Valheim’s Deep North is available in version 1.0, released September 9, 2026. For a server group, the practical route begins after the Ashlands: establish a northern foothold, investigate village ruins for Hidden Tunnels, use tunnel moulds to make Intricate Keys, unlock Morkhalla, and complete the required raid-and-blood loop before summoning Kall Fimbulbringer. Iron Gate’s official launch message puts it plainly: “The time has come to finally venture into the Deep North and Valheim 1.0.”
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
This guide focuses on cooperative planning rather than undocumented damage numbers or drop rates. Those values can change as 1.0 is balanced, so your group should treat the route and logistics as the stable framework and verify combat details in the current game build.

What the Deep North release changes for a server
The Deep North arrives as part of Valheim 1.0, not as a small regional patch. Iron Gate’s abbreviated release notes describe a substantial content expansion:
| Content category | Amount announced for 1.0 |
|---|---|
| Weapons | 40+ |
| Creatures | 10+ |
| Buildable pieces | 80+ |
| Crafting materials | 30+ |
| Food items | 20+ |
| Armor sets | 4 |
| Capes | 2 |
| Trinkets | 2 |
The same notes mention new tools, locations, music, events, mechanics, upgradeable pockets, and achievements. On a shared world, that scale affects storage and production before it affects combat. A group that arrives with one personal chest and a single workbench will spend its first session sorting materials instead of exploring.
Reserve labeled communal storage, extra portal materials, food-production capacity, and workshop room before the expedition. Keep progression-critical items together and record who is carrying each key or summoning component. A server can lose hours when an item is left in an individual base, a player logs out, and nobody remembers where the next gate item went.
When your group can enter
Current progression coverage places the Deep North after the Ashlands. That makes it an endgame destination for a continuing character, not a starting biome for a fresh server. The official release announcements confirm the 1.0 launch and broad content scope, but they do not publish a universal migration matrix for every pre-1.0 world. Existing servers should therefore be checked against the version-specific world and server behavior before making a permanent move.

| Decision factor | Fresh 1.0 world | Established server |
|---|---|---|
| Endgame gear and food | The group earns the progression together and must rebuild its production chain. | Stored equipment, recipes, and food can shorten the preparation phase. |
| Portals and communal storage | Every portal, chest, and workshop must be planned from the beginning. | Existing infrastructure can support a remote northern outpost. |
| Discovery style | Everyone encounters the progression gates at the same pace. | Veterans may know the route while newer characters catch up. |
| Tolerance for post-launch changes | The world starts on the 1.0 ruleset. | Players should confirm how the current build treats older world data before committing to a migration. |
Do not assume that a character’s unlocked recipes or a pre-1.0 map automatically provides every Deep North requirement. The safest server policy is to make a backup, test the world on the current build, and agree whether the group is preserving the old settlement or starting a dedicated 1.0 map.
Prepare a cooperative expedition
Build a safe portal and supply camp
- Choose a staging location outside the first village ruin. Keep the camp close enough for short supply runs but far enough that an unexpected fight does not destroy every bed and chest at once.
- Place and name a portal before exploring. Use a name that describes its job and location, such as a northern staging label your whole group recognizes. Avoid renaming it while another player is travelling.
- Add a second route for recovery. A backup portal or a clearly marked return path prevents one destroyed connection from isolating the team. Keep the materials for rebuilding a portal in the communal chest.
- Separate progression storage from expendable supplies. Keys, moulds, and blood should have a dedicated chest. Food, arrows, building materials, and repair components can be replenished without risking the items that unlock the next step.
Reserve food, repairs, and inventory
Twenty or more new food items are part of the 1.0 content scale, but the available notes do not establish which recipes are optimal for Deep North combat. Bring the best food your current progression supports, then test new recipes safely at the camp rather than making the first tasting during a raid. Carry enough meals for the travel out, the search, and an unplanned recovery trip.

- Use separate personal packs for combat consumables and shared packs for moulds, keys, and blood.
- Record the owner and location of every progression item on a sign or shared server note.
- Agree on a retreat signal and a rally point before entering an underground route.
Assign server roles
Roles reduce confusion when several players discover a gate item at once. They do not require fixed classes; rotate them when the group composition changes.

Find a Deep North village ruin
Village ruins are the first reliable investigation target in the reported server progression. Do not dismantle every building immediately. Large two-story structures deserve a deliberate search because they can contain pits leading to Hidden Tunnels.
- Survey from the outside. Mark the ruin on the map and clear enough space for a retreat. Note nearby terrain that could block a portal or cart route.
- Inspect large two-story buildings first. Check floors, corners, and interior openings for a pit. A pit is the visual clue that the building connects to a Hidden Tunnel.
- Secure the entrance. Place lighting and temporary protection near the opening, then give the scout time to check the first section. Keep the camp portal available rather than carrying every supply underground.
- Mark every searched structure. A sign or map marker prevents repeated searches when the group returns with a different character.
The notes do not establish a fixed village count, ruin spacing, or tunnel-generation rule. Treat each ruin as an exploration site rather than assuming that every two-story building has the same interior.
Hidden Tunnels: moulds and Intricate Keys
Hidden Tunnels contain moulds used to make Intricate Keys or gear upgrades. The key is the progression item that turns the village search into access to Morkhalla, so mould handling should be deliberate.
Underground operating procedure
- Enter as a complete group when possible. A player who falls alone may not be able to recover the mould or retrieve the body safely.
- Clear and mark one segment at a time. Use signs, torches, or map notes so the team can distinguish a searched branch from an unexplored one.
- Move moulds to the shared inventory immediately. Do not split them among personal chests while the route is still incomplete.
- Return to the camp before crafting if the tunnel is unstable. The key is more valuable than one extra room of loot; a safe workshop gives the group a controlled place to make it.
- Record the key holder. If the player carrying an Intricate Key disconnects, the group should still know whether the item is in a chest, on a corpse, or in another expedition pack.
Exact mould quantities, crafting costs, and upgrade statistics are not established in the available authoritative material. Use the current in-game recipe and do not rely on an old community spreadsheet after a balance update.

Open Morkhalla and organize the raid loop
Once the group has an Intricate Key, it can open Morkhalla. The reported boss route requires repeating the raid-and-blood process three times to collect enough Jotun raids and Malicious Blood for the summon. The practical goal is not simply to enter Morkhalla once; it is to complete three controlled cycles without losing the progression items.
Cycle checklist
- Bring the key to the Morkhalla entrance. Keep the key holder with at least one escort and leave a portal route available.
- Open Morkhalla and identify the next raid objective. Record the location and any useful landmarks before the group disperses.
- Complete the Jotun raid. Keep the fight near a prepared retreat path rather than chasing enemies into unknown terrain.
- Collect Malicious Blood. Transfer it to the quartermaster or a marked communal chest as soon as the area is safe.
- Reset supplies and repair. Count food, portal materials, and weapons before starting the next cycle.
- Repeat until the group has completed three cycles. The recorder should mark each finished raid and the current blood total.
The available guidance does not establish raid frequency, enemy statistics, blood drop rates, or server configuration keys. Do not promise a fixed number of enemies or a guaranteed timetable to newer players; explain that the three-cycle requirement is the reported progression route and that exact values may change with updates.
Summon Kall Fimbulbringer at the Strange Bowl
After the three raid cycles, take the accumulated Malicious Blood to the Strange Bowl. The reported summon requires offering three Malicious Blood. Make the final attempt a scheduled server event rather than an accidental click by one player.
Boss-day procedure
- Announce a preparation window. Give every participant time to repair, eat, empty unnecessary inventory, and set a respawn point at the northern camp.
- Verify the communal chest. The recorder confirms the Intricate Key history, the completed raid count, and three Malicious Blood ready for the Strange Bowl.
- Choose the arena approach. Decide where players will rally, where they will retreat, and who will retrieve bodies if someone falls.
- Offer the three Malicious Blood together. Have the quartermaster perform the interaction while the rest of the group is present and ready.
- Keep the fight coordinated. Use the agreed retreat call and avoid splitting the party across the arena.
No authoritative combat values, attack patterns, or guaranteed loot table are established here, so the group should inspect the current in-game information and adapt its equipment rather than treating an old boss guide as permanent.

How to use 1.0’s new content without overloading the server
More than 80 buildable pieces and over 30 crafting materials can quickly turn a communal base into an unlabelled warehouse. Create a storage policy before the first Deep North haul.

- Use dedicated chest rows: one row for raw materials, one for processed components, one for food ingredients, and one for progression items.
- Reserve a “new 1.0” zone: keep unfamiliar materials together until the group confirms their recipes and upgrade uses.
- Leave workshop expansion space: new tools and gear may require stations or upgrades that are not part of the old base layout.
- Track pocket upgrades: 1.0 adds upgradeable pockets; record who has upgraded capacity and avoid assuming every character can carry the same load.
- Schedule sorting sessions: one player can label and consolidate chests while the expedition team continues scouting.
These measures matter more on a server with several time zones. A player logging in alone should be able to find the portal materials, food, repair station, and progression chest without asking who moved them.

Choose a fresh 1.0 world when
- The group wants every player to discover the Deep North route together.
- You want the 1.0 crafting, food, building, and achievement systems introduced in one continuous progression.
- Your existing map has inconsistent version history or uncertain backups.
- The team accepts rebuilding portals, storage, workshops, and food production.
Continue an established server when
- The group already has reliable endgame food, gear, portal links, and a communal base.
- Players prefer spending their first 1.0 session on exploration instead of replacing infrastructure.
- You have a verified backup and have tested the world on the current server and client versions.
- The group agrees that post-launch balance or content changes may require adjustments to the old settlement.
Iron Gate’s FAQ says the studio does not maintain a fixed public roadmap and prefers flexibility while iterating on biomes, enemies, and resources. It records Deep North pre-production from May to October 2024. Date-stamp your server instructions, especially portal maps and boss checklists, so returning players know which build they describe.

Common server failures and recovery plans
The group cannot find a tunnel
Return to the marked village map and inspect the largest two-story buildings first. Confirm that the team actually checked for a pit rather than assuming a surface doorway was the entrance. Keep searching other ruins if one building has no tunnel; the available guidance does not guarantee that every ruin contains one.
The key holder disconnects
Check the communal chest, the player’s last known camp, and the corpse location if the disconnect followed a death. Make a server rule that every Intricate Key is logged immediately and moved to shared storage when the expedition ends.
A portal is destroyed
Use the backup route and rebuild from the reserved materials. Do not carry every rare progression item through an unconnected area; move the group’s key and blood stock only after the replacement portal is operational.

The raid wipes the party
Stop the next cycle. Re-establish the camp, recover bodies with a small escort, repair equipment, and restock food. The three-cycle route is safer when each completed raid is treated as a checkpoint instead of immediately chaining another attempt.

Preserve the existing world backup, test the current build on a copy, and let the group compare the four decision factors: endgame supplies, infrastructure, shared discovery, and tolerance for post-launch changes. Do not delete the old map until every player has approved the replacement.
Version-aware rules for a long-running server
Valheim 1.0 launched across PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 with crossplay announced by Iron Gate. A mixed-platform group should still verify that all clients and the server are on compatible current builds before an expedition. The release notes’ counts describe the 1.0 launch package, not a promise that every number or balance value will remain unchanged.
Maintain a short server log containing the game version, world backup date, portal names, completed Morkhalla cycles, blood count, and the player responsible for the next task. That record is more useful than a static guide when Iron Gate changes a recipe, raid behavior, or resource distribution.
