For current AOSP development, plan on a 64-bit VPS with at least 64 GB of RAM and 400 GB of free persistent disk. A flashable ROM for a particular phone or tablet also needs a compatible device tree, kernel, vendor blobs, and the exact branch-specific tools documented by that ROM project. Identify the device codename and ROM branch before provisioning the server or copying any commands.

What an Ubuntu VPS can build
Android ROM building is a Linux command-line workload, so a remote Ubuntu server can host the complete checkout and compilation. You connect over SSH, synchronize the source repositories, select a product, and leave the build running in a persistent terminal session. The VPS does not need a graphical desktop.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
There are two materially different targets:
- AOSP: Google’s platform source and generic build system. It is the right starting point for platform development, framework work, and learning the Android build process.
- A device-oriented ROM such as LineageOS: a project tree plus device-specific manifests, a device tree, kernel source, proprietary vendor files, and target-specific commands. This is the relevant route when you want an image that can be flashed to a named phone or tablet.
A successful AOSP compilation does not automatically produce a usable image for your phone. Hardware support is determined by the device repositories and blobs for that model, not by the VPS provider.
Choose the branch and device before choosing the VPS
Write down the exact Android or ROM branch and the device codename first. Branches change, and a codename is not the same thing as a retail model name. The ROM project’s device page is authoritative for supported branches, package requirements, Java and Python versions, proprietary-file extraction, and any prerequisite such as an already installed matching build.

- For a generic platform checkout, select the AOSP release branch you intend to study or modify.
- For a flashable device build, verify that the device is officially supported on the chosen LineageOS branch and copy its codename exactly.
- Do not mix a device tree from one branch with a manifest from another unless the device documentation explicitly instructs you to do so.
This decision controls the required disk layout, JDK and Python versions, repository set, and the commands that follow. When a guide says a combination is unsupported, a larger VPS will not fix the incompatibility.
VPS sizing for current AOSP builds
Current AOSP requirements call for a 64-bit x86 environment, at least 400 GB of free disk space, and at least 64 GB of RAM. The 400 GB figure is approximately 250 GB for checking out the source and 150 GB for building it. Mirrors, multiple branches, multiple devices, build artifacts, and caches require additional capacity.
| Resource | Practical baseline | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Use as many sustained-performance cores as the budget allows; tune build jobs to the actual VPS. | Compilation parallelism reduces elapsed time, but excessive jobs increase memory pressure. |
| Memory | 64 GB RAM for current AOSP guidance. | Large C++ and Java compilations can exhaust smaller instances and force swapping. |
| Disk | 400 GB free for one current AOSP checkout and build. | The checkout, out/ products, temporary files, and caches compete for space. |
| Architecture | 64-bit x86 Linux. | Modern Android branches require a 64-bit build environment. |
| Storage type | Persistent block storage with enough I/O performance for repository and build workloads. | An ephemeral disk can erase a long checkout or build when the instance stops. |
Google reports using 72-core machines with 64 GB of RAM and about 40 minutes for a full build on that configuration. That is Google’s reference hardware, not a promise for a VPS: provider CPU models, storage latency, network throughput, virtualization, branch, and device all change the result. Treat the 40-minute figure as a scale reference rather than a schedule.
You may encounter an older AOSP virtual-machine page that lists 16 GB of RAM or swap and 30 GB of disk. Those numbers describe old branches and much smaller source trees. They are not appropriate sizing for Android 11 or later or for a current release.
Prepare Ubuntu and the remote account
For Android 11 and later, AOSP says to use Ubuntu 18.04 or later. A current 64-bit Ubuntu LTS is usually the simplest starting point, but the ROM branch’s guide takes precedence if it names a narrower release.
- Create a non-root build account and attach persistent block storage. Keep source, output, and logs on that volume rather than on a temporary boot disk.
- Configure SSH keys, disable password-only access where your provider permits it, and apply security updates before starting the checkout.
- Open a persistent terminal session with
tmuxorscreen. An SSH disconnect should not terminate a multi-hour synchronization or build. - Check storage before each large operation. A volume that is large enough for the checkout alone may still fail when
out/and ccache are populated.
These are operational practices for a remote build host. They do not replace the ROM project’s documented prerequisites.

Install the AOSP host packages
Install the package set from the versioned AOSP instructions rather than from an old blog post. On Ubuntu, run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git-core gnupg flex bison build-essential zip curl
zlib1g-dev libc6-dev-i386 x11proto-core-dev libx11-dev lib32z1-dev
libgl1-mesa-dev libxml2-utils xsltproc unzip fontconfig
Package names and additional tools can change with the branch. A device-oriented project normally requires more than this baseline: its guide may add bc, ccache, git-lfs, image and filesystem utilities, protobuf tooling, rsync, schedtool, squashfs-tools, xxd, and other multilib libraries.
Java and Python are also branch-specific. Do not assume that the version installed by your Ubuntu release is correct. For example, LineageOS 18.1 and later uses the OpenJDK 11 copy included with its source download, while older branches can require different JDK and Python combinations. Follow the branch guide and verify the selected executables before invoking the build.
Fetch and prepare AOSP
The current AOSP getting-started sequence uses Google’s repo tool and the android-latest-release manifest branch:
mkdir -p ~/aosp && cd ~/aosp
repo init --partial-clone -b android-latest-release
-u https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest
repo sync -c -j8
source build/envsetup.sh
- When
repo initasks, set a Git name and email that identify your commits. They do not need to be the identity of the VPS account. - Use the manifest URL exactly as shown: https://android.googlesource.com/platform/manifest.
- Let
repo synccomplete before changing branches or starting a build. The-coption checks out the current manifest’s branches, and-j8is an example of synchronization parallelism, not a universal optimum. - Adjust
-jto the VPS’s CPU, memory, and network behavior. More download jobs can raise RAM use and trigger provider throttling. - Run
source build/envsetup.shin every new shell that will use Android build commands.
Pin a known release branch for reproducible work instead of silently following a moving branch. Record the manifest revision, local patches, tool versions, and build logs with the project.
Build a device ROM with LineageOS
For a LineageOS device build, begin at the official build page for the exact codename. It determines whether the device is supported, which branch to use, how to obtain proprietary files, and whether a matching LineageOS installation is required.

The normal repository setup has this shape:
mkdir -p ~/android/lineage
cd ~/android/lineage
repo init -u https://github.com/LineageOS/android.git
-b <lineage-branch> --git-lfs --no-clone-bundle
repo sync
source build/envsetup.sh
breakfast <device-codename>
brunch <device-codename>
The placeholders are deliberately not universal values. Replace <lineage-branch> and <device-codename> only with the branch and codename printed by the device documentation. The manifest URL is https://github.com/LineageOS/android.git.
What each command does
repo initselects the LineageOS manifest and branch.--git-lfsenables large-file support used by the project;--no-clone-bundlefollows the current setup shape.repo syncdownloads the manifest’s repositories. It can require substantial temporary space in addition to the final checkout.breakfastprepares device-specific repositories and configuration after the environment has been loaded.brunchselects the device target and starts the build, writing products beneath the tree’s output directory.
Proprietary files and device preparation
A device tree may refer to firmware or vendor blobs that are not in the public source tree. Follow the extraction instructions for that device and branch; do not substitute blobs from a different model or release. Some targets require that a matching LineageOS build already be installed so extraction tools can read the expected partitions. If breakfast cannot find a device, first verify the codename and branch against the official page rather than repeatedly retrying the command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use ccache without running out of disk
Compiler caching can make subsequent builds much faster after the first complete build. LineageOS documents this configuration:
export USE_CCACHE=1
export CCACHE_EXEC=/usr/bin/ccache
ccache -M 50G
Place the exports in ~/.bashrc if every interactive build shell should use the cache, then reload the shell or source the file. A practical allocation is roughly 25–50 GB for one device and 75–100 GB when building several devices with distinct kernels. Those are cache-sizing suggestions, not additional RAM requirements.
Cache space is permanently reserved on the volume until you reduce or clear it. Include the limit in the 400 GB calculation, monitor free space, and remember that a cache does not eliminate the need for the full source tree and current out/ directory. Compression can reduce disk consumption, but may trade storage savings for CPU time and slower cache access.

Tune synchronization and build parallelism
There are two separate concurrency decisions: repository synchronization and compilation. The AOSP example uses repo sync -c -j8; LineageOS’s basic sequence leaves the sync job count at its default. Start conservatively, observe CPU, RAM, swap, and I/O, then increase concurrency in small steps.

- If memory remains plentiful and CPUs are idle, raise the job count gradually.
- If the VPS begins swapping, reduce jobs immediately; swapping can make a build slower and destabilize the instance.
- Do not infer a safe value from the number of virtual CPUs alone. Provider oversubscription and memory bandwidth affect the result.
- Keep enough disk headroom for temporary objects and logs while a build is running.
A build that completes reliably with fewer jobs is more useful than a nominally faster setting that repeatedly dies from an out-of-memory condition.
Keep a VPS build recoverable
Remote compilation is vulnerable to SSH drops, provider maintenance, and accidental shell closure. Use tmux or screen, and reconnect to the same session after an interruption. A completed repo sync can normally be reused; rerun the build command after checking the log and available disk.
Back up the manifest revision, local commits, device configuration changes, extraction scripts, and build logs outside the VPS. A persistent disk protects against a reboot, not against deletion of the instance or corruption of the volume. Avoid editing generated files in out/ as a substitute for fixing the source or device tree, because generated output can be removed on a clean build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot the failures that matter most
Disk exhaustion during sync or compilation
Check the volume before retrying. The checkout, out/, temporary build files, and ccache all consume the same space. Remove obsolete output or reduce the cache only after preserving anything needed for debugging. If multiple branches or devices are required, expand the persistent volume rather than repeatedly deleting a working tree.
breakfast cannot find the target
This usually indicates a wrong codename, an unsupported branch/device combination, or an incomplete sync. Compare both values with the device page, source the environment again, and rerun synchronization. A larger VPS cannot make an unsupported target appear.
JDK or Python errors
Use the versions named by the branch guide, including the project’s bundled JDK when required. Check which java and python binaries the build shell resolves before launching a long compile. Installing a newer system version can break an older branch even when the package installation itself succeeds.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Missing proprietary files
Read the target’s extraction procedure and obtain blobs from the specified matching source. A public device tree can compile partway and still fail when a required vendor file is absent. Do not copy a similarly named file from another device.
Out-of-memory kills or heavy swapping
Lower compilation parallelism, stop unrelated services, and verify that the VPS really has the advertised memory. Swap can prevent an immediate crash but is not a replacement for the 64 GB current AOSP baseline.
SSH disconnects or provider interruption
Run the sync and build inside tmux or screen, reconnect to inspect progress, and keep manifests and logs backed up. If the provider terminates an instance with ephemeral storage, uncommitted work on that disk is not recoverable.
AOSP or a device ROM: which path fits the goal?
| Decision point | Generic AOSP | LineageOS device build |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Platform development, framework changes, and generic Android builds. | A flashable image for a supported phone or tablet. |
| Source and manifest | AOSP platform manifest and release branch. | ROM-project manifest plus device, kernel, and vendor repositories. |
| Hardware support | Not automatically tied to a retail device. | Requires an officially supported codename and matching repositories/blobs. |
| Java/Python and packages | Use the selected AOSP branch’s requirements. | Device and branch guides can add packages and pin different JDK/Python versions. |
| Storage and memory | Current baseline is 400 GB free disk and 64 GB RAM. | At least the same order of magnitude, plus device repositories, output, and ccache. |
| Reproducibility | Record the manifest revision and local changes. | Also record device tree, kernel, vendor extraction, blobs, and target branch. |
| Update cadence | Follows AOSP release and manifest changes. | Depends on the ROM project’s branch and each device maintainer’s support. |
Choose AOSP when the work is platform-oriented. Choose the LineageOS workflow when the deliverable is a build for a named device. In both cases, the VPS is only the build host; source compatibility and device support determine whether the result is usable.
A repeatable build checklist
- Confirm the 64-bit architecture, Ubuntu version, branch, and device codename.
- Reserve at least 400 GB of free persistent disk and 64 GB of RAM for current AOSP-scale work; add room for extra devices, mirrors, and ccache.
- Install the branch-specific package, JDK, and Python requirements.
- Initialize and synchronize the correct manifest.
- Load
build/envsetup.shin the active shell. - For a device build, run the documented preparation and proprietary-file extraction steps before
breakfast. - Start with conservative
-jvalues and monitor memory, swap, I/O, and free space. - Run long operations in
tmuxorscreen. - Record revisions, patches, tool versions, logs, and output checksums so another VPS can reproduce the result.
With those controls in place, an Ubuntu VPS is a practical remote workstation for AOSP or a supported device ROM. The limiting factors are normally storage, memory, branch/device alignment, and vendor dependencies—not the absence of a local desktop.
