How to Build Sheltered Beds for Sanctuary in Fallout 4

To complete Sanctuary’s early settlement objective in Fallout 4, use the Sanctuary Workshop, open Furniture > Beds, and place five beds beneath a roof. Beds placed outdoors may not count, so use an existing house or build a covered shelter.

Build five beds under a roof

1. Go to the Workshop in Sanctuary and activate Workshop mode.
2. Open Furniture, then Beds, and select a bed you can build.
3. Place five beds inside a roofed building in the settlement. An existing house works; you can also build a separate covered shelter. The walkthroughs recommend indoor placement for the quest, even though one reports that the game may not enforce the condition consistently. Shacknews and Gamer Guides describe the sheltered-bed requirement.

Any bed type should work for the objective, according to the Shacknews walkthrough.

How many beds and materials do you need?

The initial objective calls for five beds. If additional settlers have arrived, the settlement may need more to meet its current requirement. Gamepressure’s November 10, 2015 guide reports a cost of 4 steel and 5 cloth per bed. Treat that as a guide-reported cost: the Workshop’s displayed requirements for the bed you select are the ones to follow in your game.

For the settlement beyond this quest step, a community-authored Steam settlement guide gives the general rule of one bed per settler. It also says settlers who lack beds automatically claim newly placed ones.

If the objective does not advance

• Confirm that all five beds were placed within Sanctuary’s build area.
• Check that each bed is beneath a roof rather than outdoors; covered placement is the dependable approach described by the quest walkthroughs.
• Check whether more settlers have arrived and increased the settlement’s current bed need.

The cited walkthroughs do not establish a definitive troubleshooting procedure beyond these checks.
