the encounter fit.
Keep a shared-buff source in the party
An official update dated Sep. 1, 2026 clarifies an important party-management rule: if the character who activated a shared buff is removed from the party, the buff is removed too. Adding that character back does not reactivate it; cast the skill again. If the source character stays in the party, switching which character you control does not remove the buff. The update also applies the source-character requirement in multiplayer, for that player’s party and session. See the official Metria update.
In practice, distinguish switching the controlled character during combat from changing the party itself. You can rotate control among your three party members without losing the shared buff, provided its source remains in the formation. If you replace that source, plan to cast the skill again after bringing the character back.
Use all three characters in combat
Pocket Gamer’s Metria guide for new players describes a party with one main character and two sub-characters and says players can switch among all three during combat. It also describes character-specific attacks and abilities, including Skill 1, Skill 2, and an EX skill that functions as an ultimate. Use those descriptions as a guide to the combat interface, and rely on each character’s current in-game skill text for its actual effects.

When choosing who to control, consider which character’s attacks or skills best fit what is happening in the fight. The sub-characters still matter as party members: their skills and any shared effects are part of the composition even when you are controlling someone else.

Team strength is not only a matter of which three portraits you select. Metria’s Nov. 12, 2024 official update says User Level and Growth Level raise the stats of characters in formation and discusses gear inheritance conditions. Those are dated mechanics, so check the current in-game menus and item descriptions before following specific inheritance or upgrade steps. The update is available through the official notice index.
Upgrade the characters you actually use and review their current equipment and skill descriptions as they progress. A 2024 equipment explanation does not establish that a particular gear tier or character remains optimal now.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Identify the target. Check the enemy and its element; do not substitute an assumed universal matchup chart.
- Compare owned candidates. Check each character’s element and skill effects against that encounter.
- Check party coverage. Consider damage, buffs, and debuffs as useful roles, while allowing your roster and the fight to determine the mix.
- Protect active shared buffs. Keep the source character in the party, or expect to cast the skill again if you remove and later restore them.
- Develop the formation. Review current progression and gear options for the characters you chose.
- Switch in combat. Control the character whose attacks or skills suit the moment, without removing a shared-buff source from the party.
What not to infer from old lineups
There is no established current official tier list, complete elemental matchup chart, or universally strongest three-character combination in the cited material. The GameFAQs role suggestions date to Jan. 25, 2025, while official attacker examples such as Faina, Lucas, Aru, Haylead, Melchior, and Gote appeared in a pickup notice for a banner that ended Feb. 24, 2026. That notice described those characters as specializing in attack; it does not establish their present availability or rank them against the full roster. Use such examples to understand role vocabulary, not as a reason to chase a specific character.
