Buy a digital game through Nintendo eShop on your console or Nintendo.com while signed in to the Nintendo Account that should own it. Before paying, verify the destination console, the game’s download size, and available storage. Nintendo’s U.S. policy treats digital payments as final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one.
This guide explains the purchase steps, payment options by country, storage limits, virtual game-card sharing, download problems, pre-order cancellation, and the regional limits on Nintendo’s refund policy.

What you need before buying
A digital purchase is tied to the Nintendo Account used at checkout, not to the person holding the console or to a different account in the household. Decide which account should retain the game before opening the store.

- A destination console: Nintendo.com asks you to choose where the game should download. The selected console must be linked appropriately to the purchasing account.
- Internet access: The console needs an active connection to download the game. It can download while awake or in sleep mode if the connection remains active.

Two checks that prevent most mistakes
First, verify the account icon and account name immediately before selecting the final purchase button. Family members can use the same console while owning separate accounts, and a purchase made on the wrong profile cannot simply be moved later. Second, check the store region. Nintendo.com’s digital service is listed for Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States, but prices, taxes, payment instruments and consumer rights are not identical in every market.

Buy on the Nintendo Switch console
Buying directly on the console is the simplest route when the system is already connected and you want to confirm the installation location yourself.
- From the HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop.
- Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the game. Do not continue under a child, guest, or family member’s account if another account is meant to retain the purchase.
- Find the game and open its product page.
- Review the platform shown, the description, age rating and the listed download requirements. Confirm that the title is for your console model and that your available storage is sufficient.
- Select the purchase option and review the account, price, payment source and any tax shown before confirming.
- Complete checkout with account funds or an available payment method.
Purchases made in eShop remain associated with the account selected in step two. If the download does not begin immediately, leave the console connected to the internet and check its download activity rather than purchasing the title again.

Nintendo.com is useful when you are away from the console or want to send a game to a particular system. It has an extra eligibility requirement: the buying account must already have accessed eShop on a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.
- Sign in to Nintendo.com with the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
- Open the game’s product page and verify the edition, platform and required download space.
- Choose the option to buy digitally.
- Select the destination console presented during checkout. This determines where Nintendo sends the download.
- Review the account, price, region, payment method and destination console.
- Confirm payment.
Released games begin downloading after the purchase is completed. The destination console must have sufficient memory and an internet connection, and it must be powered on or left in sleep mode with an active connection for the transfer to finish. If the selected system is offline, the purchase is still associated with the account, but the download cannot complete until that console reconnects.
Payment methods and country limits
Nintendo’s digital purchase service is listed for Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States. Storefront rules, taxes, payment instruments and consumer protections can differ among those markets, so use the Nintendo Store for your country rather than assuming that an option shown elsewhere will work.
| Payment method | Availability stated by Nintendo | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Account balance | Listed as a purchase method in the supported Americas storefronts | Confirm that the balance is held in the same regional account used for checkout. |
| Nintendo eShop Cards | Listed as a purchase method; exact availability is regional | Use a card intended for the account’s country or region. |
| Visa or Mastercard | Listed for the United States and Canada, including eligible debit or gift cards | The card must correspond to the country accepted by that storefront. |
| Discover | Listed for the United States and Canada | Check whether your local storefront supports it before relying on the card. |
| PayPal | Listed for the United States, Canada and Mexico | The PayPal account and Nintendo Store region must be compatible. |
A card issued for another country can be rejected even when its network is otherwise supported. If payment fails, verify the account’s country, billing details and card region before trying a different method. Prepaid eShop Cards can help you control spending, but only when the card is valid for the account’s regional store. Do not change regions casually to use a different price or payment option; confirm the consequences for your account and balance with Nintendo first.

Understand downloads and pre-orders
Released games
For a game that is already available, Nintendo says the download starts after purchase. The system may queue it behind another download or pause it if there is not enough space. Keep the console connected until the transfer and installation finish. If you archive software to make room, the license remains with the purchasing account and the title can be downloaded again later.
Pre-orders
Nintendo says a pre-order is charged no sooner than seven days before release. After payment, the console preloads a non-playable version; a small release-day update is required before you can start the game. A preload therefore uses storage before launch, so check free space well before release day rather than waiting for the final update.
Nintendo.com pre-orders can be canceled before payment is processed and before the preload occurs, up to seven days before the release date. That is a specific pre-order cancellation window, not a general right to reverse any completed digital purchase. Once payment and preloading have occurred, the ordinary final-sale policy applies unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law provides another remedy. If you are considering cancellation, act before the seven-day point and before processing rather than deleting the preloaded files.
Check storage before you pay
Switch-family consoles reserve part of their internal memory for system use, so the headline capacity is not the amount available for games.
Recommended Free Tools
| Console storage specification | Official capacity | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | 32 GB internal storage | Some internal space is reserved for system use. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | 32 GB internal storage | Some internal space is reserved; Nintendo’s FAQ also describes microSDXC expansion. |
| Nintendo Switch OLED model | 64 GB internal storage | Some internal space is reserved for system use. |
| microSDXC expansion | Up to 2 TB supported | The card is sold separately; this is Nintendo’s compatibility ceiling, not a recommendation for a particular capacity or speed. |
Compare the game size with free space
- Open the game’s product page and note the required download size.
- On the console, open the HOME Menu and go to System Settings, then the Data Management area.
- Compare the available space with the listed requirement, leaving room for updates and other content you expect to keep.
- If space is tight, archive or delete an installed title before buying, or install a compatible microSDXC card.
The product-page figure is the useful number for the purchase decision, while the console’s available-space figure reflects system use and content already installed. Leave a margin for updates instead of filling the card to its last few megabytes. Nintendo’s specifications establish compatibility, not a promise that every game will fit alongside every future update.
Removing software does not forfeit a purchase. Nintendo says purchased or redeemed titles appear among your virtual game cards and can be downloaded again at no additional cost, provided you sign in with the purchasing account. Save data management is separate from the game file, so review the console’s Data Management options carefully before deleting anything you still need.
Choosing a microSDXC card
A microSDXC card is optional; the official information establishes the supported format and a maximum capacity of 2 TB, but it does not identify a best size or speed for every player. Match the capacity to the number and size of games you expect to keep installed, confirm that the card is genuine and compatible with Nintendo Switch, and retain proof of purchase if the seller provides a warranty. A larger card is useful only if your library will actually exceed the console’s internal free space.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Capacity, compatibility, seller reputation and warranty are the sensible comparison points. Nintendo’s specification does not rank brands or require a particular speed, so avoid presenting one card as universally best. If you buy through a marketplace, check that the listing identifies a genuine microSDXC product and that returns are available for a faulty or counterfeit card.
Ownership, accounts and two-console sharing
Nintendo’s current support description uses virtual game cards rather than relying only on older “primary” and “non-primary” terminology. The account that bought a digital title controls it, and Nintendo says the purchase cannot be transferred to a different Nintendo Account.
Two consoles can load the virtual game cards
One Nintendo Account can have virtual game cards loaded on up to two consoles. Once a virtual game card is loaded on a console, any user on that console can play that title, subject to the normal account and system requirements. This is the practical way to share a purchased game among profiles on those designated systems; it is not a transfer of ownership to each user.
What happens on another console
On a console outside the two that load the account’s virtual game cards, the purchasing account can access its games under Nintendo’s stated conditions, including an internet connection. Other users on that console cannot play those purchases. This distinction matters in households with several systems: decide which two consoles should receive the virtual cards instead of assuming that every profile will have offline access everywhere.
Prevent the most common account mistake
- Check the account name and icon immediately before confirming payment.
- Do not buy on a temporary profile and expect to move the license later.
- For a family, write down which account owns each game and which two consoles are designated to load its virtual cards.
- Use Nintendo’s current virtual-game-card instructions when changing consoles, rather than guides that describe an older system.
Refunds and cancellation rules
Nintendo of America’s digital-products policy states: Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That statement is specifically Nintendo’s U.S. policy. Nintendo’s purchase FAQ likewise describes digital sales as final while identifying the pre-order cancellation window before payment and preload, up to seven days before release. The policy does not promise a trial period for a game downloaded by mistake, bought on the wrong account or found to be unsuitable.
Consumer-protection law can provide rights beyond a store policy. If you live outside the United States, read the refund terms for your Nintendo Store region and check the law that applies to your transaction. A regional policy may differ from the U.S. wording, and statutory rights can apply even when a store’s standard terms say sales are final. When contacting support, provide the Nintendo Account, order information and a precise explanation; do not create a second purchase while waiting for an answer.

Troubleshoot a purchase or download
The game does not appear after payment
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Nintendo Account that completed the purchase.
- Check the console’s download activity and verify that the console is online.
- Open the Data Management area and check available space.
- If the title was archived or removed, locate it among the account’s virtual game cards and start the download again.
- If the purchase still does not appear, preserve the order details and contact Nintendo Support rather than buying the game a second time.
The download stops or will not start
- Test the internet connection and leave the console awake or in sleep mode with an active connection.
- Free enough space for the listed download and any required installation data.
- Check whether another download is occupying the connection or queue.
- Restart the console and resume the queued download.
A Nintendo.com purchase can also be waiting for the destination console to reconnect. Verify that you selected the intended system during checkout; buying again for a different console can create a second, separate transaction.
Payment is declined
Check that the payment method is offered in your country, that the card or PayPal account matches the storefront region, and that the billing information is current. Account balance or a region-compatible Nintendo eShop Card can be an alternative where those methods are supported.
You bought on the wrong account
Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred to a different account. Stop additional downloads, identify the account that made the purchase, and contact Nintendo Support promptly if you believe the transaction was unauthorized or resulted from an account error. Do not assume that deleting the software or removing a user will move ownership.
A practical buying checklist
Use this sequence whenever you buy a digital Switch game:
- Account: Verify the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
- Region: Confirm that the account and payment method belong to the same Nintendo Store region.
- Platform: Check whether the product is for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 or another specified edition.
- Storage: Compare the product page’s download requirement with free space in Data Management.
- Destination: For Nintendo.com, select the correct console before paying.
- Payment: Review the funding source, total and account shown on the confirmation screen.
- Download: Keep the selected console connected until installation completes.
- Receipt: Retain the order confirmation, especially for a pre-order or a purchase that may need support.
Bottom line for digital buyers
The safest purchase is made from the intended Nintendo Account after checking the destination console, regional payment support and available storage. Internal space is limited and partly reserved, but compatible microSDXC storage can expand a Switch-family system up to Nintendo’s stated 2 TB ceiling. Treat completed digital payments as final unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or your local law says otherwise; the clearly stated cancellation route is a Nintendo.com pre-order canceled before processing and preload, up to seven days before release.

Nintendo says a Nintendo.com pre-order can be canceled before payment is processed and before preload, up to seven days before the release date. This is not a general cancellation right for completed digital purchases.
What should I do if my download does not start?

The Bottom Line
Choose the right Nintendo Account first, verify the destination console and storage, and check regional payment rules before confirming. Nintendo supports microSDXC expansion up to 2 TB, while completed digital payments are generally final; the key stated exception is a qualifying pre-order canceled before processing and preload.
