Choose Old School RuneScape (OSRS) if you want a retro-styled MMO, challenging levelling and risk-it-all PvP. Choose RuneScape if you want Jagex’s current version—or if you’re returning and want to find your existing profile and items. You can access both games with one RuneScape account, but each has a separate character and separate progress. OSRS starts you with a new character.
Which RuneScape should I play?
Neither version is an objective upgrade over the other. They are distinct games with different character profiles and a different feel. Use this comparison to make the choice based on what you want from your first session.
| What matters to you | Good fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A retro-style game based on the 2007 version | Old School RuneScape | OSRS is Jagex’s version based on RuneScape from 2007; it launched in 2013. You begin with a fresh character. Jagex Support explains the two versions. |
| The current RuneScape game | RuneScape | Jagex describes RuneScape through skills, quests, combat and world exploration. See Jagex’s RuneScape game information. |
| Returning to an old profile and its items | RuneScape | Your existing RuneScape profile belongs to that version. OSRS uses a separate character and does not import your stats or items. Jagex Support details profile separation. |
| Challenging levelling and risk-it-all PvP | Old School RuneScape | These are features the official OSRS homepage highlights. Visit the OSRS site. |
| Trying the game before deciding about membership | Either; OSRS has an official “Try Free” entry point | Membership is an optional expansion, not a prerequisite established by the official pages for starting. See OSRS’s free-play option. |
What is the difference between RuneScape and Old School RuneScape?
Jagex describes RuneScape as the game players may remember and OSRS as a separate version launched in 2013, based on RuneScape from 2007. The two versions are not alternate views of the same character: each has its own profile, stats and items.
Jagex Support puts it plainly: “A single RuneScape account gets you access to two versions of the game, each with their own separate character profiles.” The same support page says: “Profile progress is completely independent, meaning that character information, stats, and items do not transfer between the two games.” Read the RuneScape and Old School comparison.

Can I play both with one account?
Yes. One RuneScape account can access both games, but you will have separate characters and progress in each. If you want to play OSRS, expect to start from scratch; your RuneScape character, stats and items do not carry over. Likewise, playing OSRS does not advance the profile you use in RuneScape.
How to start playing RuneScape or OSRS
- Choose a version. Pick RuneScape for the current game or to return to your old profile; pick OSRS for its retro-styled version, levelling and PvP emphasis. If you are unsure, you can try one and later play the other, while keeping in mind that their characters are independent.
- Open the official OSRS download page and select your platform. Jagex lists the Jagex Launcher for Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as Steam, the App Store and the Play Store. Availability and download routes can change, so use the current options on the official OSRS download page.
- For OSRS, use “Try Free” to begin without membership. The official OSRS homepage provides that entry point and also offers membership.
- Decide about membership after trying the game. Jagex describes membership as adding content such as skills, quests, regions, bosses and member worlds in OSRS, and extra quests and skills in RuneScape. The live benefits can change; see the OSRS membership benefits page for its current description.
- If you are returning, launch RuneScape to look for your old profile. Starting an OSRS character is a separate beginning, not a way to recover or transfer that profile.
Can I start RuneScape for free?
The official OSRS site offers a “Try Free” route. Membership is presented as an optional expansion, so a new player can first see whether the game suits them and consider paid access later. Jagex’s OSRS membership page lists additional quests, skills, regions, bosses and member worlds; its RuneScape information page also describes additional member content. Check the live game pages for current access details rather than assuming membership benefits or availability are fixed.
