Your standard WordPress login address is https://yourdomain.com/wp-login.php. If WordPress is installed in a subfolder, include that folder (for example, https://yourdomain.com/blog/wp-login.php). You can also visit /wp-admin/ while logged out; WordPress normally redirects that request to the login screen.

WordPress does not provide a built-in dashboard setting for replacing this path. To use a different address, either configure a login-hiding plugin such as WPS Hide Login or have a developer implement a login_url filter and rename the login file. The plugin approach avoids core-file edits; the code approach avoids a plugin but requires maintenance after WordPress updates.

Find the login address WordPress uses
The default installation
On a normal root-domain installation, open:
https://yourdomain.com/wp-login.php
The same login form is normally reached by opening https://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/ while signed out. WordPress detects that you are not authenticated and sends the browser to the login page. This redirect is useful when you do not remember the exact login-file address.
A site installed in a subfolder
If WordPress lives below the domain root, add the installation folder before the file name. For a site installed in a folder called blog, use:

The corresponding administration address is https://yourdomain.com/blog/wp-admin/. Replace blog with the actual folder name; the folder is case-sensitive on many servers.
A site running on a subdomain
For a subdomain installation, place wp-login.php after the subdomain:

Opening https://blog.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/ while logged out should again redirect to the login form.
When the default paths no longer work
If both /wp-login.php and /wp-admin/ send you to the homepage or return a 404, a security plugin may have changed the public login path. Guides commonly identify WPS Hide Login, Perfmatters, and All In One WP Security as plugins that can intercept the default requests. Check the security-related plugins installed on the site and their settings for a custom login slug.
A homepage redirect is different from a failed password. It usually means the request is being redirected before WordPress displays the login form, so repeatedly resetting the password will not restore the page.

What changing the URL does—and does not do
A custom login address changes where legitimate administrators go to sign in. It is not a new authentication system. The account, password, cookies, roles, and WordPress administration area remain the same.
There is also an important distinction between changing links and blocking the old endpoint:
- The
login_urlfilter changes URLs that WordPress generates, such as links produced for login forms and authentication redirects. - The filter alone does not prevent a visitor from requesting
/wp-login.phpdirectly. - A plugin that intercepts requests, or a carefully implemented file-and-routing change, is required if the old path must stop serving the login form.
That distinction explains why a site can appear to have a new login link while automated requests to wp-login.php still reach the old endpoint.
Change the URL with a login-hiding plugin
Why this is the lower-maintenance route
WPS Hide Login does not rename or edit WordPress core files. It intercepts requests so that the standard wp-admin and wp-login.php paths are inaccessible, then exposes the login form at the slug you choose. Because core files remain in their expected locations, this method is designed to survive WordPress core updates without repeating a file rename.
You still depend on the plugin: removing, deactivating, or misconfiguring it changes how the login request is handled. Record the replacement URL in a secure password manager before saving the setting.

Setup steps
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard with an administrator account.
- Open Settings > WPS Hide Login.
- Find the Login URL field and enter the new path, such as
member-entry. Enter the slug rather than the full domain unless the screen specifically asks for a complete URL. - Set the Redirection URL for visitors who request the old login paths. Choose a page that does not reveal the login form.
- Save the settings. The plugin displays or links to the resulting login address; copy it to your password manager.
- Open a private or incognito browser window and test the new address while logged out. Keep the existing administrator session open until the test succeeds.
After the change, links generated by WordPress should point to the new path, while direct requests to the old paths are handled by the plugin according to the redirection setting. If another plugin, theme, reverse proxy, or cache has a hardcoded reference to wp-login.php, that component may still produce a broken link.
Change the URL with code and a renamed login file
What the code method involves
The code route removes the dependency on a login-hiding plugin, but it is an advanced maintenance task. Guides describe adding a filter such as:

add_filter( 'login_url', 'custom_login_url', PHP_INT_MAX );This filter makes WordPress generate /member-entry/ in places where it would ordinarily generate the default login URL. It does not, by itself, disable direct visits to /wp-login.php.
The file-rename requirement
Implementations described for this method also rename the login file to match the chosen path. That is a change to the WordPress installation rather than a dashboard preference. A developer should make a complete backup, understand the server’s rewrite rules, and verify that the renamed file still loads WordPress’s login actions before exposing the new address.
Do not treat the filter as a complete replacement if the old file remains publicly reachable. Conversely, do not rename the file without a working route and a tested recovery plan: a typo can lock every administrator out.

Maintenance after core updates
WordPress core updates can restore or replace the standard login file. Guides therefore warn that a file-rename implementation must be redone after updates. Before applying an update, record the custom filename and filter. Afterward, test the new URL, /wp-admin/, password-reset links, and any front-end login form. A theme or plugin update can also reintroduce a hardcoded wp-login.php reference.

For most site owners, the plugin route is easier to reverse and less likely to be overwritten by an update. The code route can be appropriate when avoiding another plugin is a firm requirement and a developer will maintain the installation.
Test the new address without locking yourself out
Use a separate browser session
Keep your current administrator window open. In a private window or a different browser, open the new URL, sign in, and confirm that the dashboard loads. This prevents an unsuccessful change from ending the only active session you have.

- Open the new login URL while logged out and confirm that the form appears.
- Open the site’s
/wp-admin/address while logged out and observe whether it follows the behavior you configured. - Request
/wp-login.phpdirectly and verify that the result matches your intended policy: an interception or redirection for a plugin setup, or an unavailable endpoint for a correctly implemented custom route. - Use a password-reset link and any front-end login form your site provides. These often expose hardcoded paths that the dashboard itself does not.
Clear misleading cache results
A page cache, browser cache, content-delivery layer, or hosting redirect can make an old response appear after a successful change. Test in a private window first. If the private test is correct but a normal window is not, clear the relevant cache rather than changing the login setting again.

Plugin-based change
If a security plugin supplied the custom path and you no longer know it, deactivate that plugin outside the WordPress dashboard. Guides suggest using FTP or the hosting control panel to rename the plugin’s directory or otherwise deactivate it. Some guides also describe disabling the plugin in the database when filesystem access is unavailable.

Once the plugin is inactive, the default /wp-login.php address should return. Sign in, correct the setting or reinstall the plugin if necessary, and write the replacement URL somewhere secure before reactivating protection.
Code-based change
For a code implementation, restore the login file to the expected name and remove or correct the filter that points generated links to the custom path. If the site uses server rewrite rules, restore those rules as well. Make one change at a time and test the default address before attempting another custom slug.
If the page still returns a 404
Check whether the plugin was actually deactivated, whether a second security plugin is intercepting the request, and whether a host-level redirect remains. A 404 from the web server can indicate routing or rewrite configuration rather than a WordPress password problem.
Security limits and complementary protections
URL hiding is obscurity
Moving the login form can remove most automated traffic aimed at the conventional path, according to guides describing this technique. It does not stop a determined attacker who discovers the new address, follows a leaked link, or identifies it through an application response. It should therefore be treated as a traffic-reduction measure, not as authentication or a firewall.
Add rate limiting or two-factor authentication
Guides recommend pairing a hidden login path with login rate limiting or two-factor authentication. Rate limiting reduces repeated password attempts; two-factor authentication requires an additional proof after the password. Neither depends on keeping the URL secret, so both continue to protect the site if the custom address becomes known.
Account for hardcoded references
Plugins and themes that explicitly call wp-login.php can break after a change. Audit front-end login widgets, membership forms, password-reset templates, cron tasks, and integrations before declaring the migration complete. Update those references to use WordPress’s generated login URL or the new path.

Choose the right approach
Choose the plugin route when
- You want to avoid editing or renaming core files.
- You need a dashboard setting that can be changed without server access.
- You want the change to persist through routine WordPress core updates.
- You can accept a third-party plugin as part of the site’s login stack.
Choose the code route when
- You have a developer who can manage file changes and rewrite behavior.
- Adding a plugin is not acceptable for this installation.
- You have a tested backup and a documented post-update procedure.
- You understand that the filter alone does not block the old endpoint.
Whichever method you use, keep a recovery route, test from a logged-out browser, and combine the URL change with controls that defend the account itself.
The Bottom Line
Start with /wp-login.php (including any installation subfolder), or use /wp-admin/ while logged out. WordPress has no built-in custom-path setting: a login-hiding plugin is the maintainable option, while a code filter and renamed file require developer oversight and post-update repairs. Hiding the path reduces routine automated traffic but must be paired with rate limiting or two-factor authentication.
