This is conversational automation rather than a traditional drag-and-drop flowchart. You can build useful workflows without writing application code, but advanced setups may still require configuration files, permissions, and careful security rules.

What OpenClaw automation actually does
OpenClaw is presented as an open-source personal AI agent that you reach through chat channels and connect to external tools. Its central automation loop is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Trigger: a schedule, incoming message, webhook, or event from a connected service.
- Task description: a natural-language instruction explaining what should happen.
- Tool connection: access to the file, CRM, repository, payment service, or other application involved.
- Reviewable result: a draft, report, proposed change, or completed action returned to you through the configured channel.
Instead of drawing every branch, you describe the desired outcome and let the agent decide which supported steps to use. That makes the first version approachable for non-programmers, while still leaving you responsible for access permissions, approval gates, and testing. OpenClaw’s official documentation is available at docs.openclaw.ai; channel names, commands, and supported integrations can change, so check the current documentation before deploying a workflow.
How this differs from a visual workflow builder
In a visual automation system, you normally place trigger, filter, action, and branching nodes on a canvas and configure each field. OpenClaw takes a conversational approach: you state the goal and constraints, and the agent assembles the procedure. A visual tool remains useful when every deterministic step must be visible and identical on every run. OpenClaw is more useful when the work includes interpretation, summarization, drafting, or choosing among tools.

| Question | Conversational OpenClaw approach | Visual flowchart approach |
|---|---|---|
| How you start | Describe the trigger, outcome, limits, and output in ordinary language. | Choose a trigger node and connect action nodes on a canvas. |
| Best at | Reasoning over text, classifying items, summarizing records, and drafting responses. | Repeatable, deterministic transformations and clearly visible branches. |
| What you inspect | The agent’s proposed or completed result, tool calls, and approval requests. | Each configured node, field mapping, and execution log. |
| Main risk | An ambiguous instruction or excessive permission can produce an unwanted action. | A misconfigured node or branch can run reliably but still do the wrong thing. |
You can combine the two styles. A common division is to let OpenClaw interpret a request and let a deterministic workflow engine perform fixed steps. In that arrangement, OpenClaw handles reasoning while the visual system handles predictable data movement.
What you need before building your first workflow
Prepare these pieces before asking the agent to automate anything:
- A continuously available host: the process must be online when a schedule, webhook, or message arrives. A laptop that sleeps is suitable for experiments, not dependable production schedules.
- AI model access: provide an API key or other supported authentication for the model OpenClaw will use. Store the key as a secret rather than in a chat message or workflow text.
- A message channel: you need somewhere to issue instructions and receive results. Telegram is a practical first choice because setup requires a bot token and does not require installing a separate plugin, according to the getting-started material.
- Connected tools: grant only the services needed for the specific workflow, such as a file location, CRM, code repository, or payment-event feed.
- Approval rules: decide which actions can run automatically and which must wait for your confirmation. Start with drafts and read-only access.
- A test workspace: use sample records, a non-production repository, and a dedicated output folder until the workflow has behaved correctly through several runs.
The official channel list shown in documentation snippets includes Telegram, Discord, Feishu, iMessage, Matrix, Microsoft Teams, Signal, Slack, WhatsApp, and Zalo. Availability and setup details vary by channel, so verify the current list at the official documentation.
Install and verify the gateway
The exact installation method depends on your host and the current OpenClaw release. One third-party setup guide recommends Node.js 24, or Node.js 22.19 or newer, but that requirement has not been confirmed against the full official documentation. Treat it as a compatibility hint and check the release-specific prerequisites before installing.
Run the onboarding command only after checking the release
A third-party guide names this command:
openclaw onboard --install-daemon
It is described as covering model authentication, workspace creation, gateway configuration, and optional channels. Because command names can change, confirm the command in the version of docs.openclaw.ai that matches your installation.

Confirm that the service is reachable
These diagnostic commands are named in troubleshooting material:
openclaw status
openclaw gateway status
openclaw logs --follow
openclaw doctor
openclaw channels status --probe
openclaw statusshould identify the local installation and its general state.openclaw gateway statuschecks the gateway process that connects the agent to channels and tools.openclaw logs --followlets you watch startup, authentication, and tool-call errors as they occur.openclaw doctoris intended to surface configuration or dependency problems.openclaw channels status --probechecks whether configured channels can be reached.
If your installed version rejects a command, do not substitute a guessed flag. Use the version’s built-in help or the matching official documentation, then repeat the check with the documented syntax.
Connect Telegram as a first channel
Telegram is a sensible starter channel because the onboarding material describes a bot-token setup without a separate plugin installation. Create a bot with Telegram’s bot-management interface, keep the token private, and provide it through OpenClaw’s supported channel configuration. Then send a test message from an account that is explicitly allowed to interact with the bot.
- Create the bot and copy its token into your secret store or the configuration method documented for your release.
- Run the channel-status probe and inspect the gateway logs for authentication errors.
- Send a harmless test request, such as asking the agent to list files in a dedicated test folder without modifying them.
- Confirm that the response arrives in the expected chat and that unknown users cannot issue commands.
- Only after that test should you connect a real application or schedule.
The same pattern applies to other supported chat applications: configure the channel, restrict who can message the agent, test read-only behavior, and then add tools.
Build a safe automation in four steps
1. Write a precise trigger
State when the workflow should start and include a timezone. “Every Monday at 09:00 UTC” is safer than “each week,” because an ambiguous schedule can run at an unexpected local time. For event-driven work, name the event and its source, such as “when a pull-request webhook arrives.”

2. Define the task and boundaries
Describe the input, the operations allowed, and the operations forbidden. Specify whether the agent should summarize, classify, draft, or execute. Include limits such as “do not send,” “do not delete,” or “do not alter production.”
3. Connect one tool at a time
Start with the smallest permission set that can answer the question. A weekly report may need read access to a CRM export but not permission to edit customer records. A pull-request review may need repository read access and a draft-comment capability, not merge permission.
4. Require a reviewable output
Ask for a predictable result: a message containing a summary and source links, a draft saved to a named folder, or a proposed change awaiting approval. Have the agent report what it read, what it decided, and which action it is requesting next.
Starter workflow 1: scheduled landing-page draft
This is a low-risk first project because it can run without customer data, payment access, or production publishing permission.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prepare the workspace
- Create a test folder where drafts are allowed.
- Write a short brief: audience, product description, tone, key benefits, required sections, and prohibited claims.
- Choose a schedule and timezone.
- Give OpenClaw permission to read the brief and save a new draft, but not to publish it.
Use a constrained instruction
For example:
Every Tuesday at 09:00 UTC, read the brief in the landing-page test folder. Draft one landing page for the specified audience, using only facts in the brief. Save it as a new Markdown file with the date in the filename. Do not publish, overwrite an existing file, invent prices, or claim performance results. Return the filename and a short list of statements that need human review.
Review the first runs
Check that the schedule fires once, the file is saved in the intended location, and unsupported claims are flagged instead of invented. If the draft is too broad, add explicit section limits and a maximum word count to the instruction. Keep publishing as a separate, manually approved step until the workflow is predictable.

Starter workflow 2: weekly CRM review
Make the initial version analytical and draft-only. It should read the CRM data, identify trends, and prepare a report without changing records or contacting leads.
Define the input and output
- Input: the CRM export or read-only CRM view, with a stated date range.
- Analysis: new opportunities, stage changes, stalled deals, missing next steps, and notable week-over-week changes.
- Output: a dated summary delivered to your chosen channel and saved to a review folder.
- Exclusions: no record edits, email sends, lead assignment, or deletion.
Schedule and test
Schedule it for Monday morning in a named timezone. Run it manually against a small, sanitized export first. Compare a few totals with the source file and inspect whether the agent distinguishes missing data from a genuine zero. Add an approval step before anyone turns a recommendation into a CRM update.
Other useful event-driven workflows
Pull-request review from a webhook
A webhook can notify OpenClaw when a pull request opens or changes. In a safe first version, let the agent read the diff, summarize likely risks, and save a review draft. Do not grant merge or deployment rights. Include repository, branch, file scope, and the required review checklist in the instruction so the agent does not infer standards that were never provided.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Stripe payment-event response
Payment events are more sensitive. Begin with a notification-only workflow that records the event type and prepares a response for a human. Add customer communication or account changes only after signature validation, duplicate-event handling, and approval rules are working. Never expose payment secrets in prompts or logs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make “no-code” honest: where configuration still appears
You can create the workflows above through natural-language instructions, but “no-code” is not absolute. OpenClaw deployments may still involve environment variables, channel credentials, permissions, schedules, and structured configuration. Lobster Shell, described as OpenClaw’s native pipeline engine, uses typed YAML workflows and approval gates. Its initial release was reported in February 2026, and public documentation is still limited. If you choose it, expect to edit YAML and validate the schema even when the business logic was first described conversationally.

ClawFlows offers prebuilt recipes that you can pick, install, and run without authoring YAML. Skills provide another middle ground: each skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that teaches the agent a repeatable procedure. Skills are found and installed through ClawHub, described as the official public registry at clawhub.ai. Read a skill’s instructions and requested permissions before installing it.

- Approval gates: require confirmation before sending messages, editing records, merging code, publishing content, or moving money.
- Secret handling: keep API keys and bot tokens in the host’s secret mechanism. Do not paste them into prompts, skill files, or shared logs.
- Data minimization: pass only the fields required for the task. Redact personal, financial, or authentication data from test inputs.
- Auditability: save the trigger, source records, proposed action, approval, and final result so you can reconstruct a run.
- Failure behavior: specify what to do when a tool is unavailable, data is incomplete, or a duplicate event arrives. Pausing for review is safer than guessing.
- Separate environments: use a sandbox folder, test CRM, or non-production repository until the workflow has passed representative tests.
Troubleshoot the first failed run
The gateway is not running
Check openclaw status and openclaw gateway status, then watch openclaw logs --follow while restarting the service using the method documented for your host. A sleeping machine, expired process, or missing environment variable can all make a schedule appear broken.
The channel is configured but messages do not arrive
Run openclaw channels status --probe. Confirm that the bot token is current, the chat account is permitted, and the gateway can reach the channel service. If the probe succeeds but no response appears, inspect logs for routing rules or an approval state waiting for confirmation.
The agent can read but cannot complete an action
Inspect the tool’s permission scope and the workflow’s approval rule. Many safe configurations intentionally allow reading and drafting while blocking writes. Do not solve this by granting unrestricted access; add only the specific capability needed and test it in a sandbox.
The result is plausible but wrong
Limit the input, define the date range and timezone, require citations or source-record identifiers in the output, and ask the agent to state uncertainty. Compare the report with a small hand-checked sample before scheduling it again.

A practical rollout plan
- Day one: install the gateway, connect one channel, and run a read-only test.
- First workflow: schedule a landing-page draft or another file-based task with no production permissions.
- Validation: run several manual and scheduled tests, checking timing, output location, completeness, and failure behavior.
- Second workflow: add a weekly CRM analysis that drafts a report but cannot edit records.
- Controlled expansion: connect event sources such as repository webhooks only after the read-and-draft workflows are dependable.
- Write access last: add one approved action at a time, with explicit logs and a way to revoke credentials quickly.
The result is a no-code experience at the instruction level, supported by deliberate configuration underneath. Treat OpenClaw as an agent that proposes and performs bounded work—not as a guarantee that every natural-language request is safe to execute automatically.
