Prepare a “Holding” scene in your encoder before anything goes wrong. When the service feed needs to come off air, switch to that scene without stopping the encoder output or starting a new broadcast. In OBS, the scene changes the picture sent through the existing YouTube connection; exact controls differ in other encoders, so check the version your church uses.
Build the holding screen before the service
Choose a simple visual
Create a scene named “Holding” or “Technical difficulties.” Add a background image or media source, then place a short, readable message over it: “We’ll be right back” or “Please stay with us while we restore the service.” Keep the text large and uncluttered so it can be read on a phone.
If you know what happened and can give a reliable return estimate, you may include it. Avoid promising a time the team cannot verify. YouTube does not prescribe wording, artwork dimensions, or a holding-screen duration; choose a layout that suits your stream.
Check sources and audio
Preview the scene in your encoder. Confirm the background and text are visible, and that the scene does not reveal a camera, desktop, or unrelated content. Check what audio sources remain active: a holding image may still transmit microphone, computer, or media audio unless your scene or mixer is set up to prevent it. OBS is one encoder option; YouTube supports encoder software and hardware more broadly (YouTube’s encoder setup guide).

Connect the encoder to the church broadcast

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the church’s broadcast.

Copy the broadcast’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a private connection credential; do not display or share it publicly.

Start the encoder and wait for its output to appear in Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Keep the control room available and confirm the preview and status before relying on the stream.
First-time live streaming must be enabled for the channel and may take up to 24 hours. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility well before a service, not during an interruption (YouTube live-streaming eligibility).

Switch to the holding screen during an interruption

In OBS or your encoder, select the prepared Holding scene. In the OBS scene workflow, this changes the outgoing picture within the current encoder output rather than requiring a new broadcast.

When possible, verify the holding image on the public watch page or ask another team member to check it. The encoder preview confirms what the encoder is sending, while the public page confirms what viewers can see.

When service is ready to resume, check the camera, presentation, and audio sources, then switch back to the Service scene.
Scene controls and transition behavior vary by encoder and configuration. Confirm the workflow in your installed version before relying on it; YouTube’s instructions establish the encoder connection, while the church-specific scene guidance describes the one-output scene-switching approach.

Pick a holding format that fits the problem

Keep the broadcast and its archive in perspective
A holding scene is a way to replace the outgoing picture while the encoder remains connected; it does not guarantee that every encoder configuration or network problem will preserve continuity. If the encoder disconnects, check its connection and the Live Control Room status before deciding whether to restart the broadcast.
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. That rule does not establish that an indefinitely running stream will be archived as one uninterrupted video longer than 12 hours. If the church needs recordings of a long-running broadcast, plan separately for how it will capture or divide the service.
Troubleshoot common holding-screen problems

The holding screen is not visible in the Live Control Room preview: Confirm the encoder is connected to the intended broadcast and that you selected the correct scene. Check that its image or media source is available and visible in the scene.

Viewers still hear room or computer audio: Inspect the active audio sources and mixer in the encoder. Mute or remove any source that should not accompany the holding visual, then verify the result in the preview.

The public page does not show the same output as the encoder preview: Check the broadcast status and public watch page, and allow for the stream’s delivery delay. Do not assume a scene change reached viewers until it is visible there, if you can check.

The stream will not start: Confirm the stream URL and key belong to the selected broadcast, check the channel’s live-stream eligibility, and look for a restriction. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.

The countdown is wrong after a delay: Replace it with a general holding message or update it manually. A looping file will repeat on its own schedule, not the church’s actual recovery schedule.
