For a route with significant elevation changes—or one where boats are awkward—use a minecart on rails. The best choice depends on the route and the mechanics available in your Minecraft edition and version.
Choose a transport method for your route

Move a villager in a boat
- Place a boat near the villager.
- Push the villager into the boat, or steer the boat into the villager to get them aboard.
- Move the boat along the route to the destination. Boats can travel on level ground, but cannot climb upward by themselves, so plan around steep changes in elevation.
- Break the boat when you want the villager to leave it. The Minecraft Wiki village tutorial says the villager remains in the boat until it is broken.
These boat instructions come from a community-maintained tutorial, rather than a version-specific official guide. If the interaction behaves differently in your game, check the mechanics for your edition and version.
Use a minecart for a prepared rail route
Build or use a rail track that reaches the destination, get the villager into a minecart, and move the cart along the track. This can suit a route with substantial elevation changes if you can prepare a rail path, but it takes more setup than a simple level boat trip. The cited minecart guidance is explicitly framed around legacy village mechanics, so do not assume it covers every current-version detail.
Guide a villager with a job-site block
A village tutorial describes placing a job-site block for a villager to travel toward, then moving the block onward to guide the villager. This is indirect: it relies on the villager being able to path to the block. Consider the villager’s profession and destination setup; the tutorial says trading locks in a villager’s profession.

Can you leash a boat carrying a villager?
Mojang’s April 15, 2025 announcement described leash-to-boat mechanics for testing in Java Snapshot 25w16a and said the feature was coming to Bedrock Preview and Beta. Sophie Austin’s Minecraft.net article, “Unleash your imagination,” stated: “Now you’ll be able to leash multiple mobs together.” These announcements establish the feature’s testing status at publication, not its availability in every current stable release or edition. No. Curing is an alternative way to obtain a villager, not a way to capture an ordinary villager. The Minecraft Wiki village tutorial describes detaining a zombie villager, protecting it from sunlight, then using a splash potion of Weakness and a golden apple to cure it.
