Use GitLab CI to build an image, authenticate to GitLab’s Container Registry, push an immutable commit tag, test that exact tag on a clean runner, and promote it to a release tag only after validation. The pattern avoids concurrent pipelines overwriting latest, keeps credentials out of source control, and gives deployments a traceable image and environment history.

What you are building
GitLab’s Container Registry is a private registry for Docker and OCI images. In a typical project, a pipeline performs four separate jobs: build an image from your Dockerfile, test the pushed image, release a tested tag, and deploy that release to an environment. Keeping those concerns separate is more reliable than building and publishing directly to latest in every pipeline.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The project variable $CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE resolves to the registry address associated with the project. A commit-specific tag such as $CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:$CI_COMMIT_SHA identifies one source revision permanently enough for deployment and rollback decisions. For branch or review builds, $CI_COMMIT_REF_SLUG produces a Docker-compatible tag from a branch name; this matters because ordinary branch names may contain forward slashes, which Docker tags cannot contain.
GitLab’s documentation states that you must authenticate with the container registry before building and pushing container images. Authentication is therefore an explicit pipeline step, not an optional enhancement.

Prerequisites and trust boundaries
- A GitLab project with a Dockerfile and a runner capable of executing container builds.
- A runner configuration that permits the selected build engine. Docker-in-Docker (DinD) commonly requires a service container and the privilege settings permitted by your runner policy.
- Permission for the pipeline identity to write to the project’s Container Registry.
- A deployment target that can pull the project image, plus a separately scoped read credential if that target is outside the pipeline.
- A plan for private certificate authorities if GitLab or the registry uses a self-signed or privately issued TLS certificate.
Decide where the Docker daemon or OCI builder is trusted. A containerized runner that mounts /var/run/docker.sock talks to the host daemon and can expose the host to jobs that gain Docker control. DinD provides a separate daemon model but changes the runner’s privilege and networking requirements. Buildah or Podman may reduce the need for a privileged Docker daemon, although compatibility with your Dockerfile and executor still has to be verified.
Write and verify the Dockerfile first
Build locally before introducing CI failures. Keep the Dockerfile deterministic: pin important base-image versions, copy only required files, install dependencies in repeatable commands, and define a clear runtime entry point. Run the same basic checks locally that the pipeline will run, such as starting the container, exercising a health endpoint, and confirming that required environment variables are documented.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not put registry credentials, access tokens, or private keys in the Dockerfile or build context. Use a suitable secret mechanism for build-time secrets when your builder supports one, and ensure secret files are excluded by .dockerignore. The image itself should contain only what the application needs at runtime.
Configure GitLab CI with Docker-in-Docker
The following minimal job uses a Docker CLI image and a Docker-in-Docker service. The versions are the documented example values; update them deliberately rather than allowing an unreviewed floating tag.
build:
image: docker:24.0.5-cli
services:
- docker:24.0.5-dind
variables:
IMAGE_TAG: $CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:$CI_COMMIT_SHA
script:
- echo "$CI_REGISTRY_PASSWORD" | docker login "$CI_REGISTRY" -u "$CI_REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin
- docker build --pull -t "$IMAGE_TAG" .
- docker push "$IMAGE_TAG"
docker build --pull asks the builder to check for a newer version of each referenced base image instead of relying solely on a cached copy. The image is tagged with the commit SHA before it is pushed, so the registry object can be associated with one revision. The push command uses exactly the same tag; a mismatch between build and push tags is a common reason for apparently missing images.

How the DinD connection works
The job container contains the Docker client, while the service runs the Docker daemon. The runner must make the service reachable under the hostname and connection settings expected by the job. Those settings differ between runner versions and TLS modes, so configure the Docker host, certificate directory, service alias, and privilege options according to the runner’s documented mode instead of copying settings blindly between installations.
Recommended Free Tools
When the runner is configured for TLS, the client must receive the service’s generated certificates. When TLS is intentionally disabled inside an isolated runner network, the daemon connection must still be restricted to that job network. A failure to align the client’s connection settings with the service normally appears as a daemon-unreachable, certificate, or connection-refused error before the Dockerfile is even evaluated.
Authenticate with the right credential
GitLab exposes credentials suitable for the current CI job. The documented login pattern streams the password through standard input so it is not placed in the command’s visible argument list:
echo "$CI_REGISTRY_PASSWORD" | docker login "$CI_REGISTRY" -u "$CI_REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin
Choose credentials by who is performing the operation and how much access is required.
| Use case | Credential category | Access guidance |
|---|---|---|
| GitLab CI/CD job | CI/CD job token and the registry variables supplied to the job | Preferred automatic method for pipeline package and registry operations; scope it to the job’s needs. |
| Developer workstation | Personal access token or group access token | Use a token with registry permissions rather than a personal password, and revoke or rotate it when no longer needed. |
| External read-only puller | Deploy token | Appropriate when a server or consumer only needs to pull private images. |
| Runner pulling a private job image | Runner-side registry authentication | Configure the runner and use the fully qualified image, for example my.registry.tld:5000/namespace/image:tag. |
Never hard-code a long-lived secret in .gitlab-ci.yml. Store it in GitLab’s protected or masked CI/CD variable mechanisms appropriate to the deployment. Protect release and production credentials so an untrusted branch cannot print or use them.

Use immutable tags for builds and reviews
Tags should communicate whether an image is an immutable build artifact or a movable pointer. The following scheme keeps those meanings separate.
| Tag expression | Purpose | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
$CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:$CI_COMMIT_SHA |
Build, test, rollback, and deployment identity | One tag per commit; downstream jobs pull this exact value. |
$CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:$CI_COMMIT_REF_SLUG |
Branch or review environment | Moves when new commits land on the branch; safe for preview use, not a permanent release identity. |
$CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:latest |
Convenience pointer for a chosen release | Mutable; update only from a controlled release job. |
| A version or release tag | Human-facing release and rollback label | Set by release policy after tests pass; define whether your process permits replacing it. |
GitLab warns against having every concurrent job build directly to latest. Two pipelines can finish in a different order from the order in which commits were created, silently replacing one another. Commit tags remove that race; promotion later makes the mutable pointer intentional.
Pull the image explicitly in downstream tests
A later job may run on a different runner with an unrelated local cache. Do not assume that the image built by an earlier job is present locally. Pass the immutable tag as a variable or artifact and pull it before running tests:
test_image:
image: docker:24.0.5-cli
services:
- docker:24.0.5-dind
variables:
IMAGE_TAG: $CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:$CI_COMMIT_SHA
script:
- echo "$CI_REGISTRY_PASSWORD" | docker login "$CI_REGISTRY" -u "$CI_REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin
- docker pull "$IMAGE_TAG"
- docker run --rm "$IMAGE_TAG" your-test-command
Replace your-test-command with the command that exercises your application. Testing the pulled registry object validates both the pushed image and the permissions needed by a deployment-like consumer. If tests need a database or another service, declare those services explicitly and clean up containers after the job.
Promote only a tested image
A release job should pull the commit tag that passed tests, retag that same image as latest or a version label, and push the new tag. It must not rebuild from the working tree: rebuilding could produce a different base layer or dependency result than the artifact that was tested.

release:
image: docker:24.0.5-cli
services:
- docker:24.0.5-dind
variables:
IMAGE_TAG: $CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:$CI_COMMIT_SHA
RELEASE_TAG: $CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:latest
rules:
- if: $CI_COMMIT_BRANCH == $CI_DEFAULT_BRANCH
script:
- echo "$CI_REGISTRY_PASSWORD" | docker login "$CI_REGISTRY" -u "$CI_REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin
- docker pull "$IMAGE_TAG"
- docker tag "$IMAGE_TAG" "$RELEASE_TAG"
- docker push "$RELEASE_TAG"
Use a version tag instead of, or in addition to, latest when operators need an explicit release identifier. Restrict this job to the default or main branch with rules, and protect the branch and relevant variables. If release approval is required, add a manual gate before promotion rather than allowing every successful branch pipeline to publish a production pointer.
Deploy with an environment and an approval gate
Keep deployment separate from image creation. A deployment job should consume the release tag produced by the release job and declare the target environment, such as production. GitLab records deployment history per environment, which gives operators a timeline of what was deployed and when.
deploy_production:
stage: deploy
needs: [release]
environment:
name: production
rules:
- if: $CI_COMMIT_BRANCH == $CI_DEFAULT_BRANCH
when: manual
script:
- ./deploy.sh "$CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:latest"
Use protected environments when only approved users may deploy. A deployment script should verify that the target can authenticate to the registry, pull the intended tag, report the image digest where possible, and fail if the application does not become healthy. Rollback then means selecting a previously tested commit or release tag rather than rebuilding an old source tree.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build without a privileged Docker daemon
GitLab Runner documentation also describes Buildah and Podman login, build, and push flows. They can fit runners where privileged DinD is prohibited or where an OCI-native builder is preferred.
Buildah pattern
echo "$CI_REGISTRY_PASSWORD" | buildah login --username "$CI_REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin "$CI_REGISTRY"
buildah bud -t "$IMAGE_TAG" .
buildah push "$IMAGE_TAG"
Podman pattern
echo "$CI_REGISTRY_PASSWORD" | podman login "$CI_REGISTRY" --username "$CI_REGISTRY_USER" --password-stdin
podman build --pull -t "$IMAGE_TAG" .
podman push "$IMAGE_TAG"
These examples preserve the same registry authentication and immutable-tag policy as the Docker job. Select the engine based on the runner executor, whether privileged operations are acceptable, support for your Dockerfile features, cache behavior, and the security policy governing image builds. Do not assume that a Docker-specific option, credential helper, or local cache behaves identically under all three engines.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Private TLS and certificate authorities
If the GitLab server or registry uses a self-signed certificate or a private certificate authority, the runner container must trust that CA. Install or mount the CA where the Docker client, builder, and any GitLab API client can use it. Without that trust, registry login, image push, image pull, or API communication can fail even when the username and token are correct.
- Confirm the hostname in the certificate matches the registry hostname used by
$CI_REGISTRY. - Install the CA in the runner and in any separate deployment host that pulls the image.
- Restart or recreate the runner after changing its trust store when the executor caches the old container image.
- Do not “fix” certificate errors by disabling TLS verification in production.
Common failures and precise fixes
“unauthorized” or “authentication required”
Check that login runs before both push and pull, that the registry hostname is exactly $CI_REGISTRY, and that the job token or token used has permission for the project path. For an external consumer, use a deploy token or another intentionally scoped read credential rather than the CI job token.
The image is built but cannot be found
Print the fully resolved tag and compare it with the push and pull commands. A branch slug, project path, or commit variable accidentally changed between jobs can create two different names. Downstream jobs should pull the same commit-SHA tag that the build job pushed.
Docker cannot connect to the daemon
Verify that the DinD service is running, the job can resolve its service hostname, and the client’s Docker host and TLS settings match the runner’s mode. If the runner disallows the required privilege model, switch to a permitted Buildah or Podman configuration instead of weakening the runner policy.
Push fails with a certificate error
Install the private CA in the runner or deployment host that is making the connection, then verify the certificate hostname and chain. Credentials cannot compensate for an untrusted TLS endpoint.

A test uses an old image
Pull the immutable tag explicitly in the test job. Separate runners can have stale local layers, and a local image name alone does not prove that the job is exercising the object just pushed.
Two pipelines publish different code as latest
Stop tagging latest in build jobs. Build and test commit-SHA tags, then allow only one protected release job to retag and push the pointer after validation.
Operational checklist
- Dockerfile builds successfully locally and has a repeatable runtime command.
- Base images are refreshed intentionally with
--pulland reviewed for compatibility. - Registry login uses
--password-stdin; no secret appears in YAML or logs. - The build pushes
$CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE:$CI_COMMIT_SHA. - Downstream jobs perform an explicit pull before running the image.
- Branch builds use
$CI_COMMIT_REF_SLUGwhen a readable moving tag is needed. - Only a controlled release job promotes a tested image to
latestor a release tag. - Production deployment is tied to an environment and, where appropriate, a manual approval.
- Runner privilege, Docker socket exposure, and service isolation match the trust boundary.
- Private CAs are trusted by every runner and deployment host that contacts GitLab or the registry.
- External pullers receive read-only credentials with the narrowest practical scope.
Choosing an implementation
Compare implementations on seven questions: which build engine runs, what privilege the runner receives, which credential type and scope are used, whether tags are immutable until promotion, how base-image freshness and caching are handled, how private TLS is trusted, and which environment controls protect deployment. The best design is the one that satisfies those constraints while keeping the tested artifact unchanged from build through release.
