The command sets the selected player’s game mode; in Bedrock Edition, you can configure the block to run from redstone power or automatically. The setup steps below are for Bedrock, while Java’s command-block availability depends on its version and server settings.
Choose the command and who it affects
The command format is /gamemode <gameMode> [player]. Replace <gameMode> with the mode and use the optional player argument to choose a target. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference documents this form.
/gamemode creative @pswitches the nearest player to Creative./gamemode survival @pswitches the nearest player to Survival.- Use a player name to target one specific player. Selectors can target groups; for example,
@a[tag=sometag]selects all players with that tag.
The documented mode names include survival (also s or 0), creative (also c or 1), and adventure (also a or 2). The command reference also lists default (or d) for the world’s default mode. See the official popular commands guide for documented command forms and examples.
Set up a command block in Bedrock Edition
- Enable cheats. Open the world’s settings and enable Activate Cheats. In Bedrock, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you turn cheats off later; Microsoft explains this in its commands guide.
- Get a command block. Open chat and run
/give @p command_block. - Place and configure it. Place the block, open its interface, and enter a command such as
/gamemode creative @p. The official Bedrock command-block tutorial covers obtaining and configuring command blocks. - Choose when it runs. For a button-triggered switch, use an Impulse block, select Needs Redstone, and connect a button. An Impulse block runs when it receives redstone power.
- Activate it. Press the button or provide the redstone power required by the block’s settings.
Understand the activation settings
Bedrock command blocks have three types, each suited to a different job:

- Impulse: runs when it receives redstone power; useful for a one-time mode change.
- Repeating: runs once each game tick while powered.
- Chain: runs when a command block pointing into it is activated.
Needs Redstone means the block requires power; Always Active means it does not. Avoid leaving a gamemode command in an always-active repeating block unless you intend it to keep executing: it will run every game tick while active.

The setup menu instructions above are for Bedrock and should not be assumed to match Java. Minecraft’s commands guide says Java single-player worlds can enable Allow Commands during world creation or later through World Options. In multiplayer, you need sufficient permission to run commands; the owner of a server or Realm generally has the necessary permissions.
Java’s command-block enablement also varies by release. The Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes say the enable-command-block server property was removed in favor of the commandBlocksEnabled game rule. Check the instructions for your specific Java version and server configuration rather than following Bedrock menu labels.
