How to Bulk Upload Files to the WordPress Media Library via FTP

FTP puts files on the server; an importer or WP-CLI must register them as WordPress attachments. Follow this secure, verifiable bulk-upload workflow.

Uploading files with FTP copies them to the server, but it does not create the WordPress attachment records that power Media Library. A dependable bulk workflow is to connect with SFTP when available, place files in the site’s actual uploads directory, register them with a maintained importer or WP-CLI, and then verify URLs, metadata, thumbnails and permissions.

Why FTP-uploaded files do not appear in Media Library

WordPress treats a media item as more than a file on disk. The file must exist in the configured uploads location, and WordPress must also have an attachment record in its database. That record stores the file path, URL, MIME type, title and other metadata used by the Media Library and the editor.

An FTP client can complete the first part without doing the second. You may be able to open https://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/manual.pdf in a browser while Media → Library remains unaware of the PDF. Nothing is necessarily wrong with the transfer; the registration step was skipped.

The same distinction applies to screenshots, cover art, trailers, patch notes and downloadable game manuals. Copying bytes is useful for moving a large batch, but every file that should be selectable in WordPress needs an attachment record.

Choose the right bulk-upload method

Method Access required Best fit Important limits and trade-offs Date and metadata handling
WordPress Multi-File Uploader WordPress administrator account Ordinary batches that fit the host’s browser and server limits Simplest interface, but constrained by the maximum upload size and execution limits configured by the host WordPress creates attachment records during upload; no separate scan is needed
FTP or SFTP plus an importer plugin WordPress administrator account plus server-file access Large directories, visual selection of files already on the server, and users who prefer an interface Importer quality, maintenance, compatibility and filesystem permissions determine the result; large directories may require queued processing Depends on the importer; confirm whether it preserves file dates and creates image metadata
FTP or SFTP plus WP-CLI SSH or another shell account with WP-CLI access Repeatable, scriptable imports managed by an administrator Requires command-line experience, correct site path and safe shell practices; command options can change between releases --preserve-filetime uses local modification times for attachment dates; other metadata depends on the imported file and WordPress processing

Use the native uploader when it handles the batch cleanly. Choose an importer when the files are already on the server and you need a visual scan. Choose WP-CLI when you have SSH and want a repeatable process that can be documented or automated.

Prepare access, backups and a test batch

  • Back up first. Take a database backup and a file backup, or confirm that your host can restore both. Registration changes the database even though the original transfer changes files.
  • Use a staging site for an unfamiliar importer. Test a small, representative set containing at least one large image, one ordinary image and one PDF if those are part of the real batch.
  • Confirm who can work on the site. You need WordPress administrator access for a plugin-based scan. WP-CLI additionally requires shell access and permission to run commands as the site’s WordPress installation.
  • Obtain server credentials from the host. Record the hostname, port, username, authentication method and the directory that contains the WordPress installation. Do not place credentials in a shared document or a shell-history command.
  • Check available storage. Images may produce additional WordPress sizes during registration, so free space must cover the original batch and generated derivatives.

Step 1: Decide whether FTP is necessary

Open Media → Add New before setting up server access. WordPress’s Media Add New documentation states that the screen supports both single items and bulk uploads. Its Multi-File Uploader displays the maximum upload size supplied by the host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the batch is below that limit and the browser remains responsive, the native route is less complicated: files are uploaded and registered together. FTP becomes useful when browser uploads time out, the batch is very large, the files already exist on the server, or you need a repeatable administrator-controlled transfer.

Step 2: Prefer SFTP over plain FTP

WordPress’s FTP administration documentation warns that “FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, sends data in clear text.” Plain FTP can expose usernames, passwords and transferred content on an untrusted network. When your host offers SFTP, use it; SFTP runs through SSH and normally uses a different port and authentication flow.

  1. Create or request a dedicated transfer account rather than using the hosting account’s master credentials.
  2. Limit that account to the WordPress directory, or to the narrowest directory that can hold the batch.
  3. Use an SSH key for SFTP when the host supports keys, and protect the private key with a passphrase.
  4. Connect from a trusted network, verify the host fingerprint when your client presents one, and avoid saving the password in an unencrypted client profile.
  5. Disable the temporary account or remove its access after the transfer if it is no longer needed.

If plain FTP is the only option, treat it as a temporary exception: use a trusted network, restrict the account, and ask the host whether FTPS or SFTP can be enabled instead.

Step 3: Find the site’s real uploads directory

The familiar path wp-content/uploads is common, not universal. WordPress can use a custom uploads path, multisite sites can have separate directory structures, and object-storage or host integrations can make the apparent local path non-canonical.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  1. Open the site’s media or storage settings and note any custom upload-location value shown by the installation.
  2. In the hosting panel or SFTP client, locate the directory that contains existing WordPress-uploaded files. A few recent files are useful for confirming the correct site and year/month folders.
  3. Check whether the installation is multisite. Select the individual site’s upload location rather than assuming the network’s document root is the destination.
  4. Ask the host where files should be placed when an object-storage integration, CDN, or managed filesystem is active. A local directory may not be the authoritative media store.
  5. Do not guess from a similarly named folder belonging to a staging copy, another domain or an older backup.

Record the exact absolute path for later WP-CLI work. Moving files after registration changes the relationship between the attachment record and the physical file, so settle the destination before importing.

Step 4: Organize and validate the batch locally

Use stable names and folders

Keep a predictable structure such as game-title/screenshots, game-title/manuals and game-title/press. Use filenames that are unique, descriptive and compatible with your host. Avoid changing names between the transfer and registration stages because the attachment URL and generated metadata are based on the registered path.

Separate files by purpose

Put images, PDFs and other document types in clearly identified subfolders. This makes a small test import easier and helps you spot an incorrect MIME type or a batch copied to the wrong site.

Check the source files

  • Open a sample from each format before transfer.
  • Remove temporary exports, thumbnails and duplicate copies that should not become separate Media Library items.
  • Keep a manifest containing each filename and its intended folder. A manifest is useful when diagnosing a missing or duplicated attachment.
  • Preserve the source modification times if attachment dates matter; do not assume every importer will retain them.

Step 5: Transfer the files with an FTP or SFTP client

  1. Connect to the host with the credentials and protocol selected above.
  2. Navigate to the confirmed WordPress uploads directory. Verify the domain or installation name before selecting the destination.
  3. Create the planned subfolders if they do not already exist. Keep directory names consistent with the manifest.
  4. Upload a small test group first. Wait for the client to report completion, then compare the remote file count and sizes with the local batch.
  5. Open one transferred file through its expected web path, if the site permits direct access. A successful browser response proves that the web server can find the file, but it does not prove that WordPress has registered it.
  6. Transfer the remaining files in manageable batches. If the client reports a failed item, retry that item and record the result rather than assuming the whole queue succeeded.
  7. Leave the files in place. Do not rename, move or re-folder them between the transfer and the registration scan.

At this stage the files should be visible to the operating system and, where direct access is allowed, to the web server. They are still not guaranteed to appear in Media → Library until the registration step is complete.

Step 6: Register the files with an importer plugin

A maintained importer scans a server directory, creates attachment records and usually lets you review or select the files before processing. WordPress.org’s listing for tools described as External files in Media Library documents complete-directory mass import, FTP support, queues for large directories and WP-CLI support. Features differ between releases, so inspect the current plugin documentation before a production run.

Evaluate the importer before installing it

  • Check the plugin’s latest release date, supported WordPress and PHP versions, and compatibility notes.
  • Confirm that it can scan the exact uploads path and handle the file types in your batch.
  • Look for queueing or chunked processing when the directory is large; a single browser request can time out on a very large scan.
  • Determine whether it skips existing attachments, creates duplicates, preserves modification dates and generates image metadata.
  • Confirm whether it supports multisite and whether it can be run from WP-CLI if you later need a repeatable process.

Run a controlled import

  1. Install the importer on staging, or on production only after confirming the backup.
  2. Open its scan or import screen and select the directory containing the test batch, not the entire server.
  3. Review the detected filenames and deselect cache files, temporary exports and items that should remain outside Media Library.
  4. Start the import and keep the browser window open if the tool uses an interactive queue. Follow any progress or retry instructions it displays.
  5. After completion, search Media → Library for several imported files and compare the attachment URLs with their actual paths.
  6. Repeat with the next subfolder only after the test behaves correctly.

If the importer offers a “complete directory” operation, use it only after the small test confirms its duplicate and metadata behavior. Keep the original manifest so you can reconcile the number of files detected with the number of attachment records created.

Step 7: Register files with WP-CLI

WP-CLI’s official reference defines wp media import as creating attachments from local files or URLs. It is useful when SSH is available and you want a command that can be repeated for future batches.

Confirm the command context

  • Change to the directory containing the correct WordPress installation, or provide the installation path using the WP-CLI options documented for your release.
  • Run the command as a system user that can read the files and write the WordPress database and required upload metadata.
  • Verify that the active site is the intended production, staging or multisite installation before importing.
  • Back up the database and files, and begin with one subfolder or a handful of files.

Import a batch

A documented glob pattern is:

wp media import /path/to/wp-content/uploads/batch/* --preserve-filetime

The shell expands the asterisk before WP-CLI receives the filenames. For a directory containing more files than your shell can pass in one command, split the work by subfolder or by smaller batches. Keep the command output so you can identify failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

--preserve-filetime tells WP-CLI to use each local file’s modification time for the attachment date. This is useful when the source timestamps represent the publication or capture date, but verify the resulting dates in WordPress because filesystem timestamps can be altered during copying.

The --skip-copy option can leave local files in place instead of copying them. Use it only when the files are already in the correct uploads location and your current WP-CLI release documents the option as suitable for that situation. Importing from an unrelated local path without copying can leave attachment records pointing to files that the web server cannot reach.

Handle command-line safeguards

  • Do not run a wildcard against the entire uploads tree until a small test proves how the current command handles existing attachments.
  • Review the current release documentation for options marked unstable; their behavior can change.
  • Expect WordPress to process image metadata and sizes during import, which can take longer than the file transfer itself and consume additional storage.
  • If a command stops partway through, record the files already registered before rerunning. Repeating the same broad glob without checking can create duplicate attachment records.

Verify the result in WordPress and on the server

  1. Open Media → Library and search for files from each imported folder. Confirm that the expected number of attachment records exists.
  2. Open several attachment details and compare their URLs with the paths shown by the SFTP client. A URL that contains an old folder or staging domain indicates that the wrong directory or site was used.
  3. Check MIME types. An image should be identified as an image, and a PDF should not be imported as an unrelated generic type merely because its extension was changed.
  4. For images, open the attachment or insert it into a test post and inspect available sizes. Missing sizes or broken previews point to an image-processing or permissions problem.
  5. For PDFs and other documents, download a sample through the Media Library link and confirm that the file opens intact.
  6. Test the front end while logged out or in a private browser window. This catches access rules, hotlink protection and authentication assumptions that an administrator session can hide.
  7. Inspect the uploads directory ownership and permissions. The web server must be able to read the files, and WordPress must have the access required to create or update generated metadata.
  8. Compare the final attachment list with your manifest and database backup record before deleting any source copy.

Troubleshoot common failures

Files are on disk but absent from Media Library

The registration step did not run, targeted the wrong folder or lacked permission to create database records. Recheck the path, run the importer on a small subset, or use wp media import from the correct installation. A browser URL alone does not register an attachment.

The importer finds no files

Confirm that its scan path is the real uploads directory, not a parent folder belonging to another site. Check whether the plugin is restricted to selected extensions, whether the account can read the directory, and whether an object-storage integration bypasses the local filesystem. Test with one known image whose path you can verify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permission denied errors appear

Inspect ownership and permissions on the uploads directory, its subfolders and the files. The SFTP account may be able to upload while the PHP process cannot read or write the same location, or the reverse may be true. Ask the host to correct ownership rather than applying broad, insecure permissions recursively.

Images appear but thumbnails or intermediate sizes are missing

The file may be readable while WordPress cannot write generated sizes, or the image-processing library may reject the source. Check available disk space, directory write access and the original image’s integrity. Reprocess one small image after correcting the filesystem issue before repeating the whole batch.

Attachment dates are wrong

FTP transfer timestamps can differ from the source timestamps. For WP-CLI imports, use --preserve-filetime when the local modification time is the date you want, then verify several records. Importer plugins may use their own date rules, so consult the current tool documentation instead of assuming that FTP times will survive.

Duplicate attachments were created

Make an inventory of existing attachment records and files before retrying. Test the importer’s duplicate behavior on a few files, and import only the missing subset. Do not delete records or files by filename alone: two legitimate files can share a basename in different folders, while one attachment can have generated sizes that also match a search pattern.

The command reports too many arguments or times out

Split the glob into smaller subfolders or batches. Large imports can also exceed PHP, web-request or shell limits when run through a browser-based tool. WP-CLI avoids browser request timeouts, but image metadata generation still consumes CPU, memory and storage; run batches during a maintenance window if the host is constrained.

Files open directly but links in posts are broken

Check the attachment URL stored by WordPress, the site URL for the correct environment, and any domain or HTTPS change made after the files were copied. If the physical files were moved after registration, return them to the registered path or use a controlled migration that updates attachment records and references.

A multisite import lands in the wrong library

Each site in a network can have its own upload location and Media Library context. Select the intended site before running an importer or WP-CLI command, and verify the resulting attachment records while viewing that site’s dashboard.

Manage rollback and future batches safely

Keep the original files until the Media Library links, post embeds and downloads have been tested. A database backup without the corresponding files cannot restore the media, and a file backup without the attachment records cannot restore the library relationships.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a failed import, stop processing, record which files were registered, and restore the database and uploads directory from the matching backup when a clean rollback is required. If you only need to remove a small test, first identify the attachment records created by that test and the physical files they reference; deleting one side alone leaves orphaned records or orphaned files.

For recurring game-content releases, keep a dated manifest, a consistent folder convention and a written command or importer configuration. Repeat the small test whenever the host, WordPress version, PHP version or importer release changes. This makes future batches auditable without relying on an undocumented wildcard command.

Practical decision checklist

  • Use Media → Add New when the host’s displayed upload limit and browser workflow are sufficient.
  • Use SFTP rather than clear-text FTP whenever the host provides it.
  • Confirm the canonical uploads path, especially on multisite or object-storage setups.
  • Back up both database and files before creating attachment records.
  • Transfer with stable names and do not move files before registration.
  • Register with a maintained importer or the official WP-CLI command; copying alone is not enough.
  • Test a small subset before a complete-directory import.
  • Verify attachment records, URLs, MIME types, image sizes, downloads and permissions.
  • Check duplicate behavior and preserve file dates deliberately rather than assuming either.
