For most nonprofits, self-hosted WordPress.org is the safer starting point when the site needs donation forms, custom integrations, or other plugins. Secondary guides report that WordPress.com plans can restrict the free plugins that make a nonprofit site useful; treat that as a guide-level warning rather than a universal rule and confirm the current features of the plan you are considering.
With WordPress.org, your organization pays a hosting provider, controls the database and files, and can install compatible plugins. That control also creates responsibilities: someone must apply updates, test changes, keep backups, and manage administrator access.

Set the project scope before buying anything
Write a one-page requirements brief
- State the mission in one sentence and identify the audiences the site must serve: beneficiaries, donors, volunteers, journalists, and partners.
- List the actions that matter at launch, such as making a donation, registering for an event, downloading an annual report, or requesting help.
- Decide who owns content, who approves financial information, and who can administer WordPress.
- Record the country or countries where the nonprofit operates. Donation receipts, privacy notices, and tax language depend on local rules.
Keep the first release small
A focused launch is easier to test and maintain. Start with the home, about, programs, donate, contact, and transparency pages. Add a blog, events calendar, volunteer workflow, multilingual content, or member portal only when there is a named owner and a maintenance budget for each feature.
Register a domain and select hosting
Pick a clear domain
- Choose a short name that matches the nonprofit’s public identity.
- Prefer a
.orgaddress where it accurately represents the organization. - Avoid unnecessary hyphens and numbers; they are harder to say, remember, and type.
- Use an account owned by the nonprofit, not by a departing volunteer or an outside contractor.
Evaluate hosting against nonprofit needs
Look for one-click WordPress installation, free SSL, automated backups or a backup option, 24/7 support, and a clear process for restoring the site. Ask whether the provider offers a nonprofit program and whether the discount applies to renewals, not just the first term.

Guides commonly name Bluehost, SiteGround, and DreamHost as hosting options, but those recommendations are low-confidence and can become outdated. Compare current storage, traffic, staging, backup retention, support response, renewal price, and nonprofit terms rather than choosing from a name list.
Connect the domain and enable SSL
- Create the hosting account in the nonprofit’s name.
- Point the domain’s nameservers or DNS records to the host’s instructions.
- Enable the host’s free SSL certificate and wait for HTTPS to work before publishing forms.
- In WordPress, open Settings → General and confirm both the WordPress Address and Site Address use
https://. - Test the home page, donation page, contact form, and file downloads in a private browser window.
Install WordPress and secure the foundation
Use the host’s installer
- Open the hosting control panel and choose its WordPress or WordPress.org installer.
- Install to the intended domain, not a temporary subdirectory, unless the host’s documentation requires staging first.
- Create a unique administrator username; do not use
admin. - Use a password manager to generate a long password and enable two-factor authentication when the host or security tool supports it.
- Set the site language, timezone, and permalink format under Settings → General and Settings → Permalinks.
Control administrator access
- Give each staff member an individual account; never share one administrator login.
- Use the lowest role that allows a person to do their work.
- Remove accounts when staff or contractors leave.
- Keep one emergency administrator account in a secure organizational password vault.
Plan backups before installing plugins
Keep at least one backup outside the hosting account and verify that it can be restored. A backup that has never been tested is only an assumption. Record how to restore both the database and uploaded files, and decide how long financial and donor records should be retained under local policy.
Choose a theme without mistaking “accessible” for compliant
Start with a clean, fast, mobile-friendly theme that has an active update history and does not add unnecessary visual effects. Review its keyboard behavior, heading structure, color contrast, form labels, and skip-link behavior in a test site.

Build the essential information architecture
Home
Explain the mission immediately, show the communities served, and give one primary action such as Donate or Get help. Keep the first screen understandable on a phone and do not hide the mission behind a carousel.
About
Introduce the organization, its history, leadership, registration details where relevant, and a contact route. Link to governance documents when they are public.
Programs
Create one page per major program when that improves clarity. Describe eligibility, location, schedule, measurable outcomes, and how someone can ask for support. Use plain language rather than internal program names.
Donate
Explain what donations fund, whether gifts are one-time or recurring, accepted payment methods, and what happens after payment. Make the form usable without a mouse and keep required fields to a minimum.

Contact
Publish an email address or form, phone and office details where appropriate, hours, and an accessible alternative for people who cannot use the form.
Transparency
Provide annual reports, financial summaries, governing documents, and an explanation of how restricted gifts are handled. Label each document with its year and make PDFs searchable, structured, and readable with assistive technology.
Add one donation tool and understand the fees
Install one donation system first. Multiple overlapping forms create duplicate donor records, inconsistent receipts, and more maintenance. Before launch, make a real low-value test donation, verify the receipt, confirm the money reaches the intended account, and check how recurring gifts are canceled.

- Connect the payment account in the plugin or hosted service using the organization’s legal details.
- Set the receipt sender, reply-to address, organization name, and privacy contact.
- Configure one-time and recurring amounts, suggested amounts, and a custom amount field.
- Write a confirmation page that explains expected fulfillment and support contact details.
- Export a test transaction and confirm that donor name, amount, campaign, recurring status, and consent fields are recorded.
Tax-receipting rules differ by country and donation type. Have the nonprofit’s accountant or legal adviser approve receipt language; do not assume a plugin’s default receipt satisfies local law.

Meet a WCAG 2.2 Level AA baseline
W3C published WCAG 2.2 as a W3C Recommendation on 5 October 2023. It adds nine success criteria compared with WCAG 2.1. WordPress.org states: “WordPress aims to make the WordPress Admin and bundled themes fully compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA, where possible.” Its developer coding standards say: “code in the WordPress ecosystem is expected to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), version 2.2, at level AA.” These goals do not make an individual nonprofit site compliant automatically.
A secondary reference reports WCAG 2.2 was also approved as ISO/IEC 40500:2025 on 21 October 2025. Check the current ISO version and jurisdictional requirements before citing that standard in a formal policy.
Apply the practical checks
- Use sufficient color contrast for text, controls, links, and focus indicators.
- Write meaningful alternative text for informative images; use empty alternative text for purely decorative images.
- Make every function operable with a keyboard and keep focus visible.
- Maintain a logical heading hierarchy. Do not choose a heading level only because its font looks attractive.
- Provide captions for video and transcripts for audio.
- Use descriptive link text, clear error messages, and labels that remain understandable when read by a screen reader.
- Ensure donation fields, date pickers, cookie controls, and embedded services work without a pointer device.
Use tools as aids, not substitutes
The free WP Accessibility plugin is named in guides for fixes such as skip links and label issues. It can help, but it cannot correct inaccessible content, a broken third-party form, or poor interaction design. Accessibility overlay widgets are not a substitute for building and testing the site correctly.
Run keyboard tests, zoom and reflow tests, color-contrast checks, and screen-reader checks on a representative set of pages. Consider an independent accessibility audit before launch, especially if the nonprofit serves people with disabilities or receives public funding. Every additional plugin adds another update, compatibility risk, permission surface, and source of accessibility problems. Start with the donation tool, security protection, backups, and only the content features the launch requires. Before adding a plugin, ask whether the requirement can be met by WordPress core or by configuring an existing tool.

Evaluate each plugin
- Check when it was last updated and whether it supports the current WordPress version.
- Read its privacy, payment, and data-export documentation.
- Test it on staging before production.
- Confirm keyboard access and screen-reader labels in the feature you will publish.
- Assign an owner who will monitor updates and respond if it breaks.
Budget for nonprofit discounts without relying on unverified offers

Launch in controlled stages
Content and function review
- Read every page aloud and remove unexplained jargon.
- Check that names, dates, phone numbers, addresses, and donation amounts are correct.
- Submit contact and donation forms from a phone and desktop.
- Confirm that confirmation emails arrive and do not land only in spam.
- Open annual reports and other downloads on multiple devices.
Technical review
- Test HTTPS, redirects, canonical domain behavior, and 404 pages.
- Check page speed on a cellular connection and compress oversized images.
- Verify backups and perform a restoration in a staging environment.
- Update WordPress, themes, and plugins only after a backup, then retest donations and forms.
- Review administrator accounts and remove temporary testers.
Accessibility sign-off
Keep a written record of keyboard, zoom, contrast, heading, alternative-text, caption, and form-label checks. Fix critical barriers before launch, document remaining issues, and assign owners and dates rather than treating accessibility as a one-time checkbox.

The donation form stops working after an update
Put the site in maintenance mode only if necessary, restore the last known-good backup or disable the recently updated component, and test the payment connection on staging. Contact the plugin or payment provider with the WordPress version, plugin versions, error message, and time of failure.
A receipt shows the wrong organization or amount
Pause promotion of the form, make a test donation, inspect the receipt template and payment settings, and reconcile the transaction with the processor. Have the finance owner approve corrected wording before re-enabling campaigns.
Visitors report that they cannot navigate by keyboard
Reproduce the path with the Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, and Escape keys. Check for a missing focus indicator, a trapped modal, an unlabeled field, or a third-party embed. Replace or reconfigure the offending component rather than adding an overlay and assuming the issue is solved.
The site is compromised or filled with spam
Take a forensic backup, restrict administrator access, contact the host, rotate credentials, and restore a clean copy if needed. Do not delete random files from a live installation before preserving evidence and confirming the recovery plan.

Operate the site after launch
Set a recurring maintenance schedule. At least monthly, review updates, backups, uptime, forms, donation reconciliation, broken links, and administrator accounts. Review programs, contact information, reports, and campaign pages whenever the organization changes them. Keep a staging copy for major theme, plugin, and payment changes.
As funding grows, spend first on reliable backups, support, accessibility testing, and staff time. New features should have a purpose, an owner, a privacy assessment, and a rollback plan. A smaller site that remains accurate, accessible, and secure serves donors and beneficiaries better than a feature-heavy site no one can maintain.
