If you want the most dependable way to play PS5 games, use a PS5 console. PC emulators are experimental, and their compatibility changes from game to game. Remote Play lets you stream from a PS5 or PS4 to another device, but it still requires the console. When a game has a PC version, that version is a separate product—not an emulated copy of the PS5 release.
Can you play PS5 games on PC without a PS5?
There are two different possibilities: an experimental emulator attempting to run PS5 software, or an official PC release of a game. Neither is equivalent to playing a PS5 game on a PC through Sony-supported console compatibility. Emulator projects are independent and describe their work as experimental; official PC releases are separately sold products when available.
What PS5 emulation can do today
KytyPS5 says its development focuses on expanding game compatibility and improving boot reliability, while SharpEmu describes itself as an experimental PS5 emulator. These are project status statements, not guarantees that a particular game will run or an endorsement from Sony. Check each project’s current compatibility information for the specific title and emulator version: KytyPS5 project and SharpEmu project.
There has been reported progress, but it is narrow evidence rather than a general performance promise. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 27, 2026 that SharpEmu v0.0.4-release.2 reportedly ran six titles at 60 FPS, amid continuing development of shader translation and Vulkan support. That is a report about one build and six games, not an independently established benchmark for other titles, computers, or settings. Tom’s Hardware’s report and GamesRadar’s coverage describe compatibility claims, not Sony certification.

What an official PC release means
A PC edition is its own product, not emulation of the PS5 version. Sony says PlayStation Studios’ PC and console versions are different products, and save data currently cannot transfer between PS4/PS5 and PC versions. Availability depends on the game. Is there a working PS5 emulator?
Experimental PS5 emulators exist, and reports of some games running are real, but “working” needs a game and version attached to it. Compatibility is not universal, projects are still changing, and successful operation of a small set of titles does not establish reliable support for a game you want to play. Neither Sony nor the cited reporting provides a certified, representative comparison showing that emulation reliably matches console play.

For the console baseline, Sony documents PS5 gameplay on PS5 hardware. Sony also says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, although certain PS4-only titles are excluded and some games may have missing functions, errors, or unexpected behavior. That backward compatibility applies to PS4 games on a PS5—not to running PS5 games on a PC. See Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance for the exceptions and caveats.

Can you use Remote Play instead of a PS5 emulator?
Remote Play can be a practical way to play on a computer, phone, tablet, or another supported screen when the console is elsewhere. It streams from a PS5 or PS4; it does not run the game independently on the receiving device. Sony lists a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience, but meeting those figures does not guarantee low latency or a particular image quality. Set up Remote Play on a Windows PC
- Confirm you have a PS5 console, a PlayStation account, an internet connection, and a compatible controller.
- On the Windows PC, use Windows 10 or 11 and follow Sony’s Windows Remote Play setup instructions. The described Windows configuration also lists a USB cable.
- Connect to the console through the Remote Play app and use the controller to play. Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps for best performance; actual streaming quality depends on network conditions.
Those Windows instructions are for that configuration; requirements and controller options can differ on other receiving devices. Sony’s Remote Play page lists compatible device categories and guidance.
Is an emulator better than buying a PS5?
There is no evidence-based universal winner on price or performance. A comparison depends on the computer you already own, the game, its availability as a PC release, and whether the emulator supports it reliably. The available emulator reports do not establish that a high-end PC will outperform a PS5 across games, and Remote Play does not remove the console requirement. If dependable access to PS5 games is the priority, the PS5 is the supported option; an emulator is an experiment whose fit must be checked title by title.

What about legality?
There is no single legal answer established here for every reader. Rules may depend on jurisdiction and on the specific conduct involved, including emulator development, circumvention, firmware, and game copying. An emulator project’s own guidance about legally obtained files is not a legal ruling. Check current law and applicable terms where you live, and do not assume that owning a console or game automatically resolves every legal question about copying or running files.
