In EA SPORTS FC 26, build a custom tactic in My Tactics: choose a formation, set the build-up style and defensive approach, assign player roles and focuses, then save the setup with a tactics code. Start from a saved code or a Tactical Suggestion if you want a stable baseline.
To find out whether a change actually helps, test it in the same mode, gameplay preset, squad context and opponent conditions you intend to play. Change one setting at a time, record the specific behaviour you wanted to alter, and judge repeated patterns rather than one match. EA describes the available systems, but it does not publish a validated test protocol, success threshold or universal best tactic.

What a custom tactic changes in FC 26
Your formation is the starting shape, not a promise that every player will stand on a fixed spot. In FC 26, roles and focuses influence where players look for the ball, when they support an attack and how they recover. EA says players are less constrained by roles than in earlier versions and can make more flexible attacking movements. That flexibility is useful, but a role remains an instruction: it does not guarantee the same run on every possession.
FC 26 also adds a Versatile focus for some roles and reduces the penalty for being out of position. Those changes make experimentation less punishing, yet every aggressive instruction still creates a trade-off. A player who joins an attack may arrive in a useful area more often, but can also leave a space that another player must cover. Build a tactic around the behaviour you want to repeat, not around the assumption that a named role is automatically superior.

EA’s FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive introduces the changes with the sentence, “Our focus this year can be summed up in 3 words: make gameplay better.” That is a design goal, not a claim that one formation or role wins more matches for every squad.
Choose the test context before editing anything
A tactic can feel different when the gameplay preset, mode, opponent or squad changes. FC 26 has two presets with different aims, so decide where the tactic will be used before you evaluate it.
| Gameplay preset | EA’s intended context | What to keep consistent during a test |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive | Head-to-head Ultimate Team and Clubs; passing is faster and control is more direct. | Use Competitive for every comparison if that is where you play. Do not transfer a conclusion from this preset to Career Mode without retesting. |
| Authentic | A more true-to-football experience in modes such as Career. | Use Authentic for every comparison when the tactic is intended for Career or another mode using that preset. |
Write a short test brief before opening the tactics screen. State the mode, preset, squad, intended defensive shape and the match behaviour you want to change. Examples include creating a reliable wide outlet, adding a midfield runner without losing protection, or giving the goalkeeper a safe passing option. A clear target prevents you from changing settings simply because a match felt uncomfortable.

1. Establish a baseline you can restore
Open My Tactics and record the current setup before making edits. The most reliable record is a saved tactics code, supplemented by a note of the formation, roles, focuses, build-up style, defensive approach and line height. A baseline lets you return to the original version after an unsuccessful experiment.
You can also use a Tactical Suggestion as a starting point. EA says a suggestion adapts to your existing formation and is intended to suit your team, so it can provide a sensible set of instructions without replacing the shape you selected. It is a starting point, not evidence that the resulting tactic is best for your players. Save the suggestion as your baseline before changing individual roles.
2. Select the formation that supports your defensive shape
Choose a formation that gives your available players natural positions and produces the defensive structure you want when possession is lost. Count the protection you have in front of the centre-backs, the number of players able to cover wide areas and the outlets available for the first pass. A formation that looks attractive in an attacking screen may leave a gap that your roles cannot consistently repair.
Do not label a formation universally good or bad. Its value depends on your squad, the mode and the behaviour you are testing. If the objective is to compare two shapes, keep the preset, squad and opponent conditions unchanged so that the formation is the main difference.

3. Set build-up style and defensive approach
After choosing the shape, select the build-up style and defensive approach that match your intended tempo and risk. Treat these as the team’s broad instructions; roles then refine what individual players do inside that structure. Make a note of both settings because Career Mode Tactical Vision checks can depend on them.
For a controlled experiment, change either the build-up style or the defensive approach, not both at once. If you alter both and the team behaves differently, you will not know which change caused the difference.
4. Assign roles and focuses deliberately
Open each position and choose a role that matches the player’s strengths and the space you need covered. FC 26’s newer roles have identifiable costs and benefits:
- Wide Back: a central defender who covers wide spaces. This can help protect the channels outside the centre-back pairing, but it changes how that defender responds to wide threats.
- Inverted Wingback: a fullback who moves into central positions while your team has the ball. The extra central presence can support circulation, while the wide lane must still be protected when possession changes.
- Box Crasher: a defensive midfielder who makes forward runs. EA specifically notes that this role is not focused on defensive actions and is slow to return to defensive duties, so the forward movement must be balanced by cover elsewhere.
- Ball-Playing Keeper: a goalkeeper who offers a passing option during build-up and stays on the line when defending. This may give you an additional outlet without turning the goalkeeper into an aggressive sweeper.
Use a Versatile focus where you want less restrictive behaviour, but do not treat it as a free upgrade. A less prescriptive role gives the player more room to interpret situations, which can make a movement harder to predict. If you need a repeatable defensive assignment, choose the more specific focus and test whether it creates the desired coverage.
Review the whole line after assigning a role. For example, an Inverted Wingback can add a central passing option, but you should check who occupies the vacated wide area. A Box Crasher can create a useful arrival in the penalty area, but another midfielder or defender must be able to protect the space during the recovery run.
5. Save and label the finished version
When the first draft is complete, save it as a tactics code. EA’s documented workflow is to manage the tactic in My Tactics and choose Save Code. To use a stored version, go to Use Code and choose Load Saved Code. The exact button symbols shown by the game can vary by platform, so use the labels in the current interface rather than assuming a universal keyboard or controller command.
FC 25 tactics codes are accepted in FC 26 and converted when applied. FC 26 codes include line height, can be saved or loaded, and work across Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies, according to EA. Conversion does not prove that every menu, role or gameplay behaviour is identical between versions; inspect the imported tactic and record any changed setting before testing.

Career Mode Tactical Vision has separate requirements
Do not confuse general tactic building with the requirements attached to a Career Mode Tactical Vision. EA lists the following required setting for each named vision:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Career Mode Tactical Vision | Required setting listed by EA |
|---|---|
| Possession | Close Support |
| Wing Play | Balanced or Counter |
| Counter Attack | Counter |
| Park The Bus | Deep |
| Kick & Rush | Balanced |
| High Pressing | High or Aggressive |
These are the settings EA associates with the relevant vision; the game does not require every vision to use both a particular build-up style and a particular defensive approach. Player roles are no longer Tactical Vision requirements. A familiar head coach can still improve a player’s role familiarity, but changing a role solely to satisfy a vision is not necessary under the current system.
If Career Mode does not recognise the vision you selected, check the listed build-up or defensive setting first. A role change will not fix a mismatch when the underlying requirement is the wrong team setting.
How to test whether a custom tactic works
EA’s official materials explain the settings and the intended behaviour of the systems, but they do not provide a controlled testing protocol, a performance threshold or independently measured results. The following method is a practical way to reduce guesswork; it is not an EA-validated formula.
Step 1: Save the baseline and define one hypothesis
Save the original code and write one sentence that can be observed in a match. “The Box Crasher should give me a forward option without leaving the centre unprotected” is testable. “This tactic should feel better” is too vague. Include the area of the pitch, the phase of play and the expected trade-off.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 2: Lock the conditions
Use the mode and gameplay preset in which you will actually play the tactic. Keep the formation, squad selection, opponent difficulty and other match conditions consistent between versions. Competitive and Authentic are designed for different experiences, so a result in one preset should not be presented as a result in the other.
Step 3: Change one setting
Change one role, focus, build-up style or defensive approach while leaving the rest of the tactic untouched. If you change a formation and several roles together, you are testing a package rather than a cause. Save the modified code with a clear name so that you can identify the exact version later.

Step 4: Play several comparable matches
Observe more than one match before drawing a conclusion. Look for the same situation repeatedly: the intended outlet appearing during build-up, the defensive line leaving the targeted channel exposed, or the expected support arriving during a transition. There is no official number of matches that proves success, and no source-supported win-rate percentage to use as a cutoff.
Step 5: Record behaviours, not just results
A win or loss can be influenced by finishing, individual errors and the opponent. Record the tactical events you can actually see.
| Observation | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Build-up outlet | Which player became available for the first or second pass, and whether the route was open. | Shows whether the formation and role assignment create the intended option. |
| Defensive coverage | Which zone was exposed after possession changed and which player recovered. | Reveals the cost of an aggressive movement or an inverted position. |
| Transition support | Whether nearby players arrived early enough to support the ball carrier. | Tests the connection between the broad team approach and individual focuses. |
| Role trade-off | How often the benefit appeared and what space or action was sacrificed. | Prevents a visually impressive movement from hiding a repeated defensive problem. |
Step 6: Keep, revert or isolate the change
After observing repeated patterns, keep the change only if it improves the behaviour that your hypothesis targeted without creating an unacceptable cost. If the result is unclear, reload the baseline and test the same change again under the same conditions. If the result is consistently negative, restore the saved code rather than layering another adjustment over it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare two tactics on the same axes
When comparing two complete tactics, use a fixed checklist instead of relying on reputation or a single match. The useful comparison axes are:
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Mode and preset | Are both versions being tested in the same mode with Competitive or Authentic selected consistently? |
| Defensive shape | Where are the centre, half-spaces and wide channels protected when the team loses the ball? |
| Build-up and defensive settings | Do the broad instructions support the tempo and risk level you intended? |
| Role and focus fit | Do the selected roles suit the players available, and is another player covering each aggressive movement? |
| Target behaviour | Which version produces the desired outlet, run, recovery or passing option more consistently? |
Keep the squad and test context stable, then change only the tactic. If you switch from Authentic Career gameplay to Competitive Ultimate Team gameplay halfway through the comparison, you have changed the experiment as well as the tactic.
Troubleshoot common problems by symptom
The team loses its wide protection
Inspect the formation and the roles occupying the outside channels. A central defender using Wide Back is specifically intended to cover wide spaces, while an Inverted Wingback moves inside in possession and may leave the flank dependent on another player. Test the role change by itself and watch the first transition after losing the ball.
A midfielder arrives forward but the centre is exposed
Check whether that midfielder is using Box Crasher. EA describes the role as forward-minded, not defence-focused and slow to return. Keep the role only if the additional run is worth the recovery problem in your intended mode; otherwise restore the baseline or test a less aggressive focus.

Build-up has no safe goalkeeper outlet
If your defenders are covered and the first pass repeatedly has no option, test Ball-Playing Keeper. The role is designed to provide a passing option during build-up while keeping the goalkeeper on the line when defending. Record whether the new outlet actually appears before changing another position.
The imported code does not look identical
FC 25 codes are converted when loaded into FC 26. Check the formation, line height, build-up style, defensive approach and roles after conversion. Save the converted version as a new code so you do not overwrite the original reference.
A Tactical Suggestion changes the team’s behaviour unexpectedly
Suggestions preserve the existing formation but can alter the instructions around it. Treat the suggestion as a baseline, save it, and compare it with your previous code under the same conditions. Its adaptation to your team is a convenience, not a guarantee of superior results.

The tactic works in one mode but not another
First check the gameplay preset. Competitive is tuned for head-to-head Ultimate Team and Clubs, including faster passing and more direct control, while Authentic is intended to feel more true to football in modes such as Career. Retest the tactic in the mode and preset where you plan to use it instead of assuming that the settings transfer unchanged.
Career Mode rejects the selected Tactical Vision
Match the vision to the requirement in the table above. For example, Counter Attack requires Counter, Park The Bus requires Deep, and High Pressing accepts High or Aggressive. Player roles are not the requirement under FC 26’s current Career Mode system.
A worked example of a controlled experiment
Suppose your objective is to create a late midfield runner while keeping the defensive centre intact. Start by saving the existing code and writing down the current line height, formation and defensive approach. Assign Box Crasher to the chosen defensive midfielder and leave every other setting unchanged. In several matches using the same mode, preset, squad and opponent conditions, record when the midfielder reaches the attack, who covers the central space during the run and how quickly the player returns after possession is lost.
If the runs appear but the centre is repeatedly open, that is not a failed observation; it is the role’s trade-off. You can either accept the risk for the way you play or revert the code and test a less aggressive role or focus. Do not change the formation, goalkeeper role and defensive approach in the same trial, because you would no longer know whether Box Crasher caused the observed difference.

EA’s FC 26 gameplay and Career Mode materials establish how the menus, presets, roles, focuses, codes and Tactical Vision requirements are intended to work. They do not establish that a named formation has the highest win rate, that a role improves results by a particular percentage, or that one code is best for every squad. No official statistic in the available material validates a universal success threshold.
Your own observations are therefore context-specific. A tactic that creates useful width for one squad may expose a different weakness when the available players lack the pace or positioning to cover it. State the mode, preset and squad whenever you share a conclusion, and treat the result as a repeatable observation rather than a guarantee for every player.
The standard for a finished custom tactic
A finished tactic is not the one with the most attacking roles or the most impressive code. It is the version that repeatedly produces the behaviour you intended in the mode and preset where you will use it, while making a trade-off you understand and can defend. Save that version, keep the baseline code alongside it, and change one variable whenever the next match exposes a problem.
