The reliable way to check is to compare your computer with Rockstar Games’ published requirements for the edition of Grand Theft Auto V you plan to install. In Windows, open DirectX Diagnostic Tool by pressing Start, choosing Run, entering dxdiag, and selecting OK. Record the operating system, processor, installed memory, graphics-card model, graphics memory and storage type, then compare every item with the matching Enhanced or Legacy requirements tier.
Meeting every minimum requirement only means your hardware reaches Rockstar’s published threshold. It does not promise a particular resolution, frame rate or level of smoothness. You also need an internet connection and a Rockstar Games network login for activation and online play.

What you are actually checking
“GTA Online” is the online mode associated with Grand Theft Auto V, but the PC requirements depend on whether you install the Enhanced or Legacy edition. There is no single universal minimum specification for both editions. Start by deciding which edition your launcher offers or which edition your account owns, then use only that edition’s table.

The minimum row is a screening test. The recommended row is the closer match to Rockstar’s higher target, not a guaranteed performance profile. The check has six separate parts:
- Windows version and, for Enhanced, the required Windows build or edition.
- Processor model.
- Installed system memory (RAM), including whether it is dual-channel where specified.
- Exact graphics processor model and its dedicated video-memory capacity.
- Storage capacity and drive type.
- Online access, account login and periodic entitlement verification.
A broad label such as “NVIDIA graphics” or “AMD processor” is not enough. The model number and memory capacity determine whether your component is comparable to the listed part.
Choose Enhanced or Legacy before comparing parts
Enhanced
Enhanced is the more demanding edition in Rockstar’s current table. Its minimum line requires an SSD and a 4GB graphics card; its recommended line raises memory, graphics memory and storage requirements and specifies a DirectStorage-compatible drive. If your computer has an older processor, an integrated GPU or only a hard disk, check this edition especially carefully.
Legacy
Legacy has a lower published hardware threshold and lists a hard disk in both tiers. That does not make every older computer suitable: the processor, graphics model, operating-system version and available disk space must still meet the corresponding row.
If you are unsure which edition you will install, compare your computer with both tables. A PC can pass Legacy while failing Enhanced because the editions have different operating-system, graphics, memory and storage requirements.
Find your exact Windows, CPU, RAM and GPU details with dxdiag
DirectX Diagnostic Tool is Rockstar’s documented way to collect the information needed for a requirements comparison. It reports the names Windows and DirectX expose to the game, rather than a generic product family.
- Click Start, select Run, type
dxdiag, and press OK. - If Windows asks whether it should check WHQL digital signatures, choose Yes, following Rockstar’s compatibility instructions.
- Stay on the System tab. Write down the operating system, processor name and installed memory.
- Open the Display tab. Record the graphics-device name, chip information, approximate video memory and driver version/date. A computer with more than one display adapter may show more than one Display tab; inspect the adapter used for games as well as any integrated adapter.
- Check File Explorer separately for free space and whether the destination is an SSD or HDD. The storage device is not identified as completely by dxdiag as the CPU and GPU are.
- Compare each recorded value with the row for the same edition and tier in the table below. Save a screenshot or text export of dxdiag if you are asking support for help.
Rockstar’s instructions were updated April 28, 2024. Onboard graphics can report shared system memory rather than dedicated video memory, so do not treat a large “approx. total memory” number as equivalent to a discrete card with that amount of VRAM.

The names in the table are comparison points, not a statement that every unlisted processor or graphics card will behave identically. A component that is newer is not automatically faster in every workload, and a card with the same amount of VRAM can still have a different architecture or driver situation.
How to compare your dxdiag results
Operating system
Read the exact Windows edition, architecture and build shown on the System tab. For Enhanced minimum, the published requirement includes Windows 10 build 1909 or newer. Enhanced recommended names Windows 11. Legacy requires 64-bit Windows 10 in both tiers. A PC that has suitable hardware but an ineligible operating-system version still fails that row until Windows is updated or replaced.
Processor
Compare the complete model string, including its generation or suffix, with the CPU in the chosen row. Do not compare only the number of cores, clock speed or the words “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5”; those families contain models with widely different performance. If the model is not listed, the table alone cannot certify equivalence. Treat it as an unresolved comparison and look up the exact chip’s relative capability before relying on the result.
System memory
Use the installed-memory figure, not the amount currently free. Enhanced’s recommended tier additionally specifies dual-channel operation, which concerns how the memory modules are installed and configured. If Windows reports less usable memory than is physically installed, investigate hardware reservations or a 32-bit operating system before concluding that the requirement is met.
Graphics processor and VRAM
Use the exact adapter model from the Display tab. For example, “GTX” alone does not tell you whether the card is comparable to the GTX 1630 or GTX 660 listed in different rows. Check the adapter’s dedicated video-memory capacity, not only shared or total graphics memory. Laptop systems often include both an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU; make sure the game is configured to use the adapter that actually meets the requirement.

Storage
Check both free capacity and drive type. Enhanced minimum specifically calls for an SSD, while Enhanced recommended specifies a DirectStorage-compatible drive. Legacy’s table lists an HDD. The game still needs the listed free space after accounting for the operating system, launcher, updates and other files. An SSD upgrade cannot compensate for an underpowered CPU or GPU, and Rockstar does not identify a particular SSD model or interface, so confirm that a proposed drive fits and is supported by your computer.
Classify the result without overpromising
Use this decision process after recording your specifications:
- Pick the edition. If you are installing Enhanced, ignore Legacy’s lower threshold; if you are installing Legacy, compare with Legacy’s rows.
- Check every minimum category. Operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU model and VRAM, and storage must all meet the same row. One weak category is enough to make the comparison a “does not meet published minimum” result.
- Check the recommended row separately. Passing minimum does not mean you are near recommended. Mark each category as minimum-level, recommended-level or below minimum.
- Record uncertainties. An unrecognized GPU, shared-memory report, unknown drive type or unlisted CPU is not proof of compatibility. Resolve that item before buying the game or hardware.
- Confirm online prerequisites. Hardware compatibility does not provide an internet connection, Rockstar Games network login or entitlement verification.

Online requirements beyond the hardware table
Rockstar states that an internet connection and Rockstar Games network login are required for activation and online play. The publisher also notes periodic entitlement verification. Plan for those checks even if the installed files are already on the computer. A PC that passes every hardware line can still be unable to enter GTA Online if it cannot reach the required services or the account cannot authenticate.
The requirements page also warns: “Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game.” Treat the December 10, 2025 table as the current published reference, not a permanent guarantee for every future update.

Integrated or onboard graphics
Integrated graphics borrow system memory, so dxdiag may display shared memory that looks larger than a discrete card’s dedicated VRAM. Rockstar warns that some integrated graphics and mobile chipsets may be incompatible. If the Display tab shows only an onboard adapter, verify the exact chip model and do not count shared memory as dedicated video memory.
Laptops with two adapters
A laptop can list an integrated adapter and a discrete adapter. Compare the discrete model if one exists, then set the game’s Windows graphics preference or the vendor control panel to use it. Running on the integrated adapter can cause a PC that is capable on paper to behave as though it is below the graphics requirement.

Multiple Windows drives
A computer may have an SSD for Windows and an HDD for games, or the reverse. Check the actual installation destination and its free space. For Enhanced, placing the game on an HDD does not satisfy the published minimum merely because another drive in the computer is an SSD.
Desktop upgrades with mismatched parts
Before purchasing a graphics card or SSD, confirm the motherboard slot or drive interface, power-supply capacity, physical clearance, cooling and operating-system support. Rockstar’s table establishes what the game asks for; it does not establish that a particular upgrade fits your case or works with your motherboard.
What to do when the PC falls short
Below the storage requirement
Free space first by removing unused files or installing to a suitable drive. If Enhanced is your target and the computer lacks an SSD, an SSD is a relevant upgrade only after you confirm the machine accepts it and the CPU, RAM and GPU also meet the selected row.
Below the memory requirement
Check whether the motherboard has an available slot and supports the intended capacity and memory type. For the Enhanced recommended target, verify that modules can operate in dual-channel configuration. Adding RAM will not correct a graphics or processor shortfall.
Below the graphics requirement
Identify the exact adapter and dedicated VRAM first. A graphics upgrade may require a larger power supply, additional case space or a newer connector. If the computer uses only incompatible integrated graphics, replacing the entire platform may be more practical than adding memory that the integrated adapter merely shares.

CPU replacement can be limited by the motherboard socket and firmware, while a Windows upgrade can be blocked by hardware support or licensing. Compare the complete platform against the table before spending money; upgrading one part does not convert a system that still fails another category.
Troubleshoot an unexpected “can’t run” result
- Check the edition again: Enhanced and Legacy have different rows and storage rules.
- Reopen dxdiag: confirm that you read the active Display tab and the exact model, not a generic adapter label.
- Verify dedicated VRAM: distinguish dedicated, shared and total graphics memory.
- Check Windows architecture and build: a 32-bit installation or an older build may fail even with adequate hardware.
- Check the destination drive: verify both capacity and whether it is an SSD or HDD.
- Update graphics drivers: dxdiag shows the driver version/date, which helps identify an outdated installation, although a driver update cannot make below-spec hardware meet a requirement.
- Test the network and account: confirm the internet connection and Rockstar Games login separately from hardware checks.
- Recheck after changes: rerun dxdiag and repeat the comparison after installing memory, a GPU, a drive or a Windows update.
What this check can—and cannot—tell you
This method answers a narrow but important question: whether your PC reaches Rockstar’s currently published specification for a chosen edition. It is not an independent benchmark and cannot predict an exact frame rate, graphics preset, loading time or behavior after future downloadable content. Performance can also vary with resolution, in-game settings, background applications, thermal limits, driver versions and the number of players or effects in a scene.
Use the minimum row as a go/no-go screen, the recommended row as a stronger target, and the exact dxdiag model names as the evidence behind your decision. Keep a record of the edition, Windows build, component models, VRAM, RAM configuration and installation drive so you can repeat the check when Rockstar changes the requirements.
