Buy a VPS for the workload you actually run, not for a headline CPU count. For a game server, site, API or control panel, balance shared or dedicated CPU, memory, SSD/NVMe capacity, transfer, latency and a stable public IP. Then reserve the address, create the correct DNS records and harden the operating system before exposing it to players or the public internet.

What a VPS is and what you are paying for
A virtual private server is a virtual machine rented from a cloud provider. The provider runs the physical host and virtualization layer; you administer the operating system, applications, firewall, users and data inside your virtual machine. Amazon Lightsail describes an instance as a virtual private server in the AWS Cloud. Its bundles combine vCPUs, RAM, SSD storage and data transfer, and include static IPv4 and DNS-management features. DigitalOcean calls its VPS products Droplets and offers configurations with shared or dedicated CPU, RAM, disk storage and network bandwidth.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That division of responsibility matters for a gaming project. You do not buy a finished game host with a control panel, automatic mod management or guaranteed tick rate unless a plan explicitly provides those services. You buy allocated compute and network resources and must install and maintain the software that runs your server, website, launcher, API, map repository, voice service or community tools.
Define the workload before choosing a plan
Dedicated game server
A game server usually needs consistent CPU scheduling, enough memory for the operating system and server process, fast storage for maps and logs, and a network path with acceptable latency to players. A shared-CPU VPS can be economical for a lightly populated or bursty server. Sustained simulation, large worlds, many entities, frequent saves or several instances on one machine are better candidates for dedicated or CPU-optimized capacity. Provider labels differ, so check whether a product means shared virtual cores, dedicated virtual cores or a guaranteed share of a physical core.

A small site often spends more time waiting for requests than consuming CPU. Memory still has to hold the operating system, web server, runtime, database and cache, with room for traffic spikes. A VPS that is comfortable for a static site may be cramped once you add a database, image processing, a game-server map viewer and scheduled backups.
API, launcher and backend services
Launchers, authentication APIs, leaderboards and telemetry create a mix of short CPU bursts, database activity and outbound transfer. Measure the combined load rather than sizing each process in isolation. Leave capacity for deployment jobs and migrations so an update does not starve the live service.

Video streaming and other large-file workloads are transfer-heavy. DigitalOcean lists video streaming among VPS use cases, but the practical question is whether the plan’s included transfer, port speed and overage policy fit your audience. A plan with generous CPU but little transfer can be a poor choice for trailers, patches or downloadable assets.
Build, CI/CD or batch jobs
Compiling, video encoding and batch processing can keep CPUs busy for long periods. Shared CPU is designed for economical, light or bursty work; dedicated or CPU-optimized plans are more appropriate when throughput and predictable scheduling matter. Schedule jobs away from peak player traffic or run them on a separate VPS.

How to read VPS specifications
| Specification | What it controls | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| vCPU | Parallel compute capacity and, indirectly, how quickly code can run | Determine whether cores are shared or dedicated. Sustained simulation, encoding, CI/CD and high-traffic front ends generally benefit from dedicated or optimized CPU. |
| RAM | Operating system, application processes, database pages, caches and temporary buffers | Count every service and leave headroom for traffic spikes, updates and file operations. Memory-optimized families target in-memory caches, analytics and high-performance databases. |
| SSD/NVMe storage | Operating-system files, game data, databases, logs, uploads, snapshots and temporary files | Confirm medium and capacity. NVMe is generally positioned for higher I/O, but the provider’s documented limits and workload matter more than the label. Reserve space for logs, updates and growth. |
| Transfer and network | Player traffic, web requests, downloads, backups and replication | Compare included transfer, port limits, IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, overage pricing and the region’s latency to your players. |
| Public IP | The address that DNS and clients use to reach the server | Prefer a reserved or static address. If an instance replacement changes an ephemeral address, every A or AAAA record pointing at it must be updated. |
| Backups and snapshots | Recovery from deletion, corruption, failed updates or a compromised host | Check frequency, retention, restore fees and whether snapshots are stored separately from the running disk. A snapshot is not a substitute for an application-aware database backup. |
CPU: shared versus dedicated
Shared CPU plans put your virtual cores on physical resources shared with other customers. They reduce entry cost and can perform well for light or bursty services, but performance can vary as neighbors use the host. Dedicated or CPU-optimized plans reserve more predictable physical capacity and suit sustained workloads such as game simulation, video encoding, CI/CD and batch processing. Do not infer performance from the number of vCPUs alone: generation, clock behavior, virtualization policy and single-thread performance also affect a game server.
RAM: budget for the whole machine
RAM is a ceiling, not a performance score. The operating system, web server, runtime, database, cache, monitoring agent, control panel and game process all consume it. When memory is exhausted, Linux may reclaim caches, invoke swap or terminate processes. Swap can prevent an immediate crash but is much slower than RAM and should not be treated as extra memory for real-time simulation. Ubuntu’s documented minimum for cloud images is 1 GB of RAM; Canonical presents that as a system floor, not a production recommendation. Extra software increases storage needs as well.
Storage: capacity and I/O are separate decisions
Estimate the installed operating system, game binaries, mods, world saves, database files, uploaded media, logs and at least one local working copy of a backup. Growth is often driven by logs and player-generated files rather than the initial installation. Check whether the provider uses SSD or NVMe, whether storage can be expanded without rebuilding the instance, and how snapshots affect billing. A storage-optimized family can be preferable for data-heavy workloads even when its CPU-to-RAM ratio is less attractive.
Transfer, IPv4 and IPv6
Included transfer is usually a monthly quota. Count both directions according to the provider’s definition, and include patch downloads, map downloads, backups and monitoring traffic. Public IPv4 may be bundled, charged separately or subject to regional availability; IPv6 can reduce address pressure but does not replace IPv4 when players or third-party services are IPv4-only. Confirm the current quota and price at checkout because provider pricing, IPv4 charges and allowances change.

Concrete plan examples and volatile pricing
One published AWS pricing example lists a Linux Lightsail bundle at $5 per month with 0.5 GB of memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB of SSD storage and 1 TB of transfer. AWS lists that figure in 2026; it is a provider price and quota, not a performance guarantee, and prices or regional terms can change. Half a gigabyte is a very small memory budget once you add a database or game server, so treat this bundle as an entry-level starting point for a minimal service rather than a universal recommendation.
| Provider example | Resource model | Notable tooling | Price information available here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Lightsail | Predictable bundled vCPU, RAM, SSD and transfer plans | Static IPv4 and DNS management are included in the Lightsail service model | $5/month Linux example: 0.5 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer, as listed by AWS in 2026; verify at purchase |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Shared-CPU and dedicated-CPU families with workload-specific configurations | One-click Linux application images and a broad range of Droplet families | No current official regional price was published; check current regional pricing |
Compare providers on more than the advertised monthly number: CPU sharing, RAM-to-CPU ratio, SSD or NVMe behavior, included transfer, IPv4 cost, IPv6 support, region latency, snapshot and backup policy, monitoring, support and the ease of moving to a larger plan. Predictable bundles can simplify a small deployment; workload-specific families provide more control when a game server, database or build system has a clear bottleneck.

Choose a region and a stable address
Select the region with the shortest practical network path to most players and to dependent services such as authentication or databases. A nearby region usually reduces latency, but a region with no available dedicated-CPU capacity or inadequate transfer may be a worse choice. Check whether moving regions requires a new instance and address.
Reserve a static public IPv4 address when the provider supports it, and attach it to the instance before publishing DNS. An ephemeral address can change when you stop, replace or rebuild a virtual machine. If you will serve over IPv6, assign the provider’s documented IPv6 address and plan an AAAA record as well. Keep a written record of which address belongs to which environment so a staging server is never accidentally published as production.

DNS records you need after buying the VPS
A DNS zone is the set of routing records for a domain and its subdomains. You can host the authoritative zone with your registrar or with the VPS provider. If you use the provider’s DNS service, create the zone there and replace the registrar’s nameservers with the nameservers the provider gives you. If the registrar remains authoritative, add the records in its DNS editor instead.

| Record | Typical name | Target | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | @ or the apex, such as example.com |
Static public IPv4 address | Maps the domain or a subdomain to an IPv4 web or game endpoint. AWS defines an A record as mapping a domain or subdomain to a web server’s IP address. |
| AAAA | @ or a subdomain |
Assigned IPv6 address | Publishes the IPv6 route when the service is configured and reachable over IPv6. |
| CNAME | www, play or another alias |
A canonical hostname such as the apex or a provider hostname | Creates an alias instead of duplicating an address. Follow your DNS provider’s rules for apex records; a conventional CNAME is normally used on a subdomain, not at the zone apex. |
| MX | Usually the apex | Mail-provider hostnames with priorities | Routes email. Add MX records only when a mail service is configured; they do not point mail to a web server by default. |
| TXT | Apex or a service-specific name | Verification or authentication text | Used for domain ownership checks and email policies such as SPF, DKIM or DMARC when required by the relevant service. |
Lightsail documentation states that its DNS records default to a 60-second TTL. A short TTL can make planned address changes visible sooner, but recursive resolvers may still retain cached data according to their own behavior. Nameserver changes can take longer to appear because resolvers cache the delegation and old zone data.
Point your domain to the VPS: exact sequence
- Register or select the domain. Use an existing domain or register a new one. Decide which hostname will be canonical, such as
example.comorwww.example.com, before configuring redirects and certificates. - Create the DNS zone. In the provider console, choose its DNS or networking area, create a zone for the domain and note the authoritative nameservers. If you are keeping DNS at the registrar, skip the zone creation and use the registrar’s editor.
- Reserve and attach the address. Allocate a static IPv4 address and attach it to the VPS. Add an IPv6 address if you will serve IPv6, and verify that the operating system firewall permits it.
- Add the apex A record. Enter the apex or
@as the name, the VPS IPv4 address as the value and the provider’s recommended TTL. Do not enter a URL such ashttps://example.com; DNS values are hostnames or IP addresses. - Add AAAA when applicable. Enter the IPv6 address in an AAAA record only after the service listens on IPv6 and the firewall allows the required ports. Publishing an unreachable AAAA record can make some clients fail even when IPv4 works.
- Add aliases. Create a CNAME for
wwwor another subdomain pointing to the canonical hostname. For a game endpoint, use the hostname your client or launcher expects. A DNS name does not automatically change a nonstandard game port; players may still need a port in the client unless your software provides SRV support. - Add mail and verification records separately. Add MX records only for the mail provider you actually use. Add TXT records for ownership verification and email authentication exactly as that service specifies. Never replace an existing TXT record blindly; several TXT values can coexist at one name.
- Change nameservers if the provider hosts the zone. At the registrar, replace the old authoritative nameservers with the provider’s pair or set. Leave the old zone intact until the new delegation is visible, then remove obsolete records after confirming the cutover.
- Wait for caches and test. Query the domain from more than one network or resolver. Check the A and AAAA answers, then request the hostname over HTTP and HTTPS. A successful DNS answer does not prove that the web server, game process or firewall is configured correctly.
Secure and configure the new VPS
The first login is a provisioning task, not the finished server. The following example assumes an Ubuntu or Debian image; use the equivalent commands and service names for another operating system.
- Connect with an SSH key. Use the provider’s initial administrator account and key-based authentication. Confirm the host fingerprint through the provider’s console or trusted provisioning record before accepting it.
- Update the operating system. On Debian-family systems, run
sudo apt updatefollowed bysudo apt upgrade. Reboot if the kernel or a critical library requires it, then reconnect and confirm the machine is healthy. - Create a non-root administrator. Run
sudo adduser adminuser, add the account to the sudo group withsudo usermod -aG sudo adminuser, and install the same authorized SSH key for that account. Test a second SSH session before disabling root login. - Harden SSH. After key login works, disable password authentication and direct root login in the SSH daemon configuration, validate the syntax and reload the service. Keep an existing session open while testing so a typo does not lock you out. If your provider offers a browser console, verify that it is available for recovery.
- Allow only required ports. Enable a host firewall such as UFW with SSH, HTTP and HTTPS only when those services are needed. A typical sequence is
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH,sudo ufw allow 80/tcp,sudo ufw allow 443/tcpandsudo ufw enable. Add the game server’s documented UDP or TCP port explicitly; do not open every port. - Enable security updates and time synchronization. Automatic security updates reduce the window for known vulnerabilities. Correct time is important for TLS, logs, authentication tokens and scheduled jobs, so verify the image’s time-synchronization service is active.
- Install only the required stack. Add the web server, runtime, database, game-server binary, reverse proxy and TLS tooling your application needs. Remove sample sites and default credentials. Run each service under its own least-privilege user where the software supports it.
- Back up before real traffic. Configure provider snapshots or backups and test a restore. Export databases in an application-consistent format, copy important game worlds or configuration off the VPS, and define how far back you need to recover.
- Monitor and alert. Watch CPU utilization, memory pressure, disk fullness, I/O latency, transfer, process restarts and certificate expiry. Set alerts before the disk reaches capacity or a game process repeatedly crashes. Monitoring data should go somewhere you can access when the VPS is unavailable.
- Install and validate TLS. Obtain a certificate for every public hostname, redirect HTTP to HTTPS for web traffic and renew it automatically. Test the certificate after DNS points to the final address and ensure the web server presents the expected hostname rather than a default virtual host.
Verify DNS, networking and the application
DNS answers the wrong address
Query A and AAAA records from multiple resolvers. Confirm that the static address is attached to the intended instance, that there is no older record at the registrar, and that the authoritative nameservers match the zone you edited. Remove an obsolete AAAA record if IPv6 is not configured; otherwise some clients may prefer a broken IPv6 path.

The hostname resolves but the site times out
Check the provider’s network firewall and the operating system firewall, then verify that the service is listening on the expected interface and port. A process bound only to 127.0.0.1 is reachable locally but not from the internet. Review service logs and confirm that the reverse proxy forwards to the correct local port.
Players cannot connect to the game server
Confirm the client is using the correct protocol and port, the server process is listening, and the provider allows that port. Test from outside the VPS network rather than from localhost. Check whether the game requires a query port, a separate voice port or a specific public address. DNS changes do not open ports or configure the game process.
HTTPS shows a certificate warning
Make sure the certificate includes the exact hostname players or visitors enter, that DNS points to this VPS, and that the web server selects the correct virtual host. Renewals can fail when port 80 or 443 is blocked, when a proxy points elsewhere or when the certificate’s DNS challenge record is missing.
When to resize, split or migrate
Resize when monitoring shows a repeatable bottleneck: memory pressure and swapping call for more RAM; sustained CPU saturation calls for more or faster dedicated CPU; full disks call for expansion or storage separation; transfer exhaustion calls for a plan with a larger allowance or a different delivery design. Do not solve every problem by adding vCPUs. A database may need memory and I/O, while a game simulation may need stronger single-thread performance.
Split services when one workload can starve another. Putting a database, build runner or backup compressor on the same VPS as a real-time game server creates noisy-neighbor behavior inside your own machine. A second small VPS can be cheaper and safer than repeatedly over-sizing the primary one. Document environment variables, firewall rules, DNS records and restore steps so a replacement instance is routine rather than an emergency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuying checklist
- Write down the services, peak player or visitor load, storage growth and transfer pattern.
- Choose shared CPU for light or bursty work; choose dedicated or optimized CPU for sustained simulation, encoding, CI/CD or batch jobs.
- Size RAM for the operating system, applications, database, cache and spikes, not just the headline process.
- Confirm SSD or NVMe type, capacity, expansion method and snapshot or backup retention.
- Compare transfer quotas, port limits, IPv4 charges, IPv6 behavior and regional latency.
- Reserve a stable public IPv4 address and record any IPv6 address you publish.
- Decide where authoritative DNS will live and prepare A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT records only as needed.
- Plan SSH keys, a non-root administrator, firewall rules, automatic updates, time synchronization, backups, monitoring and TLS before inviting users.
- Test DNS and the application from outside the VPS, including the actual game client or launcher.
- Recheck prices, quotas, IPv4 fees and availability at checkout because these terms change.
Final decision
The right VPS is the smallest configuration that gives your workload predictable CPU, enough memory for every service, fast and expandable storage, adequate transfer and a region players can reach with acceptable latency. Buy a static address, map the domain with the correct DNS record types, secure the machine before opening ports and use monitoring to decide when to resize. That process is more reliable than choosing a plan by vCPU count or monthly price alone.
