Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Gears of War: E-Day began stuttering, loading assets late, losing frame rate or crashing after you installed a mod, first prove whether the mod is involved: remove it with the author’s documented uninstall method, reproduce the same scene with identical settings, and then add changes back one at a time. This clean-baseline test separates a mod conflict from a game update, graphics setting, storage device, driver or hardware bottleneck.
The steps below cover the launch game’s documented caveats, beta-era hardware guidance (clearly labeled), Unreal Engine GPU-crash evidence collection and a repeatable way to report a problem without guessing.

Identify exactly what “poor performance” means
Do not treat every visual problem as an FPS problem. Write down the symptom, when it appears and whether it started immediately after a mod, a game update or a driver change. The distinction determines which test is useful.
- Consistently low frame rate: the counter remains below your target even in a repeatable scene. This usually points toward a sustained CPU, GPU, memory or graphics-setting limit.
- Intermittent stutter: frame time spikes while average FPS may look acceptable. Shader compilation, asset streaming, a mod conflict, background activity or storage latency can all produce this pattern.
- Asset pop-in or missing assets: geometry, textures or effects appear late or remain absent. Storage and file integrity deserve attention before changing visual quality.
- Long loading: measure the same transition twice. A one-off first load is not comparable with a repeat load.
- Hard freeze or crash: record whether the game closes, becomes unresponsive, returns to the desktop or reboots the system. GPU-removal errors require different evidence from a script or content error.
- Online latency: ping, packet loss and server conditions are network issues, not proof of a rendering-performance problem. Test offline or in a repeatable solo scene when diagnosing the mod.
Record your GPU and CPU models, installed RAM, storage type, operating-system version, game build, graphics-driver version, resolution, preset, upscaler, frame cap, every enabled mod and each mod’s version. Also note the exact scene, game mode and whether the issue began after an update. This log prevents a setting change from being mistaken for a mod result.

Run a clean-baseline experiment
A controlled comparison is more reliable than a subjective before-and-after impression. Keep the scene, camera route, resolution, preset, upscaler and frame cap constant. Capture average FPS and frame-time consistency, CPU and GPU utilization, temperatures, loading behavior and crash frequency for each run.
- Save your current configuration. Take screenshots of graphics settings and make a list of mod names, versions and installation dates. If a mod replaces a configuration file, keep a copy only if its author permits that workflow.
- Disable or remove the newest mod first. Use that mod’s documented uninstall method rather than deleting random files. Restart the game and reproduce the same scene for the same length of time.
- Compare like for like. Use the same resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, frame cap, game mode and camera path. A different checkpoint or a freshly compiled shader cache can invalidate the comparison.
- Classify the result. If the clean run restores performance, the mod or its interaction with another change is implicated. If nothing changes, continue with settings, storage, drivers and hardware checks instead of assuming the mod is guilty.
- Re-enable one change at a time. Test one mod, then the next, without stacking several new files between runs. The first change that reproduces the symptom is your best lead.
This procedure establishes correlation; it does not prove that a particular mod is universally unsafe. Different game builds, hardware and mod versions can behave differently.
Do not stack Engine.ini “optimizations” blindly
The author of the Ultimate Engine Tweaks file on Nexus Mods explicitly says not to mix that file with other optimization mods and advises deleting the file if performance becomes worse. Follow that as the author’s compatibility instruction, not as independent evidence that the tweak improves performance on your system. The author’s notes are at Nexus Mods.
If two mods edit the same Unreal configuration key, the last file loaded may silently override the other. A clean baseline followed by one-file-at-a-time testing is safer than trying to merge unknown values.

Check in-game graphics modes before editing files
The official support material documents graphics-mode choices that trade higher frame rate for higher image quality in Campaign, Horde Siege and Versus. Open the game’s Settings menu and test the relevant mode there first; no single mode or setting is established as best for every PC. The support hub is Gears of War Support.
- Set the mode and graphics preset you normally use.
- Choose a conservative frame cap that your system can sustain instead of an uncapped target that constantly oscillates.
- Change one option at a time and repeat the same scene. Record frame-time behavior, not just the headline FPS number.
- Only after the built-in options are understood should you test a configuration-file mod. Keep a copy of the working, unmodified state so you can return to it.
When comparing a modded and clean run, include the upscaler and any generated-frame setting in your notes. Two runs at the same nominal resolution can have very different workloads if those options differ.
Use the right hardware and storage checks
Mechanical hard drives: beta-era warning, not a launch guarantee
The official Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Details & FAQ says HDD installation was unsupported during the beta and could cause severe loading issues, missing assets, stuttering and crashes. That document is dated August 3, 2026 and is beta-specific; it is not a confirmed statement that the launch version requires an SSD or that an SSD cures every mod-related problem. If your installation is still on a mechanical HDD and your symptoms match those listed, moving the game to an internal NVMe SSD is a reasonable conditional test, not a guaranteed performance upgrade. Read the qualification in the official beta FAQ.
After moving the installation, repeat the identical scene and settings. If asset pop-in and loading stalls disappear while GPU and CPU behavior remains similar, storage latency was likely part of the symptom. If frame-time spikes remain, continue the other branches instead of buying hardware based only on the HDD note.

Intel Arc A580 or B580: apply the BIOS check only to these GPUs
The same beta FAQ specifically advises owners of Intel Arc A580 and B580 cards who report poor performance to verify that Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding are enabled in firmware. This is targeted guidance for those two GPU models, not a universal E-Day requirement. Enter your motherboard’s UEFI/BIOS, confirm both options, save and reboot, then repeat the baseline test. If you do not own an A580 or B580, this check is not the appropriate explanation for your result.
Interpret utilization instead of chasing a single percentage
Tom’s Hardware tested 25 CPUs and described E-Day gameplay in its test systems as using roughly 80% to 90% CPU utilization. Those readings belong to the outlet’s hardware, settings and methodology; they are not a guaranteed value for every player. A CPU-limited run can show one or more busy cores while total CPU usage looks moderate, whereas a GPU-limited run usually keeps the GPU near its sustained limit. Log utilization and temperatures during the same scene before deciding which component needs attention.
Understand the CPU results without treating them as a promise
In Tom’s Hardware’s October 1, 2026 benchmark, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D was reported at 42% higher performance than a Ryzen 5 7600X at 1080p High. The publication tested a pool of 25 CPUs. That percentage is a result of its specific test systems and methodology, not a universal prediction for your resolution, preset, mod list or frame-time target. Use it as context for investigating a CPU limit, not as a reason to replace a processor before measuring your own system. The full methodology and results are at Tom’s Hardware.
If lowering resolution produces little or no FPS gain while a few CPU threads remain busy, test a lower CPU-heavy setting or frame cap and compare frame times. If lowering resolution produces a large gain and GPU utilization falls, the GPU is more likely to be the limit. These are diagnostic patterns, not published guarantees about a particular processor.

When the game crashes, collect evidence before changing more variables
Epic’s general Unreal Engine guidance recommends checking the latest log for DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED or another explicit error code, verifying the latest driver from your GPU manufacturer and recording reproducible steps. Apply this as engine-level triage, not as a confirmed E-Day-specific fix. The guidance is available in Epic’s Unreal Engine GPU-crash documentation.
- Reproduce the crash with the clean baseline if possible. Note the map, checkpoint, action immediately before the crash and approximate time.
- Save the latest log before launching repeatedly and overwriting useful evidence. Copy the exact error code and surrounding lines; do not paraphrase it.
- Record the installed GPU-driver version and check the GPU manufacturer’s current driver release. A driver update is a controlled change only if you retest the same scene afterward.
- Test the mod alone, without unrelated graphics-file edits. If the crash disappears only when one mod is removed, report that reproducible sequence to the mod author.
- If the clean game also crashes, include the clean-run result when contacting official support. It prevents a mod from being blamed for an engine, driver or hardware fault.
A device-removed error can have several causes, including driver timeout or resource pressure; the code identifies a line of investigation, not a single cure.
Account for launch-version caveats
Uninterrupted campaign sessions can create memory issues
The September 30 launch article says that playing the entire campaign without reloading checkpoints or restarting may cause memory issues. When reproducing a long-session stutter or crash, note whether you have been playing continuously and whether a restart changes the symptom. Do not attribute a problem to a mod until you have compared an equally long clean session. The launch article is “Emergence Begins – Tomorrow”.

Benchmark overlays may undercount generated frames
The same launch information warns that benchmark-overlay FPS can undercount because generated frames are excluded. If an overlay disagrees with the game’s presentation, record whether generated frames are enabled and use the same measurement method for every comparison. Frame-time consistency and repeatable gameplay behavior matter more than comparing two counters that count different frame types.

Read patch notes as scope, not a guarantee
The October 5 patch notes list general stability, performance, hardware-compatibility and reporting improvements. They do not promise that every player’s mod conflict or crash is resolved. Check your installed build, retest the clean baseline after updating and then reintroduce mods one at a time. Consult the October 5 patch notes for the stated scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare two runs with a diagnostic worksheet
Use a table or spreadsheet so every variable is visible. A useful comparison contains these fields:
| Field | Clean baseline | Modded run | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game build and driver | Exact versions | Exact versions | A patch or driver can be the real change. |
| Mod list | None | Name and version of each mod | Identifies the first change that reproduces the issue. |
| Scene and duration | Same checkpoint and route | Same checkpoint and route | Controls for different workloads and shader state. |
| Resolution, preset, upscaler and cap | Record each value | Record each value | Prevents an option change from masquerading as a mod effect. |
| Average FPS and frame-time spikes | Measured with one method | Measured with the same method | Stutter is a frame-time problem, not only an average-FPS problem. |
| CPU/GPU utilization and temperature | Log during the scene | Log during the scene | Shows whether the bottleneck moved. |
| Storage and asset loading | Drive type; loading behavior | Drive type; loading behavior | Separates streaming symptoms from rendering limits. |
| Crash behavior and log code | Stable or exact error | Stable or exact error | Turns a report into a reproducible technical case. |
Change one row at a time whenever possible. If you change the driver, storage location and mod list together, you will not know which change mattered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical decision tree
- Does removing the newest mod restore performance? Keep the clean baseline, then test that mod by itself. Check its version against your game build and follow the author’s uninstall or compatibility notes.
- Does the issue remain with every mod removed? Test built-in graphics modes, frame cap, upscaler, driver and hardware utilization. The mod is not established as the cause.
- Are missing assets, severe loading delays or streaming stutters dominant? If the game is on a mechanical HDD, treat the beta FAQ’s warning as a relevant lead and test an internal NVMe SSD. Keep the beta qualification in your report.
- Is the GPU an Intel Arc A580 or B580? Verify Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding in UEFI/BIOS, then retest. Do not generalize this branch to other GPUs.
- Is there a hard crash? Capture the latest log, exact error code, driver version and reproduction steps. Compare clean and modded runs before adding more tweaks.
- Does it happen only after a very long uninterrupted campaign? Include restart/checkpoint behavior in the report because the launch article documents a memory caveat.
- Do only benchmark numbers look wrong? Check whether generated frames are enabled; the launch overlay may exclude them. Use one consistent counter for comparisons.
How to report a mod-related performance problem
A useful report lets another person reproduce the same state. Include:
- Game edition, build number and date of the last game update.
- CPU, GPU, RAM, storage drive type and operating-system version.
- GPU-driver version and whether Resizable BAR/Above 4G Decoding were checked (only relevant to the Arc A580/B580 branch).
- Resolution, preset, graphics mode, upscaler, generated-frame setting and frame cap.
- Every mod name, version, installation order and the documented uninstall method used.
- The exact scene, checkpoint, actions, test duration and whether a restart or checkpoint reload changes the result.
- Clean-versus-modded FPS or frame-time observations, utilization and temperatures.
- The complete crash error code and the latest-log excerpt when a crash occurs.
Avoid saying that a mod “causes” stutter based on one uncontrolled run. State what changed, what stayed constant and whether the clean baseline reproduced the symptom. Windows Central has reported mods that claimed performance gains while noting that its writer had not tested them; treat such claims as unverified rather than as fixes. Its coverage is Windows Central.
What not to do
- Do not install several optimization files simultaneously and then infer which one helped.
- Do not use a different scene, resolution or frame cap for the “before” run.
- Do not treat a beta-era HDD warning as proof of a current launch requirement.
- Do not apply the Arc-specific firmware check to unrelated GPUs.
- Do not replace a CPU or GPU before measuring whether the run is CPU-limited, GPU-limited or storage-bound.
- Do not rely on a benchmark overlay without checking how it counts generated frames.
- Do not report a crash without the error code, driver version and reproducible steps when those are available.
When the evidence points away from the mod
If the clean and modded runs have the same frame-time spikes, the same loading behavior and the same crash, the mod has not been shown to be the cause. Focus on the branch that matches the evidence: graphics-mode testing for a sustained limit, storage testing for asset streaming, targeted Arc firmware checks for A580/B580 systems, driver and log collection for GPU crashes, or session-length testing for the documented campaign memory caveat. Reintroduce the mod only after the unmodified game is stable, and keep the working baseline available for future patches.
