Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

FFmpeg can pad the sides black or place a designed background behind the video. Stretching fills the frame but makes people and objects look unnaturally wide; cropping fills it by cutting off part of the portrait image.
Choose how to use the landscape canvas
A portrait source and a landscape output are separate choices: keep the source portrait, compose it onto a 16:9 frame, then encode that frame for YouTube Live. Decide first whether the whole portrait image must remain visible.
| Layout | What viewers see | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fit with black padding | The complete portrait image centered in the landscape frame, with black space at the sides. | Simple and preserves the full image, but leaves empty side areas. |
| Fit over a designed or blurred background | The complete portrait image centered over artwork, color panels, or an enlarged blurred copy of the footage. | Uses the canvas more fully, but takes more filtergraph work than black padding. |
| Crop to fill | A landscape-width image cropped from the portrait source. | Fills the frame but removes content from the top and bottom; use only if that crop is acceptable. |
| Stretch | The portrait image expanded to fill the landscape frame. | Changes proportions and visibly distorts the image. |
For most phone footage where all of the action matters, fit the image and design the side areas rather than stretching or cropping it.
Build a simple landscape output with FFmpeg
Fit the portrait video and add black sides
Use FFmpeg’s scale and pad filters to fit the input within 1920×1080 while preserving its aspect ratio. In a filter option or filtergraph, the core operation is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1
The scale filter reduces the portrait image until it fits inside the landscape dimensions. The pad filter adds the remaining space around it, centering the image. With no background color specified, padding is black. setsar=1 sets square pixels for the output composition.
This is a filter segment, not a complete, universal streaming command. The input filename, audio handling, encoder settings, and YouTube ingest address must match your file, FFmpeg build, and stream setup. If the video has audio, ensure your command maps it as well as the filtered video.

Use an enlarged, blurred copy as the background
To fill the sides without cropping the foreground, make two branches from the video: scale one to cover the whole canvas and crop it to 1920×1080, then blur it; scale the other to fit inside the canvas and overlay it in the center. This illustrative filtergraph shows the composition:
[0:v]split=2[bgsrc][fgsrc];
[bgsrc]scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=increase,crop=1920:1080,boxblur=20:10[bg];
[fgsrc]scale=608:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease[fg];
[bg][fg]overlay=(W-w)/2:(H-h)/2,setsar=1[outv]
The foreground width of 608 pixels is an example of a centered portrait region on a 1920×1080 canvas; adapt dimensions to your source and desired composition. In a complete command using this graph, map the resulting video label, for example -map "[outv]", and explicitly map input audio if present. The graph is an illustrative recipe, not a tested command for every input or FFmpeg installation. Filter availability and accepted options vary by build; consult the FFmpeg filter documentation if a filter or option is rejected.

Keep the composition readable
- Check that the important action remains visible in the portrait foreground after scaling.
- If adding text or artwork to the side panels, keep it away from the foreground and test the layout at the final output size.
- Use black padding when simplicity and low filtergraph complexity matter more than filling the sides.
Set up YouTube Live ingest
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Obtain the stream URL and stream key from the encoder setup, then use them in your FFmpeg command. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, paste it into a public command example, or share it with others. Follow YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance for the current interface and channel requirements.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations list RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain a stream. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can reliably maintain and verify the current channel settings before broadcasting.

YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 live video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio according to its current encoder guidance. Codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate should be selected together; the figures above apply specifically to H.264 at 1080p30. YouTube also says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream and check its health
- Before making the broadcast public, start a test with a representative section of the video, including movement and any audio.
- Check the preview in Live Control Room for the intended landscape frame, centered portrait image, side treatment, and correct audio.
- Watch stream health while the encoder runs. If the preview stutters or stream health reports a problem, check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate and whether the encoder is sending the configured format.
- Use YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings as a reference for compatible video files and encoding choices.
One landscape output versus a separate vertical stream
The FFmpeg layout above sends one composed 16:9 output. YouTube documents a separate workflow for simultaneous horizontal and vertical viewing: Live Control Room offers vertical layout choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. For third-party dual streaming, YouTube’s setup directions call for RTMP(S) and a separate vertical stream key; send the correct format to each key. A single landscape FFmpeg composition does not create a separately composed vertical feed.
