On Linux, the reliable npm release path is: create a project directory, generate package.json with npm init, write and test the module, inspect the exact archive with npm pack --dry-run, authenticate with npm, then publish either an unscoped package with npm publish or a scoped public package with npm publish --access public. Treat the package name and version as permanent once published, and remove secrets before upload.

What you are actually publishing
An npm package is a versioned Node.js module described by a package.json manifest and distributed through the npm registry. The manifest tells npm the package’s name, version, and entry point. In a basic CommonJS module, the entry point is the main field. Consumers install the published name and load the entry point from their own projects.

Recommended Free Tools
npm recommends starting a new module at semantic version 1.0.0. The name and version together identify a release. npm does not let you reuse that pair after publication, even if you later unpublish the package, so the final spelling, scope, and version deserve a deliberate check before the upload.
Prepare a Linux development environment
You need a working Node.js and npm installation, a shell, a text editor, and an npm account permitted to publish. Run these commands in a terminal:

node --version
npm --version
If either command is unavailable, install Node.js and npm using the Linux distribution or Node.js setup you normally maintain, then open a new shell and verify both commands again. Keep the project in a directory you control; the package archive is built from that directory’s contents.
Create the package directory and manifest
-
Create a directory and enter it:
mkdir my-package cd my-package -
Generate the manifest from the project root:
npm initThe interactive prompts ask for values such as package name, version, description, entry point, test command, repository, keywords, author, and license. npm’s module documentation specifies running
npm initin the root directory of the Node.js module to createpackage.json.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Review the resulting file. At minimum, verify the package
name, the releaseversion, and the entry point named bymainfor a CommonJS package. A new module can begin at1.0.0; change the value if your release policy requires another starting version.
For a scoped package, use the scoped initializer instead:
npm init --scope=@scope-name
Replace @scope-name with a scope you control or are authorized to use. The finished name has the form @scope-name/package-name.
Write code, documentation, and tests
Implement the entry point
Create the file referenced by main, such as index.js, and export the functions or objects that consumers should use. Keep internal scripts, fixtures, and local experiments separate from the public entry point so that the package has a clear interface.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you change the entry-point filename, update main in package.json and test the package from a clean directory. A manifest that points at a file absent from the archive can install successfully but fail when a consumer requires the module.

Write a useful README
Put a README.md at the project root. Explain what the module does, the supported runtime assumptions, installation command, a minimal usage example, exported API, and known limitations. The README is also the first place users look when an install or import appears not to work, so make the example match the actual entry point and exports.
Add tests before release
Tests should exercise the public behavior a consumer relies on, not only private helper functions. Run the complete test command locally and check the exit status. Include edge cases that could expose missing files, incorrect exports, or assumptions about the current working directory.
Control what goes into the tarball
Publishing uploads an archive, not your entire working tree by intent. Review the files npm will package and remove anything that should never leave your machine. npm specifically warns authors to remove private keys, passwords, personally identifiable information, and credit-card data before publishing.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Exclude local and sensitive files
- Remove credentials, API tokens, SSH keys, password files, and payment data from the project directory.
- Keep personal data, private test fixtures, and unpublished business material outside the package.
- Use
.npmignoreto exclude files from the npm archive. A suitable.gitignorecan also help keep local artifacts out of source control, but inspect the npm archive rather than assuming the two lists behave identically. - Check generated logs, coverage output, editor settings, operating-system metadata, and large local fixtures for accidental inclusion.
Preview the exact archive
From the project root, run:
npm pack --dry-run
Read the printed file list as if you were an outsider installing the package. Confirm that the README, entry point, required source files, tests or test helpers that are intentionally distributed, and license information are present. Confirm that credentials and private material are absent. If the list is wrong, adjust the project or ignore files and repeat the preview before publishing.
Test installation from outside the project
A module can pass tests when executed inside its repository yet fail for a consumer because of a wrong entry point, an omitted file, or an undeclared assumption about local paths. Test the packed project from a separate directory:
- Create a temporary directory that is not inside
my-package. - Install the local package by path:
npm install /absolute/path/to/my-package
- Write a small consumer script in the temporary directory and exercise the same public API documented in the README.
- Run the consumer’s tests or example. Check that the module resolves through its declared entry point and that every runtime file is present.
- Delete the temporary directory after the verification, or retain it as a reproducible smoke-test fixture.
After publication, repeat the smoke test with the package name from a fresh directory. This catches differences between a local path installation and the registry copy.
Choose unscoped or scoped naming
The namespace determines both ownership and default visibility. Use this comparison before you finalize package.json.

| Package form | Namespace | Default visibility | Public command |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unscoped | Global npm namespace, for example package-name |
Always public | npm publish |
| Scoped | User or organization scope, for example @scope-name/package-name |
Private by default | npm publish --access public |
Unscoped names compete in the global namespace, so a desired name may already be taken. A scoped name identifies the user or organization that owns the scope, but npm treats it as private unless you explicitly set public access during publication. Decide the visibility before release; do not assume that a scoped package is public merely because its source is intended for open use.
Authenticate securely before publishing
Publishing requires either 2FA enabled on the npm account or a granular access token with bypass-2FA enabled. Sign in using npm’s supported account workflow and verify that the authenticated account is the owner or authorized publisher for the selected name and scope.
Interactive account publishing
Use account-based authentication when a maintainer is publishing from a trusted workstation. Complete any one-time-password challenge npm presents. Keep the workstation free of credential files that could be included in the package archive.
Automation credentials
For CI, prefer npm trusted publishing where the workflow is supported instead of storing a long-lived publish token in repository variables. npm documents trusted-publishing support for GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD, including provenance information in that workflow. Limit any token that you must use to the narrowest permissions and protect it as a secret.
Publish a direct release
Do the final checks in this order:
- Open
package.jsonand confirm the exact name, scope, version, entry point, and intended registry. - Run the project’s full test command.
- Run
npm pack --dry-runand inspect every listed file. - Install and exercise the package from a clean external directory.
- Confirm that npm authentication is active and that 2FA or the permitted granular token is available.
- Publish with the command matching the package form.
Unscoped public package
npm publish
Unscoped packages are always public, so this command makes the selected version live immediately after npm accepts it.
Scoped public package
npm publish --access public
The --access public flag is required to make a scoped package public. Without it, npm’s default for a scoped package is private.
Watch the command output for the package name and version npm reports. If the result is not the package you intended, stop and investigate rather than attempting to reuse the same name-and-version pair.

Use staged publication when review must happen later
Direct publication releases a version as soon as the command succeeds. npm also documents a staged workflow in which CI submits a release for review and a maintainer approves it later with 2FA:
npm stage publish
npm stage list
npm stage approve <stage-id>
Use npm stage publish when automated checks should prepare the release but a human must inspect the candidate before it becomes live. Use npm stage list to identify the pending stage, then approve the correct stage ID with npm stage approve <stage-id>. Approval requires 2FA. This separates build submission from the final release decision and is useful when CI runs on every proposed change.
| Workflow | Release timing | Review point | CI fit |
|---|---|---|---|
Direct npm publish |
Immediate when accepted | Maintainer reviews before running the command | Simple pipelines where automated publication is acceptable |
| Staged publication | After explicit approval | Maintainer reviews the submitted stage | Pipelines that require a human release gate and 2FA approval |
Build a repeatable CI release
Keep the pipeline’s responsibilities separate. The build job should install dependencies, run tests, and generate the package preview. A release job should publish only after those checks pass and only from the branch or tag your team has authorized.
- Use a clean Linux runner so the archive is not influenced by an author’s untracked files.
- Run the same test command used locally.
- Capture the
npm pack --dry-runoutput for review or logs. - Use trusted publishing for supported GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD workflows when you do not need a stored publish token.
- If staging is part of the release policy, have CI submit with
npm stage publishand require a maintainer to approve the identified stage.
Do not let a CI job silently publish every branch build. A package name and version are not disposable identifiers, so an accidental release cannot be repaired by simply uploading the same pair again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check when publication fails
The name is already unavailable
An unscoped name may already belong to another publisher. Recheck spelling and capitalization, then choose an available name or a scope you control. Do not alter the project after a successful release while expecting the old name and version to become available again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA scoped package remains private
Scoped packages default to private. Publish the intended public version with npm publish --access public, and confirm that your account can publish under the scope.
npm requests 2FA or rejects the credential
Publishing accepts an account with 2FA enabled or a granular access token configured to bypass 2FA. Check that you are authenticated as the correct account and that an automation token has the required setting. For a staged release, the final approval still requires 2FA.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The published module cannot be loaded
Install the package from a clean directory and inspect the manifest’s main field. If it points to a missing or incorrectly named file, correct the project and prepare a new version. Also compare the failing file with the npm pack --dry-run list; an ignore rule may have removed a required source file.
Unexpected files appear in the archive
Run npm pack --dry-run again, identify the source of each unwanted file, and update .npmignore or the project layout. Remove secrets from the filesystem rather than relying only on an ignore rule, because a later command or archive configuration could expose them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The local test passes but the registry install fails
Repeat the test from a new directory using the published package name. This isolates the package from its repository and reveals missing files, incorrect exports, or dependencies that were available only in the original working tree. Fix the package, increment the version, and test the new archive before another release.
Final release checklist
- Confirm the registry, exact package name, scope, version, and entry point in
package.json. - Run all automated tests.
- Review the complete
npm pack --dry-runfile list. - Remove private keys, passwords, PII, payment information, and other confidential material.
- Install and exercise the package from a clean external directory.
- Verify the authenticated npm account and its permission for the name or scope.
- Use 2FA or a narrowly scoped granular token; use trusted publishing in supported CI where practical.
- Choose the command that matches visibility:
npm publishfor unscoped public packages, ornpm publish --access publicfor scoped public packages. - If a review gate is required, submit with
npm stage publishand approve the intended stage with 2FA. - Record the released name and version because that pair cannot be reused after publication.
A practical release sequence
For a small Linux project, the complete first-release sequence can stay short while still preserving the important safety checks:
mkdir my-package
cd my-package
npm init
# edit package.json, write the module, README, and tests
npm pack --dry-run
npm publish
Use npm publish --access public in the final line for a scoped package intended to be public. The commands do not replace the review steps: test from outside the project, inspect the archive, remove sensitive data, and verify the name and version before the publish command.
Bottom line
npm publication on Linux is straightforward when the release is treated as an immutable, inspectable artifact. Build the manifest with npm init, document and test the public API, preview the tarball, verify it from a clean directory, authenticate with the required 2FA or token configuration, and select the visibility-specific publish command. For automated teams, trusted publishing or a staged approval flow adds control without changing the package structure consumers install.
