What a conduit does and what “powered” means
A conduit is a craftable underwater structure whose effects begin only after its frame and water requirements are satisfied. “Powered” does not mean that it needs fuel, redstone, electricity, or a particular biome. The game checks the water around the conduit and the number and type of blocks in its frame.
The frame determines the conduit’s effective radius. The radius is spherical, so the effect reaches outward in every direction rather than filling a square or a flat horizontal strip. A minimal activation frame reaches 32 blocks; adding more valid frame blocks raises the available range through 48, 64, 80, and finally 96 blocks.

The complete frame has one additional combat benefit: hostile mobs within 8 blocks can be damaged when they are in contact with water or rain. That damage effect requires the full 42-block frame; a minimal 16-block ring is enough to activate the conduit but does not provide the complete-frame combat effect.

Do not substitute slabs, stairs, or walls for the qualifying full blocks. Those variants may look like prismarine construction, but they do not count toward the activation total.
Craft the conduit
- Collect one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the Heart of the Sea in the center slot.
- Place one nautilus shell in each of the eight surrounding slots.
- Take the conduit from the result slot.
The recipe is fixed: one Heart of the Sea surrounded by eight nautilus shells. You do not need prismarine in the crafting grid; prismarine-family blocks are used for the activation frame after crafting.
Choose and prepare the location
Pick the conduit’s final center point before building the frame. It can activate in any biome and at any height or depth as long as the water and frame conditions are met. A deep ocean is convenient because it already supplies water and nearby prismarine sources, but a custom pool, base, or enclosed room works as well.
Make the 3×3×3 water volume
The conduit must sit at the center of a water-filled 3×3×3 volume. Think of this as three blocks wide, three blocks long, and three blocks high, with the conduit occupying the middle position. The surrounding spaces must contain water when the game checks the structure.
Source water is the simplest arrangement, but the mechanics also permit flowing water or waterlogged blocks in the surrounding positions. If you are building on land, flood the entire volume before testing the frame. Isolated air pockets are a common reason a correctly shaped frame remains inactive.

Keep the center accessible while building
Place the conduit at the intended center, then build around it without replacing the surrounding water with air. If you need to drain the area temporarily, refill every position of the 3×3×3 volume before judging whether the conduit works.
Build the minimum activating frame
The quickest working design is a 5×5 open-square ring centered on the conduit. Use 16 full qualifying blocks around the perimeter of that square, leaving the interior open. The conduit remains at the center of the ring, surrounded by water.
Construct one 5×5 ring
- Choose a plane through the conduit’s center. The ring may be horizontal or vertical.
- Mark a 5×5 square centered on the conduit.
- Place blocks only around the square’s perimeter. A 5×5 perimeter contains 16 positions.
- Use only full prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine-brick, or sea-lantern blocks.
- Leave the center position for the conduit and keep the surrounding 3×3×3 volume water-filled.
Once all 16 positions are occupied by qualifying blocks and the water condition is met, this starter ring activates the conduit and provides a 32-block spherical range.
Use a complete three-ring frame
For maximum range, add two more 5×5 rings in planes perpendicular to the first. The three rings intersect around the conduit, so their shared positions overlap; the finished structure contains 42 unique qualifying blocks rather than 48.
- Keep the first 5×5 ring centered on the conduit.
- Add a second ring on a perpendicular plane.
- Add the third ring on the remaining perpendicular plane.
- Check that every frame position uses a qualifying full block and that the central water volume has not been drained.
The complete 42-block frame provides the maximum 96-block spherical range and enables the full-frame hostile-mob damage effect.
Frame sizes and conduit range
The documented range tiers are 32, 48, 64, 80, and 96 blocks. The minimum and maximum block totals are established directly: 16 blocks activate the conduit at 32 blocks, while 42 blocks complete the frame at 96 blocks. The cited references do not state a separate exact qualifying-block total for each intermediate tier, so do not rely on an unverified threshold when planning a build.

If you need a guaranteed 96-block radius, build all three rings rather than stopping after a partially expanded design. If you only need a compact local effect, the 16-block ring is the least expensive working option.
How to choose between a starter ring and the full frame
Build the 16-block ring when
- You are testing the conduit before committing more prismarine.
- Your base is compact and a 32-block spherical range covers the useful area.
- You have enough material for activation but are still gathering the rest from an ocean monument or ocean ruin.
- You do not need the complete-frame hostile-mob damage effect.
Build all 42 blocks when
- The conduit must cover a large underwater work area or approach route.
- You want the maximum documented 96-block range.
- You need the full-frame damage effect against hostile mobs near the conduit.
- You want a finished structure instead of upgrading the frame later.
The choice is structural rather than technological: both designs use the same crafted conduit and the same accepted block types. The difference is how many valid frame positions you complete.
Why a conduit fails to activate
Check the following in order. Changing several things at once makes it harder to identify the actual fault.
1. The water volume is incomplete
Inspect the entire 3×3×3 area around the center, not only the blocks immediately beside the conduit. Replace air with water and refill any spaces that were drained while constructing the frame. Flowing water and waterlogged blocks can be valid where the mechanics allow them, but an unfilled position still prevents activation.
2. The frame has fewer than 16 qualifying blocks
Count the blocks that occupy frame positions. The activation minimum is 16 valid blocks. A ring that looks almost complete can still be one block short, especially when viewed underwater or through dark prismarine.
3. Decorative variants are being counted by mistake
Remove slabs, stairs, and walls from the frame and replace them with full blocks. The accepted categories are full prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine bricks, and sea lanterns.

4. The blocks are outside the intended ring positions
A pile of qualifying blocks nearby does not substitute for a centered 5×5 ring. Recheck that the blocks form the perimeter of a square centered on the conduit. For a full build, verify that the other two rings are perpendicular and meet at the same center.
5. The center moved during construction
If the conduit was broken and replaced, recenter the rings around its current position. Even a one-block shift can leave the frame visually close while its positions no longer describe a centered design.
6. The frame was built from the wrong material
Stone, quartz, coral, or other decorative blocks do not count merely because they resemble the intended palette. Replace non-qualifying pieces with one of the four accepted full-block categories.

Gathering the materials efficiently
Heart of the Sea
The official Minecraft conduit guide identifies buried treasure as the source of a Heart of the Sea. Plan to secure this item before collecting frame blocks, because no amount of prismarine can replace the single required heart in the recipe.
Nautilus shells
You need eight shells for one conduit. The cited official guide lists three sources: drowned, wandering traders, and fishing treasure. Keep a written count while gathering; seven shells leave you unable to craft the conduit even if the Heart of the Sea is ready.
Prismarine-family frame blocks
Ocean monuments and ocean ruins are important sources of prismarine and related materials. The acquisition tutorial specifically notes that the upper portion of an ocean monument can supply a 16-block starter frame. If you are planning the 42-block maximum, gather enough additional qualifying blocks to complete the two perpendicular rings as well.

A practical construction checklist
- One Heart of the Sea is in your inventory.
- Eight nautilus shells are in your inventory.
- The conduit has been crafted.
- The center location is fixed and will not be moved.
- The surrounding 3×3×3 volume is completely water-filled.
- At least 16 frame positions contain full prismarine, dark prismarine, prismarine-brick, or sea-lantern blocks.
- No slab, stair, or wall is being counted as a qualifying frame block.
- Any extra rings are centered on the same conduit and placed on perpendicular planes.
- You have counted unique blocks, not the same intersection block multiple times.
Upgrading an existing conduit
You do not need to dismantle a working 16-block design to expand it. Leave the conduit and starter ring in place, preserve the water-filled center, and add qualifying blocks in the positions for the perpendicular rings. After each expansion, verify the total number of valid blocks and check the observed range tier.
When building in stages, protect the 3×3×3 water volume from accidental drainage. A partially built ring can be valid as long as it still has at least 16 qualifying blocks; a completed three-ring frame is the reliable route to the 96-block maximum.
Understanding the full-frame damage condition
The complete frame’s damage effect is narrower than its range effect. The 96-block range describes the conduit’s maximum spherical reach, while hostile-mob damage applies within 8 blocks. The target must also be in contact with water or rain. A hostile mob standing farther than 8 blocks away, or one that is not touching water or rain, does not meet the stated condition for this effect.
This distinction matters when designing defenses. Use the full frame for the maximum area and treat the 8-block damage zone as a close perimeter around the conduit, not as a replacement for a large-radius protection field.
Quick build plans
Compact base conduit
- Craft the conduit from one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells.
- Flood a 3×3×3 volume at the base’s center.
- Place one 16-block 5×5 ring around the conduit.
- Confirm the 32-block spherical range before decorating the room.
Maximum-range underwater installation
- Prepare the full water-filled center first.
- Place the conduit exactly at the center.
- Build the first 16-block ring.
- Add the second and third perpendicular rings.
- Count 42 unique qualifying blocks.
- Use the finished structure when a 96-block range and the close-range hostile-mob damage effect are both required.
Final verification before you leave the site
Stand back and inspect the whole structure from several directions. The conduit should be centered in a water-filled 3×3×3 volume, the frame should use only full accepted blocks, and the count should be at least 16. For the maximum build, all three perpendicular rings must be present and the unique-block count must be 42. If any one of those checks fails, correct the structure before assuming the conduit itself is defective.
