Use native ACME when your version supports the challenge type you need; use an external client when you need compatibility with older releases or an existing certificate-management workflow.

HTTP-01 requires the public request to /.well-known/acme-challenge/ to reach HAProxy on port 80. DNS-01 proves control by creating a TXT record through your DNS provider’s API and is the option for wildcard certificates or environments where port 80 cannot be exposed. In every design, the certificate loaded by HAProxy must be a PEM bundle containing the private key and certificate chain, renewal must be automated, and the deployment must be tested against Let’s Encrypt’s staging service before production issuance.

Choose an ACME design before changing HAProxy
The right implementation depends mainly on your HAProxy version, network topology, and whether you can expose port 80 or grant DNS API access.

| Native HAProxy ACME | Official tutorial covers HAProxy 3.2 and newer; DNS-01 is documented for 3.3 and newer. Documentation is aimed at a single load balancer. | HTTP-01 in 3.2+; DNS-01 in 3.3+ with a supported provider. | HAProxy certificate store and Runtime API; newer releases can initiate issuance during restart, while HAProxy 3.2 requires an initial runtime renewal workflow. | Issuance and loading are centralized in HAProxy, but directives and provider support are version-dependent. |
acme.sh with Runtime API |
HAProxy Technologies documents the improved loading behavior for HAProxy 2.2 and newer. | Stateless HTTP-01 is documented; HAProxy returns the challenge response. | Deployment through the stats socket and Runtime API can activate a renewed certificate without restarting the process. | Works across more HAProxy versions, but requires client hooks, socket permissions, and renewal monitoring. |
| Certbot | Useful when certificate issuance is already managed outside HAProxy or when port 80 can be temporarily freed. | --standalone or --webroot for HTTP-01. |
Install the resulting PEM in HAProxy and arrange a reload or other deployment action appropriate to your packaging. | Certbot describes HAProxy installation support as best effort, so validate the deployment hook on your distribution. |
For an active-active pair, do not assume that issuing on one node updates the other. Share the resulting certificate through a controlled distribution mechanism, issue independently with coordinated DNS/API permissions, or put certificate management in a separate system that can update both nodes.

Prerequisites and a safe rollout plan
- A DNS A and, if used, AAAA record for every hostname must resolve to the public address that reaches the intended HAProxy frontend.
- For HTTP-01, inbound TCP port 80 must reach that frontend. A redirect from other HTTP paths is fine, but the ACME challenge path must be answered before the redirect rule.
- For DNS-01, the account used by HAProxy or the external client needs permission to create and remove the required TXT record at the authoritative DNS provider.
- HAProxy must have a Runtime API endpoint, normally a protected stats socket, when you use native certificate-store operations or
acme.shdeployment. - The HAProxy service account must be able to read the certificate directory and private-key material without making those files broadly readable.
- Plan a staging test first. Staging certificates are not trusted by normal browsers, but they let you verify challenge routing and deployment without consuming production issuance limits.
Keep a known-good certificate available while bootstrapping. HAProxy 3.2’s native workflow requires a dummy certificate so the process can start before the first ACME certificate has been generated.
HTTP-01 versus DNS-01
HTTP-01: simplest when port 80 reaches HAProxy
Let’s Encrypt sends an HTTP request for a token under /.well-known/acme-challenge/. The response must come from the HAProxy instance that the public DNS record identifies. Any CDN, firewall, second proxy, or alternate IPv6 route in front of HAProxy must preserve that path and return the expected token.
HTTP-01 cannot issue wildcard certificates. It is usually the least complex choice for one or more ordinary hostnames when port 80 is available and the load balancer can answer the challenge directly.
DNS-01: required for wildcards and useful without public port 80
DNS-01 proves control by publishing a TXT record through your DNS provider’s API. It does not require an HTTP listener, so it works when port 80 is blocked or when the service is intentionally private. Propagation time and API permissions become the critical dependencies.
Native HAProxy documentation lists providers including Azure, Cloudflare, DigitalOcean, Google Cloud DNS, GoDaddy, Hetzner, IONOS, Linode, Namecheap, OVH, Porkbun, Route 53, Scaleway, and Vultr. Provider support and credential names are version-specific; configure the provider documented for your installed HAProxy release and limit the API credential to the zone and record operations required for ACME.
Path A: native HAProxy ACME
1. Confirm the feature set
The official native tutorial applies to HAProxy 3.2 and newer. HTTP-01 is documented from 3.2; DNS-01 is documented from 3.3. Check the running binary, not only the package name, and verify that your distribution has built the ACME functionality you intend to use. If the version is older or the required challenge is unavailable, use acme.sh or Certbot instead.

2. Prepare certificate storage and the Runtime API
Create the certificate-store directory and the location used for the ACME account and generated PEM files. Make the directory owned by the account that performs issuance, and grant HAProxy read access without granting other users access to private keys. Define a protected Runtime API socket in the global configuration; the socket’s filesystem permissions determine who can renew, inspect, or replace certificates.
Do not put a private key in a directory readable by every system user, and do not expose the Runtime API socket over an untrusted network. Back up the account data and the last known-good PEM through your normal secrets-management process.
3. Add the native ACME and certificate-store sections
Use the directives and section names from the tutorial for your exact HAProxy release. The ACME section points to the Let’s Encrypt staging directory during validation, while the crt-store defines where generated PEM files are written and how HAProxy selects them. The global section must include the ACME-related settings required by that release.
Bind the public frontend on both port 80 and port 443 as appropriate. The frontend must recognize /.well-known/acme-challenge/, return the ACME token, redirect other HTTP requests to HTTPS, and select the generated certificate from the certificate store for TLS connections. Put the challenge rule ahead of a catch-all redirect or backend rule.
4. Bootstrap HAProxy 3.2 with a dummy certificate
On HAProxy 3.2, place a temporary certificate in the configured store so the process can start and expose its Runtime API. The dummy certificate is only a bootstrap artifact; replace it with the issued PEM after the first successful ACME transaction. Validate the configuration before starting or reloading HAProxy.
5. Request and persist the first certificate
Use the Runtime API to run the native acme renew operation for the configured certificate. Watch the ACME task status and logs for challenge completion, authorization errors, or storage failures. Once issuance succeeds, use the Runtime API’s dump ssl cert operation to persist the resulting certificate to the configured certificate-store path. The exact Runtime API command syntax and certificate identifier are release-specific, so use the command form shown by the documentation shipped with your version.

Newer releases covered by the official tutorial can initiate issuance on restart, but you should still verify the task result and confirm that the generated PEM is present before treating the deployment as complete.
6. Switch from staging to production
Keep the staging directory while testing the complete flow: DNS resolution, port-80 reachability, token response, certificate creation, PEM loading, and HTTPS service. After those checks pass, change the ACME directory to Let’s Encrypt production, remove the temporary certificate only after the production PEM is available, and perform one controlled issuance. Production certificates are trusted by clients; staging certificates are not.

How the stateless pattern works
In the HAProxy Technologies pattern, acme.sh performs the ACME exchange but does not dynamically generate the HTTP response. HAProxy itself returns the token, which is why the challenge route must be present before issuance begins. The guide describes this as a stateless mode: the client relies on HAProxy to handle the HTTP challenge.
A representative frontend rule is:
http-request return status 200 content-type text/plain lf-string "%[path,field(-1,/)].${ACCOUNT_THUMBPRINT}n" if { path_beg '/.well-known/acme-challenge/' }
Place the rule in the frontend that receives public port-80 traffic. Confirm that the expression returns the token expected by the account and that no redirect, authentication rule, or backend selection runs first.
Configure the socket and staging endpoint
Enable a HAProxy stats socket and restrict its ownership and mode so only the deployment process can issue certificate commands. Configure acme.sh to use the Let’s Encrypt staging server while testing. The client needs the account thumbprint used by the stateless response and a deployment hook that sends the new PEM to HAProxy’s Runtime API.
Issue a staging certificate, then inspect both the client log and HAProxy’s response. A successful ACME transaction is not enough if the PEM was written with the wrong name, lacks the private key, or was never loaded into the active certificate store.

Deploy without restarting the process
The documented HAProxy 2.2-and-newer loading behavior lets a renewed certificate be activated through the Runtime API without restarting the HAProxy process. The deployment hook should combine the certificate and private key in the PEM format expected by HAProxy, send the replacement through the stats socket, and persist it to disk so a later reload does not revert to the old certificate.
Test the hook manually with a staging certificate before enabling unattended renewal. Record the socket path, certificate identifier, destination PEM path, and the account that runs the hook; most failures are permission or naming errors rather than ACME protocol errors.
Move to production and schedule renewal
After the stateless HTTP-01 path works against staging, point acme.sh at production, issue the certificate, and verify the active certificate through a real TLS connection. Keep the client’s scheduled renewal enabled and alert when the deployment hook exits unsuccessfully. Renewal that only updates a file but does not update the running certificate is not a successful deployment.
Path C: Certbot with HAProxy
Use standalone mode only when port 80 can be freed
Certbot’s standalone method starts its own temporary HTTP server. The documented command is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →certbot certonly --standalone
Because Certbot must bind port 80, stop or otherwise free the HAProxy listener for the duration of validation. This causes a service interruption unless you have another node serving the address, so schedule it deliberately and restore HAProxy immediately after issuance.
Use webroot mode when an HTTP service remains active
When another web server remains active, use:
certbot certonly --webroot
Webroot mode writes a token file under /.well-known/acme-challenge/. HAProxy routing must preserve that path and send it to the webroot that Certbot uses. Verify the exact file path from the public Internet before requesting the certificate; a backend that serves the site correctly can still fail ACME if it rewrites or blocks the challenge directory.

Install and renew the HAProxy certificate
After Certbot obtains the certificate, combine the certificate and private key in the PEM layout expected by HAProxy, install it in the configured certificate directory, and apply the reload or Runtime API action required by your HAProxy package. Certbot’s HAProxy instructions are best effort, so confirm the paths, ownership, reload command, and hook behavior on your operating system rather than assuming a universal service layout.
Schedule recurring renewal with certbot renew. Certbot documents a twice-daily invocation with a randomized delay, which avoids every installation contacting the ACME service at the same instant. A renewal timer or cron job must also run the deployment action that makes the new certificate active in HAProxy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCertificate files, PEM layout, and permissions
HAProxy expects a PEM bundle containing the certificate and its private key; include the complete chain required by your HAProxy configuration and client population. A certificate file that contains only the public certificate may pass an issuance check but fail when HAProxy tries to load it.
- Keep the private key readable only by the issuing account and the HAProxy service account, using a dedicated group where necessary.
- Make the destination path stable across renewals so the Runtime API and reload configuration refer to the same file.
- Write a new file and replace the old one atomically when your deployment tooling supports it; do not leave a partially written PEM where HAProxy can read it.
- Validate the PEM and key pairing before loading it. A mismatched key, incomplete chain, or unreadable file should fail the deployment hook and trigger an alert.
- Persist a successfully loaded certificate to disk. Runtime-only changes disappear after a restart unless the file store is updated.
Renewal without an avoidable restart
Let’s Encrypt certificates are short-lived, so renewal is a recurring operations task rather than a one-time setup. Native HAProxy ACME exposes task status and can use the Runtime API and certificate store. The acme.sh integration can load a renewed certificate without restarting the process when its Runtime API deployment is configured correctly. A Certbot installation may require a reload or distribution-specific hook.
Define success as three separate events: the ACME client obtained a new certificate, the PEM was written with the correct permissions, and the running HAProxy process is serving that new certificate. Monitor all three. Alert before expiry, on failed renewal, on failed deployment, and when the active certificate fingerprint or expiration date does not change after a scheduled renewal.
Keep logs for the ACME client, the deployment hook, and HAProxy’s Runtime API. A quiet scheduler is not proof of success; a job can run regularly while every deployment fails due to a socket permission or certificate-path error.

Validation checklist before production
- Resolve every certificate hostname through public A and AAAA lookups and confirm that both address families reach the intended HAProxy instance, or remove an unusable AAAA record.
- Request the exact challenge URL, including a test token-shaped path, from outside your network and verify that port 80 reaches the correct frontend.
- Confirm the challenge response is returned before an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and before authentication or application routing.
- Run a staging issuance and check the client status, HAProxy logs, Runtime API status, and certificate-store file.
- Inspect the PEM for the private key and complete chain, then verify that the HAProxy service account can read it.
- Connect over HTTPS and confirm that the newly issued certificate, hostname, and chain are the ones being served.
- Test the renewal hook with a controlled staging renewal, including persistence across an HAProxy restart or reload.
- Switch to production only after every preceding check succeeds, then record the expiry date and alert threshold.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP-01 authorization times out | DNS points elsewhere, port 80 is blocked, or an IPv6 route reaches a different service. | Public A/AAAA resolution, firewall rules, NAT, and the exact frontend receiving port 80. |
| Challenge returns a redirect or application page | The ACME rule is below a redirect, rewrite, authentication rule, or backend route. | Move the /.well-known/acme-challenge/ rule ahead of catch-all processing and test the exact path. |
| DNS-01 reports an absent TXT record | API credentials lack record permissions, the wrong zone is selected, or DNS propagation has not completed. | Provider audit logs, authoritative nameservers, TXT contents, and the provider configuration for the installed HAProxy version. |
| HAProxy will not start after certificate changes | The PEM lacks the private key or chain, the key does not match, or the service account cannot read the file. | File ownership and mode, PEM contents, key/certificate pairing, and configuration validation output. |
| Renewal succeeds but clients still see the old certificate | The file was updated without a Runtime API load or reload, or the runtime certificate identifier was wrong. | Active certificate details through HAProxy, deployment-hook logs, socket permissions, and persistence to the configured store. |
| Runtime API commands fail with permission denied | The renewal account cannot open the stats socket or issue certificate operations. | Socket path, owner, group, mode, service confinement, and the account running the scheduler. |
| Staging works but production fails | The production directory was changed before all routing was validated, or production issuance limits were reached. | Re-test the exact challenge path, inspect production authorization errors, and avoid repeated blind retries. |
Security practices that matter after issuance
- Use DNS API credentials scoped to the smallest possible zone and record privileges; never place unrestricted provider credentials in a world-readable HAProxy configuration.
- Protect the Runtime API socket and do not expose administrative commands on a public listener.
- Separate the account that requests certificates from ordinary application deployment users when practical.
- Retain the previous working PEM until the replacement has been loaded and verified, then remove obsolete private keys according to your retention policy.
- Test both IPv4 and IPv6 challenge reachability whenever both records exist.
- For multiple HAProxy nodes, define how certificates are distributed and how each node is verified after renewal; a successful update on one node does not prove that the pair is synchronized.
- Document the installed HAProxy version, challenge type, ACME directory, certificate-store path, socket path, renewal scheduler, and rollback procedure.
Recommended decision
Choose native ACME on HAProxy 3.2 or newer when HTTP-01 is sufficient, or on 3.3 or newer when you need the documented native DNS-01 integration. Choose acme.sh when you want stateless HTTP-01 and Runtime API activation without a process restart, particularly on HAProxy 2.2 and newer. Choose Certbot when an existing Certbot estate or webroot workflow is more important than centralizing issuance in HAProxy, and account for the reload or temporary port-80 interruption that your method requires.
