Build your Game of Thrones: Legends team for the battle you are entering—not around a single supposedly unbeatable lineup. For Raid defense, plan to survive long enough to trigger your team’s payoff; for an Alliance dragon assault, build around that boss’s mechanics, stamina rules, and damage windows. Then check faction and leader bonuses against the game version you are playing.
Start with the battle’s job
A strong squad is five Champions whose skills and board play work together. The game’s core loop includes collecting and upgrading Champions, equipping weapons and gear, and matching gems to charge Champion abilities. Consider how a team will stay alive, build stamina, and use its skills—not just the rarity or power of the names on the roster. Zynga’s game overview describes those systems.
- Raid defense: make the opponent work through your protection and healing, then reach the team’s main damage or Enrage payoff.
- Alliance Legendary Assault: account for the boss’s special effects and the shared encounter rules; the right timing can matter more than copying a defensive squad.
- Ordinary progression: use Champions you actually own and have upgraded, with enough survival and ability charge to handle the stages you are facing.
Before settling on a lineup, check its leader ability, the faction bonus it activates, how it charges skills, and whether its survival tools let its damage plan come online.
Use factions as a tool, not a five-Champion rule
In a February 12, 2026 update summary, Zynga said the faction system would shift from a scaling three-, four-, and five-member bonus to a flat bonus for three faction members. The update also described improved leader abilities and initial dual-faction support, with the changes slated to be live for all players after February 17, 2026. The stated aim was to make teams less dependent on filling all five slots from one faction and leave more room to experiment. Read Zynga’s faction revamp summary.

Faction rules can change. Zynga’s September 5, 2026 announcement described further faction changes as work in progress and expected in late September; it does not confirm whether or how those plans went live. Check the broader factions announcement, and verify current in-game bonuses and leader effects rather than treating that plan as a confirmed live rule.
Raid defense example: build toward Enrage
Zynga’s October 10, 2025 Raid setup named this Blacks team as a top Iron Throne Raid defense lineup at that time:

The useful lesson is the composition’s plan, not a promise that this is the best defense today. Zynga described Enrage as its central payoff and offered two ways to reach it:
- Survive until Enrage: use shields, Renew, or a fast taunt Champion. The post named Stannis, Meryn, and Wun Wun as taunt options, including Wun Wun as leader.
- Accelerate key skills: use Criston Cole or Khaleesi to speed stamina so Rhaenyra or Rhaenys can use skills more often.
The same post identified Epic Rhaena, The Guardian Rook, and Crownlands Knight as fury sources that can help trigger Enrage. Dragonstone Maester can add taunt and heal Targaryens who take damage. Which route makes sense depends on your available and upgraded Champions: protection buys time, while faster stamina brings key skills forward. Zynga called the lineup its highest defensive win-rate team at the top Iron Throne tier then, but published no numerical rate. See the dated Blacks team setup.

Dragon assaults: time skills around the boss
Alliance Legendary Assault has encounter rules that can change how often skills are useful. In its July 20, 2026 dragon design diary, Zynga described two effects applying across the mode:
- Alliance Ramp: bosses grow stronger as the battle progresses.
- Exhaustion: Champions cannot gain stamina after using their skill twice in one turn.
That makes skill timing and stamina management part of the team build. A squad that depends on repeating skills in the same turn may lose its expected charge rhythm under Exhaustion, while Alliance Ramp makes delaying meaningful damage increasingly costly. Viserion: use the sleep cycle as a setup window
Against Viserion, attacking during his sleep cycle wakes him angrily and harms the team. Use that window to heal and prepare damage dealers instead of spending attacks into the awakening penalty. Zynga’s diary says the sleep period was shortened to two turns and describes ways to bypass the cycle:
- BRITTLE can prevent the rude awakening.
- RAID reduces Viserion’s DEF and Durability.
- Claw Swipe removes BIRTHRIGHT, so account for that effect when planning around the buff.
The diary says each Alliance boss was designed with at least two playstyles it is explicitly weak to, while leaving room for experimentation. Compare candidate squads by encounter synergy, survival, damage timing, and skill or stamina management—not rarity alone.

A practical way to choose and improve your lineup
- Identify the mode and objective. Decide whether you are defending a Raid, progressing through stages, or attacking an Alliance boss.
- Read the encounter effects. For a dragon assault, check the boss’s abilities and shared rules such as Alliance Ramp and Exhaustion before choosing Champions.
- Choose a plan your roster can execute. Pick a survival-to-payoff route, a skill-acceleration route, or a boss-specific timing strategy based on Champions you own and can upgrade.
- Check faction and leader effects. Confirm the active bonuses in your current game version; do not force a fifth same-faction Champion if another pick better supports the plan.
- Match board play to skills. Gem matches charge abilities, so consider when the lineup needs healing, protection, stamina, or damage and avoid spending a key skill at the wrong point in a boss cycle.
- Adjust one weakness at a time. If the squad falls before its payoff, add survival; if it survives but cannot convert that time into damage, improve charge or damage timing. Reassess after balance or faction updates.
