You choose three companions to join the Hero, so the most dependable setup is one that covers physical damage, healing or spell support, and utility. Keep those roles covered, then adjust vocations and battle choices to suit your preferred pace and the enemies you face.
Start with roles, not a supposedly perfect lineup
Nintendo’s official DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake announcement says you can create a party by choosing three companions and selecting their vocations, appearances, and voices. It names Warrior, Thief, Mage, and Martial Artist as examples, and the remake adds Monster Wrangler.

For a straightforward story run, build around three jobs: dependable damage, healing or spell support, and utility. These are roles to cover, not a fixed list of vocations: the game does not designate an objectively optimal combination, and your preferences can shape how you fill each role.
- Damage: Include a character whose main contribution is attacking foes.
- Healing or spell support: Make room for a character who can keep the party going or provide useful spells.
- Utility: Give the remaining slot a purpose that complements your other choices, such as additional flexibility in combat.
Choose companions and vocations by the role you want them to play, rather than assuming every party needs the same exact lineup.

Choose a party plan that fits how you play
| Plan | How to approach it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Simple story run | Favor reliable damage, healing or spell support, and utility. Keep the roles clear and easy to use. | Less emphasis on long-term vocation planning. |
| Build-focused run | Consider vocation changes as a way to shift a character’s role over the adventure. Decide what abilities or roles you want before changing course. | Secondary guides recommend different progressions, so no single route is established as best. |
| Higher-difficulty run | Plan for dependable role coverage and adjust your approach to the challenge you have chosen. | Some walkthrough advice is specifically framed around Dragon or Draconian difficulty and should not be treated as a universal requirement. |
These are decision frameworks, not rankings. The official game information explains party creation and combat options but does not prescribe a best team. Guides from GameFAQs, Game8, and RPG Site offer recommendations, but they differ; treat their vocation paths and final lineups as preferences rather than rules.
Use vocation changes to reshape roles, not to follow a mandatory route
A vocation progression is useful if you enjoy planning how a character develops or want to change the party’s balance over time. It is not a prerequisite for building a functional team. Before changing a vocation, decide which role or abilities you want that character to provide, then check whether the new direction still leaves the party with damage, healing or spell support, and utility.

Because secondary guides suggest different progressions, the evidence does not establish one universally superior route. Choose changes for the abilities and party roles you value, and avoid changing a character simply because a guide labels a particular path “best.”
Adapt your tactics to the fight
Party composition is only one part of preparation. Nintendo says battles let players change tactics, weapons, abilities, and spells to meet different foes. Use those options as the situation calls for them: a party built for a general story run can still respond to specific encounters by changing its equipment or combat choices.
